Dana Starks - RIP
Word trickling in that Dana Starks passed overnight.
Love him, hate him, whatever, we met him maybe twice during our career.
We do know he played politics (as all higher up bosses do), but he also righted a few wrongs when he knew someone was wrongly screwed over (which is more than a lot of other bosses did).

Met him once when he backed me up on a call in 015. My partner and I were shocked, he said to us, "It's your stop do what you do". R.I.P.
Dana certainly rode the wave, going from Commander to 1st Dep (over promotion for sure) but he was fair guy that always cared and looked out for the working police. RIP
He showed up on one of my jobs once, out of uniform, barking orders. Refused to identify himself. A real piece of work.
Starks was a good guy, RIP.
Changed my furlo when i was coming off probation for my honeymoon. Would kick assholes out of station on the regular
it neber ceases to amaze me when a cpd boss dies they are enshrined and put on a holy plateau but when a working non clouted officer dies nobody could care less on the cpd the clouted political hacks always win
He ruined OEMC with all his church people he hired.
RIP.
I wonder now if I can understand what he is talking about now?
That was Cortez Trotter.
Hope somebody remembers you when it’s your time.
Dana tried multiple times to pull me back. He was always polite and professional. Also, previous interactions while working beaches were positive. R.I.P.
Dana was a good man. 🙏
No sympathy from me …. Good Riddance! Just another boss who went along with the program at the expense of us common folk.
So well said … it’s like if you don’t have a phone call your just a pos. Good riddance !!! If they really cared they would go against the norm and back up the working police every single time.
I remember him being racially divisive years ago out in 005 at our very segregated roll calls. He went out of his way to help a black officer but only black officers. He had a nephew that sold drugs at a spot around 116th and Sangamon that was always tipped off by unknown sources and when search warrants were done at that location they were always fruitless. When he left 005 he brought handfuls of black officers to various inside positions that they stayed at until they retired which was usually 15-20 years working inside. Yeah he was something alright. Miss him already.
He was my first watch commander in 011. Worked for him when he was the commander and he took care of everyone. Made it a point to remember everyone’s name, even the new guys, at the Christmas parties. Killed beefs on the streets and on paper. I had more respect for him than Phat Phil.
I went thru the academy with Starks, always a friendly man and as he went up always offered a friendly hand shake and "if you need something call me " RIP
He had his good side and the normal chicago pd merit bad side. He took care of people for the most part but couldn't get FBI clearance as the 1st deputy. Caught on too many wire taps with some bad dudes. I would say the worst thing he did was getting his sister in law Sharon Price merit promoted to sgt. She is hands down one of the most worthless pieces of shit who never should have been coddled through the academy. Failed everything but was still allowed to become a cop. Gotta love blue cities.
“Always keep your shoes shiny”. Rip
He was a good dude. Fair to everyone & worked the streets like a true crime fighter!
Oh yes.. Sergeant in 011. Scared and useless.
Aside from wrongly labeling 664 of CPD as the rogue police, he was surely a swell guy, just like the time I had his future bro in law pulled over at 47 Cicero for soliciting a prostitute and buddy in the car with an ounce of weed and he calls to talk to me after bro sneaks call, only to his detriment when I accept the offer to talk and respectfully refuse the acting Supe’s demands, politely hanging up on him and impounding his bro in laws car.
That does not sound like Dana Starks. Not at all. Have known him since he came otj in '77-'78. We were not drinking buddies, but we were friendly, respectful, coworkers. I never once saw him act out like described or heard of him acting as such. Are you sure you have the right guy?
Thanks Dana Starks, you’ve helped a lot of people to get in some great spot.
No one else wanted to support us!!!!!
Get ur rest and FUCK this place
Bunch of goofy ass haters but know that you were a great Boss and a Good Man with a big heart.
Luv you forever
Your CPD Daughter
Not so. He was one of a very few who stood up for p/o's on up. There are plenty of assholes I could name who fit the description you wrote, but Dana Starks is not one of them. Did he play the game to survive? Sure, but he did his best to look out for others, which he did quite often. He was not a "fuck'em, what do I care" kind of white shirt, of which CPD had and has plenty. RIP Dana Starks. Glad to have known you.
You are absolutely correct. Dana Starks was okay. I have as much respect for Dana Starks as I have disdain for Phat Phil and I would not piss on Phat Phil if he was on fire. RIP Dana Starks.
Funny because he never worked in 005
I have a favorite memory of Starks standing up to that moron Maria Maher during a meeting. Her ideas were stupid and dangerous, and other exempt present knew it, but clammed up. Starks diplomatically got his point across to crazy. RIP.
Not a bad guy. Sorry to hear that he passed.
He did what the reverends told him to do.
That was Carruthers
As First Deputy, he was always cordial and approachable when I saw him at HQ. Rest In Heaven, Sir.
Maybe not assigned to 005 but I worked plenty of gatley field football details with him. Always fair and reasonable which is all you can ask for
He sure did work in 005. For a couple years he was the detail Sgt, at Gately Stadium. Unlikely others, he treated people detailed there fairly unlikely others who usually took care of certain groups.
I think you’re both thinking of Corky Calhoun. He was a drunken asshole 015 Lt. who’d always be in 011 both on and off duty on bullshit. As for Dana? He wouldnt go out of his way to hurt you but he only went out of his way to help you if you were black. Comment at 12:23:26 says it all.
Don’t they all?
Well he remembered this officer when I was very close to dying in the early 2000’s. I was a just a patrol officer but he sent flowers and a hand written card for my best wishes. I never met the man and what ever wrongs he committed he made them up as far as I’m concerned. RIP
Within a few weeks of becoming interim Superintendent,he made sure that I got the Department Commendation that I had been awarded 4 years before..When he shook my hand at the ceremony,he leaned in and said: "I remember all the good work you did in 011..It wasn't right what they tried to do to you"..Some other boss had a hard-on for me,and the DC had been sat on for 4 years..I had forgotten about the DC..He didn't forget about it..
I was in 011 when Starks was Commander. A group of people/folks from Rockwell gardens came in accusing all white P.O.s at the desk area of brutality. Starks came out his office looked at the officers accused then noticed no one was locked up or had any bruises etc. He then called them on their bullshit and kicked them out of the station. He didn't know me at all but stood up for me and my coworkers. R.I.P Dana Starks.
starks not the best boss and certainly not the worse always fair n respectful and better than phat phil and the rest of a-hole irish bosses
Dana was the police, as an LT. in 11, he would go on in progress calls to back up officers. RIP Dana
that does not sound like him he was always respectful n cordial are you sure you are not referring to that a-hole joe curtain
Dana Starks worked in 005 as a sergeant in 1994 when rotating ended. He was my sergeant on the watch. He was okay. The real racist hater was a piece of shit known as Danny K. Briggs.
And we all know the FBI is the highest example of fidelity, bravery and integrity. It was terrible they did not give him a stamp of approval. /s. Yeah, right. Get the fuck out of here! It is a fucking corrupt organization. But you are right about the idiot-in-law.
It was Ernie Brown that could not get a security clearance, not Dana Starks.
Didn't he do the swiping order on his last day out?
Yeah, because Dana Starks and Joe Curtain looked so much alike they could be twins! /s. WTF!
Dana defended me against a true hag of an alderperson during my career.
R.I.P. sir!
100% correct
Phil wasn't "irish", nor were many of his picks for bosses. Having an "irish" name or "irish" sounding name doesn't make them irish, when most of them couldn't find ireland on a map or where in ireland their ancestors came from. Drinking beer, despite the marketing for St. Pat's day, does not make one "irish."
I didn't know him personally, but May he rest in peace.
Dana Starks was a good man and a good Boss. Simple as that.
why the hell do you people always have to throw hate on anyone who wears a white shirt. Just because they moved up, doesn't mean they're automatically an asshole. They did, you didn't, or haven't yet; get over it already. Some are assholes, yes, many are not. if you got a beef with someone man/woman up and handle it. They're all just human beings, have a conversation with them and let them explain or inform. Hiding behind a keyboard, or muttering under your breath until you find another dingbat who agrees with you is childish. I know a bunch of bosses that were good, knowledgeable and willing to talk with you that I do asshole bosses. Just because they don't agree with you, or let you do whatever you want/don't want to do doesn't mean their a jagoff.
And 08:35:15, this is not an endorsement of Phil either. SOS scandal happened on his watch. Bosses knew what was going on then, but didn't know when $&it hit the fan.
Sergeants at the district level are the ones who really drop the ball on putting in coppers on the watch for various awards. Units guys end the year with 100 honorable and a few dcs.
Not that the Irish part matters, but Phil was Irish, his father was CFD, and he fucked over his buddy Irish Mauer. He promised Jimmy he'd be first deputy if he made supt, and once appointed to supt, Phil chose Dana. Not that it was a bad choice for the troops, but Phil stood at the podium saying he always knew he'd pick Dana one day if he ever made supt. Jimmy was pissed beyond words and confronted back stabbing Phil. Jimmy made Phil give him that new title with five stars or whatever the hell it was, just to get an increase in salary.
Phil chooses friends and colleagues by who kisses his ass most or who he can use to do the most for him. Phil is for Phil. Always has been .
So says the anonymous person hiding behind his or her other its own keyboard... Start with your yourself and put your name here hypocrite. Signed, Anonymous
12:48 You hit it on the head with Phil All he wanted was yes men and women. The fat guy who never got the ball when he was young. Promoted himself at others expense by backstabbing them. He surrounded himself with good looking women and promoted them with no experience to good units mostly into the detective division. Bullshit sells and he was full of it.
The worst superintendent in my 33 yrs on the job was JFed. The next was Phil Cline…..
