Hey, Look! Crime is Up

  • For the second year in a row, the FBI's Uniform Crime Report scheduled to be published Monday shows violent crime on the rise: Overall, violent crimes were up 1.3 percent. Robbery is up 6 percent and homicide is up .3 per cent.
  • The increase in crime is a dramatic reversal from the 1990s when violent crime was at all time lows, dropping 26 percent. The murder rate went down 34 percent. The reduction is credited in part to a federally funded program called C.O.P.S. that added 100,000 police officers to Americas streets.

Democrats in Congress blame the latest crime spike on Bush administration budget cuts in the police hiring program.
Right. It has nothing at all to do with democrats pushing lenient sentencing guidelines or stacking parole boards with bleeding hearts or even the constant attempts to outlaw the death penalty and outlaw guns. Or maybe constantly beating down law enforcement trying to do its job is demoralizing entire generations of police from really caring.

Actually crime took a nose dive in the 90's because the regular assholes just weren't commiting certain crimes, it has nothings to do with CAPS/COPS or anything else. When these dip shits decide to go buck wild again there is nothing left for the police to do, but keep an up to date score card

Jeez, SCC, give your political spouting a rest sometimes! The rise in crime is likely associated with (1) the slowing economy and
(2) our prisons are bursting at (over) capacity. Democrat OR Republican, the average low life simply is not deterred by the aspect of going to jail, or prison.

SCC,
You want a blockbuster story? You want to EXPOSE and Publicize a very hidden side of the media?

The Chicago Tribune loves publishing UNTRUTHS and BIASED BLATANT LIES AND HALF-TRUTHS regarding the CPD.

The Chicago Tribune and the Chicago media love hiding embarassing dirty laundry of their own.

Here is a TRUE great blog topic:

How about the 5 Chicago Tribune employees who have died in the last 18 months under bizzare circumstances.

3 senior level executives (VP's) have committed suicide in the last 18 months. All have jumped from the top floor of the Tribune Tower on N. Michigan Ave.

One line worker and one temporary "hype" employee have died at the Chicago Ave. printing and distribution center. Both under hidden and bizzare circumstances. The Chicago Tribune refused to comment publicly on either incident.

Why hasn't this been publicized?

Why did the Chicago Tribune have all the windows and the doors to the roof permanently secured? Are they concerned about more SUICIDES?

What has gone so astray at the Chicago Tribune?

I would love to hear the editorial board attempt to mitigate the damage from a comprehensive blog on this subject. I can assure you there are many reporters who would love to cover this but CAN'T.

Why doesn't the media cover themselves and EXPOSE their own dirt?

Forget about objective reporting anywhere in the USA. Damage Control is 100% CENSORSHIP on anything concerning the powers to be.

What about Maurice Posley?

Mauric Posley is a Chicago Tribune reporter, who covers the Federal courts. Maurice Posley has a "too cozy" relationship with many attorneys filing Federal civil suits against the Chicago Police Department.

Maurice, how much do Tom and Kevin Peters of Peters & Peters pay you to print your defamation and libel?

As they say if we can win it in the media the City of Chicago will pay. Maurice it is alright, as long as the lawyers keep paying you. Don't ever let ethics and journalistic integrity get in the way of $$$$

I agree with the above poster. I too question how crime can be up.
we not only have cameras that can hear gun shots, but they can spot parking violations as well,(true story, someone downtown is actually calling the zone, telling officers to issue parking citiations, kid you not),we take people off the medical roll in as little as 6 mos. we have scaled back the officers, and supervisors who are working inside with weekends off, (ok, even I got a laugh out of that stat),we are leading the entire solar system in technology,(can you hear me now? chirp, chirp)oh and this just in.
We will now have pink crime scene tape for those crimes in which, the crime did occur, but, hey, he didn't mean to do it. Really.

the reason crime was down in the 80's and 90's was because everybody was in jail. that was the era of aggressive coppers and policing in general. most of these guys were the vietnam vets come home to continue serving the country but doing it in their own hometowns. but of course that didn't fit the agenda so most of those guys are gone and of course the result. more crime.

Right. It's the damned liberals. And the death penalty has done so much to deter crime.

Guns? What about them? Let's see if I can follow your logic here. The US has perhaps the most guns available of any industrialized society--a fact that hasn't detered crime in the least--yet you've managed to come to the remarkable conclusion that MORE guns will lead to a reduction in crime! How fascinating.

It's demographics. It's always demographics. The more 15 to 25-year old males, the more crime. All those other things---policing strategies, parole boards, prisons---have an effect, but the big nation-wide swings in the crime rate are always demographics.

There weren't very many kids at that troublesome age during the 90's, and every politician took credit for the drop in crime. Now that there's more crime, everyone is pointing fingers.

One good thing about the demographic effect is that you can see the crime waves coming. Social scientists noticed the increase in the birth rate years ago, and they've been predicting the resulting increase in crime for more than a decade.

The Boston Globe reports:
A new four-year contract would give Boston police officers a 14 percent pay hike but require them to pay more for health care, city officials said yesterday.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino called the contract, which will be retroactive to July , "a win for both sides."

The contract, which the city and union negotiators agreed on Thursday, would also allow officers to live outside the city after a decade of service , shift about two dozen officers from behind their desks to the streets , and toughen drug testing rules.

Menino said that while the city had sought a lower pay hike, it had settled for 14 percent because the union's 1,400 officers would shoulder an increase in their contribution for health insurance costs, from 10 to 15 percent.

State troopers also pay 15 percent , which is less than the 20 percent most city employees pay, said John Dunlap , the city's director of labor relations .

"That was a big part of what we were seeking," Dunlap said. "Ten to 15 years ago, healthcare was the backwater of labor negotiations, but today, it is at the top of the list of issues."

Yesterday, the terms of the contract were presented to the board of the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association, which represents all officers in the city, and it unanimously voted to present the contract to the union at large June 18 for ratification, according to association president Thomas Nee.

Menino "had issues he valued, and we had issues we valued, and there are always consequences in that give and take," Nee said. "But we're pleased with what we came away with."

Police were among the highest-paid city employees last year, according to city figures released to the Globe earlier this year. Of the 125 highest-paid employees, all but one were police officers. In 2006, the average uniformed police officer made $113,617 , including $35,600 in detail and overtime.

#1 Crime spiked after the shit hit the fan in SOS. Also after the developement of the DOC. What ever happened to letting the police be the police? Hmmm. Oh , yeah ACLU and Da Mare. Any bosses out there with any more bright ideas? Bring back D/C arrests! Dump the Gang dispersals notices and lock them up for mob action.
#2 Problems with not getting lunch or time off? Instead of coding the calls, start making arrests whenever possible. (tie the car up on arrests) By doing this, after a while (maybe 2 to 3 months or a lot sooner), the calls will backlog and supervisors will complain about answering jobs. This might also include field LT's. Do this long enough; the supe's will complain (shit will finally roll back up hill) and more officers will be sent back to districts. This will also reduce the number of cops in the "special units" TRU, SOS, Saturation, etc... More police in the districts =(equals) more time for lunches, more time off and happier police. Play their game, but make it work for you.

-----------

Is this true?

Oh wait. I don't care if it is or not, ruin thier lives. Trib reporters/editors hate cops. Take photos of the funerals, tell thier insurance providers not to pay out.

Why don't you stop using old mafia movie lines to refute other writters? The "shine box" is from Goodfellas. Come up with something original, scc and stop being such a baby everytime someone disagrees with you. You talk shit about everybody but sure can't stand when someone says something about you.

We like the shine box comment because it shows utter contempt for the recipient of the barb.

We actually don't talk shit about everyone or we'd never have any readers. We publish people who disagree with us constantly and respond civilly or good humor. We allow dozens if not more slams on us than we dish out. But this particular asshat has been annoying us incessantly for a bit. So we smacked him around. It was deserved.

I say it's all about the drug trade. 10 years ago you couldn't turn around without seeing 5 or 10 hypes driving around the west side "shopping". If you drove down Chicago ave, you would be offered anything you wanted on any corner. It's a little different now, there is still a drug trade but not like it was, these guys want to make money somehow. So, robberies, burglaries, thefts and the relatively new identity theft rings are up.The way I see it, if some jerk gets locked up for 10 years, he should do the 10 years.I always read the criminal histories of the people I locked up while in court, and guess what,if the guy was doing the time he was sentenced to I would never have locked him up. Instead these guys get time off for good behavior and are back on the street picking up more cases. This is insanity, why do we allow this.Keep them in prison for thier full term, crime will plumet.

TO
(shit will finally roll back up hill) and more officers will be sent back to districts. This will also reduce the number of cops in the "special units" TRU, SOS, Saturation, etc... More police in the districts =(equals) more time for lunches, more time off and happier police. Play their game, but make it work for you.

6/03/2007 03:42:00 PM

Hey young guy.

1) The dispersals were the result of a court decision. The Corp. counsel came up with the
dispersals to pass judicial scrutiny.

2) The crap you claim
that will roll up hill,
will roll back faster.
The bosses will just watch you closer, time
to respond to jobs, how
long you take in station.
etc.
Then the nitpicking SPARS
will follow.

Don't worry about what
everyone else is doing.
Take care of your business and you will
have less stress.

Guess it is ok to go through life "drunk and stupid" but if your a boss you can drive drunk, park anywhere and do anything with no repercussions right? Alert the media about the party have them bring cameras out so they can highlight the double standard of management vs. workers!

"It has nothing at all to do with democrats pushing lenient sentencing guidelines or stacking parole boards with bleeding hearts or even the constant attempts to outlaw the death penalty and outlaw guns"--SCC

Right. It's the damned liberals. And the death penalty has done so much to deter crime.

It is not meant to deter crime it is the ultimate cure for recidivism.

The savages we deal with aren't smart enough to heed a deterent--they hang on street corners doing a bullet magnet impersonation most of their lives

Guns? What about them? Let's see if I can follow your logic here. The US has perhaps the most guns available of any industrialized society--a fact that hasn't detered crime in the least--yet you've managed to come to the remarkable conclusion that MORE guns will lead to a reduction in crime! How fascinating.

What is fascinating is your willful ignorance. More guns in the right hands do deter crime. If Joe Jagoff thought there was the possibility of getting a 9mm facial from the potential victim he would be far less likel,y to attempt to victimize citizens.

6/03/2007 09:20:00 AM"

That's funny, guns sure deterred Arthur Buford here when the victim of his attempted armed robbery shot him to death. But then here in NE Ohio, people not only aren't expected to be willing victims of violent crime, we have the means to defend ourselves. In Apartheid Chicago, if you aren't DICK Daley, an alderman or a cop, you might as well put a gun in your own mouth as expect the police to "protect" you. They sometimes have no desire. They usually have no ability. They almost NEVER have a legal duty.

So what's your solution? The game preserve formula. The "antelope" (citizens) just have to bunch together and hope that the "lions" or "crocodiles" (the criminals) get the old, slow or young instead of you. But then that's what Apartheid Chicago (especially the Black community) really is, a big game preserve where the "preserve managers" (politicians) and "game wardens" (police)consider a few dead "antelope" merely a cost of doing business.

okay, these stats aren't totally accurate. They do not represent multiple people shot in one incident, nor do they represent double or triple homicides. They are merely just one noted incident per incident. Hope that makes sense:

13may07 - 26may07
district - agg bat gun - homicides

1 central - 0 - 2
2 wentworth - 20 - 5
3 grandcrossing - 43 - 9
4 south chicago - 21 - 8 5 calumet - 22 - 13 6 grenshaw - 30 - 11 7 englewood - 44 - 11 8 chicago lawn - 40 - 4 9 deering - 24 - 9 10 ogden - 26 - 8 11 harrison - 34 - 15 12 monroe - 12 - 2 13 wood - 7 - 2
14 shakespeare - 13 - 3 15 austin - 24 - 6 16 jefferson park - 2 - 1 17 albany park - 8 - 2
18 near north - 8 - 1

Only 130 homicide incidents, does not include double/triple homicides. The number is probably around 150.
