Sun Times Losing Ground
- Chicago Sun-Times executives told the union representing reporters, copy editors and columnists at the paper that it intends to eliminate 35 union positions in the newsroom. Five non-union management jobs also may be cut, sources said.
- Sun-Times Media, which also owns dozens of daily and weekly newspapers in the suburbs, earlier made the decision to combine its Star newspapers with the Daily Southtown, resulting in the elimination of 31 positions.
- The 35 positions represent roughly 19 percent of the 188 union newsroom jobs. Within the six groups of job classifications affected, only photographers and writers of "major sports" appear to be spared, according to the letter.
We received word from someone who has more than a passing familiarity with newsrooms that the mood there is grim. What with more and more people getting their news via the Internet and the ability of blogs and "citizen reporters" to get the news out faster and without the layers of bias so prevalent in the media today, it's no wonder that the "dead tree media" is tanking at many levels.
We won't say we're sorry to see them hurting, seeing all the pain they've inflicted on the CPD by going for the sensational short run headlines rather than the endemic corruption that is bleeding this city dry. Maybe they can wake up before it's too late, but institutional inertia runs deep in the news business and we doubt their ability to adapt.
Keep canceling those subscriptions. Death by a thousand cuts is still death.

I signed up for the free introductory sun-times 2 weeks ago. Got my free papers just for the crossword and soduku(sp) just so I could call and cancel my subscription now that was fun. When asked why I was cancelling I just said that when you fire that shit-head bitch and stop being a propaganda rag for City Hall i'd think about getting home delivery.
Think I offended the man who took that call. He said that calling MM those names was inappropriate. I pointed out that I never mentioned anyone specifically. He promptly hung up. Then called the Credit Card Company to block any charges.
geez, where will SCC get all the "news" it "reports" once the S-T is gone?

for a site that bitches so much about 'the media,' y'all seem to rely on it quite a bit to pad your blog with stuff. how about putting your money where your mouth is and not quoting from or linking to any stories, columns, etc. from the sun-times, any of its properties or affilliates [including TV staion web sites that run S-T stories]? what would you have then? rumors and kass columns -- the blind leading those who do not wish to see.
The advertisers get nothing for their money. That is why the newspapers are failing. No one under 50 reads the paper every day.
Saw the WIRE last night. Terrific. It's like David Simon is psychic. The opening scene with the dicks giving the mope a "lie detector" test using the copy machine is priceless.
That is why the Sun Times has been hitting the CPD so hard. They feel that sales rise when there is a CPD scandal. They figure they could make us look like assholes and make a profit on it. Obviously, the public got bored with the fake headlines as well.

Unfortunately Moprah would not be fired, in fact they will probably hire more "controversial" columnists (code word for race bating liberal pieces of shit).
If they were serious about delivering unbiased news and information, they would hire a columnist that was the exact opposite, like Mike Adams.
If anyone thinks the media is not biased, they are either incredibly naive or stupid.

SCC, once again you are filled with an inflated sense of self-importance. As you said, the newspaper industry as a whole is suffering because more and more people choose to get their news online. But the comparatively few CPD members who cancelled their Sun-Times subscriptions did not and will not make a dent towards that paper's misfortunes, it's just the way the entire industry is going. And your assertion that there is no bias from "citizen reporters" is laughable. Look at the rumor-mongering and the slanted commentary on your site. Cops are the biggest liars in the world, and the hypocrisy of that is one of the reasons that some of us are feeling down about our job right now.

I cancelled my subscription to the Sun-Times a few years ago. I will never buy the paper again, but I'll read it if the previous crew leaves me one in the squad car. I can't believe the way that paper has changed. It seems the paper has been dumbed down, like a grammar school paper. Some of the articles don't answer what you would think are the basics of reporting, who, what, when, where, and why. Thats all we need, no opinions. The articles are biased towards the left, almost as if the paper were a branch of the Democratic Party. I just want facts when I read the news, the sooner the media figures this out, the better for their bottom line. People are tired of being taken for fools.

I cancelled my subscription to the S-times a year ago. It sends that the paper is loaded with those immigrant sob stories. "Poor Pable just wants to work but mean white people ... or border agents... or whatever are picking on them." My comment is usually, 'If you don't like it, go home! Go back to your old jobs." It seems that the S-T wants to rid themselves of educated white people for Illiterate Spanish speakers. I'm sure that increases the advertising and brings in the ad money. First the S-t, then the Tribune!

speak for yourself. I could care less about the slant times. I wake up I enjoy my wife and baby, I go to work...I enjoy (far less then my family) I come home I enjoy some sportcenter
then I enjoy some sleep...none of the other shit gets me down. Since I came on the job 10 years ago a lot of shit has happened and other than "ooooooooooh, don't do that" none of it matters. Be safe.

I've crossed the suntimes off my list and don't watch Channel 5 anymore....too liberal slanted for me....channel 7 gives a better unbiased view and channel 2 is just boring.....also, used to like channel 2 until I heard about anchor Diann B. complain about her own personal problems with construction on her house saying the contractor screwed things up 'cause "she is black"....that was the most ridiculous statement I ever heard....Diann darling, contractors can and will screw up any and all projects no matter what race you are and no matter who you are, an unknown like me or a local tv personality such as yourself. Pulling the race card on that was too OJ. Uneducated and stupid comment on her part. Yawn and Goodnight.
The Daily News failed because it was too high brow and too literate - sophisticated for a mass audience. The Sun Times will fail because it is too low brow.
Damn... I do miss the Chicago Daily News!!
