Mayor Opens the Door?

Could this be a mistake? A mistake that the FOP and a smart lawyer could take advantage of? From the Sun Times 04 December:
  • Mayor Daley today defended his decision to pay a record-high $300,000 — $83,790 more than the mayor’s salary — to the career FBI agent he has chosen to clean up the Chicago Police Department.
  • Today, the mayor came to an unrelated City Hall news conference armed with the salaries of suburban and other big-city police chiefs. Asked about Weis, Daley pulled the list out of his pocket and read the salaries aloud to justify his claim that the police superintendent’s current salary is too low.

“Highland Park: $126,00 for a police chief. How many people live there? [31,365]. Lake Forest: $119,000. Barrington: $113,000. Los Angeles: $300,000,” the mayor said.

So the mayor is comparing what different Chiefs make from around the suburbs and around the country? Wonderful. Since the mayor has opened the door, now let's compare what the officers make. Step raises. Pension contributions and health care costs.

Residency.

Hey, don't blame us. The mayor brought it up. And if he can compare salaries around the city, county, state and nation, it'd be irresponsible for us to not compare the rules and regulations governing officers in those same jurisdictions and why a state law that only applies to Chicago police officers removes one of the most basic freedoms - the freedom to choose where to live.

Well one of the complaints of street sergeants is that they often have to cover more than one sector. If that is the case shouldn't they get double pay for that shift.

I hope this guy is worth it..

I know, I know, I KNOW!!! I know that when I signed up that there was residency. Since then, I grew up, started a family, AND WANT TO MOVE THE HELL OUT OF HERE. To the litany of "dah, you knew" and "dah, where are you gonna go" naysayers, it does not change the fact that WE CANNOT CHOOSE WHERE WE LIVE. Whether or not you agree with my reasoning, you MUST agree with the simple fact that we ALL are deprived of a simple right.... And to the "dah, get another job if yo don't like it" folks, if that is the best you can do, I sincerely hope YOU get another job.... I would rather CHANGE this situation for the betterment of all than simply deal with the status quo. Dah that!

i think that it has more to do that just residency. i think that if he wants to compare things i think it is a perfect time considering we are negotiating a contract and are currently working without a contract. i think that anythime the city has a sticking point we just have to compaer to other cities.

A "challenge" is one thing, Mr. Weis. An insurmountable clusterfuck is another.

There are premiere "police executives" that wouldn't take your job for a million bucks a year. It's so ironic that your most formidable obstacle to any meaningful reforms will be none other than da mare himself--Richard M. Daley.

Welcome to Chicago, sir. You have the dubious distinction of attempting to manage the most mismanaged, politically corrupt, clout-infested, major law enforcement agency in the nation.

Anyone but Jesus Christ Himself would be in way over their heads.

CLOUT is so deeply entrenched in the fiber of this city, it would take an Act of God to even minimize corrupt political influence on the assignments and promotions of incompetent political hacks and sycophantic borderline morons.

It's called "THE CHICAGO WAY!" Good luck, Jody...and may God have mercy on your soul!

I agree. Residency was on the books when I came on too, just like everybody else. But also, college was NOT required. I took promotional tests & made Sgt before they instituted the college requirement. Having to raise a family and work several side jobs, college was not an option for me. Also, I was paying NOTHING for health insurance. The city wanted to make it $1 a paycheck. We argued & fought, but the FOP said "it's only a dollar", knowing damn well as soon as they got their foot in the door, they'd increase it as they saw fit.
Point being, the city can change the rules whenever it works for them, why can't we try the same. We need PROFESSIONAL labor negotiators, not FOP hacks!

why not get rid of the residency, and let Itasca, Gurnee , Park Ridge deal with our asses.

or maybe us cpd need to live out of the city, to give us a break from the crazy shit. maybe an officer will be able to put up with more , knowing he can go home to a peaceful neighborhood, and not have to deal with all the commotion of the big city.

As one of those lawyers that some of you love to hate,I should say that I agree with you.

If they put me in charge of the CPD, the first thing I'd do is give you all a hefty raise. Next, I'd establish a realistic overtime policy. Then I'd figure out some way to pay a premium to officers who work bad shifts, or in difficult districts. And the residency rule would be history.

Right now, the City takes advantage of the fact that many of you went into police work because you believe in it, and are therefore willing to work at a discount. To me, that seems ass-backwards. A commitment to public service should be rewarded financially, not punished.

Demand more from the City. You'll have some unlikely allies. Some of us, at least, realize that you get what you pay for. And if we give police officers the pay and working conditions they deserve, it's good for everyone.

Happy police officers are good police officers.

Good luck paying 10-15K every year for taxes, sure you would save on education, but that ends and your still in your house paying more for taxes. Your taxes are a bargain in the city, so keep whining and ill move you out, buy your house at a cut rate price because no one else will want it, and when you have to move back because you can't afford the suburbs i'll make a tidy profit....

We in Orland Park pay approx. 2% in property taxes. New 3500 sq ft. house, paid $400,000. Taxes,$5000. Orland park refunds 100% of its portion. approx. $300. Would most likeley still send my children to catholic schools, if I had resided here when they were in school, no savings there. To offset, the property taxes, my State Farm auto insurance was reduced by 1/3, savings $1000 for two vehicles. It is not cheap living here and there assholes everywhere. but it is where the majority of middle-class people reside. The scenery is not like Utah but much better than Western Ave.

The story is about an Area 1 Homicide where two dets are forced to work with the fbi when an fbi agent is murdered along with a CPD Officer. Read it, then ask anyone who has experienced the fbi if it's accurate, I know they'll say it is. Keating is a former CCSPD officer who is currently incarserated for corruption, but he hits the nail on the head. Any comments from anyone who read the book?

Shouldn't THEY then get PAID at 3 TIMES the going rate, since they are covering the ENTIRE DISTRICT?
THINK before YOU hit the SUBMIT BUTTON. While I will state that being a patrol Sgt. is no glamour post, if it was so bad, why are so many people showing up at the promotion exam sites? Hard to believe that some within our rank are so boneheaded.

The biggest joke on this department is the 45 minutes a day that supervisors get just for showing up to work. Most sergeants are out the door long before that "45 minute" window even opens. If the city wants to save money take this bullshit 45 minutes away and that would save the city millions in the long run.
