Fire Department Woes

In light of the recent Lieutenants Test Scandal, this really ought to be getting better play in the media. The City can't run a legit test to save it's life. And if it was a legit test, why is the City making private lawyers rich over it?
  • Chicago Fire Commissioner Ray Orozco wants to hire up to 500 new firefighters from the list generated by the city's first firefighters entrance exam in more than a decade.
  • But that hiring could be derailed by an April 20 ruling by U.S. District Judge Joan Gotschall, who entered an injunction requiring the city to hire 132 African-American firefighters. They sued over the 1995 exam, claiming discrimination.
And the taxpayers take it in the shorts again. Is this affecting public safety in some small way? Since we're shorthanded in the number of cops on the street, are we short 500 people in the firehouses, too?

Yes they are short- according to a Fire Captain and a Lt who live on the block. They told me its cheaper to pay OT than it is to hire more Fireman.

You should hear the theories that they have about the current administration. They say things are worse at Streets & San and Water.

Fire guys and one guy from Electricity all had the same thing to say. Privitization! its being phased in slowly almost unnoticeably in some areas.

PLEASE somebody, anybody explain to me how a written test can be discriminatory? If you're to stupid to pass it then you DO NOT deserve the job. What does race have to do with anything? A legitamite response from the race baiters would be appreciated.

Let me see...

According to the SlumTimes "The '95 exam was drafted by an African American with an eye toward diversifying the Fire Department." "When results for minorities were disappointing, the city established a cut-off score of 89 and hired randomly from the top 1,800 "well-qualified" candidates."

A cut-off score was established in order to proceed with the hiring process. This score was 89. (Basically a B in grade school lingo).

Everyone with a 89 or higher were listed as Well-qualified.

So five years go by and then the CFD gets to the "qualified people". Who are probably 75-89 scores.

Then the [unqualified] dumbfucks who scored less than 75 decide to sue and this dumb-ass judge rules in their favor?

What an asshole this judge is. Who the hell gave her power? Let's put more dumb-ass people on the fire department and promote them also.

Wasn't one of the biggest critiques of the County Bldg Fire was that the STUPID LEADERSHIP of the FIRE DEPARTMENT on scene were merit promoted? And that came from the city's own people who investigated the fire. They had dumb people in charge.

Let's sacrifice lives to give a minority a job. Go STARKS for Cortez's job. You are absolutely one of the dumbest human beings I have met. But I'm sure You'll get the job. Only if the public really knew how dumb You really are.

How many more tens of millions of taxpayer dollars will be spent to maintain the political status quo regarding fire and police promotions? Merit promotions are politics at it's very worse. That our Chicago politicians would risk public safety to maintain their jobs is frustrating beyond words. Just once. Just one time would a reporter in our city ask the Mayor this one question. "How do merit promotions in public safety positions(police & fire) benefit the taxpayer?" I suspect they know the answer. Shame on them all for their lack of courage.

Now the City has to hire candidates that are now 12 years older than when they took the test? What are they now, in their mid to late 30's? Think they will be able to climb those stairs? Glad I live on the first floor.

75? 65 was the lowest "qualified" score. Pretty sad, huh? It took about 7 years to go through all the 89+ scores. In 7 years you'd think someone lower on the list would have established an alternate career, or maybe got on a suburban FD, or something other than whining and moaning about "not fair to [insert oppressed minority here]" but then again this is Chicago.

We don't need more firefighter sanyway just a waste of money! we need more paramedics at least they work! Lazy fireman majority are nothing but scabs anyway!

Probably the reason the judge "saw fit" to force the city to hire all those castoffs is the CFD's efforts to keep the CPD as white as possible. I've never seen any city service agency kept well over 60% white as long as the Fire Dept. has been able to be.

In regards to the Fire test; it was decided by the judge that African Americans do not test as well on academic exams.. Therefore it is unfair not to hire them based on the 1995 Fire Fighter exam given to them. This is how the case was decided.

As I recall, JOYCE was at the helm of the CFD when that fiasco occurred at 69 W Washington. Whenever a minority is considered for a top job, people want to shout from the highest mountain here about mediocrity. How soon people forget...

Yes, Joyce was the commisioner at the time of the 69 wet washington fire. However he was not on the fireground running the incident, he was on vacation. ADFC Sal Marquez was the incident Commander and had no qualifications other than the fact he was hispanic. He was up on the fire floor with the line trying to put out the fire. After the fact he told the media he was only the commissioner in training. WTF is that? He was in training!! Also another shining star affirmitive action Lt. was given a direct order to search the stairwells, he chose to take his team and go sit in a ambo. beacuse he said he was feeling weak. It was not until after the 6 bodies were found that the fire dept. found out the the staircases never got checked. Since this piece of shit's incredible failure he has been promoted to the rank of captain passing over many many more qualified white men.

assclown it is though elzie higglebottom a black man who runs that building and a friend of daley who of course he pays off that is why nothing came of any lawsuits as he is daley's guy! He even has huge contracts both at midway and o'hare airports for concession stands that make millions like a black woman maggie daleys friend who has all the no bid contract book stores at the airports does she pay off maggie also?

Fire Department best do nothing job ever created! why do they work only 80 days a year? They do nothing but sit on their asses and wash their cars at the firehouse! There pay should be cut in 1/2 as they all are scabs! more paramedics yes they at least work hard unlike firethugs!

It looks like the City may actually win this one and it could be one small step forward towards ending the reverse racism affecting caucasian employees or future city employees.


City Hall on Friday won a reprieve from an order to hire 132 African-American firefighter candidates who passed a 1995 exam but never were offered jobs.

The ruling means that, for at least the time being, the Daley administration is free to hire from a list of generally younger candidates who passed a subsequent test last year.

U.S. District Judge Joan Gottschall agreed to delay imposition of her hiring order, as well as damages estimated at nearly $28 million, pending the outcome of a city appeal in a 1998 class action case filed on behalf of more than 6,000 black firefighter candidates. Gottschall earlier had ruled that administration of the 1995 test was flawed and discriminatory.

The city has contended the suit was filed too late.

Gottschall agreed with city lawyers Friday that if the appeal proves successful, "the city would have invested resources in processing and training firefighter candidates who have no right to their jobs" and that their hiring could invite lawsuits from successful candidates from last year's exam who were passed over.

If the city loses its appeal, however, the $28 million damage figure would climb to reflect additional lost wages of the 132 candidates whom Gottschall ruled would have been hired if the earlier test were fair.

I have been to Federal Court before Joan Gotschall. Even though she ruled in favor of us and the City, (Yes the city actually took one to Federal Court and won) she is known as being extremely liberal.

Who is that fireman (bodybuilder) who works at the firehaouse at 56th and narragansett who made a bodybuilding injury iod? He is all tanned up kinda dopey to talk to his first name is Timmy I think he makes the firemen look like a bunch of goofs the way he talks about the guys at his house! Why does this guy also drive around with all the windows on his hyundai sport untility tinted so dark you cannot see in, and has 1 rear plate that is covered so no one can see and no front plate? he telss everyone "that is so I can sneak around and report on the guys"!
