Bail Set

Channel 2, Channel 5, Channel 7 and the Tribune have follow up to yesterday's announcements of the arrests of four Special Operations officers. Bail was set from $1.5 million all the way up to $3 million. The most disturbing about the entire proceeding was this little tidbit:
  • "The defendants, along with other as of yet uncharged officers, abused their authority and sworn police powers to terrorize and steal from the people of this city," he said.
"...as of yet uncharged officers..." could mean a couple of things. It could be a power play by the State's Attorney to get one or more people to crack. It could be that a whole bunch more people are going to get caught up in this.

In any case, it's looking ugly.

How about the Cook County State Attorney's Office and the Cook County Circuit Court produce all bonds set in the last month. The charge and bond! I wonder how many violent crimes were set at the bonds of these Chicago Police Officers who very well may only be guilty of Official Misconduct (what the public would consider Official Misconduct.) There are going to be alot of heavy hearts if these officers were only do their jobs in that gray area that many of us do. You know bosses, the conduct all of you have condoned, including you, Superintendent. Can we please be deployed to do your political dirty work. Let's talk about mutual comabatancy, do you think the State would be interested in that? Maybe the FEDS would. Gangs/Guns/and Drugs. Isn't that our motto? I'll bet many police officers would be very surprised what the State Attorney's office is going to consider Home Invasion, with a handgun, is now armed violence. Every search warrant executed immediately generates a money beef. If the search is conducted with the resident present and unable to leave, that very well may be kidnapping. Go out there and kick ass and take names boys, stand on the stage and get the award from the Superintendent and the Mayor, but save your money for the attorney in election year!

Wow! She really is a strange one - huh!? The one thing that bothers me about her article is that she assumes that it's all police officers who write on this blog. While many are, there are still quite a few others who are not. There are spouses, retirees, friends and family members. So she can't take from this blog the idea that it is all racist police officers. Rememeber, there are not too many here that post under a dedicated ID where we know that they're police officers.

Oh that's right...we don't do ride-alongs anymore. But honestly, with the way she thinks, it wouldn't make a bit of a difference.

Anyone watching saw that every single one of his guns were collectors guns and not the ones used by the thugs on the streets. I bet these same coppers never made a gun pinch from a street stop.

That firefighter is a pretty decent guy. From what I've heard, he states he is a collector and also tuned guns for coppers. FYI: If you gave your weapon to a northsider fireman, you might want to see when you will get it back. He had 65 or so weapons, but only a few automatics, so he should get most of it back. Gun team was out to collect numbers, nothing more. Most were hunting shotguns or sidearms, many antique WWI and WWII issue.

The bunch from 015th or 007th appear not to get the same benefit of a doubt....upon public disclosure they appear immediately guilty, tried in the public forum, and by their supposed peers ......all before the verdict was in. What makes this group the exception?
When was the last time any OFFICERS of the CPD have been accused of any type of crimes so publicly and been exonerated? There appears to be alot of people that knew these guys and knew of them...The shoe has dropped and these guys have appear to have been caught with their hands in the cookie jar. I do have sympathy for their children and families, but in the long run these guys and their antic provided for themselves and their love ones by ill gotten gains. I can not and will not subscribed to any benefits or fund raisers in their behalf. They made a decision not once but what appears several times for self enrichment, probably there are others who have fallen under the radar and are sweating it out. What they (the accused) have done is to belittle themseves and each and ever member of the CPD, present and past..Feeling sorry for them is a waste of time and energy.

I don't know the facts behind the case, I wasn't there, and if even one of these guns was headed to the streets , then I applaud them. On the other hand, if this was a straight up gun collecter, then I say spend some more time in your own area getting the thousands of guns off the street that are in the gang bangers hands. Thanks for your time.

Dear SCC, it has been a fun ride but I think it is now time to end this blog. On Fox32 news the reporter stated that an unnamed source has implicated the four officers in a murder. I think this reporter's unnamed source was some idiot on this blog. (I remember seeing an anonymous post like that a while ago.) This site was good when it was coppers beefing about the job, but now reporters and others (IAD, Bosses, Defense Attys, et al...) are using rumors from this site as a legitimate information source. I know that you are going to say that it is their problem and that they could get in trouble for using rumors as fact. Unfortunately, it is time to end it. This is my last post. I hope you heed this request. The idiots (CPD and non-CPD) have made all of us hardworking coppers look bad long enough. Even with your diligent moderation this site is now hurting us.

Bullshit!!! It means they have to sit in COOK COUNTY JAIL for at least the weekend!!! Think about that! Imagine yourself in County for a few hours, much less a few days. Maybe with guys they put in there recently.

I've worked with two of these guys several years ago. Socially, I think they are great guys. But I have no problem believing they are guilty based on my own experience with them. Devine is defintiely piling on the charges, but let's not kid ourselves here; these guys brought in huge numbers by any means necessary and often bragged about having "a little left over to have lunch with". The gray area is one thing, straight out home invasions are another, and that is what SOS (and the number counting bosses) relied on.

If you can't figure out a way to do your job without violating the law, don't you dare whine when you get a spanking. Do it right and you never have to worry about this kind of shit. J.F. used to brag about how he beat almost all of his beefs, just like I see some of you doing here. I hope and pray that one day you don't end up where he is sleeping tonight.

The CCSA jumped at it and who can blame them. We know there are a lot more scandals to come as well. What do you expect when you let shit heads, I mean democrats run something. You can't blame the white shirts, they not part of the problem, they are the fucking problem.

Lets be sensible here. There are plenty of guys on here who have decided these guys got what they deserve. There are also plenty on here who defend what they have done or implicated to have done as grey area and some who outright believe they are innocent. There are guys on here who use this incident to bash 2 year wonders,FOP and clout babies.(that would be their targets no matter the incident) There are guys that will use this incident to advocate being a "dog".
The winds of charge are a blowing. However, I seriously doubt that appropriate changes will be made.
If you have ever had the pleasure of attending a DOC meeting you will know what I'm talking about.
Commander from Dist A stands up and gives a rundown of activity from his troops. " 325 arrest, 55 citations from 3 seatbelt enforcements, 250 contact cards 42 dispersals and on and on and on.....what the the commander doesnt say is 300 of those arrested were crimes ranging from solicitation, drinking on the public way and trespass. Whats my point? The mindset of quanity over quality is rampant in this department. I would love to hear a commander one day stand up and say "I dont have shit, 75% of the time my manpower is so low I'am only able to man beat cars and 90% of the time we are in a backlog. I dont have the bodies nor the time to gather meaningless stats." The man wouldnt be a commander very long but boy would he be a hero.
Nope a commander isnt going to do that. He is going to require his watch commanders to have 3 outdoor roll calls a week along with endless seatbelt enforcement missions. He will pressure his watch commanders to limit time due so that he can produce these meaningless numbers. He doesnt care how they are obtained as long as he has them. He will require his tact Lt. to produce numbers "edge missions" thus DOPW, Sol. UnLawfull Bus. and Trespassers. I dont blame the tact guys, I dont blame the Sgt.s nor the Lt.s.....I blame the exempts!
Remember boys it QUANITY OVER QUALITY!!!!
Does this excuse officers for being criminal? Absolutely not but it reeks of upper management turning a blind eye for the almighty numbers game. And now with all the hand wringing that will be going on they will come up with solutions and quick fixes...i.e. inspectors and other accountability measures. Sad thing is they will never be able to come to the conclusion that maybe they are the problem and they need to change their management styles.

And if that's the case, then I'm glad those guns are off the street, especially those full auto machineguns. Lots of sickies out there with respectable jobs, doing some unrespectable shit out there. From Tribune...

Finnigan and his wife "do not have a single checking account with any financial institution. All normal household expenses, including two home mortgages, two car payments and utilities, are paid with cash, money orders or cashier's checks," Knibbs said at the hearing.

Over about three years, Herrera deposited $95,000 into his bank accounts that had not been declared as income, Knibbs said. During the same period, Suchocki allegedly deposited $77,000.

No checking account? Everything paid in cash. No need for a benefit because it looks like they have enough money for the lawyers.

This copper must be lying too.

In December 2002, Finnigan and other officers allegedly forced their way into the home of an off-duty officer who woke up to find the men ransacking his home. The officers left when the off-duty cop's daughter showed Finnigan his badge, Knibbs said.

Face it they are sooo done.

"Crying won't help you. Praying will do you no good."

PLEASE help me with this thought. If the crime was such a reign of terror and the rumors of these SOS officers being investigated for 4 years is true. What ever happened to the departments integrity checks. Seems to me that the department did all it could to exhonerate these officers including providing them with medals even with large clouds of suspicion were circulating. The department got boxed into a corner then had to REACT. If these guys were as bold as discussed in the media why didnt the higher-ups set up several inegrity check long ago to minimize the damage to everyone, the CPD, the coppers involved, the good and bad guys. This hole situation stinks from the VERY top to the bottom.

This is a wake up call for the stupid. The department tells you (especially guys in units such as SOS) to go out and get the guns and drugs of the street. Do what you gotta do...wink,wink. But when push comes to shove and its you or them, you are going be hung out to dry.Like a bad spy movie, they are going to deny any knowledge of your "secret mission". All those guys had chests full of medals. That and $.50 will get them a phone call to their lawyer. You take the risks and the exempts go to the DOC meeting and the press and reap the rewards. Don't be a dog, do your job to the fullest extent of the law and back up other officers, thats more than enough.

Don't give me that shit about there innocent until proven guilty either. As far as I'm concerned there guilty , guilty , guilty. Anyone that buys a ticket for there benefit is NUTS !

HEY, WHY DO YOU ALL SPOUT OUT WHAT THE PAPER SAYS AND REGARD IT AS THE TRUTH, BUT THEN WHEN IT'S ABOUT YOU, YOU SAY-OH, YOU KNOW THE MEDIA, DON'T BELEIVE WHAT YOU READ IN THE PAPERS OR SEE ON TV. SOUNDS LIKE A DOUBLE STANDARD TO ME. NEXT, IT'S NICE THAT THE STATE GOT TO PRESENT THEIR SIDE OF IT AT BOND COURT, HOWEVER WERE ANY OF THE OFFICERS ALLOWED ONE WORD TO EVEN TRY TO EXPLAIN? AGAIN, I DO NOT CONDONE STEALING, BUT IT'S BEEN VERY ONE SIDED-LET THEM HAVE THEIR DAY TO SPEAK, THEN JUDGE. UNTIL THEN KEEP YOUR MEDIA FILLED MOUTHS SHUT!!!!

The majority of the po's in SOS are complete jagoffs!!! They need to check their egos and watch their backs. These assholes are bringing major heat on everyone. I agree, who knows what really happened, but it's not like this was one case. This was a pattern of events, not looking too good. F*ck SOS

9/09/2006 02:33:18 AM

Above is yet another reason I refrain from posting.

What are you afraid of exactly?

Get a grip on reality, what you have so far is a MEDIA Frenzy of portrayals of the officer's and allegations! Was there a full trial and a lot of us missed it, NO as this story just opened up. Since when did we become Judge and Jury isn't that an arena were to stay out of? Your post is like so many other gossip posts on this site. Stir the pot start the action and try and call out other's, pathetic! Got news for ya. If your actually police you should already be able to handle the heat, so your either a player, a newbie or a dog in dress playing cop.

Again I ask, what are you afraid of? If your police and you like your check then DO your job and stop huddling in your secret corner whispering gossip sessions, now get back to work!

You my friend are soft!

Most of what's in the media right now and being posted on this thread is detailed from the ASA's case presented at bond court; pretty much fact about their allegations. They have a ton of evidence.

"HOWEVER WERE ANY OF THE OFFICERS ALLOWED ONE WORD TO EVEN TRY TO EXPLAIN?" Do you know anything about our system; remember the right to remain silent thing? They need to keep their mouths shut. If they were really innocent, they would have gone to county kicking and screaming; they know what they did.

I love to come to this blog once in awhile to remind me that our job is riddled with softballs and retards. Thankfully they are not the majority; yet!

Dear 0909 2006 1:45:27

The legal answer to your question is-it depends.
In the event that he is a naturalized citizen it is unlikely that he can be "removed" (no such thing as deported anymore). The only occasions that come readily to mind are those in which the individual was not qualified, morally, to be naturalized in the first place. An example of this would be a person that obtained an immigrant visa and had committed crimes, or was otherwise in circumstances that would have made him "excludable" to begin with. In that case, since he entered fraudulently tobegin with he can be stripped of his citizenship-like Nazi war criminals getting under false pretenses.
Nor is it necessarily true that he had to be a naturalized citizen. Merely because a person is foreign born does not preclude the possibility that he was also born an American. There is a rather complicated parentage based matrix that should be applied in these cases, and suffice to say that the end result is based on if both, or either parents were American and how much time each qualifying parent spent physically within the US before the age of 18.
If his status is LPR (legal permanent resident), he may be removed if he is convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude and he has not maintained a continous residence in the US for 7 years. Here is the rub-a crime of moral turpitude has a funny definition according to the code. I would give an example of the matrix but I can't find my code book. (must have left it at Dugan's in a stupor)
So, if he wasn't an asshole(like the Constitutional Cowboy A/2 Gun Team)it is likely that he won't be "removed". Especially, if he is a naturalized citizen and not so under fraudulent conditions.

Don't hate on the A/2 gun team. They investigate tips regarding illegal kept weapons; that's what they do. The fireman had stuff he shouldn't have. He'll have to deal with it. It's a wake up call for a bunch of coppers as well. If you have "stuff" you shouldn't have, and you get caught, shame on you! We all know what the rules are regarding keeping firearms in our homes. We all know they have to be registered. Somebody shows up with a warrant and you have contraband, you'll have to answer for it. And what's up with the Nazi stuff? Why would anybody keep that shit anyway? I think the guy's gotta be a little soft upstairs...

I fully agree with those officers asking why it took 2-4 years to make a case on these officers. One would think that with all the lawsuits, the alleged internal investigation, the detectives investigating the various criminal allegations and the ever present rumor mill that this Dept., the Supt., and IAD weren't trying very hard to get rid of these bad apples. If evidence was needed, it seems that all the Dept. had to do was look at the ODPO who was home-invaded or the SWS tavern owner that was kidnapped and taken to his home in Oak Lawn by these guys - is the ASA saying that these victims weren't credible? What isn't credible is the administration's and Devine's reluctance to pursue this case and to prosecute these officers as the offenders that they are. . .

It just seems that the bigger the case is, the less this Dept. is likely to take action. At least two of these guys were sent down to New Orleans - makes you wonder how much they stole down there. How can the Dept. possibly justify their own supervisors calling them "good policemen" to get them out of CR#'s and court deviations and keeping them on the SWAT team, the HBT team or in SOS while knowing that these guys were stickup men? Its no wonder that morale is in the toilet!!!!!

WHERE IS OUR UNION DURING ALL OF THIS? Let me ask you this, for the first time I beg you to think what exactly have they done, for this or anything recently? We pay them to protect us, to help us, yet have they made one comment on this, or any in the past. Yes, they were charged, yes they will not reresent them, BUT have they inquired int he bond or taken any sort of investigation into this?? ALSO< look at the jusges up for retention, isnt the judge who conducted these officers fate up for retention? HMMM Perfect timing for all of this, elections..,Which brings me once again to our wonderful FOP...Do you think ANY of them have the balls to stick uo for us, really in a meaningful way, OR are they frightrened of the reprocussions of their positions. I thought we voted not the higher ups who they are so afraid of. Think people, you may need them one day. Are these the people you want on your side quiet, timid and afraid TO REALLY stand up for one of us, or a person who is not afraid to have a voice.? A person who is in their position to help us, NOT worrying about where they will end up in a few years after election. As for the money deposited in checking accounts from these officers, WHAT you did not hear in court is how one officer took out a second mortgage on his house for a divorce, the other sold his condo and bought a house and made a ton of money from that. THIS of course, will be proven. Come on, even the stupidest of people would not make large sums of deposits. Honestly, think realistically! Now how many of you have sold a house or refinanced recently? Now we have to watch out for shit like that in case one day a partner, or someone on our job does something stupid and we this is used as evidence? And for those of you taking the word of nespapers, God help you. Unless you hear it first hand, you cant believe shit! These are good people, maybe a few poor choices, but they got screwed and will hopefully beat most of this. I am disgraced at the ASAs office, they live by Innocent until proving guilty, except in this case. What is it pick and choose? I wonder what political figure is in charge of this and making these decisions. SAD SAD This is why our city is so bad right now, all the big players that may get taken down during election times are cleaning up things and people that may stand in their way. Again, sad! The facts will come out in court and I think you will be astonoshed by what they have. States attorneys walked out of that courtroom with tears in their eyes. This was a disgrace

Is stealing from a drug dealer really theft? Is raping a prostitute really Criminal Sexual Assault or just a theft of service? These are some of the questions that keep me up late at night...

I was assigned to job a few years back in the PJs where the guy claims that someone robbed him and took all his dope (true story). They actually dispatched the job?!

What gets me is that we see these corruption scandals unfold every few years: Marquette 10 (or 11), Broken Star, 002nd District (Capt. CW), 007th District, 016th District (shaking down Polish Immigrants), 006th District, and all the other individuals that get fired/indicted inbetween...

JF is the first guy you'd want to arrive when you're getting your ass kicked and call a 10-1. He brought in dope and guns by the truckload and is/was a a guy that most coppers looked up to for his work ethic. I think the most upsetting part of all this is the Det. that is rolling on the others to save his own skin! Ok he may lose his job, but he gets to go home after a day of taking calls, have his wife make him dinner (if she has not left him yet) and collect a pay check! where is the justice here? How do we allow that to go on? I must admit I do feel for the guys caught up in this. I am not defending any wrong doing! But where did we go wrong as a department to allow our fellow officer go down that path and not say anything! Someone mentioned it where was the Sgt, Lt, Commander? Did they take a blind eye, or were they in on it? The profer from what I was told, was very long and contained a volume of charges. One must ask himself how does 8 to 12 coppers from a so called elite unit do all that and not one boss has the fisrt clue!!! I think there is much more to this and I only hope that the mgt is not protected while the blue shirt go down in flames. I hope that the Sup does not protect some while others fall. Regardless of white shirt or blue we are all the police. We are all to some degree a family.

Guilty until proven innocent? Right, just like Flagg and the guys from 007. I don't recall coppers sticking up for them, but here we are crusading for the SOS crew. Thats like the A2 gun team catching grief for arresting so called "gun collectors". That guy had all types of Nazi stuff as well as photos of black men and women with the faces "X" out. If he was black coppers would have celebrated and called him a "gang banger" Oh I guess we don't want to mention that part. The guys from SOS are no different from the guys from 007. TRASH!!!! It's funny how many guys here smile in your face and disrespect you behind your back. Black officers get caught "Gang bangers" white officers get caught "innocent until proven guilty". The sad part of it all is the general public can read these post and see the same problem. All the hard working coppers keep your heads up, this will pass. All you racist, name calling 2 year wonders, do us a favor and go to hell! A2 gun team keep up the good work, go get the next so called "Collector"

Get one thing straight, it is possible to make that much money on side jobs. Not for a lazy a** like you but when you have a motivation to have your kids not go to school with kids who's parents you have arrested, you would be surprised how hard it is to say no to side jobs. Also don't tell me you have never heard of cops getting paid cash. We also sold a house and made a huge profit in 2002 and deposited it all at one time. We can prove where the money came from and I highly doubt these officers were stupid enough to deposit it without knowing it would be questioned. Also, if JF and his wife had no bank account, where did he deposit it???????

I have been on the job long enough to remember too many police scandals. Some were bonafide where officers did penitentiary time. Some turned out to be much to do about nothing. The one thing all the investigations had in common, they were announced with big media fanfare and jurisdictional prosecutors/investigators enumerating the overwhelming evidence against the officers. Often the evidence is exaggerated or non-existent.
Anyone remember the burglary of a beef stand in the 20th District. Two officers were charged and stood trial on the evidence of a video tape where allegedly their faces, badge numbers and name tags were identifiable. I personally viewed the video. The picture was of such poor quality, you could not even tell the one person visual was wearing a CPD uniform. I knew both of the accused well and could not identify either. The judge ruled the video was useless and acquitted both.
Feds attempted a sting on a 17th District tactical team. The officers investigated the fabricated gambling tip and discovered a heavily armed man apparently casing the location. He was taken into custody and eventually found out to be an FBI agent. These officers did nothing wrong. Feds leaked the failed investigation to the media, the officers were slandered, the stand-up District Commander (who would not dump the team) was transferred, and his replacement scattered the team per order of headquarters.
Ladies and gentlemen, please don’t judge these officers until all the evidence is heard. I for one can wait for this to play out. I hope for the officers involved, their families and the department as a whole, there is more smoke than fire. Until then, I pray for the safety of each and every one of you. Stay safe and protect your partner.

I think I can speak for all of us when I state none of us condone criminal conduct by policeman. We abhore it, it's the reason we become policemen. I have compassion for the accused officers for a simple reason-at one point early in their live's they were most likely honest policemen and enthusiastic workers. It would appear, however, that they succumbed to the corrupting influences we are esposed to almost daily on this job. So as we slam them for what they became try to remember the policemen they once were.
