Quick Hits

A couple of things. First up, the mayor and city council justify the tax hikes by giving away almost $200,000 on another bullshit claim:
  • Five weeks after taking a defiant stand against the settlement, a City Council committee agreed Monday to pay $195,000 to a man who made a "Scarface"-style claim: that Chicago Police officers who detained him during a 2004 drug raid threatened him with a running chain saw, downloaded pornography onto his computer and used racial epithets to insult him.
We're assuming that this chainsaw was located and inventoried by IAD? And witnesses supported this allegation? And the coppers downloaded porn from some website onto this goof's computer for what purpose? The electronic trail must have been something to follow for a $195,000 payout. We're surprised a magical screwdriver didn't appear out of thin air.

Dead bodies appearing on 014:
  • A possibly homeless man died after he was found unresponsive in a Northwest Side police station lobby Monday night.

Paul Schmatko, 47, who was possibly homeless, was pronounced dead at 9:05 p.m. at Norwegian-American Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Schmatko was found unresponsive in the Shakespeare District police station lobby at 2150 N. California Ave., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Bereaved family and lawyer appearing in 3...2...1...

And finally, Sneed recycling already disproved BS:
  • Gulp! Sneed hears rumbles new Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis may have ordered roadblocks to target drunken cops in neighborhoods where a preponderance of police officers live.
Those roadblock locations are published weeks in advance. There's nothing suggesting that he's targeting coppers - but if you're a copper who gets caught up in one, better not expect any breaks. Try to keep up here Sneed - this isn't Cline's Department anymore.

Bullshit on the chainsaw! I worked in Housing South. They wouldn't call in a murder in progress but you can bet your ass everyone with a phone would've been calling 911 on "all dat racket down da hall" Check the tapes. No calls, no chainsaw.

If we had roadblocks 25 years ago, perhaps Officer Monahan would be alive instead of wrapped around a utility post on western avenue.

Anyone with a general knowledge of investigating computers would know when the images of downloaded porn are downloaded to the computers hard drive they are encypted code that records date and times of sites visited. An Investigation proved that asshole was lying. The only reason that asshole got paid was because he cried during the deposition and the the City Atty fees grew beyond the fixed settlement amount. Ass hat city atty said the alleged vict. was a credible "vict" due to acting. This douche sued the city in the past and won a previous settlement. The city should appeal. 195,000.00 is at least 4 new police officers salaries for a year. Way to go Corporation Council.
If the city is looking for a way to reduce the budget, try fighting some of the B.S. lawsuits. The more you win the less you have to pay.

FACTS ABOUT THE CHAINSAW INCIDENT
#1 Haywood did a photo line up w/ IAD and picked out people who were not even working.
#2 HE insisted all along that that the three officers were in plain clothes...they were in uniform at the time.
#3 He withdrew his porn complaint because the city attorneys proved he was lying.
#4 Haywood had 15 witnessess and NOT ONE verified his story...and ONE OF THEM IS ACTUALLY ON RECORD SAYING...I AM NOT LYING FOR THAT NO GOOD MAN.
#5 Haywood has been accused TWICE of sexual abuse to his daughter...DON'T FORGET ...HIS ATTORNEY CALLED HIM LAW ABIDING.HE HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED TWICE BY D.C.F.S.
#5 HE had no idea who the "3 OFFICERS" were until he came to the deposistions, stayed about 5 minutes and then left.AND HE STILL WAS NOT SURE!!! BUT HIS ATTORNEY HAD TO COAX HIM!!!

Anyone who knows those officers who were accused of weilding a chain saw, knows those guys went through hell over that lawsuit.Their home computers were almost subpoened until Haywood withdrew the complaint.Corp.Council asked them if they would be willing to pay some money out of their pocket to make it go away. They were repeatedly told that because of the new IPRA,regardless of the outcome ,they might be removed from the street. and the sad thing is,none of it ever happened. But CORP. COUNCIL has been bent over a barrel because of the constant MEDIA blitz and tainted jurys. If you go to trial on a civil matter now...you dont have a prayer.

I hope that you aren't a police officer, if you are, you ought to reflect on why you became one. In the final moments of that man's life on earth, he came to us because he probably felt safe, thought he might get fed, or was just too f'ed up to deal with the outside world. I know we all see terrible things out there every time we walk out of those station doors. And we sometimes try to deal with them by injecting humor into the situation as a coping mechanism, but there is no need to make a comment like that. That man may have been homeless, unemployed, and without a family, or had a family that just didn't give a care. Thats one of the reasons we are there...

She published a blantantly false article accusing Weis of targeting police in DUI stops.

The city settled because the defense legal fees had already exceeded $195K.

In a Federal trial against the police any judgement for the plaintiff (even $1) means the city must pay all of the plaintiff's legal fees on top of the judgement.

The law professor in this case will probably take $190K and throw $5K to the criminal to shut him up.

That is the true reason why all of these BS suits are filed. The lawyers jack up the fees (depositions, experts, etc...) and propose a settlement that covers their fees. The criminal plantiffs get nothing or a token amount to buy new rims. Everyone's happy.

Oh, except the cops. The papers take the settlements as evidence the cops are dirty or brutal and then use the settlement to embarrass them in public, trying to get them fired.

Police are the pawns in a multi-billion dollar industry.

The People's Law Office, AKA University of Chicago, who is connected to alot of Chicago politicians begins to write letters to altercreatures because of the exoborant amount of money the university spent to litigate this case. The university succesfully strong armed the altercreatures, and acknowledge they did it, and the university admitts to getting the bulk of the settlement. Haywood will get around $50,000.00 the university the rest. Lets see an investigation into these kinds of backdoor scams.

That's the problem, so much criminal activity and close to zero interest or effort made by those entrusted with the responsibility and authority to investigate, indict and prosecute the offenders.

What has the State's Attorney General been doing?

When, and why, is it preferable to take an ass fucking than to resist the attempted assault?

You take someone in, you're responsible for them. Are they searched before they come in? Is there a policy and procedure in place for letting bums lay around a police station? He died, so obviously nobody was really watching him. Maybe he could have walked up behind some officer (who didn't think he was a threat "because he's just a bum") and blew his brains out. You better believe someone is going to crawl out of the woodwork now and blame your ass for his death. It's ridiculous. Cops shouldn't be babysitters. The whole fucking world has gone crazy, there's no common sense or boundaries anymore. Next time you want to relieve your guilty conscience, why don't you invite a homeless person home for dinner. No Dr. Phil, I didn't. You know life experience has a way of enabling you to see things for what they are. Something either makes sense or has the potential to be a pain in the ass and/or trouble. For every action, there is a reaction. Being able to anticipate a cluster fuck before it happens is a wonderful thing. It can help you out in almost every situation imaginable. It's called critical thinking. And I'm sick of politicians sucking off every broke ass loser in exchange for appearances and votes.

I have a heart but people like you are always looking for some deep shit that doesn't always exist. If you want to help someone, there are appropriate agencies to do it at. The Shakesphere district is not one of them.

Now take your Officer Lucy Bates ass and volunteer somewhere if it will make you feel more compassionate.

About fifteen years ago a homeless person that spent his nights sleeping in the 24th District station at night, which was verified after interviewing the desk crew in 24. Walked up to citizen and for no reason put a round into this gentelmans head. He
was apprehended about two blocks away from the homicide getting on the El across from the 14th District station. When arrested he was found in possession of two handguns, he proudly stated that he has had these weapons for a lenghty time and ALWAYS had them with him when he slept in 24th District station.

Thank you. I rest my case.

Why don't you make a coherent statement so I can comment on it?

Oh, I'm so sorry, you must be even younger than I thought. When you take someone's inventory, you're watching what they are doing instead of taking care of your own shit.

It's an 80's term.

Furthermore, I don't know what all police officers do, baggers, 1811 pinches etc. that you mentioned and denigrated. But whatever they do, I certainly appreciate. Especially reading this blog and hearing all the bullshit they have to go through.

Have you ever been exposed to TB? The fact that you would worry about the welfare of a bum rather than realizing that a bum could jeopardize the safety of an officer or citizen (as was stated in the previous post) is disturbing. Total lack of common sense.

I feel sorry for the poor bastard that has to ride with you.

Don't feel sorry for the poor bastard, he went in to the watch commander and asked not to work with you anymore...

Not a police office, a taxpayer. And letting bums sleep it off in a police station is just another stupid idea by stupid politicians. Since when is the police station the Dept. of Human Services? You take someone in, you're responsible for them. Are they searched before they come in?

Nowhere in any of my posts did I say homeless people should be allowed to sleep in the station. Nobody should be allowed to linger in the station. I agree you can't have people sacked out on the station floor. If they do come into the station they should be directed to a place other than the station for shelter, or if in need of medical attention CFD should be called. But they should be helped. Some people here have a reading comprehension problem.

And you must be a merit Sgt. if you can't tell your desk crew to see what the homeless person needs while you approve an inventory. delegate your authority and tell the desk crew to see what the homeless

does this mean that we have to put coroners seals on doors at 014. poor poopy pants piss bum. the baloney must have killed him.

That is what you said. Sounds a little sanctamonious to me and since you were fishing for it let me just say that I will sleep better tonight knowing that "that's why you're there." (rmfe)
