Cue the Violins

Good job by the police:
  • A mentally ill man shot and wounded by Chicago police in the Austin neighborhood Wednesday after he allegedly threatened officers with a knife has died at an area hospital, authorities said tonight.
  • A police roundtable discussion, which includes the officers involved, witnesses and prosecutors, has determined that the officers involved acted "in accordance with state law and departmental guidelines," Bond said.
  • Police spokesman Pat Camden said the man was armed with a knife when officers arrived and refused orders to drop the weapon. He told police, "(Taser) me or kill me," and a sergeant on the scene Tasered the man as he advanced with the knife, Camden said.
  • "He pulled the prongs right out of his chest. It had no effect on him," Camden said. "The sergeant Tasered him a second time because he continued to be menacing. He was advancing on the sergeant with a knife."
"(Taser) me or kill me"? And he pulls the Taser barbs out of his chest? Looks like the citizen already made the decision for the police. Good heads up action by whoever was backing up the sergeant on scene.

Glad to hear the good guys won this one...Hope all the coppers that were involved are OK...
We're willing to bet that once the SunTimes and Tribune talk to the upstanding citizens of Austin the headlines will read: "COPS TORTURE MAN BEFORE EXECUTING HIM"

Be easy on this one, the guy's cousin is the police. I talked to him today, his cousin has had a long battle with mental illness. He has not blamed the police at all. The shots were not enough to kill him, he had swallowed a ton of asprin that caused a heart attack.

Aspirin doesn't cause a heart attack. Ulcer, maybe. Heart attack no. Blood thinner so he bleeds out when he gets shot, maybe. It's just too bad that these officers had to be this guys victims. Yes, victims. In his madness he forced these officers to take his life. They are the true victims here. May God bless them be with them as they cope with all the problems this incident will bring to them. Not the least of which is the lawsuit. Peace.

I represent the firm of Duey, Flucken, & Howe. The police could have shot him in the leg or took the knife out of his hands like on T.V. That is why my clients family is seeking 10 million dollars, but we will settle out of court with the city for 3.8 mil.

Just goes to show, we need more funding to help the mentally ill. And before you all scream at me for being a liberal, think: if the guy had been hospitalized like he should have been, the police wouldn't have had to shoot him. That would be a victory. I don't care if you are justified, it's no fun to kill someone. If it does start to become fun, then YOU sir have become mentally ill yourself. Then hopefully you will have the opportunity to be treated for your mental illnesses.

And monday morning quarterbacking on a police shooting = ASSHOLE. If you were not there (and I doubt everyone who is going to claim they were just to attack me were) STFU. There is alot that goes on in the short time when you have to decide to pull the trigger. Standing in a corner holding a knife and yelling doesnt necessarily mean shoot right away. We all perceive things differently and perceiving a threat is part of the use of force model, we are expected to use our heads. He obviously saw a possibility to end it without deadly force and when that didnt work, he and his backup did what they had to do. The fact that no copper or civilian was hurt is further proof that his decision was right. I imagine that it is not an easy thing to have to take a life and I would sleep alot better if I knew I tried every other option, if I could. How about we try to show some support for each other once in a while, he did an outstanding job and should be commended for it.
For all you internet toughies, I will save you the time of having to post and just agree with you: blah blah Im a pussy, blah blah I am not the real police, blah blah, I know you would have emptied your gun in him, blah blah blah.

You're not only a pussy but a stupid one at that. You got a problem with armchair quarterbacking? I don't. Just call it analysis-and it might save the next coppers life. Maybe someone should have told Vasquez not to buy a home in Shitville. Maybe someone should have told Greg Young not to romance a woman at night parked in Garfield Park. Maybe someone should have told Severin and Rizzato not to stroll across the open field at Division and Sedgwick. Maybe someone should tell you to start listening to people smarter and more experienced than you-like just about everybody.

Sgt DJ good decision and nice work and especially good job backing up the Sgt. This guy had problems but at least had the courtesy to admit to witnesses this was suicide by police. May God rest his troubled soul and bring peace to the officers involved. This wasn't an evil man just a troubled one but 25 did what it had no choice but to do.

To 4:40P.M.
Take your analysis and stick it where the sun does not shine. Where do you get off comparing this shooting to the murders of Vasquez, Young, or even Severin and Rossato? Unless you were there or have first hand knowledge of the incident SHUT UP! Don't publicly second guess things that you may not know nothing about. And yes, I have been involved in more than one shooting in my time on the job, and have been involved in other incidents where I could have shot someone, but didn't.

You sir, I would not even piss on you if you were on fire. You dare to "analyze", yet you sir are the coward. I equate you with these fucking pussies that criticize our government for the past couple of years in successfully defending our citizens against terrorism. You, are of the same breed that sits in a tavern and try to impress the skeezers so you'll get a blow job at 0230. I know for a fact you've never been elbow deep in blood of a copper who bled out. One you have known for a while, and were on first name basis with him and his family and I would never wish this upon anyone. I will never LOWER myself, like the insecure human being you are. If you take issue for calling your bitch ass out, I will be more then willing to have structured interlocution with you at 3501 S. Lowe. Say around 2145hrs or so....ask for the dumb pollock.

An analysis consists of taking the situation as a whole,in detail and weighing the options. I have no problem with a discussion about it. Calling the people involved names and just saying knife=gun is not doing that and is anything but productive. But you would already know that since you are so smart and so experienced. As for your "analysis" of the other officers I will leave that alone as I know little about them, as you also seem to as well.
My point still stands and we still need a little solidarity. We have too many people on this job that only want to be part of the team when they get pulled over and want a break, or when they are bragging in some bar.
Oh, and sorry I left stupid off my list and you had to go through the trouble of posting it.

Cordero and Landando handle alot of police shootings. They're probably two of the best detectives the city has. They handle a lot of police shootings and clear a lot of a good murders. They handled my shooting a few years ago and made me feel at ease while the asshole no nothing bosses tried to fuck everything up. And neither of them is afraid to stand up to the incompetent assholes who run this department. Thanks Bob and Mike, some of us do appreciate what you guys do.
