Teachers Approve Contract

The speculation in some circles, including our comments section, was that this was far from a done deal and there might be an unpleasant surprise in store for the mayor.

Evidently, the surprise never materialized, but it was close:
  • Members of the Chicago Teachers Union have ratified a new, five-year contract.

More than 11,700 teachers voted for the deal, while fewer than 9,000 voted against it. There are still 1,900 votes needing verification.

The deal includes annual four percent salary increases and a three-year freeze on healthcare costs.
The "fewer than 9,000" turned out to be about 8,900. So a spread of about 2,800 means a mere 1,400 votes could have turned this thing. Maybe less once the 1,900 provisional votes are tallied. The mayor is striving for labor peace in anticipation of the Olympics bid, but as close as this was, and the Teamsters recent failure to ratify their 10 year contract offer hint at a bunch of issues just below the surface, waiting to erupt.

Why shouldn't the teachers ratify this contract? They got a good deal.

Unfortunately residency is not going to go away. Daley will never allow it, and there is no guarantee that who ever is next will give it to us. Having said that, we need to go after things that we can get such as an end to the 6 day week, a decent monetary raise that will allow people such as your self to buy a house in this overpriced city, and a cap on what we are paying for health care.

================================

You won't be able to do that in very many places right now. Places like Harvard, Woodstock, Montgomery, any place you would like to live and afford it is way out of line and too far to commute economically or effectivly.

Forget about Arlington Heights, Palatine, Naperville, Northbrook, Mundelein and the Round Lakes, Oly Fields, Tinley, Palos, their housing is overvalued more than anything in a desirable area of Chicago. Any place outside the city with affordable housing is either way too far out to even consider or in a shit area like Hoffman Estates,Rolling Ghettoes, Aurora, Glendale Heights or Calumet Park.

The housing market needs to correct itself, not only in Chicago proper but throughout the 6 county area and that will take a year or so. The whole country is taking a hit.

Also remember the taxes in Cook County outside the city, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry are very, very high on the assessed valuation of the property.

Also remember you get nickeled and dimed much more in the suburbs than you do in the city.

Quit leasing the Hot Mustang or huge Yukon, going on vacations to the Carribean, eating out often and save your money if you want to afford a house.

Mortgages are going to be hard to come by unless you have little debt, have at least 20% to put down and have pretty good credit. The days of getting a loan with a 600 credit score are over.

The city will never give up residency to those who are contractally obligated. The CTU and CTA don't have it for grandfather'd in members, new hires have to live in the city.

Policemen's pay and benefits are pretty fucking good compared to the private sector. Try getting OT at the end of 8 hours instead of after 40 hours. See what private sector people pay for health insurance--that's if they can get it. What about all the gimme's such as uniform money, duty availablity and special employment which is much more abundant than when I came on.

Actually the teachers and prison guards should join together to form a new union. A perfect match in Chicago.

I just found out what the mayor offered the laborers in Streets and Sans.....16% over 10 years. And the mayor thinks that is fair? Just wait he'll offer Police and Fire the same. 1.6% each year is a joke!

I just hope we stand up for what is right!

Spoken like a typical suck ass. So I should quit if I dont like the direction the city is going??? You must be a spineless coward that says yes to the BOSS. I have 10 years on and believe me this city will not get one drop of work from me. I sit around for 8 hours blowing off jobs and laughing all the way to the bank. I collect extra checks for doing nothing and it feels great. The best part about this is that I hit the medical at least 3 times are year, its free days off!!!! Im a dog woof woof and believe me Im proud of it. This isnt a job to be proud of, its a pay check to keep my family happy. So go save the world super hero and be that working police you are so fond of throwing around, I will be sitting here getting event numbers and making my money. Anybody that works on this job is a chump!

its guys like this that deserve a "code red" from his co-workers.

its guys like this that when he or a family member is a victim of a crime, he'll be demanding everyone to go out of their way cause "im on the job too" and will be bitching at the "D" unit for progress "how come u dont have an offender in custody" blah blah. but never lifted a finger to help a real victim in his life.

u sir are a chicken shit coward with no honor. we certainly dont need guys like you making it harder than it is, so do us all a favor and leave.

no i dont have a year and a half on the job i have 10. you took an oath so follow it.

Yea, that's the spirit! "Take whatever the City gives you and shaddup about it" It's visionaries like YOU who should be leading the F.O.P. Kindly give your name and I will be sure to vote for you next election!

Your attitude is the reason this city and the job are going to shit. Do you job and be the police. If you are just going to do nothing for eight hours a day you should just eat your gun because you are worthless! I hope when somebody in your family calls the police the responding officer blows off the job because you will be the first to bitch about that do nothing officer, and I hope you remember the comment you just posted. Its people like you that make this job harder for the people that actually work. You have already quit mentally so you should just why dont you leave the department and try to find a better job then this and give your spot to somebody that actually takes pride in what they do. yOU DONT DESERVE THIS JOB. YOU ARE SUCH A PIECE OF SHIT, CRY BABY, DO NOTHING BITCH!!!!!!!!

The word "coward" is used a lot on this blog. I wonder how many on here would ever have the balls to use it to a persons face. None, I imagine.

i wish someone who wants to say something to my face would actually have the "balls" to say it to my face. some bosses are the real "cowards", and we all know who they are. talk behind everyone's back, but will never say it to their face. no why,? they'll get their ass kicked!!!!!

It was not an overwhelming victory. 8,900 people were pissed off enough to vote no (45%?). And when they see their co-pays go up in the middle of the contract, they will all be crying, just like the FOP did to us.

We will never see residency go away until state lawmakers change the law. It's a state law, not a city law. Thank's to the Daley family, were screwed forever.

There is a reason that there is no news about our contract.
the FOP and the city had a brief meeting regarding the contract. The city wants the CPD to have their medical insurance co-mingled/included with other city workers. FOP response - BLOW ME!
That's pretty much, from what I understand. We will not see a contract for at least 2 years, but that's normal. I've been informed that the FOP will not entertain a 10 year contract.
Next meeting with the city and FOP is not for a few months.
Next general meeting is 18 SEP 07, at noon.
