The article says that firemen make $44,838 a year. 3x that (the traditional amount you are suppposed to pay for housing) is $134,514. You can't even get a crappy condo conversion in the ghetto of Rogers Park for that little!

If I had less than 5 years on this job, and/or I was not married, I'd definitely take the fire test! As it is now, I couldn't afford the financial hit until I got back up to my curent step 7 salary.
I'm really very surprised that the numbers for this test weren't doubled.

I'll tell you who I hope takes the Fire test and thats the Sgt. that works 2510 on days. He would do well as a fireman. We never see or hear from him.The other day one of the guys was calling for help and a Taser. You think he would show up? Not on your life. This guy is incredible. I've never seen anybody disappear like he does. If I layed down like he does, man, would I be in trouble. I'm new to the watch so when I first got here and noticed that he was never around particularly when we need him, I thought something had happened to him so I was going to do a Missing Persons report and list him as a habitual missing but somebody else said that I'd better not so I didn't.
Yea, I hope he takes the Fire test. He would be real good just hangin around like they do at the Fire house. At least that way if I wanted to see my Sgt. I'd know where to find him. I could go to the firehouse and see him once a day which is more than I see him now.

With George Ryan's 12 million dollar defense, isn't it reasonable to believe that his jury consultant ran every perspective jury and accepted those with a tainted past so as to have an emergency escape hatch if the verdict did not go his way.

There are more important things to worry about then who does what.
Both are good jobs, both have good people and both have jags.
My experience is that CFD helped me when I was injured at work, both the engine crew and ambulance crew moved their asses to help me.
Six firefighters and paramedics carried me out. So when you're laying on your back, not knowing where the F*** you are, and the CFD arrives, are you goning to ask them if they were watching tv brfore you let them help you? I think not.
Thanks to the engine and ambulance crews at the house at California / Roosevelt.
it's probably a couple of the guys we both sit across from when negotiating our contracts attempting to divide us for a future concur......higher co-pays, two teir pay or some such nonsense.

CFD don't listen to the b/s. 99% of this department has nothing but honor and respect for you all.
You have to remember that the patrol division (That's those of us you see on a daily basis)deals with victims who on the most part are assholes, and have yearly contact with the police. The other's are arrestee's who can really ruin a good day.
When you live in this situation you become very quick to be defensive, and then insulting.

Let me tell you something about fire fighters. I am a Police
officer (CPD) and have nothing but respect for our (CFD) brothers. Several years ago my 3 year old daughter stopped breathing and turned blue. I was not home and was tied up a 26th St. My wife home alone could not get the baby to respond to CPR. The F/F on Eng. 97 arrived and saved her life.
You F/F are the best, call for an assist, I WILL BE THERE!!!

One night in the hospital I was talking with a paramedic that I always see on jobs. Somehow the subject came up about "Person down, CFD not responding" The look I got from him was total disbelief and then he tells his partner what I said, he too was surprised. This is the time I find out that most request from CFD for assist comes not from the F/F or Paramedics but form dispatch. I cant speak for everyone but when I hear fire 10-1 I treat it like its a police 10-1. Also when my son was 2 he swollowed something that lodged in his throat and he had trouble breathing, I was panicing but it was dislodged by our paramedics. I have no desire to run into burning buildings and Im sure most firefighters/paramedics have no desire to deal with shithead domestics. Lets stop shitting on each other and show some respect.

I was fire Paramedic in the late Seventies. The Firefighters Treated us like shit because we took their PRECIOUS "CADILLAC aMBULANCE JOBS AWAY. wORKED EVERY shithole area in the city. Leave the FireHouse at 8:00AM don't get back till 10:00 Pm.Fireman Rested up for their Scab Union Jobs. Police job not perfect but Paramedic job Absolutely the toughest.
Relax everyone. We are all on the same team, CPD and CFD. This childish banter is really not necessary. I have nothing but respect for the CFD and give them the same courtesy that I give to PO's. We all should do the same.

I can't believe the anger being written here between CPD and CFD. We are all on the same side guys. How about a little respect for both sides?
I have gone into several Fire houses while working (never to mooch dinner)and have always been treated with respect. And yes, every time I walked in I was offered THEIR food.
The bickering is ridiculous on both sides. They sometimes need help from us, and we from them.
If an individual acts like an ass than treat em like an ass, but don't paint a whole emergency services profession with a broad negative brush.
And THE LAST person who ANYBODY should be disrespecting is a paramedic. I know they get grief and mistreated by some firemen, and I'd gladly lift all courtesy privileges from such firmen were it up to me. But nobody 'cept the busiest districts on 3rd watch have anything like the hectic lives that paramedics do.
For the comment above about the OEMC FD dispatchers, I can tell you this. The reason those guys would be surprised is because its incomprehensible that any jobs aren't going to them. They run 24/7 pretty much, and wouldn't believe that another 20 or 25% of calls are being passed off to the police for evaluation. If I were that busy I'd find it hard to believe that anybody was holding back even more work from me.
To put it in perspective, in the late '90s da mare called for an ambulance with breathing problems. They sent the closest one. From somewhere out by Midway airport. A week or two later the city orders BLS ambulances because it suddenly dawned on the geniuses that maybe the ALS ambulances were overworked. They never got that idea from the lawsuits they settled or the complaints from citizens. Nope, it took the little midget running short of breath before they realized, ooh, ooh, maybe dere's a problem!
And the problem ain't so much that there ain't enough ambulances. The problem is that the city sends its ambulances on all kinds of complete bullshit.
Tell me if that don't sound familiar! Anyone recognize a job where the city sends emergency resources on all kinds of complete bullshit? Anyone? Anyone?
