This is why we like Rue St. Michel so much and wish he could find the time to write more. He takes a venomous rant we posted on the website and actually boils it down to its bare essence that triggered our outburst. Even if you bought us a couple of beers, we still couldn't point to what exactly disgusted and pissed us off about this whole incident, but if you go through some of our archives, you can see where we've really felt passionately about ripping the Department or certain individuals and cut loose some hellacious broadsides.

Here's why SCC is supremely pissed off by the Checkboard Chat, and why you should be too:
This department has problems; major, dysfunctional issues. The system is rife with bosses who's only concern is protecting their own fiefdoms, feathering their own nests and kissing enough ass in order to climb the ladder at HQ. Meritorious promotions are based on "who you know" and not on qualifications. Therefore, those who climb highest up the "food chain" are only good at one thing - using the political system to get where they want to go. Police that are qualified, and who would be good leaders, are passed over in favor of those who have some clout.
While this is not true for all bosses (McCotter, Williams come to mind) 80% would fall within this category.
The foundation of these issues lies with the 80% that are solely interested in maintaining the status quo and not in "keeping it real" and who refuse to shake up the hierarchy within the department. They play politically correct and shmooz the "reverends" and all the other miserable special interest groups who are riddled with delusions of persecution. (visualize Cline crossing the stage, warmly smiling, extending his hand and embracing "reverend" Meeks......)
The Checkerboard Chat encapsulates what is wrong with this department. First they hold themselves up as a "blog" - which they are not. They are nothing more than a side-bar of news bytes. They won't allow a discussion: it is just a motivational session to slap each other on the back. It may help promote the police but it "enables" the dysfunction to continue unabated. A blog allows debate - there is no debate on the Checkerboard.
Secondly, they claim that their highest concern is the "working police officers" - while this is noble; it is nothing more than lip-service. While they do give kudos to those officers who richly deserve it, they do NOT attack the other side of the equation - The asinine promotions, the ridiculous regs that get shoved down our throats, the working coppers who get thrown under a bus out of expediency, the politically correct rules that we're forced to conform with even though our commonsense tells us otherwise.
SCC is justified in being angry. Checkboard is a slap in the face to all police officers: not directly in what items that they include, but in what they omit. It is blatant false advertising.
And for them to grand-stand and cop an attitude about getting called out on the carpet by SCC's blog is minimally unprofessional, and ultimately a strident admission that the basis of their blog is fiction. They know it, and most rand & file know it.
As usual, the department shows its true reactionary colors. SCC put up his first post on 31May2005. It took almost 2 years for the department to "catch up" and start their own.

You hit the nail on the head. This City and Department has no clue what Integrity is.They serve themselves and their clout and occasionally throw a bone. This department needs outside leadership which would be beholden to no one. 30% MERIT not to mention all those SPECIAL CLASSES.
Appointments? Whats the qualifications to be appointed? How can you expect the throops to respect their leaders when how they aquired that spot is suspect. How about a little professionalism just once.
one wonders...how does a person's philosophy change, from being a hard-working cop (?), and as he or she goes up in the ranks, to a supervisor or manager of the sort that we have today? What happens to that person, why don't they remember (or why do they forget) their experiences (assuming that that they had street experiences to begin with)? The CPD has a few exempts with experience and intellectual courage; most of the rest are those who have little or no street experience, and who would not speak out against policies or procedures that are ridiculous on their face. The reason?
SCC You have to put a post up about this, last night in Area 1 they called the Saturation Teams and the Gun Teams to meet and "Wolf Pack". It was totally senseless, there were 12 2 man cars (wasted man power) driving around the DOC and jumping out on 2 or 3 hypes on a corner. The best was that most of these people stopped wouldn't warrant a stop on a really really slow night. Then it was heard that it comes from the Supe's office that it is 2 be done 4 hours a night EVERY night. Senseless absolutely senseless. We even heard tact teams and gang teams doing it as well. I guess if you are involved in things like long term investigations you can throw that out the window because you will need to be down "Wolf Packing". I know it is a great way to get that most coveted 1811 1 bagger arrest.
Heard a rumor from Legal Affairs.. There will be no longer a rank of Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain in the department in the future. The majority of supervisors will be "Supervisor II" which is equivalent in pay to the rank of sergeant. Then, “Supervisor I”.. the most senior of which will be the “Watch Commander” for the districts.
The Mayor has been working on this behind closed doors in an order to get rid of the “D-5” or current Captain pay scale. This is just another way for the City/Daley to save money.
Again I am impressed with the level of intelligent thought displayed by this site.
While I think SCC was justifiably lashed out and vented the anger felt by many of the readers/contributors of this blog. Rue took it one step further boiling this down.
I dont necessarily agree that McCotter or Williams are not clouted members of this department. I would rather work for them than any other DEP SUP's that I have met.

I don't know about you. But most people would rather hire or promote people they know then strangers. That's basically explains it all.

Having worked at HQ's for the past 10 years (yes I am a house mouse for medical reasons only)I've observed how this Department has gone down hill. I attribute the decline to a number of issues, but one more so than any other. The number of women on the job. Most of them, my experience only, seem to want to take the job and take an inside job within a year. Its sickening to watch them act here at 35th Street. During my time here I've seen them get meritoriously promoted for no other reason than telling their oversexed bosses how handsome they look today in their new suit. Give me a break. Rant all you want against this posting but in this mans humble opinion "dollys have been the demise."

i think this is a new issue that should be brought up. Now all tact and gang teams are required everyday to do what the dept calls " wolfpack " through the DOC for four hours, no excuses. This is some of the most ridiculous bullshit this dept has thrown at us. in a place like englewood, they want us to stop arresting people for four hours just so we can throw on a pony show for them. Pretty soon everyone is gonna want to work the desk.

True daley feels he should intervene! Wasn't it partially his idea about the school boards? They voted her OUT daley makes the rules so he can break em! mayor you have to know the rules before you can break the rules it makes it more fun! he never comes to the aid of a copper but this bullshit he rises and speaks or tries to "I duuno not sure i am mayor".
Something to mull over. The 'official' blog; run by Camden and Henry. They claim to be by the real police not the clout heavy. Lets see, Camden is a civilian (apparantly retired CPD)and Henry is a three year veteran detailed to 111. Do you know what unit 111 is?
I'll give you a hint: Phil is assigned to that unit. These are not clout heavy people?
Is Camden's job Shakman exempt? That right there would answer the clout question.
I give Cline kudos for trying to start this blog. But... what is their purpose? Is this for the public and police? How come they never ask open ended questions, such as "how can we improve the department?"
I got a new idea: how about we take 10 two-Assclown cars and start an "Assclown-pack" where we basically ride around Sauganash in our Assclown cars and "jump out" on the little old ladies. Then we will let the little old ladies beat us with their purses, then we will lock them up for battery to an Assclown.

Operation Wolfpack sounds like 009's Operation Six-pack. In fact, the B team can be credited to making 009 a safer place to live. I live in 009 and have seen the difference. They are really changing the crime stats in 009...don't believe me?-go to a CAPS meeting.

As far as Cline ordering the "wolf pack" actions: that is his biggest problem. The Supt. of the CPD has no business getting involved in street action such as this. I like the guy but he's WAY too much of a micro-manager.
To the guy who stated that women had a lot to do with ruining this job, I agree wholeheartedly. Before they came on this job, this job rocked! Bottom line: In over 31 years on the street, I never met one that I would want to go into a bar fight with.
Lastly, to the asshat that supports H.R. 1022: go fuck yourself, you commie! If this passes, it is definitely time to use force to get our government back. It's time to get this country back to only what the Constitution allows, anyway. No activist judges, no Congress trying to do things that the Constitution forbids, no federal government being involved in entitlent programs, no income re-distribution, etc.
It's a shame the Times doesn't an in depth expose on the CPD like it did on the hired trucks. For all the liberal B.S. a few people over there can do good reporting. Just offer total annonymity to any officer who wants to come in and tell their story. The reposrters will have to verify with additonal witnesses and requests for documentation through freedom of information. We need federal intervention. We need a no confidence vote.
