Crime Down

But homicides are up. By one.

From the Channel 7 website:
  • Statistics released by the Chicago police department show that violent crime in the city is down this year in most categories.Overall, violent crime decreased three percent through the end of September. That includes an 8.4 percent reduction in criminal sexual assault and a 4.9 percent decline in aggravated battery.

Only the murder rate is up slightly -- point-three percent -- compared to last year.

Car theft was also up by 3.1 percent.

So give yourself a pat on the back people. No one else is about to.

Whoa.... Lt. Richie Scotchbreath blew a fuse (and probably a .20 breath alcohol level) after seeing the post here on SCC about him leaving Hinky Dinks Bar and while walking zig zag to the unmarked squad car was opening a white envelope filled with greenbacks. The funny thing was he didn't deny that it happened but said, "What S.O.B. copper has nothing better to do than watch me and write about it!" He was screaming and yelling at everyone.

A big pat on the back for writing about our fearless scotchbreath leader! You got him more riled than we could!

Funny thing in the old days, the bosses actually trusted underling bagmen to do that kind of dirty work but I think he was killing two birds with one stone. Get stoned, get greenbacks!

(As with the previous poster, the real names of the guilty have been changed - but even "HE" could figure out who it was!)

How many homicides thus far in Chicago? More or less than this time last year?

Actually the Superintendent at the last DOC meeting told all those in attendance to go back and to tell the troops thank you for doing an outstanding job in bringing down the crime rate. He also stated that U.S. Attorney General Gonzalez told other Department Chiefs, last week in Boston, that they should look to Chicago as the example for bringing down their crime rates. So....If no one thanked you, officers, for doing a great job every day, let me be the one. Besides all the ranting and raving that goes on here, myself included, when it comes time to be the police, we all, for the most part, step up to the plate and take care of business. Lt. 024

Retirement -

Young people frequently ask us retired coppers what we do to make our
days interesting. Well, for example, the other day I went into town and went to a small shop down on Mag mile. I was only in there for about 10 minutes. When I came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. I went up to him and said, "Come on buddy, how
about giving a senior citizen a break?"

He looked up, then ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a heartless Nazi bastard. He glared at me and then started writing another ticket for no vehicle sticker. So I called him a
piece of stinking dog @#%$.

He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. I called him an @#%$ and a pig. Then he started writing a third ticket. I called his mother a slut and a whore.

This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I orally abused him, the more tickets he wrote.

Personally, I didn't give a @#%$. I came downtown by bus. I try to have a little fun each day now that I'm
retired. It's important at my age

Some thoughts and observations: 1) car theft up....because no one, including the CPD, cares at all about auto thefts; 2) homicides up slightly...have we reached a significant point of diminishing return, i.e., a point where the homicide totals will remain a constant (give or take a few), because in a city this size, with so many thugs and gangbangers, with so much dope and so many guns, it just won't go any lower; to the extent that many of the numbers are lower, are we not solving anything, just pushing it around, from neighborhood to neighborhood, or from city to suburbs?

You sure are right about giving yourself a pat on the back because no one else is going to. The department used too, but not anymore. Why? I understand there is still a continuing saga involving officers in this department that will be dumped from tact and gangs and God knows where else because of exessive complaints against them. (20+ CR's). I saw recent posts about this and heard people talking about it in the district. Maybe I can shed more light on the matter for those aggresive officers. In the Sunday, October 22 Chicago Tribune, the PERSPECTIVE (section 2) page 1 (bottom right) there is an excellent article that reads when cops go bad, everyone pays. I have read the article and was angry that all this business of CR numbers is because of some University of Chicago Law professor did a "study" of citizen complaints against police and found 662 officers have accumulated 10 or more CR's in the past five years. The professor states that this is corruption and damages the department and innocent citizens. THIS IS BIG. BECAUSE OF ONE CIVILIAN WHO IS ON A WITCH HUNT FOR CORRUPT OFFICERS AND HIS QUEST FOR DISCIPLINE HAS SOMEHOW MANAGED TO GET THIS POLICY MOVE IN OUR DEPARTMENT EFFECTING OUR OWN OFFICERS EVEN THOUGH A LOT OF THE CR NUMBERS ARE BOGUS. ( REMEMBER, IN SOME OF THOSE YEARS NO SIGNED AFFIDAVITS WERE REQUIRED.) WHERE IS THE FOP'S STAND ON THIS. WHERE IS THE FOP'S VOICE? SCC? ANY MORE INPUT ON THIS? THIS IS INCREDIBLE. WHAT ELSE IS "SOMEBODY" ELSE GOING TO COME UP WITH TO AFFECT THE DEPARTMENT. LIVES OF SOME VERY GOOD NON-CORRUPT OFFICERS ARE BEING AFFECTED BY THIS AND NOT A WORD OF OUTRAGE IS BEING SPOKEN. THAT IS THE OUTRAGE. WE HAVE BECOME TOO COMFORTABLE. SCC?

TO: Filmorranger

SUBJECT:

I cannot vote for anyone who refuses to tell whether he has hired a criminal attorney with funds from his campaign commitee.

It looks more and more plausible that "Blago" will be sharing a jail cell with Ryan.

The only questions that I have will Thompson and Webb represent "Blago" for free and will Aaron Patterson share the cell with them?

As for Pat Quinn he is a decent fellow but he is incapable of running the State of Illinois and for a so-called reformer he refuses to condemn the actions of his running mate.

It is my opinion that Government needs checks and ablances and therefore a Republican should be in-charge in Springfield and either the House or Senate in DC should be controlled by the Democrats. Then the spending, corruption and mis-management are somewhat controlled.

As for Cook County government someone needs to take over and find out how bad the problems are!
Stroger and Beavers are not the answer.

I therefore will vote for Topinka and Peraica...

lets see, reduce / eliminate the perks of going to tac/gang/sat/ tru/sos and then punish the most aggressive (effective) officers.
makes you think that those who advocate doing the minimum and living for the 1st/16th might be on to something.
but who will the bosses get to do the heavy lifting that keeps things from getting out of hand.
the hotties at HQ, the beat officers who have been treated like shit for so long, yeah, good luck!
better just keep on ADJUSTING those stats.

If we are doing such a great job, then why did the 3rd W/C (Lt. O'B)in 020 this past Friday (the day after the last DOC meeting) state at the 1500 roll call: "EVERY OFFICER ON THE THIRD WATCH IS A LAZY SCUMBAG"

We are now having stand up roll calls everyday until everyone writes a curfew. Fat chance with that in 020 in the wintertime.

Per I-CLEAR Homicides from 1Jan06 to 30Sep06 = 353
Same period in 2005 = 352

But, for the entire month of Oct 2005, there were 38 homicides.
For this October (up to 20Oct06) the number is only 24.

I can't believe that somebody posted what Lt. Richie Scotchbreath was observed doing! He's been hitting the bars and carrying a cold six-pack in the squad for years. Glad somebody finally told it like it is. My only gripe with the guy is that even if you have a take home car as a Tact Lt., use your own car if your going to suace it up. We have had enough bad press this year. We don't need a news flash of a drunken Lt. running over a little kid. When the news breaks bad on one of us, it makes it harder for us all.

Lt. Scotchbreath, PLEASE wait till the tour is over before getting all sauced up! God forbid, it's only 8 damn hours.

And to think this guy got a merit promotion to both Sgt. and Lt. while other hard working good guys were passed up!

i have almost 6 years on the job so by any means im not saying i know it all because i know very little if i know anything..... but i do know what works for me and believe it or not i do not have one cr in six years. and dont give me the "your not the working police because i am on tact. and get between 15-20 arrests a period. its funny because a lot of times the people i arrest walk to lock- up with a smile on their face. there is no need to make this job personal i treat everyone with respect unless they cross the line which very few do. there is no need to mother f#@% your arrestee. some of these coppers and even on my own team once they make an arrest they think they are johnny bad a%% and they want to talk to their head like he/she is a piece of shit. let me ask what do you get out of that? as long as me and my partner are going home thats all that matters.once in awhile my partner and i get worked up and start arguing with a prisoner while we are transporting them to the station and we normally stop half way there and ask ourselves ....why are we arguing with this person? there is no point ? and that is the extent of it. its a job 8 hrs? these gurus who are tackleberries carrying their guns around to a ballgame or even to mow their lawn.... who sit at a bar and talk about all there arrests. dude thats pathetic. its like a accountant or trader sitting around and telling all his buddies how bad azz he is and how many numbers he crunched. listen nobody cares about your stories. unless its a funny story something very comical and unique i do not talk about my arrests to anybody. whats the point self gratification? lets be realistic who wants to hear that? its like a basketball player that had a good game and he goes around telling everyone how many points he scored. how many times have you been on an arrest and someone comes up to you while your trying to do your paper work and ask "what you got man"? i always say treason or bigamy. get the fu%# out of my face let me do my paperwork so i dont have to sit in the station any longer than i have to and if you really wanna know so bad what i got go to your car and E>D> me on the pdt. i have worked with people who have had many cr's and working with them for ten minutes i see the reason why. just got we are the police doesnt mean we are better than people and can talk to people the way we want. yes some deserve to be treated like shit and belittled but those are far and few between. many coppers get into the mode of talking to everyone like a piece of shit. listen as far as im concerned we are little pawns for the city. we make shit money. and there is no need to make this job personal or make it our lives. so do yourself and everyone else a favor. quit bitching and look in the mirror and ask yourself how you could make this job better for you and your family. fu#@ the city fu$@ the bosses. how can you make your life easier. as long as the pay check is there the 1st and the 16th thats all that should really matter the shit in between should be gravy. why get grey hairs mother-fu#$in evryone. smile and kill em with kindness. believe me people think you are nuts when you are always smiling and that nothing bothers you. but are you nuts? or are you really the genius?

I don't know what they do in Area 5 with homicides, but I can tell you in Area 2 I have never made any case a death investigation or involuntary manslaughter that was a murder. Never. I also do not know of any fellow detectives here who have done that. Look at our numbers, up almost two dozen from same period last year.

What's the advantage of making a homicide not a homicide? I get the O/T either way. Also, in a death investigation you have to give a reason and cause of the death. If the Area 5 guy is true, then he is a disgrace. I suspect he is not even a detective, but one who has an axe to grind.
