The president of the Chicago Teachers Union claimed during a radio interview that aired Sunday that conservatives don’t want black children to learn how to read.
Stacy Davis Gates made an appearance on WBBM 780 AM to defend the union’s contract demands. Gates claimed that conservatives who expressed criticism of the demands “don’t even want black children to be able to read."
“Remember, these same conservatives are the conservatives who probably would have been championing black codes, you know, during reconstruction or thereafter,” she said. “So, forgive me again if conservatives pushing back on educating immigrant children, black children, children who live in poverty, doesn’t make my anxiety go up. That’s what they’re supposed to say. That is literally a part of the oath that they take to be right wing.”
Um, "black codes" were created by the Southern democrats who had just lost the Civil War where Republicans had freed their slaves. Jim Crow laws? Drafted by democrats. Keeping and enforcing segregation? Dems. Founders of the klan? Democrats again.
And just in case Stacy missed the Chicago news the past few years while living in South Bend - democrat mayor, democrat Cook County Board president, democrat chief judge, democrat states attorney, forty-seven of fifty dem aldercreatures. There's even a democrat super majority in Springfield meaning they don't even need a Republican defector to pass their entire agenda and get it signed by....a democrat governor.
So the fact that black children can't read (or do math) wouldn't have anything at all to do with conservatives, and hasn't for decades now. It's far more likely that democrats don't want black kids knowing how to read lest they find out that democrats have been oppressing them since before the Civil War and lying ever since. In that, they're doing a bang-up job.

It doesn't take a genius to know equity grading that's utilized by a majority of CPS high schools is th real problem. A grading system that give students no lower than a 40% or 50% on each exam, quiz, or assignment. Then all the students need is 10%-20% correct to pass with a 'D' on the class.
Not only is equity grading the issue, but, so is the CPS policy of not factoring in absences and tardies into students' grades. You have students A's, B's, and C's with 40-50+ unexcused absences.
Let's not forget the mounds of extra credit given to CPS students to help get their exam, quiz, and assignment scores up too!!!

Austin College and Career High School (171 total student enrollment) had 40 Migrant students this past school that spoke Spanish and little to no English. They passed all of their classes without a Spanish speaking teachers or aides and Austin didn't even have a Spanish teacher. The students were able to pass with teachers pointing a lot, using Google translate, and speaking Spanglish to them.

My kids went to mt. Greenwood elementary for a few years. They came home with lice and not knowing math and reading comprehension. We switched to catholic grammer school and hired tutor for 2 years to play catch up from Mt. Greenwood. Now all 4 kids scored great on ACT tests and attending u of I., marquette, and purdue. Thanks catholic schools for saving us.

The City of Chicago spends through the school system more money per student then any school district in the country, close to $27000 per student. Too bad most of that goes for the patronage system of administration. Too bad it is impossible to get rid of teachers who do not do the job. I could go on. Any why isn't anyone in the school system concerned that black children are graduating with diplomas and can't even read the words on that document? If StD Gates would take her selective moral outrage and turn it into genuine concern for these kids' lack of education, maybe things would change a little. When I was in school, not too long ago, you got left back if you couldn't read or do that level math. At least attended summer school. When was the last time a CPS student got left back? If you were a problematic student, you were expelled from school, so the rest of the class would not be distracted.

Do schools actually teach kids to read. I sort of remember getting a library card at four, checking out some Dr. Seuss books and mom helping me. Yes we practiced at school, but the learning started at home. I was the oldest of seven and helped the next six read.

No one is banning books.
No school library can afford every book ever published.
So choices have to be made.
Some school libraries choose not to stock porn.
It is sad that this is a controversial take.
If as a parent it is important to you that your kids have accesses to graphic depictions of homosexual intercourse, you can buy it for them.
I'm sure that Stacy is more upset that conservatives have been pushing for school choice, so that black, brown, red, yellow and white kids all have the option of going to schools that expect them to be able to read, write and speak standard English and be able to do basic math. The "woke" schools - those with Dem admins and strong union teachers - lower standards across the board in the name of "equity", dumbing down everyone and making mediocrity the standard. A few of us evil conservatives work daily as tutors to undo the miseducation imposed on the majority of publicly educated kids.

If you are a blue shirt, you are paying your fair share, but you are on your own for legal representation. It seems you are being penny wise, pound foolish, but you do you. Biting your nose to spite your face also comes to mind.

They can opt all the way out. Several officers have. Personally, I think these officers should have negotiate their own wages and benefits. they also should not have any bidding rights for furlough, watches, or OT. But unfortunately that is not the case.
They also don’t teach cursive writing so kids can’t read the constitution.
