Another Tool Going, Going....
The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA), the civilian panel responsible for overseeing the Chicago Police Department, is wrapping up a public comment period as it weighs major restrictions on the types of traffic stops CPD officers are allowed to make.
The group is taking public input through Monday but has already outlined a list of restrictions most of its members support. Among them: barring traffic stops for plates expired less than a year, improperly displayed or missing front license plates, improper rear license plate lighting, having a single non-functioning head-, tail-, or brake lights during daylight hours, and driving with a loud sound system.
A minority of CCPSA commissioners also support banning stops for failure to wear seat belts or failure to signal turns or lane changes. Some community members are pushing to go even further — calling for a ban on stops for tinted windows, among other minor violations.
Why? Because they believe traffic stops are disproportionately used against Black and Brown drivers, often as a pretext to look for guns or other contraband.
So the list of Rules and Laws that black and brown people don't have to follow - solely because they're black or brown - continues to expand.
No one on the CCPSA seems to be asking why black and brown people can't maintain their vehicles to be street legal after all that effort in Springfield writing and passing the Laws.
On the plus side, policing in Chicago just keeps getting that much easier.

The city puts these policies in place, handcuffing us further….and then invite the county police in to do all the things they don’t want us doing. Make it make sense
I only have a few years to go. I guess I’ll just close my eyes to Traffic violators to follow the policy. Nothing but bad bosses and bad policy.
Woefully should be added to our CPD patch and vehicles.
Because we can’t do our job that we are paid to do. Four people on my block told me they are moving within two years. One is packing now. None are city workers. The city leadership is destroying Chicago.

FACK IT!!! Policing gets much easier and easier. Why bother risking your butts for these ungrateful police department. 25 years ago, things were different, we had bosses but now there are STUPIDVISORS. Traffic stops produced 80% to 90% of illegal things people possessed and those traffic violations were a great tool. I remember once I had a 5 car accident, it involved a Lesbian, a white guy, a black guy, an Asian guy and a somewhat fresh from Mexico guy. Now, stereo types are so damn true because the accident proved it once again. Who had a TVDL? The Mexican guy, who had license and insurance, the Lesbian and white guy, who had a suspended license, the black guy and who cause the accident, the Asian guy. See this is nothing a civilian will comprehend; this is an example hoe how police do their job. I still get a kick out of it when I tell the story. For those young officers, just watch each other's back and don't be a hero but if you necessary don't hesitate to put someone to sleep. Believe me, I know from experience I never hesitated.

Don’t stop anyone for anything. Stop doing traffic stops. Fuck what the Chief of Patrol says, tell him to go out and make stops and do blue cards. If the city and Dept. go along with this silently, never make another stop again. Get your tickets at accident scenes and nowhere else. Traffic laws aren’t followed and scarcely enforced now, as it is, give them what they want. Keep a list of everything they can’t be stopped or ticketed for and follow along. Don’t register your car, fix lights etc. When in Rome do as the Romans.
If anyone does anything else than just handle their calls, render aid and complete a report they’re crazy. Do nothing, that’s what they want, give it to them and let them deal with the outcome.
Wow that is so true lol I haven’t signed out a mover book in over a decade. And forget about ANOV’S. It’s much easier to come to work when one doesn’t care. With just a shade over 20 years on its time to sit back and cruise to the finish line. Would rather get in trouble for doing nothing than being proactive and really getting fucked. Nobody in Chicago stops to think we are ahead of NYC as we already have a Marxist Mayor and some members of the City Council.

I thought we enforced state and local laws enacted by people elected by the people? Was this group elected by the people to decide which laws we can enforce?
We also take an oath to the US Constitution? Will this be a problem, or is that something they can decide for us too?

Are they planning on changing Illinois Vehicle Code or municipal ordinances. The city on one hand has invested a lot of money in technological upgrades for law enforcement. On the other hand there is this push to handcuff police. I blame it on that 4 letter word that started in 1995.

Aside from the politics and days off canceled in this place, this job truly gets easier and easier. Shame that it’s at the expense of a sane, law biding citizen, but hey this is what the city overwhelmingly wants.
This has been going on for decades. Back in the last half of the 1970's police in Illinois could impound your car if you did not have insurance on it. The law lasted two, maybe three years before people started screaming it was disproportionately impacting minority drivers. Going unsaid is that it jacked up rates for people who were not minorities.
Of course if we had a Republican governor, he would decertify the City as an actual police department in the state for picking and choosing what laws to follow.
I sit on the fence between being a proactive worker and being reactive. I see both sides to being a “young go-getter” because I legitimately became a Chicago police officer to help people in the city I grew up in and being a “Dog” and avoiding the public whenever possible. I didn’t take this job for the money, but if the city/state and courts would only back us up, it would make it worthwhile to actually work. I get more cynical as I enter my 15th year because being proactive isn’t worth losing my job and/or freedom. I’ve already had lawsuits and suspension days over ridiculous things that shouldn’t have gone that far had the Department only back its officers up. It’s sad how low we have come and I only see us going lower.

If they don't like these laws then gets the statues changed. No taillights, really any lighting violation, being listed is wild. Maintaining your vehicle is part of owning a vehicle.

Bro , don’t matter ,don’t worry about probable cause for street stops. Issue parking tickets for equipment,license violations. The young men and women driving motor vehicles will blow stop signs,drive through red lights,speed,drive around rr gates, fail to use turn signals, get rear ended,rear end each other cause no brake lights. Young men and women from the hood never disappoint . More guns,more accidental shootings,drive by shootings,gang members murdered .
