Unsubstantiated Rumor

We are hearing the beginnings of a rumbling that the people contracted to the city to remove dead bodies is possibly having problems - maybe even about to withdraw services. Anyone have info? Anyone know what will happen if they do pull out? Wagon guys going to start getting D-3 again for moving the deceased?

Well from what I can tell, there used to be a 1 hr window after the front desk notifies the removal service, and now the window has been changed to 1 hr 20 mins of tying up a unit to wait with a cadaver. I may not be an accountant and only a high school graduate, but seems to me that that it is not cost efficient for the amount of paper work and the holding down of an active (normally 2 man) unit, instead of just having the wagon haul for d3 pay.

Listen here, squad... As long as none of my 30 sector cars are held down on that detail I'm alright with it, besides I have to drum up some arrests for them, you know I can't have them driving around for more than 5 minutes without creating work for them, or catching an offender from some B.S. drug related battery which would have been a solid 19b. Remember guys, don't even think of going into the 10 or 20 sectors. That is all. TEEEE/ESSSSSS

If you use your department issued locking device, and a thief takes the gun, don't you think he'll cut it off? Is anyone stupid enough to say they didn't have the device on?

But are you right, weapons need to be secured, and not kept in a drawer , unless a trigger lock is on it.

If Daley had his way, we'd be locking up our weapons at the station, if he allowed us to have them at all. This does not apply to his bodyguards though

Gun Safes, if room in your home permits, are the best and safest way to secure your weapon, obviously. The weight itself is enough to ensure safety. Accessibility when needed immediately is an issue though. God Forbid we need to use, or potentially use our weapon? Do we have to fumble throuh a combination and waste that time? No matter what, there are pleanty of measures that must be taken, but that cable lock they gave us is a joke.

It's a Joke. We should start a company and all the wagon guys can have a good paying side-job. That is, if they don't mind it. I am not stereotyping wagon guys.

I propose that there be a binding referendum where approximately the northernmost quarter of the City of Chicago secedes to Harwood Heights, Norridge, Evanston, Park Ridege, Morton Grove, Lincolnwood, Skokie, etc. or forms a new City

Hypothetically, Grand Avenue from Navy Pier to Harlem Avenue becomes the new northern border of the current City of Chicago.

Current Chicagoans must also be provided with a mayoral recall referendum law like many other progressive cities (and states). This is not so much for the incumbent. His successor could even be worse Once elected, we're stuck with a mayor for four years barring incarceration or death.

First, the city does not real care whether the company quits or terminates the contract. If the city paids the POs sergeants pay for the removal, it would be cheaper than what the compnay charges. The compnay has been dragging their feet for aleast 6 months.

During the bid process, there were only two qualfied companies, the one selected and another company that charged 3x the current company. I believe the current company also does it in St. Louis. But the other bids were somewhat funny -- none having experience before -- like Bob's towing and now body removal.

The whole body removal system was designed to fail. There are just somethings that cannot be totally privatized. It would have been much better to consult with the Medical Examiner's office and the Funeral industry, create a training program, then purchase vehicles and hire people to do the removals. There would have been more control and oversight.

We would actually be able to contact them ourselves and get a response. If the delays are affecting operations, the hammer will fall and keep on falling. Privatization is not the only answer.

Most common female police phrase, while working of course, "I like responding to the calls, but I don't like the court." Well court is part of the job. I would like to see the number of good, on-view arrests, i.e. UUW, large weight, robbery, etc. that a (2) female car made. I better it is less that 10 per year, citywide. The posts above are correct -- women police officers at 26 (or Bridgeview) compared to number working at 35th Street.

So what!! If you want order, go to church, or join the military, or go to a counseling on a particular issue and talk, debate.

But, regards to the issue, the post above is correct, the Bur. of Admin. did a spreadsheet, which showed that the city actually saves money if POs did the removal at D3 pay. So the company no longer wants to do it, and the city does not real care. The only concern for the city was when this company pulls out, how much notice would be given and how quickly could the Police Department implement a plan to take it over. That's it - issue over.

I was down their for a one day seminar and ther were more female POs, SGTs, LTs, and Cpts walking around then I have ever seen anywhere else on this job.
And in case you didn't see the Det and Sgt promotional list. There are several females promoted meritoriously to detective and several meritoriously to sgt all working in units at headquarters and all with less than 10 yrs on the job.

How long does the department need to impleament a plan to take it over? How about 1 minute. It was done by us before and could be done by us again. That is what is great about this department people think that they need three months and four seperate pilot programs to see if something works. Correct me if I am working which I am not, were we not responsible for removal before this program? Was it not done quicker because we did not sit around waiting for someone we just put them in the wagaon and left when the crime lab was done. Do not give me the blah blah blah about the wagon being down transporting a body, like I said it worked before and would still work now.

All that is needed is to copy and paste the policy now regarding the upgrade in pay to the officers and fax it out. Not to hard to do for the 100's of people sitting around 35th

Man is robbed across the street from police headquarters

Published January 5, 2006

A brazen pair of robbers held up a man at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon across the street from the headquarters of the Chicago Police Department, authorities said.

At 2:30 p.m., the two men pulled a gun on the 60-year-old victim at 168 E. 35th St., police said. Police headquarters is located at 3510 S. Michigan Ave.

The robbers reached into the man's pockets and took an undisclosed amount of cash and then fled, police said.

The robbers headed east on 35th Street, which is usually lined with marked and unmarked police cars, and often dotted with police personnel approaching and leaving the headquarters building.

Police had no suspects in the robbery.

Regarding wagons, I'm surprised at the tone here regarding who should handle body removals. Personally, I'd like to see it done well by whoever handles it.

But no way is my first choice for handling it gonna be wagons or any police. There are a few situations where the wagon is the foremost thing I want to see. Like mentals, crowd disturbances, 10-1s generally.

Put the old timers on the wagons and exempt them from taking any calls. Or, if nothing else, exempt dispatchers from tying up their last wagon on a zone from anything except for police emergency requests.

Bodies? Screw that. Let the FD, the ME or ANYONE else do it. It ain't police work, has nothing to do with public order in almost any cases, and ties up equipment that should be reserved for us to use when WE need it.

Keeping in line with past practices within the department, I propose the following. Create a specialized unit consisting of 10 female patrol officers with clout. Have them overseen by a female sgt. and female lt. Assign them to patrol wagons picking up bodies citywide.
I'm not even suggesting this will work in any way, shape, or form. It's just creating a new spot for someone to oversee while taking care of the pampered few. You know just like things are now.

The only question is, what unit would you call it?

What the hell would the FD remove a dead body? Last I checked and ambulanced is used to carry live people in needed of a hospital for additional treatment. Great idea to tie up an ambulance so when you or one of your family needs one they are farther off and then when they arrive they can transport your dead body to the morge.

1/05/2006 07:14:00 PM

That's pretty funny! Before there were FD ambulances, what the hell do you think was used?

Why wagons! Can you believe that? They once took a function away from the PD and it still managed to function, albeit with bosses and personnel no less stupid and useless than before.

If they took the first function away from the PD, they sure as hell can take the second function away. Like I said, its got nothing to do with the charge of the PD in 98% of cases.

But you are right. No reason to use ambulances. How about we give the FD 5 or 10 wagons for starts. Hell, I'LL cover the costs of paining them red and black.

It would give some of the useless fat fucks something to do besides sit around a fire house and drink.

You are a complete moron. What is the difference between the FD being given wagons to transport the bodie or the us the wagons to transport the body? If you are using the arguement that when the wagon transports a body they are done and not available for calls is that not the same as when the Fd would have to transport a body and then they are not available for calls?

"It would give some of the useless fat fucks something to do besides sit around a fire house and drink."

You are right because there are not people like that with the
PD. The department basically is handing out free money with the yearly fitness test yet less than 10% of the people sign up for it.

I think it is a riot trying to watch some of these people get in and out of cars and trying to fit into uniforms that they have had for only a year.

As for the Fd not doing anything, you must work in some nice slow place because if you ever worked in any of the shits wholes and actually did something on the street you would notice their trucks and ambulances on the street as much as ours.

If you get a spot great, if you don't great...just do the job...no bitching about somebody w/ a spot, unless you'd take the bitchin when your buddy/mother/father/uncle/wife hooks you up...

TRUTH: You're service was bought and paid for, give them their monies worth or get another job (chicks & dudes).

Ok, I take exception to all the female bashing. Yes, there are some on the job who are useless and clueless. Like the time my partner, who was driving, drove right past a guy ripping out a car stero. I asked her, " Did you see that?" She just looked at me and kept on driving. Our parnership ended that night.

A few highlight from my 17 years on the job: I've changed 5 flats by myself (that was the first thing my Dad taught me how to do when I learned to drive); caught 2 armed robbers, at the same time, working 10-99, when the assigned beat car (2 guys) was seen by the WC driving the other way; while a PPO, myself and another female caught a guy (and he was a big motherf*cker)who just fired a shotgun through a house; and I can still fit in my original wool pants!

I love working the streets and court is the easiest part time job out there. Everyday I thank God there are people who like working at 35th, cause you couldn't pay me enough to work down there.

Besides, all the good looking males on this job work the streets!

One more thing, I don't do married men.

>>You are a complete moron.<<
A great retort to my history lesson, huh young'un?

>>What is the difference between the FD being given wagons to transport the bodie or the us the wagons to transport the body? <<

Well, for starters, if you leave us with between 25 or more wagons, than I know one is more likely to be available for my mentals or mass transports. You cannot be the police if you don't know the use of wagons in, gee, like, uhm, police work?

>>If you are using the arguement that when the wagon transports a body they are done and not available for calls is that not the same as when the Fd would have to transport a body and then they are not available for calls? <<

The FD wagons could have their own crews and be dedicated exclusively to dedicating bodies, in rank order, citywide. I'm okay with having 20 firemen unavailable. Not ambulance crews. Firemen. Because at any time in the city of Chicago, there are far more than 200 firemen who aren't fighting fires. And if you needed these 20, you could still have them respond with the "Squad" manpower units.

>>"It would give some of the useless fat fucks something to do besides sit around a fire house and drink."
You are right because there are not people like that with the
PD.<<

Puhleeze, that was a gratuitous dig. Of course there are in Chicago. How about this... if you think this should be a PD job. How about the CPD take 20 of our useless fat fucks and put them on wagons, but make these wagons ONLY available for body transports.

My points being, A. this ain't a police job, and B. don't take my last wagon off the streets.

>> The department basically is handing out free money with the yearly fitness test yet less than 10% of the people sign up for it.<<

Not disagreeing here.

>>I think it is a riot trying to watch some of these people get in and out of cars and trying to fit into uniforms that they have had for only a year. <<

We ain't so far apart after all.

>>As for the Fd not doing anything, you must work in some nice slow place because if you ever worked in any of the shits wholes and actually did something on the street you would notice their trucks and ambulances on the street as much as ours. <<

Dude, there is not one FD non-ambulance unit anywhere in the city that responds to as many calls or needs to stay "down" as much as any beat car in 007 or 011. Not One.

Regardless, us or them, whatever. What I'm saying what's it to me... and don't take the last wagon in the area down for ANYTHING except for street emergencies. This has been a policy failure for decades, and it should be remedied by the ivory tower brass now that the wagons on the street do have a bit less to do.

Bottom line, last wagon in 007 and 008 should never be put down except for mentals or 10-1s. No domestics, no street disturbances, no nothing. And they should give wagons to responsible experienced people, and just ask them to keep any eye out for everyone else (i.e., and exempt them from almost all radio calls).

Just a thought.

Anyway, why do you think transporting bodies is a police function?

1/05/2006 08:50:00 PM

History professor...when did the FD ever transport bodies?

I never stated it was a police function I just do not go along with all the people saying the FD should be transporting the bodies. How is a FD function. I could be wrong but I do not know of any FD that transports bodies to morges.

I do not think it is a police function but why transfer it to the FD when I really do not think it is a FD function either. That is what is completely wrong with this department and other city departments in that I do not think that the ones who run them really think about the the effects of the actions they make and think more about how it makes them look in the short term and how it will affect them personally.

History professor here. They sometimes end up transporting dead bodies to hospitals for declarations, such as in the case where somebody dies en route. Don't they?

Don't know who transported bodies before wagons were used as ambulances (prior to EMS services being provided), but I have to wonder if it was the police way back then.

Anyway, I thought I was mostly countering a point that I thought you or someone else was making... that this should be done by the wagon guys. I say screw that except in homicide scenes where immediate removal can help improve a crowd mentality that is dangerous to the on-scene police.

But I don't want to tie up the wagon guys with a non-police function. I didn't say it before, but I'll second the FD guy's point above that I don't want our people being exposed to the disease risk and overall grossness of this stuff either.

If the FD doesn't want it (which I certainly do not blame them for), than give it to the county or private services. No matter. Anywhere but the police except where it serves a police function.

History professor here. They sometimes end up transporting dead bodies to hospitals for declarations, such as in the case where somebody dies en route. Don't they?

No, I really think that they then pull over to the side of the road drop the body off and then call 911 to have a wagon come and transport the body the remaineder of the way.

Of course they take people who die entroute or pass on scene in the ambulance while performing their duties to the Hospital but not the morgue.

If you want to keep arguing back and forth here keeping making statements like above. But do not try to call me a young'un and state you are trying to give me a history lesson when you do not have one.

The FD does not/has not unless you give me facts about it, transports bodies to the morgue.

Should it be a repsonsibilty of the ME's office, you bet your ass. This is pretty much the way it is across the county. Is it the police departments fault for taking this on some time way in the pass, yes. Should it be passed on to the FD, no. The department should does something and make the city force the morgue to transport bodies.

Should the union do something about this, hell yes. Will they ever, Hell no. All they will say is that you will get the step increase for the removal, of which I do not know if thay are the ones who secured that or if the department came up with that. There is absolutely no protection for PO's removing a recently passed body, let alone ones that have god knows what kind of crap runnning through them and have been there for days on end.

I drove my partner around for years. Just like a dead body... bad body odor, lifeless, never moved much and let body gas escape out as he "slept".

I want D3 pay please!

Sincerely,
Detective Neil Maas

Leo Holt is the best judge there was on a bench. Very fair and wasn't a guy who believe something just because a cop said so!

Get over it loser, any cop can put a guilty man in jail, a real cop can put an innocent man in jail!

But I guess you couldn't even put a guilty man in jail, you cry baby!

Historian Guy; You are right about our ambos taking a "black" [that is a code name of course] to the ER to have them pronounced and then leave them for the ME or CPD to determine if it is from a crime scene. Circumstances, Right? I have never heard of a FD boss denying a call for a truck company to use masks and help the PD guys with a 'stinker'. At least I never have. Isn't our fight against the 5th floor fink? Enough of the BS crap of fighting between us. Get together and get the unions together or we will lose in the long run.

the longest I have waited was 5 hours for the body snatchers, and this was after we relieved the 2nd watch who was already there a couple hours. I blame the no balls w.c. for not just making a decision to send the wagon after the first 3 hours, but he was scared to sign a slip for overtime because he might have to explain himself to a higher authority.
As for handling nasty bodies, If the department changes back I will refuse to do it until they provide me with the proper body suit, gas mask, gloves, etc...

A year ago, I would have told you to go fuck yourself, and leave them alone.....but that was before a fireman stuck it up my ass! It's really hard not to hate all of them, really hard! But I'm trying not to.

The Body Snatchers don't even wear proper wear to pick up bodies. A jumpsuit isn't proper! The fact is nobody wants to remove nasty bodies that have sat for some time... well, unless they are paid enough. Someone has to do it. Someone who isn't affected by time away from assisting others or live people who need help. (CPD or CFD) An outside co. or "extra" man-power would be good. Maybe off-duty guys working a day off for time and a half to rove around on a citywide zone waiting to move a dead guy.

I don't agree that we put bacteria, disease infested bodies inside a little bag, carry them down flights of stairs and then dump em in wagons. It probably should be Cook County related, especially if they want the 88 yr old dead guy for investigation.

Delay is caused because of the removal company screw up in Area 2.

Cops had two female deceased, at Trinity and Our Lady of Jackson Park. Mover & Co mis identified them, coroner mis-identiifed them and the funeral home AR Leak prepped the wrong body. Family appeared at services and it was their great grand ma patriarch. What a schock granny lost two hundred pounds and went from dark to olive complected. Off course the police got blamed, now the snatchers can only remove one body at a time, one trip at a time.

The classic occurred in 003 when the dicks called the first deputy after the deceased blocked a major transportation street & viaduct(hint/hint longest duct in city) for four hours, after being denied request for a wagon.

The 003rd District watch commander refused to okay a truck, the tribe appeared with their camera phones, and the late nite news ghoul patrol appeared. The W/C Upon learning of the arrival of the media ordered a TRUCK from the fighting 006th District. One problem, the wagon did not have a body bag, and no one had a key to the storage room in 006, and the 003rd District desk crew didnt have a key to thier storage area because some one from the desk had stolen some time due slips and paper clips. We didnt have any body bags.

Thankfully the movers appeared five hours after the request and told us the truth. They only have one van, and they had no gas because the company issued gas credit card (CLARK OIL) only works in suburban locations but was past due. They waited for a supervisor who gave them five dollars for gasoline.
This was Pre Katrina mind you.
We could not believe this was a real event we thought it was just a funny dream. BB Balls Mauer(greatet cop in the big show) insisted this was just a new company trying to work out the "Kinks." We asked BB Balls if E&R towing could take over the removal service, they steal every thing now at the auto pound why would the morgue be any different.

BB Balls stated that E&R Towing would steal the gold out of the mouths of the deceased, the batteries out of their pace makers and hearing aides, but he would suggest it to KING Faruke the PUKE Daley. (please get down and bow)
Perhaps money could be made for the democratic party.
SERIOUSLY:
Its all one thing. The Merit Spineless watch commanders are afraid to write a simple to/from justifying their actions.

Burnt out sgt. counting my days

The above post is correct about the homicide under the viaduct. The detectives at the scene realized a bad scene was about to unravel and asked supervisors for the squadrol. They were refused. After several hours dozens of the bereaved arrived at the corner and it was quite a sight was told by the guys at the scene.

The W/C told detectives he was not about to deviate from the G/O about body removal. It could have turned out even worse, we were lucky.

The removal company violated the contract by removing bodies from seperate locations with out dropping one off. That's how the mix up happened.

To all you female bashing assholes: I am f/2 cop in a ghetto district and I do plenty of work. Aside from showing up on all my jobs, doing all my paperwork, arresting the mutts and showing up in court, I have to take care of my children, my house, my man and put up with all your dumb ass bullshit. I have met more male than female dog ass coppers that want to do nothing but wag thier dicks and get into fights and then cry about how the city fucks them over regarding IODs. Most of the men I work with couldn't get a job anywhere else because they're uneducated and have a shit personality. So you keep grabbing your balls and talking about how women are useless while we keep passing you over for promotions. And to all the females reading this: stop fucking these assholes and find a real man with a better job!

Not that I have to prove anything to you Female bashers, but I spent everyday in court in the 80's (not that most of you would remember that we had overnight auto theft and gun court and whore court at 11th and State). Plus you could make an arrest before 0300 and go to misdemeanor court in the morning, after you got off and be the first case's called. Furthermore, I did not get to 26th to often because my arrest's stuck and the assholes would screw me out of a trial by pleading Guilty at their probable cause! When I got sick of going to court, I LET my male partners have the court. Furthermore, to alot of you spineless newbies, I would gladly put my first 15 years of activity up against your activity and I guarantee that I have more part 1's (I don't count dope) than you!!! Let the bashing continue, punks or should I say gumps.

Men are stupid. You guys are so stupid that you don't even know your stupid. I work in a busy district and make arrests and you know what? I give most of my court away to guys who are constantly broke because they got a wife and a few kids at home and only 1 income. I have a man who makes more money than I do. So I don't have to spend all my free time in court bitching about how poor I am. So, while you are sitting with the shitbags, I am sleeping late. Stupid.

Oh and let's not forget: when arguing with an intelligent female always refer back to the "stupid guy handbook" rule #2 which is always resort to calling the women names like whore and bitch. Geez you're stupid.

I can handle the bashing, but lets be realistic, I (who WORK a busy district, and always have) don't like the females (or the males for that matter) that have managed to take over headquarters, without having put in any real time. They know who they are and they know they are not respected by the real police. Just don't lump all of us together. As always there will be the haves and the have nots. Get over it!

As a women with almost 25 years on the job I have alot in common with the 9:30am poster. I spent my first years as a P.O. in court almost everyday. If I wasn't in Auto theft or gun court I was in misdemeanor court with an overnighter. The days I didn't have an arrest were far and few between. I also had more felony arrests than most of the guys on the watch and spent many hours at 26th St on trials and at the Grand Jury. Also plenty of time on preliminary hearings in the felony branches. I made Det off the list in 1990 and continued to make arrests and go to court. The new guys on the job don't seem to have a clue on how to do police work or anything besides mouth off and makes asses out of themselves. I have been a supervisor for over ten years now and I am constantly amazed by the idiocy of the people male and female who are being hired by this department in the past fifteen years. I have never worked at headquarters, never held a desk job, and certainly never been given anything due to clout, cleavage, or the ability to give a blow job although I wouldn't turn down a promotion if any of those things would get me one. I've been a ghetto copper and also worked in a few places where I needed to speak proper english. Unfortunately for my career advancement I speak my mind, and take care of the people on my watch. I'm not afraid to make a decision or piss off my bosses if I don't agree with them. For you guys that think there are no decent females on the job I'll even stand up for you even though you won't appreciate and will motherfuck me behind my back. So to all you female hating no balls assholes. GO FUCK YOURSELVES!
