Good News
We don't know about anyone else, but this story is nothing but good news for Chicago Police Officers. Only one of the twenty eight original Robert Taylor project building is still standing as of today - and that one is scheduled to come down at the end of the year.
Last month, the final two buildings of Ogden Courts (2710 and 2650) started undergoing demolition. The low rises behind the Courts were gone years ago. The ABLA Homes are a shell of it's former self - last time we checked, 3 of the 6 remaining high rises were fenced off and set for destruction. About half of the ABLA low rises have been bulldozed and another portion is slated for destruction. We drove by the Ida B Homes a few weeks ago and saw a bunch of those gone, too. Horner fading fast. Stateway almost. Rockwell not long for the west side. What's left? Dearborn? Lathrop? Altgeld?
We have no doubt (though few mention it) that the relocation of dope operations from these buildings contributed mightily to the homicide rate of the late 90's early 00's. As the "market forces" establish themselves and "territory" is sorted out, expect the rate of killings to continue a slow fall.
UPDATE: Post corrected for Ida B instead of Ickes. But we read that Ickes are coming down anyway soon.

I cannot wait to get out of this hell hole of a district I work in. I cant understand for the life of me how my fellow Police Officers can work in this type of enviroment day in and day out having to deal with such discusting low life animals. And all you can do is look and show Police presence hoping they dispurse without any Police officers getting hurt.
I am truley going to get out. I am not going to raise a family in a hell whole like this. I am truley greatfull for my job and the great coppers I work with, however I cant just sit and do nothing about an anamalistic bunch/race of people that is allowed to act like a bunch of drunkin animals and is positively rewarded by this city's Politicians and liberal groups to act as so.
I love being the Police. How did this Police Department let the streets go like this. I am afraid for the children I dont even have yet. I dont want them to grow up with these animals. Well ladies and gentlemen , the news on public housing is this. The remnents of Robert Taylor and Stateway are coming down as we can all clearly see. The Dearborns are going to be rehabbed and are staying up. The Ickes are next to fall. All of the residents are given the option to remain in public housing or accept section 8 vouchers to go anywhere in the country, and some are taking advantage of that fact. However all of the suburbs that surround Chicago have to make areas of their city available for section 8 residents or face losing federal monies. Therefore brace yourself those of you in the lily white suburbs "the black man is coming to a neighborhood near you!"
Altgeld/Murray Homes are 90% vacant and are currently being rehabbed, when I talk to the residents there (yeah I work in 005) they inform me that they are given the option to move to the homes in 006 at 95th Street or take the section 8 trip. A lot of the former residents of public housing that cannot qualify for any of these programs are coming to a district near you, so brace yourself coppers in the slow districts for the influx of gang bangers and sex offenders that will be overwhelming you and your watch. Watch this summer when the "gang/narcotic wars really heat up". Can anyone say " Out of control Homicide Rate?"

If the government had not subsidized concentrations of poverty in the manner it did, these problems would likely have disappeared years ago.
Look at the older cities of Europe and South America. Don't bother with France where they just concentrated public housing in the suburbs. Look at places where there is no such thing as public housing.
In South America, the slums are on the outskirts. In Europe, any poverty is on the outskirts and countryside. There is no way that the areas closest to the geographic and cultural jewels should ever have been ceded to public housing in the first place.
I'm a Republican, but don't get me wrong. If they are going to do this stuff at all it should be done as Section 8. And there ought to be a COMPLETE ban on concentrating Section 8 anywhere. The North Shore votes for politicians who support vouchers? Than the North Shore shouldn't be exempt from section 8 vouchers just because its expensive up there. Tell every community that they better accomodate *some* zoning that allows for multi-unit habitation, where one unit (but NOT any concentration of units) in some buildings could be used for section 8.
If everyone is subject to the effects (the way that *certain* neighborhoods of Chicago bore the great majority of the burden for Chicago), than perhaps we could get a more accurate plebiscite vote as to whether we as a people really want to be subsidizing someone else's poverty. For. 10. Generations. In. Some. Cases.
Stop the fedral section 8 money. Make them get off their lazy usless butts and get a job to support them and they 9 babies.

What bubble have you been living in? Since they started tearing down the projects these people have been using seciton 8 vouchers and moving enmasse to the suburbs.
Look at Naperville, Schaumburg, Plainfield, Tinley Park, Orland, to name a few. Read the news paper, look up the TV news online, look at the crime spurts in those areas. The mutts have arrived and are living there! He's up in the 016th District, he's in 022 and he's in the west end of 008. No where/one is going to be exempt from this Section 8 voucher BS.
All you can hope for is that there aren't that many Apts. in your area or that they are all gonna go Condo.

As projects go, they're not too bad, but right before I went on furlo a while back, a hurricane fence was put up and all the lower windows were boarded up on one building. I thought, "Great, this will be gone when I get back." Imagine my surprise when I got back and saw that it was being rehabed.
Go by Western and VanBuren. Where Rockwell used to be (1 building still stands) there's a big sign for new townhomes and condos. That's just what I want to do..get robbed walking home from the El.

Sect 8 artificially inflates housing prices. Think about it. You house costs more because this program is ineffect. If a ghetto family can't pay the rent, Sect 8 it out! If no yuppie doesn't buy your new construction condo that you are caught flipping, Sect 8 it out! The G will pay way more than what the free market would allow.
Look past the black and white, detectives! Sect 8 is communism for land lords. Rather than letting the free market make its way, they have the G help them along, inflating the price for everyone!

There was one black officer that showed up on scene that night in 025 (at Lemoyne & Central)...He said he was embarrased at what he saw.
CHAC Vouchers are like section 8 in ways except true Sect. 8 pays for only part of your rent. CHAC Vouchers pay for your entire market value rent. CHA relocations are covered under CHAC. CHAC vouchers are only accepted in residential areas with less than 10% poverty. You won't be able to get that multi-unit building at 72 and Morgan occupied by CHAC Voucher tenants. Now if you were at 63 and Austin or Devon and Harlem you could get as many as you want.
Public Housing was privatized by Daley and Clinton almost 7 years ago. CHAC Vouchers are fast becomming the norm of public housing nationwide!

The problem with these vouchers are enforcing the lease terms that CHAC voucher holders live under. If a family or family member becomes a public nusiance in a particular neighborhood, terminate the lease. If a household member commits a felony, terminate the lease. There are hundreds of families living in neighborhoods that are law abiding. If you are too ignorant to appreciate the opportunity given you,then you shouldn't have it. And people who go to work everyday and pay a mortgage or market rate rent shoudn't have to suffer the burden of living around such people.

You'll have to suffer looking at the "refugees" from the projects for a few years, but the situation is far from permanent. As the financial insolvency of government Federal,State,County and local becomes more apparent,(It's already the 800lb gorilla in the room everyone pretends not to see.)fiscal cuts will be made. The voucher program will be among the first to go. Our country is in staggering debt.The war in Iraq, taking care of our disabled veterans, rebuilding New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast on top of one of the largest defecits in history is going to bring this country to it's collective financial knees UNLESS concessions are made. The tax pool is shrinking. Wal Mart has passed GM as one of our countries largest employers.We'll all be paying hiher taxes for less service. In a few years, if you can't afford a mortgage or market rate rent you won't have a Chicago zip code. The city will be gentrified by default and the new ghetto will be the south suburbs.
