A Math Problem

We haven't seen the official count yet as we're enjoying the last few days of our 13B. Supposedly, Chicago suffered a grand total of 4 fewer murders than last year.
  • 2010 - 435
  • 2011 - 431

After a year touting "double digit" crime reductions all over the media, the only number that matters was less than a 1% reduction. All the units being disbanded, the shuffling of administrative positions and elimination of spots, even the counting of recruits coming off probation as "officers" was used to justify all sorts of political shenanigans, and pretty much demonstrated exactly how little control the police have over idiots determined to kill one another.

Here's a conundrum though - crime statistics are usually expressed in terms of ".... per 100,000 people." Chicago lost 200,000 residents in the last census. So is it safe to assume that Chicago's homicide rate has actually been climbing? We're going to guess that the media is told to play up the "drop in the number of homicides" rather than the "homicide rate climbs."

Fortunately we lost fewer police officers this year; maybe that's what made the difference.

Good point!!

All the cities revenue generation fine and fee schemes to extract money from the working class while painting it as having to do with a respect for the laws and implementing Broken Window crime methodology is driving people out and turning anger into rage for those left behind.

The people demanding that the laws be enforced are being locked up and the criminal bankers are granted impunity...and so the rage builds. The CPD is seen as the politicians hired thugs that the middle class has to pay protection money and extortion to.

Chicago lost 200,000 people in 10 years, from 2000 to 2010, or about 7% of its population. Annual murder totals for 2010 were 30% lower than those of 10 years before.

So over the time period for which your population comparison is valid, the murder rate clearly declined by an extraordinary amount.

The census figures you're using don't tell us anything about what happened to Chicago's population in the last year. It might be fair to assume that 1/10th of the decline happened in the last year -- 20,000, which is less than 1% of the population. So that would mean that the murder rate held steady.

The reality is that not much changed in the past year, but that Chicago is incredibly safer than it was prior to the changes instituted by Superintendant Cline, first in Harrison, and then across the city. The old mantra of HIllard and Needham that Chicago was different from New York and that the police just couldn't do much about murder was proven decisively wrong in 2003. We've reached a new plateau in a much safer city, and it's not clear what ELSE police can do. But the new strategies of 2003 made an enormous difference.

In the great Chicago tradition of embellishing numbers or flat out lying, the lower rate is accomplished by classifying murders as death investigations. Some of these eventually will be reclassified as murder sometime in spring when no one will pay much attention. So more than likely last years murder rate was higher than 2010. Gotta love the Chicago way.

Looking at the long term picure, in 2001 Chicago had 668 homicides. So over 10 years the homicide rate has declined over 35%. I don't think there was anything specific that McCarthy has done to have any major impact on the city's homicide rate, but in fairness to him he is constantly being told by Rahm to make due with less.

I think that we as an organization have done a lot over the past 10 years and I do believe that we deserve a little credit for a job well done.

What they weren't counting on was their credibility gap being exposed as a yawning chasm whirling with F6 tornadoes of fire, shit, debris and unburied dead...

Which means?

All these changes... Shutting and combining districts, madly shuffling intentionally diminished manpower can only mean one thing...

The powers that be DON'T HAVE AN ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM OTHER THAT FLOGGING THE SHIT OUT OF THE POOR POLICEMAN JUST BECAUSE HE HAS A BLUE SUIT ON!

Slightly O/T...

We worked out a plausible reason for the Great War on Police In Chicago...

The powers that be (the legacy criminal-political & media cabal of Chicago) would rather die
a "peckerwood's death" than admit that The Policeman, though imperfect, is representative of the conscience and ethos of the common sense, middle class captive taxpayer.

Destroy the Policeman and the good he stands for and these dirty, yellow-pinky stalinist colectivists will be able to score a massive propaganda coup in laying Chicago bare and remaking it in THEIR image... The citizen taxpayer will only exist to pay the taxes, fees, fines to keep the corrupt, stinking open pit graveyard of a city afloat since the catered to constituents are enjoying being pandered to...

They absolutely FEAR The Police getting their "mojo" back with the expressed consent of the oppressed middle class taxpayer whose fate IS INTERTWINED with that of The Policeman.

Their fear is The Police eventually and lawfully "coming after them" fully empowered with the will, ire and rightful anger of the people.

Look at today's part six article in a series in the Sunday Fibune about "Legendary Lawmen."

Hard men like Capt. Frank Pape imprisoning or sending criminal dogs to their doom quickly and with no questions asked if they even hinted at not surrendering quietly & meekly.

Their methods were rough, hard and imperfect sometimes just like Chicago is rough, hard and imperfect.

The people demanded The Police lay a hard, ruthless and even murderous hand (in the name of the law) on the necks of criminals who wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger themselves.

The people have no appetite for this even in these killing times...

But the onus IS on The Police to play it straight...

No second place winners in Police work... Pape had that figured from the beginning.

Now the criminal is the hero.

Heh... we wonder if Sylvester "Two-Gun Pete" Washington will be included in the series...

If Chicago (population: 2,695,598*) did indeed record 431 total criminal homicides during 2011, the homicide rate would be 16.0 per 100,000 population.

Based on preliminary counts from both New York City and Los Angeles, their 2011 homicide rates are less than half that of Chicago.

However, note that in specific Chicago districts/New York City precincts/Los Angeles divisions of all of the nations three largest cities, the homicide rate may approach 100.0 per 100,000 population (i.e.),CPD districts 007 and 011; certain NYPD precincts in Brooklyn and the Bronx and LAPD divisions in South Central Los Angeles).

* = SOURCE: U.S. Census Bureau 2010 data.

For hugely disparate homicide rates, a river and an international border can make a shocking difference. Compare the homicide rates of El Paso, TX with adjoining Ciudad Juarez, Mexico or Detroit, MI with adjoining Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

When you cherry pick your statistics, you can make them say anything you want. Basic statistics at any credible University.

The Nation as a whole has seen a huge decline in violent crime in the last ten years. Chicago has the absolute lowest drop in crime of all major metropolitan areas. So Chicago trends opposite the Nation on crime.

Credit whomever or whatever you want. Remember we closed all the worst projects and lost 200,000 people in that time frame.

When someone is throwing statistics at you all the time, be cognisant of the fact that they are providing their interpretation of those statistics. You can also be sure that they outright lying to you.

But if you look how many citizens were killed it is the same. Didn't the CPD lose 5 guys to gun fire in 2010 compared to 1 in 2011? CPD's administrative figurehead Garry McCarthy loves the phrase "drill down" (a nonsense, corporate-speak platitude, but I digress) during his CompStat bully sessions. What is meant by that is not accepting raw numbers from the Commander on the hot seat, but looking deeper into what those numbers mean. Well, it's time for McCarthy to take a turn in that hot seat.

The following sentence is from a Tribune story about the 2010 census and Chicago's neighborhoods, and I agree with the author, it is "stunning." Englewood, mind you, showed a dramatic increase in homicide numbers this year:

"Particularly stunning was the flight from Englewood, an impoverished neighborhood on the South Side that lost more than 9,500 people — nearly a quarter of its residents — during the decade, according to the census. Nearly 10,000 more left neighboring West Englewood."

The point of the story is that Chicago's dramatic population loss would have been much greater had it not been offset by in-migration to the city's central neighborhoods. In plain English; far fewer poor folk and a lot more yuppies.

Any talk of homicide totals must be placed in the context of, not only a diminished population total, but a radically shifted population demographic. The question is, will any media outlet hold McCarthy to account, as he is so fond of doing with his Commanders. It's time for him to "drill down" and explain why the strategies he has implemented in the past year, upon closer inspection, have been an abject failure.

OT I am no longer clicking on Shaved's website. He has gone over the line and does not represent the Chicago Police Officer's mindset that I have personally witnessed for the last 25 years. His posts on that the Mexican guy in Waukegan and those teenagers who died in the car accident on 57 were bad enough but the final nail in the coffin was his mocking article on that 18 year old girl savagely attacked by the Congress Theater.

Here is my mindset which is widely reflected in my own large circle of Chicago Police Officers that I consider to be my brothers and sisters: Criminals (both black and white) are selfish animals that need to be put down as Sean Connery said in the Untouchables "They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way".

The law allows a measured response to violent offenders which admittedly has been tampered down since I joined the force in 1986.

The vast majority of the population, workers, the elderly, children etc are the people we as sworn Chicago Police Officers do everything we can do to protect on a daily basis.

I am proud of what I and other Chicago Police Officers have done to protect the good people of Chicago from harm and will continue to do so despite poor management, bad bosses, and the terrible jury pool of Cook County.

I refute the message that I have seen on Shaved's website and I officially requests that my other Blue Brothers and Sisters join me in shunning it.

Im sure the shootings are up more than any year since the mid 90s.. medical technology and people not going straight for the head anymore and just hitting in the legs and ass are bringing down the homicide numbers... either way, its still a sh*thole

I would say percentages DO matter. If you have four hundred homicides in a town with three million people, it's a bit different than if you have four hundred homicides in a town with one million people.

If the number of homicides stays the same, but the population keeps dropping, then something's wrong. There is no improvement'. Quite the opposite.

And of course the Tribune would end the article about 2012's first homicide with this choice of words:

"Police recovered three shell casings at the scene of the shooting, as evidence technicians processed the SUV for evidence, police said.

No arrests had been made in the shooting.

Perez couldn't immediately confirm that the man was the city's first slaying. Technically, the year's first homicide belongs to police, who fatally shot Michael Smith, 52, after authorities said he pointed a handgun at officers in Marquette Park just 10 minutes into the new year."

WTF???

Snow packed and unplowed with what like a 1/4 inch of show? Idiot!!!

10 car accident you say. We have been driving in ice and snow for how long in Chicago??? My guess would be that all involved were driving to fast for conditions.

You need to get out of the City more often boy...

Go a little further north where they have a lot more snow and ice and 2/3 of the roads never get plowed let alone salted.

I guess it is just easier to blame it on the City and not the way these fools drive.

The truth is Chicago is not safer. More people are being robbed and beaten. More people are being shot. The reason the homicide numbers are down is because medical treatment has gotten better then it was in past years. More people are being shot today then in the past, but the Doctors are keeping people alive, when in the past the person would have died. So, I don't agree with the above post. This city is no way close to being a safe city. The politicians and the corrupt reverends let crime get out of control in this city. Gang problems are out of control.

And of cource the killing of crime that has been going on for years.Wonder why the feds do not accept stats from shitcago.

Safer city?

It's one thing when the thugs are attacking their own, afterall that is the life they choose.

It's another thing when they go downtown for the easy pickings on the Michigan Mile, on the CTA, and quiet suburbs like Indian Head Park. Then they post videos of themselves laughing on the internet after they commit their crimes against society.

Ask those victims if they think it is safer now.

Ok starting with the diaspora of the project people we see a steady decline in murders, this is a result of the fact the poor people do more crime ( it really has nothing to do with race).
Public housing shipped a great many of the former residents, maybe 200,000 to the suburbs, what has happen to the crime rate in those suburbs?

Parolee celebrating arrival of 2012 arrested for firing gun

By Rosemary Sobol
Tribune reporter
1:55 PM CST, January 2, 2012

A parolee who was sporting 2012 glasses with flashing blue lights was arrested after police saw him fire a pistol into the air minutes into the New Year Sunday on the West Side, police said.

Elbert Brown Jr., 38, of the 4500 block of South Lavergne Avenue, was arrested at 12:12 a.m. Sunday and charged with being an armed habitual criminal, police said. Brown was also served with a warrant for violating his parole.

Police were called to an alley in the 600 block of North Kedzie Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood and saw Brown, who was wearing eye glasses formed from the numbers 2012, use his right hand to pull a pistol from his left waistband, according to a police report.

When Brown pointed the pistol upwards towards the sky and discharged three rounds, officers approached him with their guns drawn, told Brown they were police officers, and ordered him to drop the weapon, the report said.

He complied and was taken into custody without further incident. A .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol with a 4-inch barrel -- and the glasses -- were recovered by police.

Court records show Brown was paroled in April, 2011, for an involuntary manslaughter case for which he was sentenced to ten years in prison. He also has felony convictions for weapons and drug charges and an attempted armed robbery, court records show.

Superintendent McCarthy is just playing the shuffle game with personnel. The reality is is that he nor the people he brought with him have true street experience. Any officer that wears a long sleeve shirt in the summer is first and for most a true give away! Isn't it a coincidence that all three of them wear our uniform? What is it with wimpy ass wanna be police always fighting where our uniform! What happened to it being earned not given! Another Weissell crew!

All jokes aside, looking at his record of street level experience, the moves he is making is simply bureaucratic. Also, he has no class as a Superintendent. He makes remarks at all of the Comp stat meetings regarding any SCC rumor or any other rumor that spreads about him. Also, how can he sign off on firing people for offenses he was tried and convicted on? He is a hot head with a problem with the bottle and everyone knows that! Look at the OCD Christmas party. Enough said!

He also has no balls. Why keep rewarding incompetence? Why does Eddie Welch, Tony Carothers and now Terry Williams who is going to the D Unit, why keep rewarding them? Why keep people around like Beatrice Cuello with all of her baggage? Why keep her boy in all sense of the word, Eugene Williams around. He is completely maxed out isn't he? But he continues to der her bidding. The Dinosaur time is over! I keep forgetting, the ministers want him and Ron Holt around. Ron Holt, another complete lunatic and embarrassment for this department. He is the same Exempt that was on the list of excessive Brutality beefs, he has a known problem with the bottle, he talks to ghosts, he has no clue at what his unit or job is, he is the same person that was on the radio saying his budget was not for public discussion! WTF?

You also have the same old good old boy mentality being the foundation of this department. Commander O'Grady has already told everyone he is about to be a Street Deputy, but he has never been a District Commander, nor worked in the capacity he will be overseeing. He also told his people not to worry because Kevin Navarro who has also never been a District Commander, will be taking over Narcotics. Kevin Ryan says he will be a Street Deputy also and he is only doing his time, nothing more until he is gone, as well as Judy Martin, Kennedy and Lucy Moy, Aunt Bea's girl. Debra Kirby and Steve Georgas want Tena Skahil gone as does the rest of the regime. Looks like this will be happening.

Wysinger by the way is a figure head. The Superintendent's two cronies run right over him.

I look forward to working my beat everyday and the schedule makes it even more worthwhile, but it is getting harder and harder doing it as we are getting fucked each step of the way!

If the Medical Examinaer rules a death a homicide, then its ore than likely to stay a 0110.

I've handled death investigations that by the nature of the circumstances, I knew were a 0110, but without a Medical Examiner being able to rule it one, well, your shit out of luck unless someone stands up and confesses, and we know that dont happen.

CW lives in the city, next to a big park, in Roseland, around 120th and the ivy League streets. Anyone who has worked in 5 knows where she lives and that it is true.

Well, that explains it! If I lived in Roseland, I'd be a miserable SOB too.

I do not like Shave either. He does not represent most of the CPD.

I do not know if the Credit Union gave him money to advertise their new location. I have been meaning to call to find out. If they are giving him money, I will take my money out of that institution.

Careful. If we take credit for the decline we'll have to take blame for the inevitable increase.

In the UCR Crime Index, criminal homicide (murder and non-negligent manslaughter) does NOT include justifiable homicides by citizens including law enforcement.

The first recorded criminal homicide of 2012 occurred in the CPD 17th District.

"Technically", the Tribune and Sun-Times can shove their "8th District (justifiable) homicide" by the police up their asses with their sarcastic semantics bullshit. UCR guidelines apply.

Completely agreed! I can't believe the racist garbage that moron posts, and no one has ever mistaken me for a Liberal. Shaved is obviously a south sider!

A few weeks back Stienberg blasted the "racist police blogs", and while SCC took offense, I really believe the Ultra Lib media hack was referring to Shaved.

Shaved might edit less than SCC, but I'm glad SCC has taken some sort of stand against the language that paints us all under the same brush.

All the more ridiculous when you consider that Shaved's identity is pretty well known. I guess a guy who decorated the Unit Christmas tree with pics of his Shaved Long cock doesn't think he has anything to hide in the first place...

Shaved does NOT speak for me!

If 9:24 PM ("2011 HOMICIDE RATES") is accurate, Chicago has nothing to brag about in homicide reduction. Chicago's homicide RATE (16.0)) is over twice to almost three times worse than that of New York City (6.1) and Los Angeles (7.7).

Assuming that the reporting agency is not "cooking the books", the only valid method of comparison is incidents per 100,000 population, not raw numbers.

Local media thrives on Chicago's Kool-Aid. Hardball questions are taboo.

Well, we know how to handle those jobs.

Hey dipshit, the census is taken every 10 years! 200,418 in the last 10 years.

That's an average of just over 10K per year for dumbasses such as yourself to comprehend.

The Demmocommunist Chicago Politicians are to blame, not the Cops. They've ALWAYS been soft on crime, as they are Criminals themselves, for the most part

im sure youve been saying that for the past three supt.. Lets call it what it is.. your a lazy dog. stop blaming it on the boss. Its a nice try at an excuse as why you dont do anything but trust me we all know the truth. There are a handful of guys like you at every single roll call. We have known you for years. For years you havent done a damn thing. sos scandal came around and you said you werent doing a thing. weis came around and you said im not doing anything hes a fed, rahm and mccarthy came in and once again you said, thats the reason im not doing anything... yeah right, you havent been doing anything for the past 15 years. Youve never been in trouble a day in your life and havent worked a hard day. you love to tell your police stories to your non police friends and family but when you have to be the police at work you are terrified. dont try and make it all right by adding on to the end of your post about how your fellow officers need you for back up yada yada yada. Im sure your not going balls out to get to that back up because your too afraid to be on the paper.. then you might have to show up for court or in some cases might end up on a civil case. please, stop with your excuses...we all know the real reason why you dont do work...woof!

1/02/2012 02:33:00 PM

Very simple...it went up, providing the 'burbs UCR's are correctly reported.

Ok you call the other poster a dipshit and a dumbass but you can't do simple math. By your words the census is every 10 years and according to you 200,000 left in those 10 years then that = 20k per year have left. Catholic school math says 200,000 divided by 10 = 20,000 not 10,000 like you state above. But good attempt to put the other poster down with your public school math.

The Indian Head Park home invader who stabbed the little 14-year-old girl to death over some alleged coin collection took her cell phone along, and used it to send jokes and insults to the dead child's mother.

I dunno what to say except "malfunctioning electric chair -- and deliberately kept that way."

I know. "Neanderthal." Just an old throwback, that's me.

Me and Elmer Keith, down in the rec room with a fine bourbon an' a bottle a' Hoppe's 9. So it leads -- so you clean it afterwards.

There.

The mayor has a new deal. Brewing in which the deal for the parking meters will change. The city gets the meter business back after ten more years but allows meters to be installed on all city streets.!!!!!!!!
Once again tax payers take it in the neck, you better have a garage or you will being paying to park on the street all of them

The huge changes are:

1. Knocking down the jets and sending the feral criminal filth to the burbs. The south suburbs, formerly nice, are borderline unlivable due to all the shitheads. You cut cancer out, you don't spread it around. What fucking assclown came up with that idea?

2. Improved medical care, mainly GSW/trauma medicine. I find it absolutely disgusting that all the radical and absolutely revolutionary medical advances bought at the cost of our young men and women in Iraq, Astan and elsewhere are being used to keep parasitic criminal fucks alive to destroy more taxpayer resources. No money=no medical care. All these crippled up fucks in the ghetto ought to have been dead years ago.
