Gee, imagine that. A trained officer, veteran of dozen or more years on the streets, made the right decision that saved his life and the lives of his partners and even an ungrateful public:
As ministers and activists called Thursday for a federal investigation of Chicago Police about this week's fatal shooting of a teen in North Lawndale, new details emerged challenging early reports about how the victim was shot.
An autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner's office ruled that Aaron Harrison died from a gunshot wound to his back, a point that residents have seized on as they have protested the shooting.
But on Thursday, a police source said Harrison, 18, was struck at the top of his left shoulder, not in the back. This is consistent with the police version of the Monday night shooting that Harrison turned a weapon on police before he was shot, the source said.
Of course, that didn't stop Sharpton from grandstanding:
- The Reverend Al Sharpton led a rally Friday night to protest police brutality. Some West Side residents who were at the rally said Chicago Police were out of line when an officer shot and killed Aaron Harrison earlier this week.
Sharpton, who as far as we can tell, holds no medical degree of any kind, was approximately 1,000 miles from the scene of the shooting, and has no training whatsoever in the field of forensic crime scene reconstruction, has decided the police were out of line? And what's Sharpton's main claim to fame? Oh yeah, supporting a false claim of abduction and rape that resulted in a massive libel judgment against him and as an unindicted instigator of the Crown Heights riots that resulted in a man being beaten to death. Nice credentials.

We've been going over the Officer Battery Stats released by the Department, and unless we're reading them incorrectly, the 011 District has led the city in "Batteries to Police" in something like 6 of the past 7 years, so it would seem that the community is already "going after" the police. Hmmm.

When the crowd (now mob) inched closer and kicked the squad car doors, they radioed for assist cars to help them leave the area. Assist units came and the units all left the area. ADS Williams proceeded to call the beat car into 011 where they were dressed down for for driving by the protest and inciting them. The beat car then responded by informing the ADS that no one had bothered to tell them that their was going to be a protest of 400-500 people on their beat, and that ramming their car into a crowd to escape it would have looked bad in front of the dozen flashing cameras. When asked what his plan was for the situation he replied "Well, we're just wingin' it." It's great to see how the dissemination of information travels from the brass to the boys and girls in blue who are actually working on these streets which are at the best of times barely civilized. We've all seen how a crowd can go from peaceful to nuclear in a heartbeat and thankfully the officers went home safe. Morale is at an all time low mostly because we don't have a single white shirt standing up and telling the city about the job we do and the area where we work. Remember THE BRASS DOES NOT HAVE YOUR BACK.

Working in 011 has never been easy. There has always been one thing or another going on which makes the "citizens" hate us even more. Why is the Department painting itself into a corner by distinguishing whether the offender was "shot in the back" versus "shot in the shoulder?"
According to the Use of Force Model, lethal force is either justified or not. If you attempt to escape by using a deadly weapon, the police are justified in shooting you in the back, shoulder, head, ass, and may even run you down with a squad car. The law affords officers the right to protect themselves by use of lethal force in this circumstance.
By drawing meaningless distinctions about where the bullet penetrated the offender, the Department is myopically engaging in a debate that will not only fail to appease the current cadre of race baiting activists (after all, they thrive on controversy and have no interest in ascertaining truth), but will result in further crowd incitement the next time this occurs when the bullet may strike the lower back of a fleeing offender. Moreover, by engaging in these meaningless distinctions, the Department is already hanging out to dry the next officer that finds him/herself in this situation.
Why doesn't the Department spokeman say it loud and clear - if you try to escape arrest by use of a firearm you risk being shot?
The lack of Department leadership in managing this incident is discouraging and unnecessarily makes our job more difficult.

Someone in the media needs a little enlightenment on the Deadly Force Policy. If somebody points a gun at you and then attempts to make good their escape while still holding that gun, you have every legal right and duty to shoot that person. Yes dear "friends" in the media, you can shoot someone in the back. What are you going to do, wait for them to turn around, and either point the gun at you again or shoot at you first?
We have an obligation to protect the lives of all people in the City of Chicago. If somebody decides to bring a firearm into the mix, we have the obligation to defeat this threat. We also have the obligation to return home to our families. The playing field is not even, we are required to win this confrontation. You point a gun at the police, or shoot at the police, you have every expectation that you will be shot. There should be no surprises here folks.
And as for these "reverends" who are backing these gang bangers and murderers...shame on you! You have the obligation to stand up for the law abiding congregation in your areas, and yet to choose to bask in the media limelight for the scum that scourge your very streets. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Help the good people in your communities rid their streets of this vermin. Make these communities safe again for the children that have to sleep on the floors of their own homes for fear of receiving a stray bullet; or the folks that have to stay in their homes like prisoners, in fear of being accosted on their own streets. That is where you efforts need to be placed.

It's pretty clear: A peace officer is justified in the use of deadly force if he reasonably believes that deadly force is necessary to prevent a person to be arrested from escaping, and the person to be arrested is escaping by use of a deadly weapon.

I call for an investigation into the family of that offender to see what they did for the 18 years of his life that made him feel that the only way for him to survive was to carry a gun, sell drugs and run from the Police. Watch your ass when and If you drive through the town of St. John Indiana (hop skip and a jump from Chicago). A certain Lt. of the St. John Police Department is on a rampage for traffic violators (including off duty police). It's alleged that a family member of his was seriously injured by a speeding driver and ever since then the Lt. has been on a rampage and is taking his anger he has for that one particular driver out on everybody else (including any off duty police officers).
He recently wrote an off duty East Chicago Indiana Police Officer a DUI who had just a couple in him and was driving fine and then the following week he wrote an off duty Calumet City Illinois Police Officer a speeding ticket going 12 over the limit. If he does this with Police Officers, I can only imagine how ticket crazed he would be with an average John Q citizen. I hear when he pulls you over he's instantly in an enraged/crazed state of mind and is an extremely unstable person screaming at the top of his lungs using profanity. He'll also question you about being armed off duty (which now you are totally justified) but make sure you have your credentials on you.
Remember - don't judge every other St. John Indiana officer for the actions of one of their officers/supervisors but just be forewarned and be careful in case you get stopped by the CRAZY LT...

What I find unjust and unethical is the subjectivity of the media and what they report. I find it hard to believe that there aren't people of character on the west side who applaud what the police are doing and the actions they take. But the media will never write their stories or put them on camera. Ever put a camera on a child? We all have at one time or another. They act like they should, like kids, clowning around, making faces, saying stupid stuff. It's no different here except, the media, both in print and television make money on these fools acting up. No one wants to see a senior citizen on TV or reading their story on how happy they are to see the police chasing these thugs. Our supporters are there, but they will be silenced by the media's failure to cover the truth. See the media when covering these disturbances, pray that violence breaks out so they have the coverage and can win awards for news reporting. Lets face it mayhem, violence and blood sells. Who wants to see a peaceful demonstration...zzzzzz? Remember the Eagles tune, "give em dirty laundry".
I just heard the Bud Biliken mess was just that, a mess. But I guarantee the media will report it as a wonderful family day with no problems, while fights,shots fired and 10-1's abound.
Wait, you'll see the wonderful pictures in the Sunday papers, of smiling kids and families having a picnic,(that's before the thugs ran through the park and turned over tables) but you'll never see pictures of this or how many lost children (free baby sitting)there were or of the mayhem.

I've said it before, I'll repeat it here. Where are the aldermen and state representatives like Rugai, Madigan and others who list the names of police on their campaign literature? They are endorsed and supported by the FOP, sometimes with financial backing. When will a group of these politicians come together and speak up for the police? Especially on a good justifiable shooting. Remember this come election time. Shame on you if you support these alleged police supporters with a sign in your lawn or your name on their literature. They don't support us. When was the last time a pension bill like the 80/20 was passed? We'll be waiting two years plus and have to fight for a raise that won't keep us up with inflation. Two guns recovered both offenders in custody! This all occured in the alley at 1100 S. One of the big parts of this job is knowing the difference between a lawful order ans an unlawful order. Bosses on the job cannot tell you not to enforce the law. Car calling for help, they cannot tell you not to go. You may get shot thru the grease but you will come out ok. I personally like Williams but that bluetooth has to go, very unprofessional. WHY IS THAT? People who are arrested in California have their latest MUG SHOT displayed in the news. Here in Chicago, all we see is a pic of the thug from his pre-teen days. Why doesn't the CPD allow for the mug shots to be released to the media, SCC? Maybe you should start a post on that.

That is not the point.
SCC is saying that the shooting was "justified" because the young man was shot in the shoulder and not the back, based on a "source" from the police department.
All I am saying is that the coroner's office has a lot less reason to lie about it than the police "source" does.
Was it justified? Maybe... but don't try to prove this by pointing to an anonymous source claiming that the coroner was wrong.
