Heroes Honored

From Channel 7, coverage of the Police Recognition Ceremony:
  • Chicago police honored dozens of their own Wednesday for their bravery in the line of duty. The top honor, the Distinguished Medal of Honor, was presented to an officer who ended a gunman's deadly rampage last year inside a Chicago law office.

"You can always carry your head high at all times in the city of Chicago. We will not allow one or two or three instances deter the respect that we should have from the public for every member of the Chicago police department and their families," Mayor Richard Daley said.

One by one, some sixty-five men and women crossed the stage to receive the police superintendent's award of valor, each with a different story of heroism.

We received a couple of first hand reports about the mayor's speech. Evidently, it was quite a rip job on the media, taking numerous outlets to task for their one sided coverage of recent months, concentrating solely on single issue stories like the played-to-death Abbate video and studiously ignoring the heroism displayed almost daily by the police.

We have a question - who stole the mayor and what have they done with his body? The mayor sticking up for the Police Department? He hates us. Always has. He's got to be laughing at how the media has taken a few manufactured scandals and completely given his corrupt administration a free pass in looting hundreds of millions in contracts and land sales to other corrupt individuals and companies. Is this some sort of ploy to screw us at contract time? Probably not, as we're going to get screwed anyway. But we figure we have to ask, "What the heck is up?"

In the meantime, go read the Channel 7 story. Nice to see some good news for a change.

If you have ever attended a full council meeting you would know that the little guy ALWAYS denounces the media there. It is a patented speech and the media know it is coming. It has turned into a Hollywood circus pretending that they are the bad guys.

I know someone that knows someone thats in HIS inner circle. He may not like us, but he loathes the media. He really hates to have to explain himself to them. He threw a fit in his hotel room and was throwing things when the "bar" incident(s) broke.Thats when the U.S. olympic city was being selected and he was out of town.

Were the 001 District Officers honored too? Since they took control of the scene found a good safe way in for the swat team and also shot the guy? If not, that award is BULLSHIT. Can anyone tell me if the guys from 001 got the same award?

I'm glad the Mayor recognizes the obvious. A story that was not covered was that while the awards ceremony was taking place four heroes could not be there. All four were shot at and three struck at 19th and Lawndale 2 years ago. The offender was shot several times by the officers. The case finally went to trial, and closing arguements were yesterday during the awards ceremony. God Bless these officers and their families.

It's true. I was there and the mayor did rip on the media. He also had a few nice things to say about the police department in general...WOW. I think the whole room was in shock. Lots of great stories of bravery and good decision making. Congrats to all who were honored !

I was at the ceremony yesterday and was quite surprised to hear Daley's opening remarks. With Ron Majors and Carol Marine sitting right behind him he ripped the media a new asshole. Majors looked unfazed but Marine looked like she was gonna puke.

Eric O'Souji was honored for heroism? That asshole wrote a to-from saying that he thought his partner took "too" much money from people. Could this have anything to do with Starks being his baby's godfather? I'm sure it had nothing to do with him getting on the JTTF without having to speak english. Nothing at all...

i want to congratulate my fellow officers who were honored today. you men and women are true heroes and you all make us proud to be chicago police officers.i know the mayor likes to grand stand how we are heroes, but its funny how a week ago he did a press conference with every police hating community activist and state how we need a ops that reports to him, what a crock because lets be honest if theres an unpopular incident and the "revrends" complain,we will be lynched.lets all remember our single most important mission is that every officer you see in rollcall arrives alive and safe to checkoff,if that happens we win for another day.lets all be honest folks "seatbelt missions","docs" and outdoor roll calls are a bunch of idiotic ideas by a bunch of individuals who cant remember the last time they worked a friday night in a busy district. lets remember some true old school bosses who were "the police" and who were true bosses, gentleman and good people. lt. peter dignan,a man who put away some of the baddest animals in chicago and a man who would follow his troops through the gates of hell, the county is gaining a great boss. tommy folliard,a former a.d.s whoif you were involved in a shooting, this man would be your savior.im sure the officers present and past who know these men would concur. everybody be safe! back each other up! and most important lets go back to the police being a family and lets be good to each other.

No, the 001 Officers did not get the same award as the SWAT guy. He received the Award of Valor and the Police Medal. The guys from 001 received the Award of Valor. I too think the 001 guys should have gotten the Police Medal for what they did. All the SWAT did was pull the trigger.

The guys from 001 did get the Award of Valor, as did the guys from SWAT. The Police Medal went to a SWAT guy for putting the final round in the guy. Don't take away from the guy that got it, it was a tough shot at 45 yards down a hallway with a guy in his arms. The guys from 001 did a great job no question about it, but ask them if they had their vests on?

The two beat officers who were first on the scene, confronted the offender, exchanged gun fire with, then had him pinned down along with other 1st district officers, were given the award of valor. Although it may be no fault of their own,it seems like swat is getting a lot of credit for what the 1st dist had already accomplished(ending the bloddy rampage).

I'm from 011. I remember when this came out over the radio. We responded. Did they ever find out who posted asshole's bail money? It was supposedly from an "anonymous" source. His people tried to say that the police tried to "assasinate" this man. Fuck him. The only thing, in my opinion, that the coppers did wrong was not kill this guy. He was surely trying to kill them.

OFF topic:

Got a parker by the moron mayor' Revenue agents while in an E.R. in a parking space with the signs stating for emergency parking only on the street. The fool wrote on the compiter generated ticket "no parking at any time". The FOP sticker was in plain view.

Please remember these assholes if you come across them in patrol.
They are not the friends of the police.

This city is truly doomed. I would of never thought of leaving it after ten years ago. Now,after retiring soon, moving out of this shit is in the near future.

Good bless the great CPD. I really pity the young guys in the department. Get out now if you can and go to the burbs.

All the SWAT did was pull the trigger.

If you think that is easy, try it sometime.... The Award of Valor is nothing to shake a stick at, not many people get it. Only ONE Police Medal is given out each year (except one year, there were two given out posthumously) so how do you choose it? Even though the sniper was acting on "permission/orders" it takes its toll on you to do that - no matter how right the decision is.
I think it is grossly unfair for anyone to knock him or discredit him for receiving the Police Medal for that. And actually, how often has anyone on our SWAT or whatever actually shot anyone at an HBT? I can't remember them EVER doing it in the last 30 years.

I'm not knocking the SWAT guy. I just think the beat guys from 001 were more deserving of the Police Medal. Just my opinion. And BTW, a 45 yard shot is not that big a deal. A guy who is good with a pistol good have made it.

Is there any truth that the award of valor given to the PO and a Sgt from 189 was suppossed to be awarded to a third officer who was the officer shot at and returned fire. Word is his partner did not even get out of the car, but he and a Sgt are getting this award. If this is true they should be ashamed to accept that award.

Surely you must be thinking a 45 foot shot, not a 45 yard shot. 45 yards equal 135 feet, not easy with a handgun at all, as a matter of fact many people can't even hit the 25 yard line during annual quals. Any yes with a rifle it is easier but not EASY at all. Especially in a dimmly lit hallway with a deranged gunman holding a hostage in his arm with the gun to his head wanting to kill that person. And that gunman having already killed. The swat guy knowing that a carefully placed shot will end that persons life. And having been put in that position, its not as easy as it sounds. Protecting life by taking a life is just, we all know that but having to end a life at your hands is a tough thing no matter what. How ever you look at it, you have taken the life of a son, brother, father, uncle or any other relation. To someone else they were somebody, not just the deranged gunman that you had to terminate. So anyone here can minimize or take away from that one act, but know that he did what he was trained to do and will have to live with that everyday. I do everyday with that actions that I took and I'm ok with that, don't you dare try and take anything away from the act that he did.

Yeah, Daley chewed on the media at the luncheon. And that's exactly the speech he shoulda given weeks ago after the Abbate debacle hit the news. A few bad apples, but a proud and brave police force, instead of forcing a superintendent to resign in response to the media attention. He's a weasel.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. I'm in no way trying to minimize what Nunez did. All I'm saying is IMHO the beat guys did a good job, such a good job, that I think they are more deserving of the Police Medal. They were confronted with a situation that they had seconds to deal with which they did. The SWAT guy however had time to deal with his end of it. Give them all medals if that would make you happy.

What the fuck did Frank Radke ever do, what a fucking joke, makes me want to give my medal of valor and blue star back.
Next year they should have the "It is not my fault," award and they could give it to any of a group of people. Here are few nominees Muaer (He was mentoring Jones and Flagg what a fucking joke) Pick anyone of the next three Tobias, Radke, Gulliford (SOS enough said).
That fucking pig Adrian Stanley walking around the ceremony with her uniform jacket open because she was to fat too fit it and too cheap to buy a new one she is my final nominee (Her best friend was Sledges partner and brought her up to the tact team with Stanley's approval ). Can't to see who wins.
Leadership Award what a FUCKING joke.

I read this blog for quite some time now and never before have I been so disgusted. This thread is to honor those among us who have been involved in tough situations in the line of duty. They have been shot, shot at or otherwise put in jeapordy and for that they were honored by not only the Supt. but the mayor and the entire dept. For those of you who did so to use this thread as an outlet to bash the mayor and denegrate the fact that an officer recieved an award is total bullshit. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Put your hating ass comments in your back pocket and honor those among us who went that extra mile. To all those honored I would just like to extend my deepest gratitude to you all and say thanks for a job well done. Keep up the good work. It was a pleasure to share the stage with you that fine day.

I'd like to first say Congrats to every person who was honored at recent Recognition Ceremony. In regards to F.N. being awarded the police medal, I dont think any person who knows what really happened that day can say that he didn't do a great job. But in awarding him the Police Medal was a slap in the face to the first P.O.'s on the scene. The same 2 officers located the gunman, advised other responding officers not to use the main elevators as they would exit in the gunman's line of sight. One of those same 2 P.O.'s after witnessing the execution of Joe Jackson's 4th victim (35 minutes prior to swat's arrival) and watching him grab and hover over what might be his 5th victim, not thinking about his own safety charged at JJ as he was trying to reload. JJ upon seeing the PO, fired at him, the PO then returned fire while still advancing on JJ. After exchanging gunfire with JJ the PO began negotiating (more like begging for the life of MM and MD) with JJ from apprx 10ft away from JJ and both hostages. This went on for about 30 minutes before our heroes arrived. And what was JJ doing when he was put out of his misery by FN some 55 minutes after his rampage started, concentrating on those 1st two PO's who were still pointing their weapons at him. And yes they were wearing their vest, they know they will get a day, if they dont. So now some you will understand the concerns of many, in awarding FN the Police Medal alone.
