Rumors Abound
Every rumor starts with an element of truth in it and this is no exception:
word out of hq: that big promotional class of 37 lieutenants, plus sergeant retirements starting this month wiped out almost all of the 51 sergeants that got made in march. cpd hr formally requested a summer class of 50 sergeants, which has not yet been approved, in addition to a fall class of 50.
Recruit classes all summer are scheduled in advance with ILETSB. But city hall said fuck no and cancelled all recruit classes until September. not a single one until mid-september.
and last night, 12 PO's, 4 SGT's and a LT were dumped from the academy back to districts due to poor performance.
This is due to be yet another summer of above average retirements as the 1997 people are hitting their twenty-ninth year. Long time readers and veterans will recall the gigantic hiring wave of 1993-thru-1998 where something like five-thousand bodies went through the Academy. The Department is at the end of that run (mostly) and hiring since has never quite kept up with attrition.

And no more Lt promotional classes this year. Exhausted all of this year’s budget in this last class so the Sup can get in his full 30% picks.

There’s 250 recruits in the academy right now. Maybe no more until September but recruits are there already. Some are about a month in
Shee-it! They're replacing those dozen academy instructors with civilian instructors. Had nothing to do about "poor performance" and has everything to do about transforming policing. Y'all complain about 3-year wonders teaching classes? Well wait until you see the Chicago public school dropouts and COPA activists that will be teaching cont. ed classes at the new academy next year. Officer safety and tactics won't even make the Top 40 things that they will be teaching. What a ghetto department...
No new recruits in summer is guaranteed and official. Good news is if your waiting to get on mayor BJ will be done soon.
There’s a push to get certain people promoted before the Supe leaves. A certain female commander has been visiting the Supe’s office regularly hoping to get promoted.
This is exactly what has been going on though out the department!!! Officers retiring sooner and younger!!!
Retired 2 years and if I can lend any advice this is it.....if you can go early ,GO or at least consider leaving earlier than you anticipated. The quality of life after the job is incredible with both family and your well being. For those of you within 5 years of retiring, find a way add to the principal of your mortgage to be mortgage free when you retire your mortgage is the largest portion of your monthly expense...this is a game changer in retirement. No mortgage in retirement no necessity to work unless its out of boredom. When I left 2 years ago as you know I left some upcoming raises on the table and even after walking away from that and after taxes and insurance my pension payment as a blue shirt is $6,250ish. Today your monthly payment would be more and more going forward. So with no monthly mortgage payment and I'm not a frugal person...I have yet to be struggling and I haven't worked at all post retirement. So with this little bit of info try to start today to begin setting yourself up for an exit plan if not an earlier one. Oh and let's not use the excuse I have to stay longer to pay my kids college tuition. I believe in helping them out but only so much however when it comes down to it, its not your debt or your problem they will survive.
That is true, but let’s not forget. We had a government contract for training. They hired a lot of Retired cameras that actually had experience to train the in-service and recruits however, Larry had a girl a former commander black female who took the class signed up to work for them, then whispered in Larry’s ear to bring it all in house, getting rid of the government contract, which paid for all of them and then brought in all of the coppers with absolutely zero experience on the street to teach the classes or I should say try to teach the recruits and The Oldtimers. It is a disaster. All the money is gone. Stupid is as stupid does

Truth. I just came back from the 4-day classes at the new academy. They used to make fun of how some POs come to class? Wait until you see the civilian "instructors". LOL Same people we used to arrest 20 years ago are now teaching at the police academy. All I can say is bring an extra battery for your smartphone.
Now that spots are open, you can go there and show everyone how it’s done.
I'm willing to bet a paycheck that the Chicago Police dept is a main topic of discussion at rollcall around the country!

Left at 55 and 29 last year for full pension and medical.
A lot of the civilian instructors are retired PO s being hired back.

that's the rumor, no Sgt. promotions this summer, maybe at Christmas.
Lt. Promotions on hold until April 2027, then another big class because of command staff, captain retirements if Superintendent Snelling retires.
We can only hope Larry hangs around for his full four years as Superintendent. He's the Best CPD has had since Terry H. and Phil C.
Take a look at the racial makeup of the officers dumped from the academy. I think a few of the officers on the list should get together and file a lawsuit for racial discrimination.

I stayed until 63, larger pension and big deferred. Never had to work another day ,have plenty of money and my health 19 years later. Works out differently for everybody. You roll the dice. Have seen guys leave early and the end up working security jobs. All depends on how you planned your retirement

Yes leaving this rotten ass job was the best move. Retired at 50 I got plenty of things to keep me busy.
Without Shotspotter the room is useless! It can be ran by 1 PO per watch. The DSS can also cover the room. Put the Sgt back on the street

Academy was a good spot if you wanted S/S day off group. A lot of other so called spots weren't all that good if you worked shit hours and couldn’t duck. Academy rocked.

More than half of the Academy instructors are now civilian. It's been steady flow for a few years now. Plan is to make mostly civilians and they have been aligated to hire more. It's going be a scary dept in few years. A lot are retired police, but others from copa cps etc ...

My sources are telling me that everyone had better be prepared to go to a 12-hour tour. We have already been told to learn to do more with less. Less personnel. Less vehicles. Less OT. Also, violence interrupter's will be assigned to busy districts and sit in on roll calls. Mental illness cases will be sharply looked at.

Congratulations! May you collect many pension checks. I maxed out at 50 but stayed until 55 to get the insurance. Hated everything about the job for the last 10 years but it was worth it in my case.

That's a personal decision I hope it works out with the medical. I toughed it out and retired last year at 30+ at 55. It's true what they say "retirement doesn't suck" but in all honesty I have to get another job - bored as hell here. Have a lot of hobbies yes and that works and it's nice but still - I'm healthy and going stir crazy
