- Maybe the reason that police are cleared in almost 100% of the shootings is because they broke no law, violated no policy and actually are trained professionals with guns who shoot better than those shooting at them.
The round table is a preliminary investigation. Always has been. And it's sole purpose is to determine if rules were followed. It attributes no guilt or innocence as that is the purview of the courts. It's a purely Administrative hearing and as all questions are compelled to be answered, none of it is admissible in any court of law.

I cancelled my subscription to the Trib the other day. I feel like a lowlife now because the only person i am hurting is the poor delivery guy. I use to tip him 20$ this time of the year. Feels better to read this nonsense online now and not have to pay for it.
Hey SCC, I was going south bound on LSD heading to traffic court and guess what i was next to in the bumper to bumper traffic. A car with Il lic plate README, Yes it was the ugly MOP-RAH driving her Mini jaguar. That dufuss does not know that she is driving a glorified Ford Taurus, the engine is built along with the Taurus engine.
Let's face it..to work the street (mainly the ghetto) is an absolute culture shock. I can't tell my family most of the stories because they think I'm nuts. They always want police stories. So one Christmas I brought a copy of a case report and they read it. They pretended like they didn't read it. The next year I asked them what happened. They said they couldn't believe it. I told them you want to know, but you don't want to know. I feel so sorry for the young guys coming on this job.

The FOP should use this as an opportunity to push for a mandatory delay in the questioning of any officer involved in a shooting.
As pointed out in previous posts, most experts agree that an officer involved in such a traumatic incident should not be questioned for at least 24 hours.

As I read today's Tribune, I had to wonder what had happened to the tearful woman I spoke to as she hugged her daughter tight while leaving the the memorial service at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Cathedral that marked the one-year anniversary of Officer Mike Ceriale's assassination by a teenage gang member. Are you the same Ann Marie Lipinski who felt such a personal attachment after editing a series about Mike and his partner, Joe, that she felt she should attend that service with her daughter?
If so, have you somehow forgotten in the intervening years what Chicago Police Officers face everyday so that the law abiding citizens or this city -- regardless of race -- can feel safe? Have you -- or any of the reporters involved in this article -- ever had to make a split second life or death decision? Would you, or they, even want to for a salary that won't buy a house in Chicago, a uniform allowance and a pension that, at less than 45% funding, may or not be there if you make it to 20 years with your health intact?
Mike, my brother and thousands upon thousands of Chicago police officers are honorable, brave and heroic men and woman who do not deserve to be besmirched or have their integrity brought into question on the front page of the Chicago Tribune.
Please be advised that this long-time subscriber has canceled my subscription to the Chicago Tribune -- an action that I know many subscribers with family and friends who are members of the Chicago Police Department are taking.

The politicians put pressure on the administration and what do ya know, Good guy is fighting for his job. What the hell do you think this blog is filled with, SCC? I read the article and I think it's saying that the investigations into police-involved shootings need an overhaul. Is that so far off base? Roundtables are a joke, and you admit as much in your response. Making rulings without key witneses? Autopsy results? Imagine if the dics investigated your average homicide that way. If a shooting is justified, then how is it that a thorough review of the facts could hurt? It only helps. It helps keep bullshit lawsuits from being filed, it helps keep the city from shelling out taxpayer money, it helps officers know where they stand, it helps get truly bad officers off the streets.
Most of all, it helps keep nosy reporters off your ass.
An overhaul is long overdue. Quit being so sensitive.
You see what happens when the people of our country are disarmed by the liberals? A looney tunes lights up a mall and no one was there to end the spree. If one armed good guy had heard the firtst shots or saw him they could have neded this quick. Why? Here's ONE reason...because shootings are now handled by ops or irpra or whatever they are called now....citizens who read this crap are less likely to be fair. Same for judges. How did the Tribune get that Star for their internet edition of the article, "Shielded from the Truth?" It appears to be star number 236*, I believe that number is too low for a patrolmen. Therefore, it might be 1236*. Is this person in bed with the media? Or is this something they created?

did you see the story yesterday about a guy stealing a donut truck and the police caught all the chase on a cruisers dash cam. the reported used the word "allegedly" rammed the police car even though it was caught and shown on the dash cam footage.

For twenty five years the FOP has done nothing, absolutely nothing to get us good benefits and wages. We have lost benefits with the FOP. When other major cities were getting six to ten percent increases we were and still are lucky to get four- we have never had a true raise over four percent in twenty five years.
Look at YOUR effen contract. Do you see anything about job security? Hmmmm? There is none. The city can cut the force anytime it wants and lay people off. No where is there a minimum number of jobs required- like other real unions have.
The FOP does a piss poor job. Can you bid to specialized units by seniority- no, you need clout. Can you accuse a boss of violating Federal or State labor laws? No! FOP will tell you point blank they will not get a boss fired or jailed for violating laws.
FOP will not get involved in anything controversial that will give the member a victory. They have the same old sing song- no pyrric victories. Hire your own lawyer.

Come on guys... Where in the story does it say that every cop is bad and every shoot is bad? In fact, is says most of the shoots are good, but an investigative process that lacks credibility puts all the good shoots under a cloud.
If some of the investigations are half-assed, that leaves every investigation open to criticism.
No one likes to be criticized -- especially when the criticizing is being done by a reporter who tells the truth from the relative safety of a desk.
No matter whose version of the truth you believe, the fact is that officers, during that split second -- make mistakes -- a wholly human characteristic. And mistakes can happen in fear of one's life.
The fact is taht some some shoots are mistakes. That doesn't mean they're bad shoots. They're mistakes. When that's the case, in a perfect world, we'd be able to call them mistakes. But unfortunatley we have a mayor and a power structure that won't support officers who make honest mistakes.
The easy thing to to is shoot the messenger (even if he's unarmed). Anyone who says that every shoot is "justified" has let the smoke being blown up his ass tickle his brain. We know there are bad shoots out there and when they're covered up by bosses to get through the next exempt meeting, they're hurting us out there. Best to let the good shoots be good shoots and let the bad ones be bad ones.

And the Trib further reports that the testimony of Sgt. Herman Funster today included a statement that he and his ho were "sex friends" and that he didn't know she was a crack user. He should have just explained which of her cracks he was interested in. What a jag.

I then followed the call up with an e-mail to their customer service detailing the reason i cancelled, which was their need to follow in the footsteps of the sun times. my cancelled subscription may mean nothing to them, but it sure made me feel 100 times better!

Only the union president has a take home car. The rest, even when they are on 24 hour call, do not have take home cars.
If you think the FOP does nothng, next time you are in a jam at work, let's say a shooting, don't call the FOP, handle it yourself. The most welcome sight you can see is an FOP rep arriving to help keep your ass from being fired or going to prison.
Regarding the recent double fatal traffic accident in 019 with an off duty PO, DUI, etc., that unit rep did a great job of getting an attorney down to the district to represent the PO and protect his rights. True, the FOP won't pay for the lawyer being an off duty incident, not acting as the police etc. but that PO was damn glad to have an attorney there during his processing, questioning etc.
And you wonder why no one trusts the CPD. Turn around and look at yourself, you can fix this or just keep complaining. It is up to you 100%.

To all the PO's complaining that the FOP can't seem to negotiate a proper contract, please tell me how you might go about negotiating a contract with a city run by Richard M. Daley, with a lead labor attorney for the City who just slams down the City's proposals and says that's it take it or leave it.
And what will the FOP do, strike? No, against the law. Job action? Also against the law. What then? The FOP must go through the motions of trying to negotiate a contract in the face of a fucked up city that will not bargain in good faith. Does anyone have any ideas how to negotiate with a group of assholes that won't give an inch? We can't strike, we can't take an organized job action, what then?
The only option is to take good faith actions towards trying to get a contract in place and when the City acts in such an unreasonable manner to justify filing for arbitration then the FOP files for arbitration.
The lack of a timely decent contract is the City's fault, not the union. The only weapons the FOP has if the City will not compromise on issues are to file for arbitration, conduct informational picketing and hire a PR firm. The FOP does all of those things.
It is the City who will not negotiate, not the FOP. Write the Mayor with your gripes, he's the asshole who's position is always "my way or the highway."
I was reading this in the Redeye while on the EL. Only the EL car started to catch on fire by the one door, so I had to finish the story later.

Has anybody noticed that the FOP seems to be getting more and more WORTHLESS as each year passes? Just what have they really done out of the ordinary routine everyday FOP business? Wish we had a choice in real Unions to pick from.
FOP has NEVER gotten us a sizable raise, even with crime down every year for at least 5 yrs. in a row.. All we get is the stastus-quo raises, that barely keep up with rising prices and taxes. We are scammed every inch opf the way with the paltry raises we get. No other city agency is as successful year after year, in doing what it's supposed to, fighting crime, as the CPD, who get the shaft, and get paid like we are gargageman or bus drivers. FUCK THIS CITY, AND FUCK FOP.

If any copper uses those same establishments they can calmly tell the owners that they will no longer being getting your business as long as Mitchell does.

This apparently does not bother the press but the shooting of an asshole does.
The story is is one-sided. Having knowledge of one of the incidents, they left out keys facts that would have explained the officers actions. Standing alone, things often look wrong, but brought within context, actions are "justifiable," maybe wrong in hindsight, but still justifiable. Actions of those shot often precipitated the chain of events which led to their demise.

In similar fashion, the (white)Police chief of Jacksonville, FL held a press conference announcing that his department has done everything possible to combat rising violence in his city(community policing,outreach and social programs, etc), and now there is only 1 alternative left. HIRE 235 new officers at a cost of more than 20 million dollars.
Jacksonville has the highest crime rate of any city in Florida.Most of it Black-on-Black..that part of the news story was glossed over!

Due to conflicting statements from witness as to whether the Officer had beady eyes and/or a nazi mustache this investigation is continuing.....footnote, the 11 year old rape victim on the second floor who's life this Officer saved is in stable condition at Holy Cross hospital...her family (the owner of the two flat) is suing the CPD damages to the apartment doors where the Officer made a forced entry....We the MEDIA cannot understand why the police department does not convene a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of police shootings"...and the circus continues...retired 5 years and still proud
