FINALLY! A Good Idea
Unfortunately, it seems to be by the Cook County Sheriff's Department.
- Sheriff's office to hire 350; vets get 1st shot
- The Cook County sheriff's office begins taking applications today for 350 corrections officer jobs, but only veterans and reservists who have recently been released from active duty can apply.
You don't have to have served in the military to make a good cop. We know hundreds. But a certain percentage of military vets within the ranks contributes to a more professional department. We are supposed to be a "quasi-military" organization. There are rules, there is a uniform, there is a mission. With a whole bunch of vets coming out looking for jobs, perhaps the Department should be out there competing with the County? Communities all over the nation are fighting for qualified applicants for the law enforcement role.

Vets should always be able to go to the head of the line!
The truth about swiping in: The reason we all will begin swiping in is quite simple. It is not being used to dock persons who come in late or don't swipe in before the 15 minute time frame. After the fiasco with the Immigration March, the department needs to know exactly what manpower they have available. The only way to have this is by having personnel swipe in at the beginning of their tour.
In the same sense, it can be useful in case of a terrorist attack, i.e. if someone takes out HQ, they know how many persons were at work that day and who to search for in the rubble.
Yeah, like anyone would search for THEM!
The city has spent CONSIDERABLE time and money recruiting in disadvantaged areas to drum up police and fire applicants. The county at least shows appreciation for what the vets sacrifice, not that working at county is any different than being at war.
The other side of the swiping issue is those officers (especially the ones at HQ) who hold over and work well beyond their 8 hour tour - never expexting the compensation because they are "sucking up" to the bosses - will have to get paid the OT owed to them.
Gone then are the freebies unless officers swip out and go back to work >> if that's the case SHAME ON YOU!

thats what a.n.a's are for
is there a link to the G.O. ?
Great idea reaching out to Vets. Military experience would definately be a plus in any law enforcement.
We are salaried employee's and swiping in is only meant to restrict your Bosses descretion in allowing you to come in a little late. Swiping out and cameras are next. 16:00 start swipe out 00:30.
Out here in Virginia most of the POs look like they are still in the military. They are professional and you almost never hear of scandals like you do in Chicago.
That said (and as is often discussed on the NYPD rant), there is much less in the way of professional courtesy our here. I argue that its because the whole freakin state is miltary, law enforcement, intelligence etc... and they'd never give anybody a ticket if they had such a thing. Others disagree though.
All in all, its much for the better. And I'd note that minorities and the poor are definitely overrepresented in today's military, so the idea is a way to kill two birds with one stone. All in all an excellent idea.
FYI: DN 98-19 DEPT NOICE 98-19 GIVES THE RUN DOWN ON SWIPING.TYPE IN D98-19 IN AUTOMATED DIRECTIVES ON THE CPD COMPUTORS.
STAY SAFE.
OOPS SHOULD READ "NOTICE" I'M SORRY WENT CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOL,PAGE 5 OF THE NOTICE TELLS YOU WHEN AND WHERE TO SWIPE AND HOW IT WORKS.
Hey 5:34 & 6:15. Keep justifying your existence to us. WORK WELL BEYONG THE 8 HOUR TOUR?? Are you kidding me???
What a tool!!!!!!
Having more vets on the job (whether it is Cook County or CPD) is an appealing idea. However, how long before the first lawsuit is filed by some openly gay man who "wanted to join the military" but was not allowed because of his "homosexual open-ness" (and not going along with the policy of don't ask, don't tell)? Seems like a case the ACLU would die for.
SCC thak you for putting up the "Registered User" obstacle. It appears it scared away the idiots that had invaded the blog.
I'm in my 20th year on this job with no military experience, but I agree 100%...Military service should account for something!! These guys gave several years of their lives to serve OUR country. They should get preferential treatment!! STAY SAFE!!
Sorry to break the thread, but WTF why is my co pay for ER visits which were 0.00 now going to $100.00??? Hello FOP!
William "The Gold-ing", What is your view on the Chicago Police, and what do you feel is the most satisfying thing about us?
Also, from your experiances what do you view as the single most negative experiance(s)?
I'm just asking. You are new, and you do make some logical statement's, though they usaully don't flow with most of the opinion's here (The statement of being a gay Jew, it really had no place or reason to state that).
Back on Track........
YES the Vets deserve every break they can get.
They did it the 'old-fashioned' way...They EARNED IT!
God Bless our military!!!
100 dollar co-pay wait, the fuckin just started. But you idiots cant stay together. We are going to get fucked so bad. Just wait and see.
William Golding is really Shady O'Grady, he's using another bullshit post name.
would someone please tell me why all of a sudden we have to swipe in?
any insight woud be appreciated.
now that we are swiping in it's just a matter of time before we start swiping out.
William Golding wrote the book "Lord of the Flies" and a number of others that dealt with societal breakdown. Shady O'Grady is obviously attempting to make some sort of statement regarding the Bush Administration. Hey Shady? If you were a character in Golding's book, would you be Piggy?
I am a fan of veterans as much as the next guy, but I believe that the city and county give preferences to veterans in order to increase minority representation on these jobs.
Urban minorities are under represented in the military compared to their numbers. Take your paranoia some place else.
Whoever thinks I know jack about Lord of the Flies is quite deluded... and seems to be having real trouble "quitting me"! I smell a filthy rich BOZO (evil klown par excellance) but who knows... but they are OBVIOUSLY the knave posting and prevaricating with the literary tripe... drop a dime if you know who the kook is!
Like I'd need to jump through that many hoops to shout "BUSH SUCKS"! (and he's going DOWN!)
- ydahS ;-)`
(NOT Lefty, NOT Malcolm X Lil' Bro', NOT Willem Goldmember, but sure, yes, oui, many of those other sock merrionettes... hardly at all for quite a while now... I was doing SO good, but some dummy just HAS to keep dropping me monicker... sigh... tsk tsk tsk...)
It is about thime that the veterans of this great natrion are giving preferential treatment when it comes to hiring them as Policeman or Fireman at what ever govt level. As someone stated earlier, we are a semimilitary organization. Vets know how to march, follow orders and think on their feet. Not like these "Xbox" kids coming on the job today that have to question everything and think that going to a shots fired call is not in their job description.Just go to the academy and look at some of the "POLICE" the city is hiring! Sorry this is so long everyone. God bless and stay safe out there!
To SCC, THANKS! Keep up the GREAT work guy(s)! And to you anti-gun or anti- concealed carry people, remember without the 2nd Ammendment to protect it, there would be no 1st Ammendmenmt!
Hey Irish Democratic voters, I agree that we should give service points to wartime veterans, however, you're elected representatives at all levels of Illinois government have passed legislation that bars discrimination based upon military status. Translated this means that military status cannot be factored in to advance one person over another based upon this status. Keep voting for you're own and be careful when you sit down!!!
