New Radios? Again?

Don't get us wrong, new digital radios would definitely be a step up from the current models (which we think were a step backwards from the 24 channel Sabres). The current radios have batteries that don't hold a charge the length of a tour and are useless inside a simple cinderblock building, leaving you to try to find a window to broadcast out of. Lord help us in the event of a disaster. And communicating with the Fire Department directly might be a good thing at large scenes or getting ETAs on an ambulance (though we see them restricting this to supervisor radios only).

But wouldn't it have made sense for the City to ... oh wait, there's those words again ... "made sense" and "the City." Ah, the joys of low bid contracting. Don't you taxpayers worry about all the money we spend on stuff that is outdated and low powered before we even get it in the field. Just keep paying those taxes.

Captain Morgan says, The police dept. has had the digital frequencies in use for over ten years already.

Every radio zone and city-wide frequency has already been assigned a digital frequency (20 channels, and more on reserve). Every time you key up your radio you are transmitting on several frequencies (the old and the new) at the same time. The FCC gave the city the new channels a long time ago, but the city did not want to spend the money for new radios at that time.

Many districts already have the newer 48 channel radios (three banks of 16 channels each with an a.b.c. switch = 48).

Every district could have there own channel plus lots of extra channels for city-wide, tact, cta, tru, fire, traffic aids-forget them, but it will cost some extra dough to do all this.

And the Mayor wants to see how they do it in Jordan and around the world before he commits to public safety here.

How do I know all this?

A little man at the radio shop at A-1 gave me a guided tour one day while I went there to drop off some PDT'S for repair. He even told me about the tracking devices they can use to find you when they want to. If you buy him a coffee and bring him a sandwich, the place is yours. They have tons of stuff that you would not know about. Even all the stuff IAD uses.

They even had a mic that broadcast all the time without you pushing the button. Be careful what you say to your partner or on your cell phone.

Ooopppsss, that guy will get fired now! Sorry A-1 Radio Shack.

I thought we were still not up to band frequency and this was part of the problem with expanding. Did the fiber optic fiasco play into this?

Sounds like the only thing the dept. may be good at is spying.

"Now aint that special".

The old radios were more of an offensive weapon than the baton ever was, though nothing can replace a four cell Kel-Light.
Keep in mind, now that the Department believes it has mastered radio communications in-house and it wants to utilize the geek firm of Lewin and Huberman's approach at command and control (a technology-based technique completely uncontaminated by any police knowledge whatsoever.)
I heard the new radios can tell how many sheets of paper you use in the john...

the point is not to provide the best possible equipment to the city emergency responders. the point is to enrich your family, friends and supporters with fat city contracts.
not understanding that is why you are police and not polititions.

We have the new Panasonic Toughbook PDT's in 025. They are pretty nice, you will like them. They live up to their name also. I climbed up to the top of the radio antenna behind 025 with my Toughbook PDT and dropped it to see if it would work. It bounced about halfway backup a couple of times after hitting the ground but it still works. Like the ad says, it took a lickin and kept on tickin.

the city needs a redundant low tech system utelizing the most rugged radios on the market.
this system should allow district stations to act as dispatch centers for themselves in case of emergency.
i don't think the city plans for a worst case cenario. they look to the G to save them in that case.

The first time that new and improved PDT that you can create a case report on is used to bash the head of a offender who returns to the scene will be the end of PDT's completely. I suggest a ATM like report generator on ever corner next to the block club signs. You just walk up and state the horrendous crime committed against you. Here is an example of how the Chicago Police Department Automated Report Machine will work:

CPD A.R.M. : Hello how can I assist you?

Victim: HUH?

CPD A.R.M. : Hello how can I assist you?

Victim: Huuh?

CPD A.R.M. : Hello how can I assist you?

Victim: Huuh?

CPD A.R.M. ? Hello how can I assist you?

Victim: who me?

CPD A.R.M? Yes you. What type of report would you like?

Victim: Huh?

We will have the absolute highest technology that is available to anyone for any price in 2006.

Trouble is, we won't have it until sometime in 2012.
