- This “Training Session” consisted of a (less than) ten minute video (copyright CPD 2001) and an Lt. from 011 telling everyone to wear comfortable street clothes when they come out to be the “support units” for the district tactical teams performing these “Reverse Drug Stings”.
Can anyone verify this? We're all for more bodies on the streets. Closed Market sitting on a street corner is one thing, but pulling people out of HQ and throwing them into an environment like the 011th District on reverse stings of all things, is dangerous not only for themselves, but could possibly endanger a whole bunch of Tactical people. What the hell is "support units"?

I dont have first hand knowledge on that, but I recall that in oct '03 or '04 people from almost every unit in HQ were told to meet at the old driving range behind 025 where we were then broken up into teams. The dept. was doing a large number of reverse stings simultaneously in 015 and 025. We were there as support, searching, transporting. It was abunch of standing around, looking busy and cool in CD. The tact/gang teams did all the real work.

Where do i begin? okay lets start with the 008th district. Came over there a while ago, nice people on 3rd watch but for the most part nobody does any police work except for a few. The place is way too big and not enough police(workin) because so many people are detailed out and we never have any openings as to let the people who live in 008 police it the way it needs to be policed. Tact is another story, know a bunch of great workin police, but must stay on east side of district while west of pulaski to harlem gets invaded by numerous latino gangs(26,lk,latin satins,latin dragon,sd etc...). Its funny how clines own neighborhood cannot be visited by 008 tact/gang team when all of the major weight is west of pulaski. Thats all for now

It is true. I was at one of these "training sessions" which consisted of watching an outdated streaming video and a brief Q and A session. The Tact Lt. from 011 related that people utilized from HQ would not be acting a dope dealers, lookouts, security, etc. HQ personnel would be used as support functions such as: transporting, searching, filling out paperwork, and whatever else.
Personnel will be called by the "HQ company Deployment" system someone came up as with situations when there is a march, protest, etc.

It's not like the street where you can blow off the paper/job or hold yourself down on jobs. I actually enjoy working the street because I get a change of pace.

It's true. A/3 will get the first district. The brain surgeons at 35th are giving A/3 only 4 additional detectives to handle close to 10,000 jobs a year. They are already woefully short detectives. I wish I could disregard common sense when making decisions. I guess that would make me an exempt.

I hated this when I was a PPO(and questioning everything I saw) kid when you have 15-20 years on the job you can work the desk. Thats for guy who have paid thier dues.
When I did my field training the desk was filled with grumpy old men with solid grey hair, and one younger women. So I asked why she was there, and I was told she blew the W/C.
Skip forward 16 years, the desks are filled with girls (usually single mothers) with less than 5 years. The wagon/beat cars with grey haired veterans.
Ive witnessed the "I gotta work inside, I got a baby/babbies, and Im a single mother, I cant get a babysitter on 3rd or 1st" diatribe.
I dont feel sorry for those "single mothers" thats just soft soaping the fact that they gave it up to some mope. Sluts? Whores? you make the call, but all I know is that the Bosses are afraid of them and give them what they want forcing the older guys to wind down thier careers in a beat car.
I am now taking one step back off my soap box. Yes I am pissed off cause after 16 years I was asked by a white shirt to bid to 1st so a Female Officer could make the bid cause she is a single mother and needs to be home after school when young Johnnie/Julio/Jafarri arrives. I am white and worked for Starks in 011 as a watch and district commander. My friends are all white too. We averaged 100 hours of court in the 90's. We all worked and Starks took good care of us all. If he changed...that's always a possibility. But he was great..no fantastic in 011. That is the truth.

Starks was a GREAT boss to work for in 011...VERY stand up....I have NOTHING bad to say about the guy...and by the way...I'm white as well and he backed up his guys and worked right along side of us every night....if you called for back up...he'd be right there..no problem! He was great

For those of you who do not know Dana I feel sorry for you. He is a very good man. He is a good family man as well. I feel that the people who hide behind the poison pen are cowards. I am a female on this job and I come from a police family. I was told by my family when I took this job to shut my mouth and that I would probably get midnights and work most holidays. I too think it's a disgrace that some females on this job pull the "I'm a single mother and I have to work in the office or I have to have 2nd watch" crap. We all knew when we took this job that we would work crappy hours and holidays. What about all the fathers who never get to be with their kids. My dad was on the job a long time and he never pulled that crap. Shame on the bosses for letting the women get away with this crap. Unless you have a kid who is handicapped, you should have to put your time in and leave the inside spots and 2nd watch to people who earned it.

It didn't happen in 011. Dana was the acting street deputy, wearing civies (that means not in uniform).
It was on the 3rd of July.
I didn't mother fuck him because I'm a badass, I told him to "get the fuck off my crime scene" because I could not tell, by his appearence or his diction, that he was a copper, much less a boss.
Nor was my issue with Starks a racial one. That was Malcolm's issue (because malcolm is a racist).
My issue was that Starks is unprofessional, political, unqualified, and an embarassment.
There are plenty of people on this job, even bosses, who are more accomplished, more educated, have great reputations with their subordinates, and have superior communication skills then Starks.
SO, if you could tell me just what "unique" quality starks brings to the table, that makes him the obvious choice to be the #2 guy, I would love to hear it.
And as I can't speak to how Starks treats his men (I never directly worked for him), I would love some input on that from the 011 tact team that, on new years eve - 2001, inventoried his girltoys duty weapon (which they came across after it was being fired off from her appartment behind the 011 district station.)

Fast Forward a few days later at a suburban department store
The White shirt and I had a man to man conversation. I explained to him that if he ever asked me to do that again a trip to Mt. Sinai or Cook County ER (cant say Stroger) was in his future.
What does it take for a white shirt to take a swing at a blue shirt? I used words like asshole, pussy, jag-off. The only change came when I called him a merit sgt who was a coward to go further than 4 blocks from the station.

Regardless of how you feel toward Starks, most people from 011 when he was there praised him. He seemed to speak just fine when he was a Commander there. Speaks just fine at the DOC meetings every week when he introduces the DOC awardees. Everybody seems to understand the man just fine. But if you never met him and wandered onto this site, you'd just assume him to be a blithering retard. Charles Williams. Basically RUNNING the day to day operations of the CPD, and doing a very good job, from the consensus. Even the Mayor has publicly praised him. Judy Baar Topinka has presented him with an award recently. He's probably the next Supt. of Police, if he wants the job. He's on top of everything that goes on. Yet, very little positive things are posted here about him. People post here that he looks like Cline, when he is NOWHERE NEAR AS BIG. What will the anonymous race baiters say when he gets those two extra stars on his collar in the next 12/18 months? What then?
Will ANY black bosses ever "make the grade" on this blog? Funny, nobody cuts down Malloy, rarely Risley, Grau, or McCotter; other white, male exempts appear to miss the knife here regularly. People have even posted here complaining of what SHOES Maher had on when she arrived on the scene of a triple homicide ON HER DAY OFF. I guess she should have gone home and changed. Sims, now deceased, was a black man who earned the admiration and respect of virtually all of officers who had the privelege of working with him..

I'll agree with you about Charlie Williams. In the dealings that I've had with the man, he always treated me quite well. Quite intelligent and treats people with respect.
Mike McCotter? I dare you to find anyone who has something bad to say about the man. Best boss I ever worked for, hands down.
Hiram Grau and Jim Molloy? Always good people to deal with. Never had a problem with either of them.
Maher? Know nothing, good for nothing bitch with an attitude. Worthless.

What it all seems to come down to, in my humble opinion, is what you make of each of the 25 districts in the City. All Districts have positive points, and negative ones. Poor supervision out there can make working in some districts a nightmare. As I've stated earlier, poor supervision is the key to what's wrong out here. Why are there RAPS at 1030AM? What are all these cars doing, and why aren't the supervisors asking themselves this question, and finding out? Instead, I've heard supervisors go "down on reports" when there are no cars available.
This is just unacceptable. When the job starts to crack a tighter whip on the W/C's (and, where they are fortunate enough to have them, the field Lt.), then and only then will things improve in patrol. Sgts. need to log their people in by riding on more calls. Seeing how people are handling their business, and monitoring the amount of time it takes them to handle the business is the key to all this backlog garbage. Don't get me wrong, a major incident or incident plan will sap your manpower, but I see far too many people out here taking far too much time on routine BS without a word from the front line supervisors. If you don't want to be a Sgt., then DON'T, but if you accept the badge and the shirt change, then DO THE JOB. Why two 10-4 units need to go into the station to arrest one man? Again, why is nothing said to stop these kinds of blatant manpower abuse?
just to quickly mention about maher and the triple.. i guess she forgets when she gets into that company car why she has one, and that is because she is on call 24x7 and she should dress accordingly. and as for c.williams he wasn't far behind the way he was dressed. And if she or he was busy or at a party then that is fine start a phone tree with the blackberries, you dont need every tom dick and harry at the scene. if you ask me "i think when you have seven or however many bosses on the scene it just makes it look really stupid like the first boss there can't handle it" and probably the only reason is to account for why they have a company car.
