Target, Wal-Mart Play Hardball
Either someone at Target and Wal-Mart (A) read this board or (B) they just have intelligent people running their stores. We'd like to imagine it was (A) and our plan to take over the world is proceeding nicely, but in reality it's probably (B). From the Sun Times:
- Target is putting plans to build three South Side stores "on hold" -- and making veiled threats to close existing Chicago stores -- if the City Council mandates wage and benefit standards for "big-box" retailers, African-American aldermen warned Thursday.
- Minneapolis-based Target becomes the second retailing giant to threaten to pull out of the lucrative Chicago market in a last-ditch effort to stop an ordinance championed by organized labor that breezed through the City Council's Finance Committee 15-6 and has attracted support from 33 aldermen.
Bravo to Target and Wal-Mart and every other "Big Box" retailer. Hopefully they'll stick to their guns and break the City Council of their woeful concept of economic development. The faster these goofs lose the City jobs, the faster people will realize that voting for the same old song and dance of the democratic party handouts costs EVERYONE money.

Leave it to our city administration to scare business away. Now more than ever we need businesses here in the city, not condos.
The duplicity of the city council is more than apparent in this situation. They want the appearance of backing organized labor by making the "big box" living wage ordinance a reality. Then on the other hand they also tell illegal aliens working here in the city that they won't enforce any of the immigration laws.
Illegal aliens have done more to hurt organized labor than big business could imagine. Illegals undercut every union job by doing it cheaper and with a more readily available labor pool. From a business perspective, cheaper is always better. Want proof? Go to any of these condo conversions occurring in the city and ask the contractor if the laborers are covered under a union contract. More square footage of construction is done by non-union workers than you'd imagine. A majority of these non-union workers are illegals that are Irish, Polish, and Hispanic.
Organized labor in this city is not what it used to be. They have been bought off by the city and are subject to the same dishonest contract negotiations offered by the city as we have been. Want proof? Ask yourself when was the last time a labor strike shut down a city service?
I offer this solution to resolve the impasse between the city, Wal-Mart, and Target. The big-box stores should offer to hire nothing but illegal aliens in their city stores. After-all, it's the most expedient solution to these stores history of low wages and non-existent healthcare. The Alderman in turn get to look good to every illegal walking the street and are assured a re-election at the hands of their constituants.
Boeing Corp. is headquartes here. Jobs for well qualified. Ass afro-amer. alderfucks say we want our own to earn 45.00/hr. with health benefits. Not long ago I was guarding a breakfast meeting which the mayor attended. The "community leaders" there lined up to kiss Richie's ass and pour praises on all he had done. I almost choked. The mayor spoke about closing the large inter-modal container terminal that is on Western Ave. north of Cermak and turning it over to developers. He said, "There are only fifteen jobs there." Fifteen jobs! Maybe in the office, what about all the truck drivers, crane operators, rail workers and all the commerce that this place supports.
Send all those jobs out to the suburbs and put up more condos; and put all those trucks on our streets.
I don't mind going to the suburbs for "my" Target, right across the border! A nice walk at that..........
If I shop in Chicago, I will pay 9%, the highest sales tax in the nation.
If I go to the most western suburbs, Melrose Park for example, and the sales tax is 7.75 on most items. The sales tax on food in most western suburbs is only 2%.
Nice big parking lots and cheaper gas too.
The more I read about the ordeals and everyday struggles that regular folks have to endure living and working in Chicago, the more it reminds me of some third world dung heap (Picture Haiti or Rwanda with frigid winters). I must ask the obvious question-why do you stay?

Retiring and moving out of the city, maintain a city voting address so you can vote against Richie. It should be law that if you collect a city pension, you can vote for the mayor of that city no matter where you live because the mayor appoints members of the pension board. Your understanding of basic economics is faulty. The more people that have jobs the higher inflation will go. Along the same path is a higher minimun wage. That will lead to higher inflation.
Real Inflation is the enemy of rich people. It is their concern to minimize that in the utmost. Hence, the resistance to paying "living wages".
If you look above the earlier post has a Wal-mart employee earning $9.68/hr. For eight hours aday that is $77.44. 5 x a week = $387.20. x 52 wk/yr = 20,134.40.
per the 2006 HHS Poverty Guideline, for a family of 4 the official poverty line is $20,000, so, shit, atleast Wal-mart has their people $134 OVER the poverty line, right??
