Field Training?
OK, this is one of the goofiest ideas we've seen in a long time - and believe us, we've seen some goofy ones. Starting 09 January, they are sending all of the new detectives out for ONE WEEK to do field training in all of the Areas. Two days with H/S/G, Two days with R/B/T, and one day with SVU. All will be assigned to days for the week.
Huh? Field training? Why not just keep them for the full 5 or 6 weeks and let them do their field training on the job? Did the instructors need a vacation? Is this some scam to boost "training hours?"

When I made Dick, the training was 4 weeks long. That was long enough. I dont know how many three stooges videos they plan on showing the new dicks for this many weeks.

What's the harm in it? If you've seen how short the Areas are, you'd know. If you've seen how short the Districts are, you'd wonder why they weren't hiring more. Screw this Field Training, get those bodies on the fuk'n case loads and clear up some backlogs. Hire some fuk'n people so I can get X-mas off and I might be able to get a 6B insterad of getting stuck at 5 all the time.

Diversity has nothing to do with it. When i call 911 or am involved in a police shooting I want the best officer/det. to respond and handle the issue. What you imply is that we should pay more attention to the color of ones skin than what occurs inside their heads. Thats just flat out BS. The Sergeants in the areas are doing "some" stuff but only in the faster areas from what I hear....I hear A1 ,A2 and A4 are having them work on cases etc...but I also heard that the guys in A3 are doing NOTHING!!! they say that they could close the place and get along just fine!! LOL! I don't know about A5 either?? any news let us know??
Someone said the new dicks need to get out there because there are backlogs. You gotta be kinding me. No gets promoted on this job because they are hard workers. NO ONE. You must be a rookie to say that. The clearance rate on the CPD is so far in the shitter it isn't even funny. Some dicks do work hard (they did so as patrolmen). A lot don't. It's up to them how hard there gonna work. Problem is no gets promoted on CPD because they were hard workers. Shit we don't even have a system to say who is a hard worker and who isn't. Maybe you were hard working as a patrolman and made Sgt or Detective. That is just coincidental. Hard work is not a requirment to get promoted. You can hold off on all the Sgt's and Detective promotions till the end of time because it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference. The only one's who are gonna do any work are those that came on the job with a work ethic. Any cop with half a brain doesn't need a Sgt or detective to do their job. The only time the majority of dicks even want to get involved at all is when the patrol has everything in a tight little package for them (offender, motive, weapon used, wittness's). The detective that do have a work ethic, you'll see on the street working on their own cases. It's ridiculous. The Sgt's are the same deal.

A work ethic is great, but certainly not gonna do you any good on this job. Or maybe you could prove me wrong. Show me where hard work is recognized on the department. This should be good.
Personnaly I don't understand how anyone can complain about this job. It still pays good and your not required to do shit except answer your 911 calls. So you don't have clout. big deal. You'll never find a job in the civilian market that pays as well and requires so little. And you have so much room to abuse the system, my favorite is the medical and IOD. There are so many push-over bosses out there that with even a little sucking up you have people abusing the medical in ways I would never have dreamed of (and don't even think I'm talking about the women, the men on this job are just as bad). You show me the cilian job that allows you to get away with that or another department that lets its' officers get away with that.
Remember being a Detective is NOT a promotion, it does not denote rank. There are working det's and dog ass det's just like PO's.
I have seen some real good working coppers make Det. and some REAL dog ass coppers make it.
I do believe a majority of Det.S have super egos but I guess that comes w/ the assignment.

Its a raise in pay, different title code and only Dets can bid for a D unit and only Dets can close a case. I know those of you who are not Dets like to make yourself feel better by saying it is not a promotion so go ahead and keep saying it. I'm happy just the same and don't need your approval.
And by the way, the new Dets are going to the areas, along with their Cook county and Suburban Brethren for a week for some experience. It is something new they are trying and while I don't always agree with the Dept, how about we wait a week and see how it works before some of you know it alls start bashing it.

Usually the good hardworking detectives have to be pulled off the case they are working on because another shit for brains Patrolman has stepped in again and then we have to come out and clean your fucking mess up for to save your worthless ass from getting fired and going to jail.

It is recognized, but only by others with the same "ethic". A Det, or Sgt, Lt and Capt, who worked was a P/O, and I stress the word "worked", will, for the most part, reward a working patrolman. There are a few who; 1) forgot where they came from 2)the rank went right to their head 3) just fucking gave up. For the most part, from what I've seen, will look out for "the working police" any way they can. But remember, a Beat Sgt/Lt, W/C cant get you promoted, or into a unit. "gun-n-gone", "forgeting" to turn in a slip, or "padding" a OT slip is well within their scope, but awards go thrugh other channels (like a house mouse). The other thing I have observed is the above mentioned things are becoming fewer and fewer, which really sucks! On the other hand, there is a lot of cops out there that think they deserve something for nothing! "why dont you hold my slip?" or "Why cant I get 2 on the end?" and the constantly bring in 2 parkers, 2 movers, and a fucking ANOV. If they would bring in a gun , hot car, Burg. arrest,,,, They might get something. Along with this rant, whoever posted at 8:27pm also hit the nail on the head too! THIS JOB IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT! You want to work, well, work. Want to be a dogass, well, be a dogass, jut get the fuck out of the way, and try not to fuck things up for the rest of us. I don't see any higher rate of hard working cops in the detective division or the supervisor ranks. That's a problem. Especially in the supervisor ranks. If the guy took that silly ass test that says he knows scenerios (not General Orders or the law because that doesn't help for promotion) then he's gonna handle what needs to be handled. You gotta be kinding me. If you have a lazy supervisor or lazy detective and God forbid you do need their help then your screwed. All I'm saying is that before you make someone a detective or Sgt you should have to show that once upon a time they actually made a felony arrest that ended up with a conviction. Maybe even more than one. Hey those guys from 011 should be all in favor of this since they were all such hard workers anyway.
The real shame is that I believe you have bosses on this job that don't retire because their afraid the next guy coming on to replace them will be some piece of shit who will shit all over their workers and make life miserable for them. The fact is that a boss or detective who actually was a working copper will usually take care of people better than one who wasn't.
The last thing a boss wants to hear when he retires is how his replacement is the biggest dick head in the world and now everyone is miserable and transferring out. We see this all the time in detective division-district.
All of you are forgetting one thing: as fucked up as the detective division is, when you are involved in a shooting you are getting some of the very best detectives in any police department in this country. There are a lot of detectives, but only a few are allowed to do police shootings. And you can bet your ass that the detectives who do the police shootings are hard working detectives just as they were hard working patrolmen. And I am not or ever was a detective. I am just someone with alot of time on the job and I've been involved in a few shootings.

Look, I try not to bash people on this board. Maybe this makes sense, If the person was a goof as a patrolman, then they most likely will be a goof as a detective or sergeant and beyond.
It cuts both ways. It really sucks for a good patrolman to have a decent arrest, only to have a goofy Detective screw it up. The other way around is when a decent detective has to deal with ren and stimpy and their screwed up paper and case.
Just add a nitwitted sergeant into the mix and now we have everybody really happy, don't we?
Back to my original point. Work ethic not required for promotion. When you need a dick or Sgt or patrol man you roll the dice and see what you get. Not much we can do about the patrolman except have supervisors and comrades ride his ass if he's a dog. But for the Sgts and Dicks, if not require that they make a felony arrest while in patrol at least have it known- This guy was never the police- no record of him arresting someone for UUW, Agg Batt, etc. Some of these people hardly worked the street. It's ridiculous. It needs to change. You don't even have to know the general orders or law to get promoted. Any half-way smart guy off the street can pass that first part of the promotional exam with a minimum score. It's a ridiculous system. At least make the first part of the exam count for something. If you don't have good knowledge of the General Orders or State law/Const Amendments you shouldn't be a dick or Sgt.
I agree. I've been a Sgt for 15 years. There are a lot supervisors who don't know the general orders or state law like they should. The minimum score for the first part of the test should be 90%, or just make the first part count towards your ranking. Same for the dicks.
That would eliminate all the merit candidates, so that'll never happen. They are the 20-30% who don't know the law/orders.
The overwhelming majority of patrolmen who bitch and moan about the job and the promotional practices are dog-ass do-nothing mother fuckers who want some thing for nothing. I've been on this job 22 years and it never changes...

Half the class didn't know how to fill out a 101. Only on this job is that believable. The meritorious stuff is a problem. If only 10-20% of my class didn't know how fill out a 101 I might be able to live with that.
Like I said it's ridiculous. Have the first part of the test count toward your score and raise the standard for the first part (pass/fail) or don't raise the standard for the meritorious. I don't care. Any change would be an improvement. Require at least on felony arrest that resulted in a conviction. It could be a one bagger. Now it could be a TVB (suspended license-no insurance). Just anything.

This blog should used to exchange ideas. A little bit of personnel bashing is O.K., but coppers get way to carried away with it. I'm proposing ideas on how we can improve the promotional system. Right now I can't imagine a worse system than what's in place. I'm not trying to scare everyone, but something simple like the one felony arrest should be acceptable to even most of the clout babies. It would be in everyones best interest.

During the Gulf War, the field uniform was a detectives uniform. Granted, that was during war time.
Moses didn't come down from the mountain with stone tablets saying 'detectives shall not wear they uniform,' so answer the question. I'm only referring to St. Jude, that's all. Why don't all sworn members wear their uniforms on that day? NYPD detectives do, and I'm sur a majority of CPD detectives would if the higherups said so.
