Sgt Test Results Fixed
According to the FOP's Friday update, the old promotional list is dead and the new one is finalized. Results will be arriving in the mail next week with a sergeants' promotional class in February.
It turns out the only thing slower than California vote "counting" is Chicago "grading" a scantron test.

Being promoted in this silly little dept is akin to standing on the shoulders of other men and calling yourself tall.
Remember children, no matter where you think you deserve to be on that list, you’re wrong. There will be tons of merit spots that jumped you before you even signed up for the test.
Those of you who get promoted and deserve it, just wait till your in class and you realize you recognize the moron sitting next to you is the same moron who couldn’t spell their own name right in the academy will be the same useless rank as you. And they tried a quarter of how hard you tried.
The best part is all the burnt out, cynical cry babies you were on the watch with who get promoted will now love the job and act like a true company man.

Of course all the bosses had to make sure their wives, gf’s, side pieces, boy toys and frat brothers were on the first before it was released to the rest of us. Once that was fixed by the “subject matter experts” then wouldn’t ya know it the results are in! 🤦
At this point it’s possible they hand changed every single answer with no accountability. Old timers always had this department pegged, just takes a while to realize it’s all above board kid. Larry snelling the gym instructor is now a boss? Earned not given.
Legally speaking, the current list is still active until they actually promote people off the upcoming list. Anything can happen to halt the process in this huge city and department. Merit process needs to be completed. Same happened with the current list. The list was scored, ranked, and merits were done and placed in whatever tier they fell into. They still hired 100 people off the old list and they were already 700 deep. I’m not saying that will happen for sure but legally speaking the current list isn’t dead yet, but definitely a lame duck.
Place on list depends on how much cash or sex favors you might be willing to dole out. Like everything in Chicago not what you know but ho you blow or payoff.
EVERY promotional test on this job is compromised to some extent. Some more than others. Some egregiously blatant. All common knowledge and ignored/accepted by BIA as part and parcel of the corrupt CPD Culture.
To think otherwise is foolhardy. If you haven’t learned this with even a few minutes on the job you’re beyond stupid.
Grading is one thing. Cooking the numbers is another.
If one doesn't test well but has a great body and an ugly face are they eligible to be promoted via the merit system? Asking for a friend...

I took the test one time and before the list was posted I was called downtown to a deputy mayor's office it seem that my test was damaged and ripped, this moron asked me to give him the answer that I gave without looking at the exam again I refused. He was dumbfounded that I wouldn't give him the answers never did make sergeant and landed at the bottom of the list, no lie

I don’t mind it and my quality of life improved ten fold since promoting. No more driving around in an old beat up beat car. Approving reports/not writing them. Freedom to do and go as I please without asking anyone permission. 5-6 hour most days, oh and the new schedule is great, 4 on 3 off ;)

I am a third generation south side Irish Chicago police officer. When it comes to "promotional exams". They have never been legitimate. All of the exams are created by the bosses who are deemed "subject matter experts". So a handful of insiders have designed the exam along with the exam company. They then create special study groups for those that are connected. Do others who study hard succeed? Yeah. Along the way though the crooked get promoted as well.
The corruption does not end there. 30% of each sergeant class is based on "merit". However the CPD does not define what "merit" is.
Once you make the rank of sergeant then if you are connected to the right people then you will move up very quickly.
This is just the first layer of how corrupt this police department is. This is what they do explicitly. Imagine all of the implicit corruption going on?

For all those getting promoted off the new list: you can clearly see all the deadbeats, all the ambitious, self-centered people, all the whiners and complainers, all the people who collect a paycheck and don't do any work to earn it on CPD. Make up your mind, and be determined, not to be one of those people. Do whatever you can, even in a little way, to make the job better.

One of the first sgts I worked for pulled me and my partner on the side and told us the only time you call me is if you just got shot or you just shot someone. Otherwise make a decision and don't bother me.

Not legit since since 2002? I was hired in the late 70's. I can't recall any promotion test that was 100% legit There were secret test answers that only the chosen knew. (notify the watch commander) They played around with race norming and banding. Efficiencies used to be calculated into the test scores and guess who got high scores. Paper clipping your name to the answer sheets. Secret study groups, and the list goes on.
Dear Young Officer..........Would you take the Sgt promotion for One Million Dollars? How about Two Million? Because you can't make higher rank without becoming a Sgt first. And the difference in lifetime pay and pension benefits between a ranking officer and a police officer will be well over a million dollars. Many of you are not thinking long term. Some day you are going to be an old timer, looking back on your career, and you are going to wish you had done things differently. You will probably be on pension more years than you worked. The more you make now the bigger the pension for the rest of your life.

Actually the most legit promotional exam I took was the detective exam way back when, 1972. You took the exam, walked out the door to a test checking station where your exam was graded right in front of you. The checker gave you the results immediately. No further BS. You walked out the door and compared your scores with other test takers and got a good idea of how you did. Scores were posted quickly and the list posted in the lobby at 1121 S State. Promotion to the detective by the rank order off the list. Legit as could be so the powers to be and the political hacks couldn’t handle that so the detective exam was changed to written, then the oral (haha) and the merit and the fix. Just for kicks I finished tied @72 with about 10 others. 2nd class promoted off the list.
And that’s the way it should be, you are paid a lot of money to make a decision.

That Sergeant is a fucking idiot . They are not lords over officers. There are specific jobs that Sergeants are required to be at. If they are too arrogant or stupid to show up to do what they’re paid to do, they can take the stripes off. I’m saying this as a former FTO for years and a current detective. I have literally gone to scenes where the sergeant didn’t know how to do anything and took their insecurities out on the officers.
Today, the headline is how the last sergeants' test was fixed and seemingly used to illegitimately promote certain officers. When the scores are released in February, this blog will acknowledge those who earned their promotions fairly by score. We'll see, “Congrats to those who made it legit." However, if the test process was fixed, congratulating those with good scores endorses a flawed system and corrupt scoring practices. Without firsthand knowledge of the scoring process, it’s impossible to distinguish between those who succeeded legitimately and those who didn’t.
Earn it....make your bones and put in the work in 003 then!!! With an attitude like yours i bet you'd be a peach of a supervisor 🤣

You're absolutely right - however the new kids bother sergeants all the time for every little thing because mommy is not there to make the decision for them. Some are so stupid that they call the sergeant on their day off. Unreal!

Me. I don’t care about anything. I made sgt with 17 years on. I was worried about babysitting the new people but I did it. I made sgt 4 years ago, now I’m already on second watch by bid. Normal life, low drama, drive around, log each car 2 times and before I know it I’m at check off. It’s a fairly peaceful job on days. Roll call, chill in the Sgt office for a while getting my log set and having a nice cup of coffee. Hit the street an hour or so later and start logging cars. Help out on a few jobs and call it a day. The pension will be nice and I’m not humping a beat car anymore. Glad I studied and glad I got made by score.. people can hate, but I’m still self made. If you are unsure u want to study for it I recommend doing it.. the promotion is a life changer. Midnights for 1 year then 3rd watch for two years was tough but not bad.. again, a lot of freedom so it’s not bad.
Odd. I’m white, scored in the top 30, had the oral type test, didn’t have the answers and I don’t recall mentioning MLK or social justice stuff.. maybe you and I had a different test??? Or you just can’t stand that you bombed it and other people are getting made.. study harder next time

I’m hearing that they are contemplating on going 100% appointment, that way if the supervisors don’t do what they want they will demote you. Other departments are currently doing it. That’s why the department used certain verbiage in the contract when referring to promotions. If it happens, this will be a disaster because in essence it will be 100% the buddy system.

The largest pay increase is promotion from PO to Sgt. It's 25-30K per year. If you work as a Sgt for 20 years that's an extra 500-600K during your career. Then you retire for 20 Yeats and get an extra 18-20K per year in retirement which is 369-400K not including COLA at an additional 3% per year. You're easily at over 1 million dollars.

Might be a few left that remember this.....Kind of when the hanky panky started. College Prep, enlisted 1971, GI bIll, UIC 2 years, took entrance exam 1975. Results released not by grade but by categories, Well Qualified, Qualified, Conditionally Qualified. Thinking I pretty much aced the test, I'm shocked to find I'm in Conditionally Qualified. Asked questions, talked to alderman, city hall, etc, nobody knew a thing. By the grace of Jane Byrne most got hired 80, 81. Find out that, as was standard, the application asked if you had any family members, especially Police, who worked for the city (dad),. If you checked that box the Brick was laid on. Seems there was some concern by some "groups" that the city was hiring too many family members of employees, legit or not, and we were all put in the Conditional group. Did my 29 +, enjoying the life, end of story
Ditto to DixonSyder...took the following dick's test (the new academy on Jackson). After the test not only did you know your score, there was a P/O from the academy at the movable chalkboard making hash marks below various scores giving the test takers some idea of where their score was in relation to others. Doesn't get more "legit" than that. Hard to say legit in relation to the Dept.
There's a guy I worked with. Good guy. He was a sergeant, but I was a patrol man with him. MS. Anyway, his dad was on the job. Typical St. Patrick crap. They begged him to make Lieutenant. He wanted no part of it. Deputies kissed his ass.

Saying "congrats to those who made it legit" specifically excludes those who made it by any illegitimate means. It excludes those who scored high, but did so through cheating or manipulation of test results. That's kinda the whole point of saying "legit." It's not an endorsement or assertion that the highest scorers are legit. It's simply wishing congratulations to those who made it legit. This is all very simple to understand, but you made this stupid post anyway.

Getting paid $3,000 more than a detective is not worth it. People will say that they earn $10,000 annually because of differential pay, but that is not pensionable.
Easy, take the promotion, get assigned to 003 and work 1st watch. Do your best and earn that phone call to move somewhere else. Everyone cries about not having a phone call or getting to a bad spot. This job is easy, it may take longer than those with phone calls but it can be done without one. Plenty of people before you have earned their spots this way and will continue to. Hard work is rewarded in the long run.

most Important 90% of Merit are Male/Female black. I feel for the Blacks that studied, scored above 70% and are passed over by the political connected and some that have good oral skills.(just not on tests)
