The Media as the Enemy
It was suggested in some of our comments sections that as the Sun Times has suddenly made it it's policy to name officers involved in shootings, that all courtesies extended to the media should be revoked.
That sounds like a great idea. They're speeding to the scene of some breaking story, ticket them. They park in a bus stop so they don't have to walk so far, hammer them. They get stupid at a crime scene and don't listen, arrest them. We'd say give the guys dropping off papers in the boxes a break, but why? If the media can use innuendo and half assed reporting to smear the entire department, shouldn't the guys at the bottom of the delivery chain suffer the same fate as Frank Main and his ilk? They're part and parcel of the same organization. Tell them it's all Frank's fault.

I agree, but with one caveat. I used zabasearch to look up Frank Main and saw two or three different ones out in the burbs with that name. But we already know his name. The info also included addresses and phone numbers.
I didn't post the info in your comments, but somebody else did. If it became public that this site and the (maybe coppers?) posters were posting addresses and phone numbers as some sort of vendetta, than the public and political backlash could get ugly.
So, one the one hand I agree about not giving special treatment to the media under any circumstances. On the other, posting someone's (maybe) address and phone number doesn't seem like a really good idea. Of course, anyone interested can find the list of potential matches at zabasearch or one of the other similar sites. I'd just encourage my fellow posters and readers not to go so far as to post any potential match here.

I disagree about hurting the poor working slob, the truckdriver. He has about as much control over how and what gets printed as the kid on his bike delivering the paper to your house.

Naming the copper without criminal charges against HIM is bullshit. They know better.
Who gave the reporter the officer's name. I am pretty sure it wasn't our department spokesperson, they know better.
If it could be shown that some copper involved gave out the officer's name, that should be worth a suspension, or at least an ass chewing.

Whatever my 2cents is worth, I wouldn't want to pick on the working slob delivering papers at 4am. They're just blue collar workers, not any different than myself. We don't like when the world comes down on us because of the nonsense and lies our bosses create that seems to trickle down to us shafting the common citizen when we have no control over it. Put the blame where it lies, with the reporter.
I just got overtime for locking up my paperboy off duty. He threw the paper too hard and dented my front storm door. This little 12 year old is a key to the whole organization! And I made a few hundred in overtime too! And wait till he comes to collect the money. If he overcharges me again by 50 cents... Its a theft arrest for him! I'll show those newspapers who is boss!

Just wanted to say thank you to the copper from 013, star#18983, for giving my car with an fop, st. jude and cpd memorial sticker a $50 ticket last night. Whatever happened to cutting some slack for one of our own? I admit I was in the wrong but how about some professional courtesy.

Invaribably the most useless, stupid, wastes of oxygen you'll ever see. Enough to make you flee Chicago in fear of your life. I might be painting everyone with too broad a brush as there are a few workers, young and old, still pushing around beat cars at Wood St. Absent compelling circumstances, and there are very few, I would extend the courtesy to a car with an FOP sticker. But sometimes you have to get your lazy ass out of the squad car to see it.
While I agree that Camden is the best in a long time, if not ever, I always laugh when a PO says "you need the police to do this". Crimefile has basically the same statement about police communications in his latest rant.
What a joke. 60% of the police officers in this city can't be found at any given time while on the clock. They have some special skills? 70% of the uniforms pushing a beat car would be working at 7-11 if not for a phone call. They have some special skills?
Look around pal. There are about 5 or 10 people in the entire police department who have ANY business getting in front of a camera and speaking. Thankfully, Camden is one of them, though I don't necessarily like his style of first-person presentation.
Its been said a thousand times, and I'll say it once more. "Police work" in Chicago is done by a very small percentage on a 24/7/365 basis. And most who once wanted to do the work give up on it all after a few years when they realize how corrupt and impossible the situation is.

In fact, the news stories about CPD that other cities/Countries see ( the cameras, the lowered Homicide rates, CAPS, technology ) are quite flattering. I have the highest respect for the individuals who have had the courage to sign the petition.
There are many families and collegues of our many fallen and disabled officers who are now having to suffer their loss all over again, thanks to our city. It has been very tough for people such as the Gilhooly and Rappaport family to come out and have the strength to sign this petition. The city is slapping them in their faces. No respect. Nothing.
Disabled police officers such as CPD Terrance Knox who is partially paralyzed after being shot 3 times. He has been fighting to have his day in court as long as I've been around. And after everything he has been through, I must say, quite the stellar attitude considering every day is a reminder of 1969.

I might be painting everyone with too broad a brush as there are a few workers, young and old, still pushing around beat cars at Wood St. Absent compelling circumstances, and there are very few, I would extend the courtesy to a car with an FOP sticker. But sometimes you have to get your lazy ass out of the squad car to see it.

An excellent point brought up at 08:39...of all of the officers on the CPD, how many are actually "working" (in the true sense of the word). On another point, how many good and qualified PO's and dicks don't bother to apply for Sgt., Sgts' for Lt., etc. (leaving us with the bosses we have); how many good and decent people don't bother to run for political office (leaving us with the pols we do have). It's a sad state of affairs, I think....

I understand your concerns. This was an editorial decision made late Friday. The discussion was that we have routinely named civilians who have shot and killed attackers in self-defense and the same should apply to police officers. The department does not normally give out the names of officers in police-involved shootings and did not officially in this one either. Sources, however, confirmed the name. I told my editors the name and they decided we should run the name. It's not so much a practice by the media not to name the officers: it is simply that the media normally are not provided with the name of the officers and have grown accustomed to not asking. In any event, I have taken your concerns into account, as well as the other officers I have heard from on this. I'll have a discussion with my editors Monday so we can come up with a policy, instead of doing this case-by-case. I am not unsympathetic to your concerns. But I understand my editors' point that the officer, though off-duty, was involved in a public action by the nature of his being a sworn officer and evidenced by the police roundtable he went through after the shooting. I'm leaning toward not naming such officers in the future, but I have to talk it out with my bosses.
