Illusion of Safety Revisited

We've been noticing some variation on the following theme in most of the reporting about the Crane High School shooting:
  • Friday's shooting occurred in full view of one of five Chicago Police cameras stationed within a block of the Near West Side campus that is heavily patrolled by police and school administrators at dismissal time -- as a number of students watched.
Cameras. Everyone is mentioning the cameras. Near the cameras. Under the cameras. In view of the cameras. Once again, this supports our contention that cameras do not prevent crime. All they do is provide a better eyewitness than your regular run-of-the-mill civilian. And that's only if it happens to be looking in the right direction.

Cameras provide the illusion of police presence without actually spending the money on a real live police officer. Again, we'll let everyone know that NO ONE is watching these things. No one at all more than 90% of the time. And even if they were, the camera isn't going to magically transform into an officer to protect someone.

As one of our west side readers noted, how about someone does a story on why three public schools within a two mile radius eat up literally hundreds of man hours worth of police service each and every day during the school year? And why there are FIVE cameras around Crane alone? That'd be some interesting reading.

The Principality of Monaco offers the strongest argument for a converse relationship between crime and their ubiquitous street cameras. Every block of every street in this tiny country is covered by monitored cameras while street crime is virtually non-existent.

When travelling the Cote D'Azur, stop by. You will be impressed.
Check out the casino at Monte Carlo. Several daily non-stop flights from Paris (CDG) to nearby Nice. Continue east to Monte Carlo via train or the Grand Corniche.

It will be the same with the police once we are totally de-fanged.

Not just 5 cameras, there were at least 5 police cars there when the shooting occurred, not even 1/2 a block from the school. These future Westside leaders do not care who or what is around. They know you can't touch them without being all over the news and a huge payday from the city. Police, teachers, cameras, can't touch them. Bring the army in and they still wouldn't act right.

You are right though, no one wants to address why there are 5 cameras over there and why you need so many officers committed to that school at dismissal. How come there and not Northside College Prep???
It's not even about race. It comes down to the parents and low expectations. The victim was considered a "good kid" with four recent arrests. That doesn't fly in most communities. The kid's mother was showing off her neck tattoo that said "RIP Ray Ray." That says it all.

They want cameras and a perseption of security why don't they connect the camera system, the ones on the public way or where they would not be an invasion of anyones rights or privacy, to the internet or the city TV channel. I am sure a lot of people would watch them and the city could introduce the program with a big fan fare and advertising campaign. Let everyone know they are not alone. Its been said it is the era of "Big Brother" so make it a positive thing. Give people a sense of security and involvement.

Truly unbelievable!!!!! If we did make them move, you would be right there bitching at us saying, "Why you messing with them fo, they just hangin out" to be proceeded with a phone call to the principal stating the police are "harassin they kids" Both of these kids were gangbangers!!! Lady your kid was a gangbanger!!! and since you wont admit it that in it self is a problem. The victim had multiple arrest for PCS and one for UUW. And Mrs. Ivy I know you know about these arrests since you had to come and pick him up most of the time. As a parent what did you do to stop his criminal activity? I would say NOTHING? You would justify it by blaming the police, just as you are now!!! Your sons death is your fault!!!! Because you failed to stop his behavior.

You forgot one major component missing from the culture of Monaco and the French Riviera.

Transplant a few thousand West and South Side thugs and their bitches to Monaco and a million cameras won't mean squat. You'll need lots of "boots on the ground", strict life prison sentences, capital punishment and mandatory sterilization. Otherwise, their prolific spawns will be robbing, raping, homicidal time bombs.

Then again, Prince Albert could always implement a Mediterranean version of C.A.P.S. (LMAO) with generous welfare benefits to try to appease the bloodthirsty parasites.

"Affirmative action", "political correctness" and "the celebration of diversity" would solve the problem. Right?

Bring on the Kool-Aid tankers.

Hey "Grimaldi". It aint your cameras, its the culture.
Try the experiment of Dubuque,Iowa.
They imported over 100 poor families from Chicago about 12 years back to add some "diversity"
to their population.
And now they've(Dubuque) gone from a crime-free city to having people beaten & robbed at gunpoint on a daily basis. You can even throw in an occasional murder.
Your cameras may be preventing terrorist attacks, they'll never stop the streetcrime of a "thug" populace.........

They'd have to increase staffing 10 times just to handle the 911 traffic.

And that would put a 'strain' on the city's already bloated, but 'underfunded', budget.

It would, however, be the only authentic 'reality television'.

A few downsides:

We are already a society of rats, no need to encourage and sanctify, ie. 'ratify', everyone being rat bastards.

Also, what a gift this would be to the miscreants; they can watch honest citizens going to and from their homes, keep an eye on the avenues of approach to their 'dens of iniquity', pre-select their victims, track their 'enemies, etc., enjoy being 'one step ahead' etc., etc.....

Privacy, as an expectation, or even as a pipe dream, will have vanished into oblivion.

A perfect realization of Big Brother society.

Be careful what you wish for......

The mayor and the city council think that the cameras are the answer to solving crimes, they're not! Wake up people! It's just another ploy for the mayor to waste our money.

If you want to fight crime, HIRE MORE POLICE!!! We are at an all time low, in manpower and morale!!!

What a facinating question in light of recent events. Moreover SCC I'm curious that your standard remedy for such incidents--more guns--has not made its obligatory appearance in this discussion. Naturally if other Crane students had been properly armed they could have prevented this young man's untimely demise.

Here's a great idea!

Bring back the School Unit!

It was a really dumb idea to get rid of the school unit! Hey, J-FED bring the School unit back!

Then you won't have Closed Market coppers who don't have a clue as to who the players are or what is going on in a given High School.

Closed Market Officers were ordered by this goof Commander Sodini of 012, to go into Crane High School at 1430 hrs. and help disperse out of control jagoffs but then he pulls his 012 District P.O.'s out of Crane High School!

What the fuck!

Where's our back up going to?

My question is:

Where were the 012 District coppers going to? 012 should know who the players are not Closed Market people!

012 is by no means a busy District, unlike 011 District!

What's the matter 012 District, can't handle one Ghetto ass high school in your District! PITIFUL!

Yeah! This is a real big illusion of safety!

It's unsafe for outside units, who don't know the players in a given war zone!

I'd say "like father, like son!" But, since father is nowhere to be found I guess it's "like mother, like son!"

The article goes on to relate how momma still carries a bullet inside her and visible scars, from when she was shot inside the school(Crane H.S.) in 1984, while a student there.

UNFUCKINGBELIEVIBLE!

I was hunting in Michigan. Met a man with a camera, not a gun. He liked to Stalk the game, photo'ed it. Said he didn't need to shoot an animal to hunt it. Was satisfied with a closeup photo rather than a kill. Didn't destroy or disturb wildlife. I think he is a prototype of the 21st century Chicago police officer

A similar incident occurred in the city North of Chicago near the "large body of water" not too long ago.

A youngster was shot and killed in an alley just north of the High School there. The community complained that it took officers too long to respond (even though they were there within minutes) and criticized the response time as if it had something to do with the young man being shot in the first place.

Additionally, would be onlookers/witnesses cursed and shoved officers on scene as if the officers were the ones who shot this fella. The news reported that the this fella was H.S. football star who was a good kid, but his record showed otherwise.

On a side Note:
There is also a camera "strategically located" on a particular corner in town, but I'm uncertain if the thing works.

The strobes have been turned off, more than likely to appease bothered residents. If that is the case, I don't understand the rationale behind installing the thing to begin with. As we all know that deterrence is the reason of its purpose of being obviously visible.

I guess where I'm getting at is that our tiny "mysterious" city has similar "flaws" (which is an understatement), but on a minor scale, and seems to follow the lead of big Brother(Chicago).

I can foresee this city installing those camera ticketing machines in the future.

When driving the squad through one of those bad boys, I wonder if the city will pay the fine(s) since the registered owner is responsible, not the driver?

Minimum of 10 officers up and down Jackson Blvd. Tact and Beat cars. But not one of them gets out of their warm cars. Maybe if they got their asses out of the cars, this kid would still be alive.
