Mark Brown - The Rest of the Answers

A week ago, Mark Brown published three scenarios from the upcoming Lieutenants re-test.

We, along with a number of our readers took exception to Brown's headline - "Lieutenant's Exam Tests Our Faith in Cops" - as it seems to imply cops had anything at all to do with drafting the test, administering the test or choosing the company that bungled this from the start. It certainly appears that Brown is deflecting blame from the City Administration (Mayor) in whose lap this entire mess should be resting.

Wednesday, Brown published the other four scenarios.

This test should be cancelled immediately. There is no way in hell that this tests any body's ability to think on their feet if they have each and every scenario in hand before the test. Everyone already knows that the truly clout heavy didn't even have to show up for the second portion of the test. All they had to do was pass part one to be considered by the "meri-clout-orious" board.

Do we really need any more mediocrity in the supervisory ranks? Because that is exactly where we're headed - again.

SCC, you really shouldn't say that "only the clout heavy" don't have to appear for the second half.
With Cline's departure imminent, those who have been perceived to be "clout heavy" may no longer fit in that catagory. It will have to keep until the next Supt. is put in place to see who the NEW "clout heavy" people are. Until that time, nobody, and I mean NOBODY is guaranteed a Meritorious "shoe in."
Even if you are by some chance submitted for Meritorious consideration, your "packet" will have to compete with ALL OF THE OTHERS that lie about on that table in front of the Meritorious Selection Board, and THAT is where the real haggling begins! Lots of people started off strong, only to have their nomination lost in an ever growing pile of "shouldas." I would say to anyone who wants the promotion badly enough to show up and take this "phase II" over. It's not costing anything except some more time, and I'm sure there will be some who will get promoted who likely weren't in the running before this snafu.

From reading this article (I didn't see the first one) he had to be fed these questions from an insider because they are pretty much on the money.

I guess this is what happens when "the chosen ones" can't pass a test.

Well, ther goes my furlo...again!

Why did Cline choose the most demoralizing solution possible to this problem? It makes the Police Department look like it is being run by daughter’s first grade classmates…actually, never mind, they too would realize it is not fair to give the same test twice when the object of the test is to test your ability to think on your feet.

Crazy but if the test questions are out there how can you administer the same test again? it is the city and who leaked to mark brown? Had to be a white shirt right? They are even getting pissed with all the shit this city pulls that is corrupt!

I didn't see any problem with Brown's article. SCC, I think your going a little overboard with the comments on Brown.

I do agree the test should be canceled. This test with all the questions out in the open for everyone to practice is not really a test. The Sgts who have better personalities r going to look and do better. You can have a Sgt who knows what he or she is doing but is not personable and doesn't have kiss ass skills. This test hurts them.

Merit promotions r in general not the most clout heavy. There r plenty of boses out there who have clout on top of clout that have never made a merit promotion. If you have enough clout you know all the test questions before the test and pass with flying colors making it look you studied. Merit is for the dumb asses who can't pass a test even when there given the questions and answers befor the test. There is always 1 or 2 merits that deserve their promotion. They may have had to kiss ass as part of the merit but r still good coppers.

Whats so suprising here? "They" already know who the next Lt's are going to be.

Just look at the current sgt's and who their clout is, relations, dads worked with what exempts as PO's in Tac or my favorite of all... Cowardly PO's wife babysits for an exempts young children and then PO is rewarded for his wifes actions with a white shirt and Cheverons! This job is so legit

If you bums hate Milt so much, you should hope he gets promoted. Maybe then you will get a replacement tact Sgt. who won't make you turn off the TV and get your asses out on the street, where you belong. Be careful what you wish for, whiners. A strong wind could blow through that tact office, and bring a truckload of changes with it, starting with your tact lt., moving all the way down to the tact secretary.

true

most of the people are made before the test even starts. because of the federal monitor, merit now has to be somewhat legit, so the way they get their people in are with "secret" study groups given by subject matter experts. one such group was given by a certain supervisor in a northside district by invitation only. god help whichever district gets these select few as lts, they can barely survive as sgts (hint, they're all female). these chosen ones are also the ones that are complaining the loudest about the retest, because they will lose the upper hand. the fix is in. 20 and out seems to be the way to go

As a non-merit supervisior I would welcome a list of the merit promotions. it would be great to know which of my co-workers are actually qualified and which are clout. Also it would put to rest any speculation and rumours about those that made it by studying.
