Weapon Discipline

  • An FBI agent who was killed Thursday in a shootout with three bank robbery suspects might have been shot accidentally by another agent on his stakeout team, the FBI said.

Special Agent Barry Lee Bush, 52, assigned to the Newark FBI office, died after agents confronted three men suspected in a series of armed bank robberies.

"Preliminarily, information suggests the agent may have been fatally wounded as a result of the accidental discharge of another agent's weapon during a dynamic arrest situation," the FBI said in a statement released Thursday night.
Watch yourselves out there. And watch your partners, too. Situational awareness.

Some Justice Department Lawyer's must have come up with that term.

"Dynamic Arrest situation"

I'll have to remember to use it while preparing paper..If I ever mess up!

Sincerely though,Godbless the Special Agent's involved and their families. My prayers are with you.

This might be a case of "friendly fire" and the FBI agent involved claims his gun "accidently" discharged. How does a gun discharge unless YOU pull the trigger?

This unfortunately, will happen from time to time. It's happened here as well

RIP Agent.

Yes, RIP to the brave Agent.

And thanks to all the FBI for your behind the scenes actions against the terrorists; which is why we haven't been hit again.
God knows they wont let me fight the war as a cop in this city.

Thats why the dept. should say "NO" to glocks and springfields. Most Chicago cops don't need a weapon with a light trigger pull. Most are just barely trained with the weapons they carry. 10 to 12 pound trigger pulls for the police. Oh, and cut the K-trigger sig too.

"This might be a case of "friendly fire" and the FBI agent involved claims his gun "accidently" discharged. How does a gun discharge unless YOU pull the trigger?" --- NOT NECESSARILY
You must not be on the job before 1991. Semi-Autos can miss fire without finger on trigger. That is why CPD required DAO (Double Action Only) semi-autos, and we are the only department that requires it.
That happened here also years ago with a traditional semi-auto, copper killed his partner in arrest situation when his semi-auto went off. It happens sadly. God Bless the family.
Lets get these activists out there complaining about the bad guys killing Law Enforcement!

So sad but probability theory makes it unavoidable to happen sometimes.
Can't count the number of times when, getting ready to go thru the door on a warrant, I'd see guns pointing at the back of the point man or myself if I was first in. And THAT part, at least, should be controllable.

Of course he pulled the trigger. But because he didn't want or mean to, it's referred to as an accidental discharge. Next time you go to a hot call, look around you. See how many guys have their fingers on the trigger and how many don't. You will be surprised. BTW, with the upcoming approval of the Blocks and XD's, we can expect to see more of this. I don't like it, but there it is.

8:24-If your talking about the incident in 024 back in 81 or 82, you must have forgotten that the weapon used was a cocked and unlocked Colt .45. It went off when the Officer used it as a sap on an arrestee and discharged striking his partner in the head.

The key phrase is Maintain Discipline in the Use of Fireamrs. Think about it a weapons inspection on wednesdays. You and your fellow officers must be proficient in handling your firearms. You have to be able to trust your fellow officers on your watch and know they can handle their firearms. Our Captain says this to us every week when he inspects our weapons, but I guess it makes sense.

This is the second "frendly fire" agent death in about 4 months. Also, as the police who was once assigned to an FBI task Force, it is you the WORKING POLICE who has kept us safe from any sort of real terrorist threat, not the glory boys. Don't drink any more Kool Aid, the feds need us more than we need them. On our worst day I would put up the working CPD's crime fighting skills against the Feebs 9-5, M-F, investigative work anyday. It is tragic that another good agent has died by the hands of the person that was to ensure his safety. RIP SA Bush, but God bless the members of the CPD who are out there really doing the dirty work.
