St Jude Parade Question

St. Jude is a parade for our fallen. Paraphrasing an eloquent quote from an old time boss, we get up and march on Sunday for those who cannot. A noble sentiment. And this year, the parade route is to be changed to begin at the Gold Star Memorial Park. We have expressed our opinion that we preferred the Michigan Avenue route as it was more accessible and more in the public view and our fear that our parade is being shunted to a less public venue so as to be "out of sight, out of mind."

That's our opinion. This is our website. We get to put it out there for debate. It doesn't make us right or wrong. And we welcome other opinions, expressed civilly - and even some of those expressed not so civilly.

We have a question however, and we'd like an answer from somewhere - is the City, by means of the Park District (and by City and Park District, we mean the mayor) going to be charging for parking at Soldier Field, McCormick Place and museum parking lots on the day of the St. Jude march?

This is a legit question and we'd like an answer. Soon. We know bosses read this board. We know certain bosses at 35th Street don't have filters on their computers and read this board from the office. We know the Superintendent gets briefed on occasion of some things that appear on this board (and we heard he truly enjoyed the Midway Airport photo shopping that appeared here).

We think cops, and coppers' families, have a right to know in advance whether the City is going to be making any money off of dead police officers. Because that's what it boils down to. Yes, parking was a bitch in years past, but you didn't run the risk of getting towed or ticketed in 018 on the first Sunday in May. Now we have to wonder if we're going to nickeled and dimed just to show up to support dead police officers.

Understand, WE ARE NOT ADVOCATING A BOYCOTT OF ST. JUDE. We never have and never will. Certain commentators on this site have advocated certain actions and we have let most of these posts stand and fall on their own merits. We supported last year's sign that embarrassed the exempt members of the Department who didn't have the balls to speak up about naming a street after a dead piece of shit. The father of Officer Michael Gordon has commented in a couple of posts answering some of these proposals. We keep our own counsel in these matters and make our own choices. We will say that we have missed only one St. Jude parade ever and don't plan on missing any in the future.

Even a small gesture of not charging coppers (and their families) for parking at a parade that honors those who gave all for this city would go a long way toward repairing the damage done to this Department. But the cynic in us isn't holding out much hope.

I don't think that they will make us pay for parking for St. Jude because on the candlelight vigil and the opening night of the memorial, they had free parking in the lots adjacent to the park.

If they do make us pay, this year will be the last for me. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Every other group in the city gets to march in front of Cameras and on city streets that are closed to traffic and inconvienence the public. Except for St Judes which is done as early as possible on Sun. morning and they get us in and out as soon as possible. We should march at High Noon down Mich. Av. You want to honor our fallen brothers then do it right and in strong numbers on an early Sun May afternoon for all to see.

They should leave it where it is. These officers died serving communities. They died so people could enjoy all the riches of the city. The Mag Mile is a major recipient of those lost lives. Soldier Field is an isolated area out of the view of the people. Even though its early in the morning and on a Sunday, people are still made aware of our dedication. There is something about passing the Water Towers and goind west. This is the heart of the city and those officers are soul of the city.
I always imagine that the fallen are looking down and laughing at all those officers that can barely fit in their blouse, the balding, the graying and those idiots that got promoted.
It was nice to walk to church right after.
I'LL always go, but bad change of venue.

If there is to be a change in the parade, it is the thinking of ADS Pat McNulty. I don't know any police officer who thinks poorly of this ADS, so perhaps somone close to him will ask him for his views, and then we can see if we agree. Perhaps they can have the Mass there for those who choose to participate. Change is not always a bad thing. Let's view this from all angles.

I tried to post this in the appropriate blog post but you closed it. SCC, why do you or other posters have it out for the "states attorney's kid"? Every so often you post something and then comment on how you don't think he will be a detective for long or now you post how you bet he won't be in 15 very long". What the fuck? Do you know him? Do you know someone who knows him? Do you know something about him that we don't? Have you ever heard from 1st hand info that he was ever given a spot on the watch? or on a team? merit Det. spot? merit Sgt. spot? If not.... then shut the fuck up. I know 1st hand that he worked midnights in 011 for years and then went to a tact team and worked and made good arrests. He worked like all of us do for years in the district... he didn't get sent to Gang. Inteligence or Narc. Section or any of the spots that Bosses kids go to, he was in 011 with us working everyday raising a family. He took the Sgt's test and scored around 300 and he took the Det's test and made it in the first class with a score in the 20's. So now he is a Det. and takes the new Sgt.'s test and scores in the top 100 but gets made off the old list which went up to 350 or higher. Now instead of asking to go to a nice District, or as you often think he could ask his dad to send him to a unit like Gang. or Narc. or one of many specialized juice units he ends up going to 015th Dist. Where he works on the street. This sounds like a cop who did good and happens to have a dad who is successful. Anyone who knows him will tell ya he is a great guy and thats the knida guy you want to make Sgt. and will take care of coppers to make sure they are safe.

I know this won't go over well, but the parade is nothing more than a photo/publicity op for the department bosses and city. If you believe its for the families, than god bless you. The higher ups don't. If they did, they wouldn't push and prod for your attendance. If they truley cared for the families, why do many of them have to sue to get their benefits? Remember the crash on Belmont where coppers in special employed died? The families were denied their benefits because the officers were going to their assignments - not at them. EVEN THOUGH IT HAPPENED IN A MARKED SQUAD CAR AFTER ROLL CALL! There are many more examples to list but it would take up too much room.
If the department wanted to honor the fallen and show unity, why don't they treat the families better? Because there is no "showmanship" involved! How about skipping the parade and giving police families their benefits without trying to screw them out of them? Better medical? Medical paid for retirees? The list can go into the hundreds. The dept. loves all the fanfare of marches and funerals. Don't think for a minute that the brass feel the same way as you do. If the department supports it -- I question it!

This is just my opinion, based wholly upon past performance.

There have been at least (4) other ceremonies at the now completed Memorial from the first candlelight vigil, groundbreaking, dedication and subsequent ceremony etc.

Each time there was ample parking either around the memorial or in the {Standard Co.} parking garage.
Every time it was free, and rightly so. I'm sure that Standard Parking will [again] donate the facility freely for a few hours on this date.

I predict that the department, either by having the question raised via this site or as information in general, will address the parking issue when all the details for this new site [St. Jude]location are announced.

Like the location change or not, BE THERE first of all THEN use this forum to state your observations and opinions.

Until then, my brothers in blue, let's not lose sight of WHY and WHO we honor on this day.

It's a matter of tradition and respect pure and simple.

If you can't attend for a host of understandable reasons, keep those members we salute on this day in your thoughts and prayers, whatever faith or denomination.

We OWE it to them as..........

"All Gave Some Because Some Gave All!"

Off topic but important. Over heard the following:

Their conclusion was that no one is doing any good if the Police and their families get breaks, soooooooooo, they are going to start really writing cops and families. just thought yous should know.

As to St. Jude, hey lets march through all the places where our bretheren died- Filmore, Cabrini, Taylor, etc.

I have missed few St. Jude Parades in almost 33 years. I go back to the time when we marched into Holy Name, through the tunnel and out the back.

Having it on the morning of the first Sunday in May makes it special. It means our kids can come and we always get it on the news.

Richie M. will never be the Mayor his father was. The old man would be in the reviewing stand I respected that. This Daley never comes to anything on a Sunday and I don't want him there.

From the Concerned County Police Sergeant Local 3953:

Something to ponder when we march in a few weeks...

One of my guys in the north area patrol got pinched for DUI the other night in 018. Yeah, I suppose he was intoxicated, but all he did was to fall asleep in a parked car with his keys in the ignition.

He is a good kid, had his ID, and is a good hardworking young policeman and former marine.

The claim that the arresting officers didnt know he was the police is total BS. When they searched him incident to the arrest, how did they miss his off-duty star and ID cards?

He NEVER gave the arresting officers any shit. I absolutely believe him.

In 22 years of law enforcement, I have never pimped or allowed my guys to pimp another policeman.

I simply just don't get it.

Now he is stripped of his credentials, and is the focus of the shame of an IA investigation.

Nevertheless, I will still march in your parade as I have done for many years. Maybe we will march by the spot where your guys pinched him, huh?

In my 20+ years I have never did that to any copper Chicago or from anywhere else? What kind of goofs would do something like this? Especially in 18 the drunk bar capital of the city.

I am curious as to why you think we would be charged for parking at the parade? We (the police) generate more revenue then any other city employes.
If we stopped writing parkers for even one day, the revenue loss for the city would be far greater then what they would collect from charging us.

To charge us for parking would cause bad PR, and a rebellion on our part. I would think the mayor is aware of that.

(on a similar note, I refuse to issue parkers during the time period between when our contract expires [30 JUN 06] and when the new contract is sigend off on. If we could come together as a group and all do the same, maybe hizhonor would understand the importance of treating us fairly.)

We have a question however, and we'd like an answer from somewhere - is the City, by means of the Park District (and by City and Park District, we mean the mayor) going to be charging for parking at Soldier Field, McCormick Place and museum parking lots on the day of the St. Jude march?
-----------------------------------
Anyone asking/debating this question about parking costs obviously hasn't been to the CPD memorial dedication, vigil, charity 5Ks, etc.... the lots are open and free for the police the day/evening of the event! There are so many things to complain about, this ISN'T one of them, SCC! The CPD memorial organization has worked tirelessly raising money for a beautiful park (& noble cause). I doubt that even a third of the department has seen it or attended any dedications prior to its construction. Our parade has always been "out of sight, out of mind"!!!! The only people, other than our families & friends, who are on the sidewalks watching are the yuppies who have to wait for all of us to pass so they can cross the street for their grande no-foam lattes!

IN REGARDS TO HB AND RA WRITING COPPERS, AND THEIR FAMILIES. I AM A WORKING P.O. FROM A WEST SIDE DISTRICT THAT DOES ALLOT OF TRAFFIC. I CAN HONESTLY SAY I HAVE IMPOUNDED JUST ABOUT EVERY SHITHEADS CAR WHO EVER DROVE ON DIVISION. STR. BUT I DRAW THE LINE , I ONLY GO AFTER GANGBANGERS AND SHITBIRDS AND LEAVE WORKING PEOPLE WITH D.L. AND INSURANCE ALONE. ALSO I WOULD NEVER WRITE A COPPER OR HIS FAMILY. IN REGARDS TO CCSP, IF A CPD DUI ONE OF YOUR GUYS AND IF IT WAS BULSHIT , I APOLOGIZE , REMEMBER WE ALL WEAR BLUE, GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS ALL OF LAW ENFORCEMENT,

Your post got me interested in the St. Jude Parade. I was going to publicize it on my blog and try to get a little more citizen support for it. I'm in Rogers Park, and I think the police up here would appreciate seeing some good will from us non-cops.

Searching on Google and Yahoo for "St. Jude Parade" gives basically nothing, except a link to the Claretians, who have a page about a St. Jude Police March that happened in 1943. Searches for "St. Jude Police March" yield equally squat. I called the Claretians, but they said they don't know anything about it anymore. They gave me a number that has no answer and no answering machine. Dead end investigation. I guess I could call back, but who wants to cross-examine the Claretians? It's evidently not their project anymore.

I can find plenty of information about supposedly secret societies like the Masons on the Internet, but there isn't jack about this St. Jude thing out here. What's the big secret? I thought it was some sort of public event honoring fallen police officers. If this is an effort to get people to show up and do something, you need to find the person in charge of publicity and marketing, and introduce him/her to the Internet.

If this St. Jude event is actually a secret, congratulations to the organizers. It's really hard to keep things off the Internet, so they're doing a great job.

From the concerned County Police Sergeant Local 3953:

Thanks for your kind words and empathy towards our guy.

I was told that it occurred in 018 and it was a traffic car, not a normal beat guy.

I haven't seen the reports as he is detailed to our headquarters in Maywood and I am up in the meadows. He was put on days and I am on nights. As soon as I can meet him (he is under strict orders from IAD to clam up) I will get the 411 out you guys on who what where. I don't know if I were to scan the tickets and warning to motorist if will make it on the blog. I assume not.

I told my guys that there will be absolutely positively NO warring with ANY agency, or they will feel the wrath of the almighty when I am done. I said this in roll call and I met with the boys (and girl) on the street one on one to reinforce this. Trust me, they got the picture. I will NOT tolorate what happened like it did between you and your tow drivers. No siree.

Regarding the march (strictly an uninformed outsiders point of view) what if they started at the memorial and ended up north on Michigan or visa versa? You'd still be on the mag mile which in my mind is the most impressive sight of the march. When we turn west it seems like a dull climax to being on Michigan. If it is a little longer in time and distance, so be it. My guys and I have all morning,

Just my opinion.

Brilliant! I proclaim it "DONKEY DAYS"!!!!!!! I am in.

*********************************** Regarding this post...I agree that you do rip on the states attorney's kid every so often and I don't see a reason for it. I've never heard a bad thing about the kid or his old man so why the mud slinging? I worked with a guy who grew up with him and he said he is a regular Chicago neighborhood kid.

The problem in traffic is Austin and Burton. They will arrest any PO any time. They hate us. The County guy that got arrested was sand bagged. The same holds true for the Sgt. That Austin arrested. He was sand bagged too. It has gotten so bad that the old traffic guys are disgusted. There is a solution. If you get stoppped by Austin or Burton, just knock them on their ass. the thirty days will be worth it. Since they are both cowards, they will not resist, but just take the beating. Screw them. Hey, your buds can testify that you were with them at the time of the "alleged" stop.

. . . High school educated with six figure salaries bitching about paying for parking. What an admirable group!

##################################
I do not know where you get your infomation sir but you are misinformed.
Most of us have college educations.
See, one cannot get promoted without a degree.
As for that six figure salary -
I've got 25 yrs. on this job and do not make six figures.
If you go to the FOP website you can pull up the current contract, which will have the salary schedule.
You will see that we do not make what over payed yuppies like you think we do!
Get over yourself and get a life, obviously you wanna be one of us or you wouldn't be hanging around on this blog.
As for paying for parking, why should some clout connected company rake in $15.00 per car for about 4-5 thousand coppers to march in a parade (that takes 2 hours) and honors their dead?

Why don't you just go away and mind YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

I say we all come together for once be united with something and park whereever the fuck we decide to park. If there are 3000 medallions and stickers and signs in the windows in one area who really would have the balls to ticket us? So WHERE ARE WE PARKING?

3/07/2007 10:34:00 AM

I'LL TELL YOU WHO. THOSE FUCKING IDIOT TMA'S AND THOSE VINDICTIVE TRAFFIC AIDS WILL WRITE YOU.

3/07/2007 01:29:00 PM

Yeah, let's back down to the TMA's they don't even have their crack pipe fired up that early on a Sunday! Who the fuck cares about the TMA's??? LAME. Only the TMA Sup's have ticket books retard. So by the time one crack head writes tickets for 3000+ cars the wrath would be upon them.

All the full-time tma's have ticket books these are the former tca's (traffic control aids) Most are older women and would not (for the most part) write a cpd officer. There are exceptions, but they are not breaking their butts to write tickets. O bye the way the full timers don't work on Sunday (because it is double time) So the ones out there for the parade are part-timers no ticket books.
