- If Mayor Daley is serious about bridging the gap between the Chicago Police Department and African-American communities, he need look no further than interim Police Supt. Dana Starks.
Here's why:
When someone in the police ranks starts a smear campaign against a fellow officer, it's a good indication the old guard feels threatened.
So when Starks' name began popping up in a gossip column linked to salacious items, it was clear to me that someone is trying to bump him out of a contest he hasn't even entered.
It devolves from there. Needless to say, Mary quotes support coming from the nation of islam, "father" Phleger, "reverend" Jakes, "reverend" Sharpton, " and what Mary calls "a diverse group of community activists," by which we can only conclude she means the vice lord nation.
Ain't that something? The play reverends, race baiters and vice lords get mainstream media coverage to help pick our next Superintendent.

I read the article, and I believe it to be unprofessional of the writer to include a quote by Sharpton. He is not invloved here in Chicago, and his quote gives the impression that he and Starks are old buddies.

you would think that after being given almost a decade to pursue (complete) his higher education, while mandating and demoting others who haven't completed theirs either, he could at least take the time to finish a degree somewhere. what kind of example is he setting?

and the special operations switch was an error. another indication that he has no clue of what's really going on. he was pressured (caught with his pants down) at the city council meeting and had no answer, other than "they need more supervision."
to interim supt. starks: every car in s.o.s. is g.p.s. equipped, the cars must stay in their little doc box, inspectors all over their asses, and they are being micromanaged already. how much more supervision do you want. if it is true that you want them to have more supervision, publish the manpower before and after the change you made and prove you are a man of your word. show us the additional supervision you are placing in that unit!!!!!
No matter what Mary Mitchell claims, and no matter how much community support Dana gets, he will not be made Superintendent. There are two reasons for this, aside form the fact that he has zero qualifications.
First and foremost, he is an avowed racist. He hates anyone who is not Black. He has made no bones about his feelings either, so he is stupid to boot.
Secondly, he is a backstabber. He stabbed Maurer, Cline, Grau, and a host of others in the back. He even stabbed the Mayor a few times, and while doing so, he violated Department policies, procedures, and rules. No one trusts him in the Department or City Hall.
Lastly, if morale is bad now, it will only get worse. King Richard knows this. Say what you want about him hating us, but the last thing he needs is a whole police department with piss poor morale. Even he is smart enough to know that he would be doomed. There sould be mini and major scandals all over the place.
If, by some minescule chance, Dana should get the top spot, he will be legless. The First Deputy will run the Department while Dana collects a pay check for doing nothing. It is what he has done his whole career.
Cline was a clown in his own right, destroying morale by quadruple promoting his buddies etc.
However, Dana is a complete embarrassment. We are supposed to look up to our leaders and try to live an unblemished life? This guy is so ghetto that even Daley should be embarrassed having him represent the Chicago Police Department. This guy has babies by several different mamas with a paternity suit pending. Our Sergeants and Lieutenants are required to have college and this mope only has a G.E.D. Gee, I wonder why morale is in the toilet?
From now on we should just refer to Mary Mitchell as MOPE-rah.
Lets face it, Chicago needs a police superintendant recruited from outside of the midwest who will be allowed to bring in his own guys/gals to fill the top ten exempt rank spots. He also needs to be given the resources to hire more cops to beef up the patrol division and IAD. The new boss also needs to have latitude to negotiate with the FOP to address the pimping of the medical roll, and to offer monetary and other professional incentives to recruit the very best officers to become FTO's. More importantly to improve morale on the job, the new boss needs to be able to develop promotional exams using outside experts who can create exams that are relevant to police management in Chicago, and are not given to alderman and other politicos for advance review who will help out their knuclehead pals. If the job has legit exams there will be no need for race norming, affirmative action or other sorts of patronage.

The federal magistrate has finally made a decision on the FLSA lawsuit. The city has lost this one!! The FOP and PBPA should soon have some more information on it on their sites. In the new contracts it will state the department MUST grant you “time-due” as long as you put a slip in a reasonable amount of time, say 48 hours.
The city argued that they ARE VERY SHORT ON MANPOWER and can not grant time due so easily. HOWEVER - – Other bosses in the department bullshit that we have 13,500 sworn officers. SO . . What’s the REAL truth Mr. City Attorney???

This is a good one. How does this happen? Off-duty cop on views a homicide in the 4500 blk of north Hazel (023 Dist.) Offender jumps back into the car and flees from the scene, northbound Hazel to eastbout Wilson to southbound LSD. ODPO contacts OEMC and follows the offender's car until he looses him in the 1200 blk of south LSD. One of two things happen; 1. someone at OEMC forgets to dispatch the call or 2. the call is dispatched and no one in 023, 018, 001, traffic or CW unit is able to intercept this car. It was also 0440 HRS, how busy are any of those dist/units? Is this a manpower issue? Or just bad police work?
They put that call on zone 5 but no one could find the cab. I was working and then they had trouble calling back the o/dpo. Wasn't sure of the time frame between call and dispatch though.
say what you want but under starks tenure as supt., he has had several dept award ceremonies...including two ceremonies scheduled within two days of each other at the end of this month/Sept......how many ceremonies did cline have in the last two years....the basic dept awards are backed up over two years... great for morale cline.....i guess he was too busy with the memorial.
I'm sorry about not sticking to the subject, but I thought this was notable from the Southtown news today. This is a direct result of t having the police be everything except for what we are, the police. We have to be educated, we have to be cordial, we have to be sensitive, we have to avoid trouble, but to be jumped on by some thugs. When we were allowed to be Englewood Rangers in the day, no thug would even think about jumping a coppper in uniform and walk away unbruised.

Three teenagers are in custody this afternoon after they allegedly attacked and injured a Chicago police officer at an Englewood gas station.
The Englewood District officer, who was in uniform, pulled over after spotting three teens, who appeared to be of school age, to investigate possible truancy about 10 a.m. at a gas station near 67th and Halsted streets, Englewood District Lt. Robert Duewerth said.
The teens, ages 17 and 18, apparently figured it was three against one and jumped the officer, Duewerth said.
Several customers at the gas station saw the assault.
The teens had the officer pinned on the ground, Duewerth said.
The officer suffered minor injuries and the three teens were arrested. Charges are expected against at least one later Tuesday, Duewerth said.
Police have not yet confirmed if the teens were high school students.
Didn't see this is the Sun-Times.

What has happened to the Police Department and Law Enforcement agencies in the State of Illinois.
The fact that an Unlawful Restraint, Reckless Conduct etc was allowed to happen in the presence of a Deputy Sup, 2 Commanders, a few LT's, Lots of Sgts, and a plethura of blue shirts was amazing to me.
When about 150 or so wheelchairs and support people are allowed to block all means of egress of the State of Illinois building and nothing is done.

channel 5 at 10pm news had a segment on tension from the black community towards cpd regarding recent police involved shootings. big meeting but police were not welcome. they showed an alleged educated black man speaking. he said "mayor daley aintz having no olympics here in chicago if the black man keepsa gettn beat and shot by da po po" end quotes. that's classic.
you don't see the black community doing anything about all this black crime and black on black shootings and murders but they sure jump quick when their is a black banger shot by the police.
