Fitness Standards

Once again, J-Fed throws a big old wrench out there and watches everyone scurry around like it's the second coming. A few weeks ago, it was the 12 hour day proposal. The comment section went nuts and we here at SCC had a difficult time keeping up with the traffic. The entire incident was kind of enlightening in that negotiations are already underway on a different schedule and there have been ZERO proposals, studies and input from the people who'd actually be working the schedule. The variables would give a cautious person pause and as we are cautious by nature, we'd have to see a lot more info on this before implemented.

Friday, we have the "fitness" debate.

We're in favor of fitness. Fitness is good. Fitness will enable us to live longer while eating cat food since Daley and his criminal enterprise will have bankrupted the pension by the time we're eligible to collect anything. By being fit, we'll be able to piss on the graves of more than a few people who had a hand in the pension's demise.

J-Fed can throw anything he wants out in the media and it means exactly zip until it's in front of the negotiators. And as the union will probably demand massive concessions for this to become binding, we imagine it'll be a throwaway item. By the time it gets revisited, J-Fed's 3-year contract will be over and Daley will be moving on toward Olympic dreams while handing the reins of power to Jesse Jr. or some similarly corrupt enterprise.

Reading Fran Spielman's article was amusing though. On many levels:
  • “If you want guys to work out, let them park the car and go work out, like I’m sure he does…Give us time during an eight-hour shift. That way, we’ll be sure to get it in,” said Greg Bella, the FOP’s third vice-president.

“When they come on the job, everybody’s in shape. But people eat because of stress. How much stress is put on these guys because they’re working six days a week? If they’re so concerned about our health and they know stress triggers a fat problem, why do they deny us time off?”

    Specifically, Bella demanded that Weis:

    • Carve out one hour of every workday to allow officers to work out on city time.

    • Install kitchens with stoves and refrigerators at all police stations so officers can cook and eat healthy, instead of relying on fast food.

“Let’s bring some broccoli and cauliflower and let us boil it. Let’s get healthy. Maybe J-fed [Weis, a former FBI agent] would like to stock the fridge for us so we can have healthy food,” Bella said.

Numerous municipalities (largest among them Los Angeles) grant officers time during their shift to work out.

We fight the City tooth and nail to get time and ammunition to practice and qualify with - we don't see them supplying us with fresh produce.

Bella calls Weis "J-Fed" and Spielman prints it. That is priceless.

Have you seen Bella lately? No wonder he was so offended, the man has crossed the three-bill threshold!

As for J-Fed, they need to stop calling him a bodybuilder! His body is a lot closer to the Schwarzenegger of today than the Schwarzenegger in Terminator! He's got a gut fer Seiser's sake! The media LOVES talking about his alleged fitness, and as usual, they are full of shit.

Obviously we wouldn't give it up for free, but why are we fighting it? New hires its mandatory, and anyone else is grandfathered in with the option of taking the test for 1000. That would be enough to get some people off of their lazy humps and hit the gym twice a week. And that is all it takes to make a big difference. I cant stand hearing you guys talk about there is not time. You need to make time for your health. Its your body you are in charge of keeping it in working order.

So J-Fed has no kids, no side jobs and no court. The average PO has all the above, and no time for the luxury of working out.

No wonder he has all the free time in the world to work out.

I stay in shape just to say "fuck you" to the city when I live long on my pension.

You want PO's to stay in shape? Put a workout room in each district and give them an hour a day on company time to workout.

I am sure the city will shoot that down, the longer more of us live, the more they have to pay us in pension.

They prefer us to work six day work weeks and become drunks, eat like shit, etc. Saves them millions!

I would love to see him balance a household get up in the morning with tehkids and get them off to school and then make it to court on timeso I don't get deviated by his inspectors then maybe make it to one of my side jobsor perhaps to the district to work my shift and maybe a late job or arrest or a side job then home to sleep for a few hoursto get back up & do it all over again..... Let's face it some guys can and have the time to work out what does J-Fed have a kitty cat to go home to??? When he wantsto work out he can go when he wants to 35th or OEMC.

How about the city throws in a gym membership as part of the deal! I work out at my home so I am limited to cardio only workouts. If I had a free membership to say, Ballys or Xsport Id go 3-4 times a week and strength train along with cardio. Make it available... just like giving a kid money to study doesnt work, neither does saying "STUDY OR ELSE!" But if you make the kid want to study and give him a membership to a nice learning center or library he will most likely enjoy it and then do it on his own!

J-fed
It was in poor taste, insulting and humiliating to the fine men and women in blue that you had publicly ostracized today in the press. Shame on you. You don't even know how some of these people struggle everyday with weight problems. Thanks for taking men and women, who's families, parents and children are proud of them for being police officers and opening them to ridicule.
Let's not stop there. Let's not hire ugly people. Make it mandatory for them to have plastic surgery. People don't like to talk to ugly people it makes them uncomfortable, that's why the pretty people are on tv and billboards. Therefore they can't be good police officers.
Let's not hire dark people, dark african or those really dark eastern indians. Not only are they frightening and intimidating, but they cannot be seen at night. Therefore they can't be good police officers.

Let's not hire short people. Reinstate the height requirement, 5 08' for a women and 5 10' for a man. Because they're physically unable to perform like a tall person. Therefore they can't be good police officers.
Let's not hire anyone with a lazy eye or crossed eye. People are uncomfortable communicating with them because they can't stop staring at the other eye. Which in turn stresses out the citizen. Therefore they can't be good police officers.
Let's not hire anyone from the federal goverment, especially the ugly, crossed eyed, short, deformed ear type.
Maybe you should concentrate more on the inside of a police officer rather than the outside appearance.
People don't care if an one eyed, one horned, bald headed fat copper was on their stoop, if the copper was compassionate, fair, and did they're job honestly. As opposed to a narcissistic, greedy thug who could run a mile and a half, and do 50 situps.
Changes start within.

This is great. We have morale at an all time low and the new boss is concerned about stupid shit like a handful of fat asses.

Hey new boss don't worry about the important things such as the students killing each other and all the idiots slinging drugs to each other .

The mayor must of hired you for PR purposes only. The important issues must not be in your agenda.

Open your eyes to the crimes of the city and the police officers that attend to them and maybe you will figure out how to be the police officer that you were hired to be for the city of chicago.

If you have not figured it out yet this is not the FBI. Investigation is not the only aspect of police work and believe it or not there is the day to day grind of patrol which is about 75-85% of police work. I will gladly take an hour to work out every tour or duty to comply with a new standard. I hope you have people to fill in when the public is causing mayhem so that I can work out on company time.

J Weis get a clue and stop thinking out loud to the media because they are not your friend.

Maybe he should have racquetball courts installed at police stations like at firehouses. Maybe police should be able to sleep 1/3 of their shift like firemen. How about double time for court that does not lead directly onto or come off of your shift--an example is traffic court at 10:30 for midnight officers--it makes no sense. How about not changing someones shift on a couple hours notice just "because I can". The $250 incentive again is you giving up your time, let them do it on duty. Firemen have time to do all the little stuff while at work like work out, wash their cars, do some reading(for the few of them that can read), millions of other odds and ends. We get Big Bird"ed". FED boy stop being part of the problem and start being a part of the solution, this is CPD not the fbi, apparently you learned that pretty quickly by hiring your buddies and doing exactly what every other SUP has done and not looking for the best people. Stressing diversity means you will accept less than the best and that includes whites.

FED boy ask yourself simple questions, if it is true that this Eric Carter is the new DC of 022 what is a well respected guy that made Lt on his own and spent years as a lt, then gets promoted to capt and does that for several years doing wrong? Merit picks get double promoted because that is who are pre-chosen for these spots. What training will you offer the people who are clearly more deserving of that promotion so that they might be "ready" in the future?

There are many examples of people who everyone is aware will be promoted ahead of time. Tony Carrothers is an example--merit detective, merit sgt, merit lt, is there anyone who doesn't believe that Tony will be a Commander then deputy chief then chief and then deputy supt? In chicago everyone knows that it doesn't have anything to do with his brother being an alderman who is chair of the police fire committee.

There are white people also, Leo Schmitz has about as much chance at getting promoted without merit as he does of winning the lotto everyday for the rest of his life. Yet he gets merit sgt and lt, spends almost no time as a supervisor in district law enforcement and of course he needs to be made a commander in ---you guessed it---district law enforcement.

Pay attention FED boy and to do a good job you have to start by doing what is right. That means to scrap diversity which gives us both the Tony Carrothers and the Leo Schmitz' of the department.

I'm glad to see that he's pushing mandatory pyhysical fitness. It's about time. I've been an advocate of this for years. Some of us look disgusting - 20 lbs. of potatoes in a 5 lb sack, thats what some people look like. And stop the BS about not having any time to work out. MAKE TIME! Stop living above your means so that you won't have to work all these part time jobs. Make a workout a part of your daily routine, a part of your life. Devote a half hour to YOURSELF every single day, no matter if you run, walk, lift weights, whatever. Do something for yourself.

To All the TRU Haters:
You're all right, I did not have a lot of time on the job when I got here. I was working in a district with a bunch of people who wanted to do their 8 and skate. No problem with that. But I was hungry to learn and the only way to learn is by working. An opportunity came up that allowed me the opportunity to work and learn and I took it. It wasn't the at 68 democratic convention, I wasn't at the Bulls riots of the 90's, I wasn't on the job in the "old days" were you earned your spurs from an old timer. I came on the job and was trained by people who had a year or two more than me on the job. I knew it was the blind leading the blind. Given the options before me, TRU looked like an opportunity to learn something, ANYTHING, because there sure wasn't anyone in the district willing to teach me. Rumor has it that we may be getting shut down. That means there will be 300+ of us 2 year wonders (now 5+ year wonders) coming to a district near you. ARE YOU READY FOR US? Think what you want but we've actually been out on the streets in the worst parts of town doing the job. We've been quietly backing you up on those calls for service in your districts. If they do bust up the TRU unit, I look forward to working anywhere they send me and working with any of you.

I went to qualify with my Sig .45 cal in early January and was told I could not due to no ammunition for my weapon available. I could go buy my own or wait until the city had purchased some .45 ammo.

This is a police department, aren't we supposed to have some of the important stuff, you know, like ammunition to qualify with?

Now kitchens, food, broccoli? Please. The training is shit, the equipment is shit, the computers in my squad car run Windows 98, there are NO pool cars and we are having a debate on healthy food in police stations?

I guess that is nice but I would really appreciate some department sponsored training that is worth something, some ammo, some proper police equipment, you know, the basics.

As for food, get real, you are on your own there. At the Area where I work we only have some basic weight equipment because the officers BOUGHT IT THEMSELVES! And we have to kick in to continue to use it.

Let the Department build us proper workout facilities or else pay for police memberships in the local health clubs. I doubt J-Fed ever had to deal with the shit facilities that are a fact of life here.

Bella sounds more pissed about the city’s apparent appeal of the FLSA finding rather than the workout stuff. Thou Bella is the fattest of the board of FOP. The FLAS thing has got the city very worried because every Tact guy in the city will to take off for Bud Billiken, Gay, PR, and Mexican Parades. The city could only deny time off if their was a manpower shortage. The city can not do that if every unit District and D-Units have 15-25% of their people detailed out!

The city would have to pay time and a half to get people to work their day off. Remember when Deputy Chefs only had one secretary and not a little army. Before the TRU was started, and the unless CAPS people, DOC unit and Accountability hacks?

Look for J-Fed to make every little BS unit that started up in the last 10 years have to got back to the Districts and D-Units when FLAS goes into full effect! Dics assigned to Districts! Purge HQ of every PO with less than 20 years on the job, but that will not happen. Look for the city to put out revolver guys and let Ken or Barbie doll with less than 5 years stay because he or she has a daddy or mommy as a boss somewhere on the job!

This is all crap! The TRU unit should all go back to every district an form rapid response cars! That’s sector cars to us older guys. All the Dics back to D-Units, elimination of the CAPS, DOC, and accountability officers back to cars, along with all of those secret squirrel units.

Vote in the FOP election or don’t bitch about it. Please don’t vote for the do nothing or nut job groups!

UNKNOWN FACT:

The U.S. Justice Department was about to move on the CPD to place it into DE JURE federal receivership.

Barring a corruption conviction, this would have been the ultimate embarrassment to Richard M. Daley.

Instead, the mayor was granted but one option: DE FACTO federal receivership.

Left with no choice, he sought out a FBI retiree for superintendent. His first "choice" was a former African-American FBI agent who declined. His second choice was J.P. "Jody". Weis.

To quote radio newscaster Paul Harvey, now you know "the rest of the story."

This isn't just a question of fitness. Sure, a lot of us are overweight, but there's also a lot of us that have developed other physical problems too. Arthritis, bad backs, bad knees, bad hips, etc. I suppose there are a lot of reasons for it, but I believe the main causes are the 20 pounds of equipment we carry, getting in and out of a car dozens of time a day, continually being in the burning sun or the freezing cold, foot chases, fights, old injuries, falls on the ice or the unshoveled stairs, etc. The list goes on. Multiply that times 20+ years, and it takes a toll. The average Fed, our boss included, doesn't get exposed to those kinds of things. If he wants a fit department, then he needs to recognize that the average P.O. who has worked a beat car for decades is pretty well beat up. Then he needs to recognize that most overweight P.O.'s are not fat becasue they're lazy, but because of the cards that life has dealt. Finally, he needs to recognize that being physically fit in and of itself does not make a better P.O. I'd rather work with one fat copper who knows his/her job than to work with 20 trim and fit idiots. Hey boss, want to have physical standards? Do it! Just convince the powers that be that the average P.O. is used up after 20 years, and change the retirement package to 20 years of service, and out with max benefits.

No disrepect to the police (because it was a two-way street game-the cops would sneak up on us in the 60's-70's for drinking and we would try to outrun them) but when we were kids we would love seeing cops like that at the park because we knew they wouldn't even try to catch us.

I've been working a beat vehicle for the past 25 years, My first 13 years were working shifts around the clock every 28 days 6 days in a roll. Lets talk about fucking up your body.We can start with sleep deprive, One time after working midnights I had court at 26th street where I passed out because I had no Sleep for over 22 hours do to a late job the day before. Late jobs that cause you to work into and through the next shift, changing your day off so that you have to work up to 9 days without a day off, changing your shift causing you to leave your part time job(money gone) stress from the job along with family problems as you never see your kids or wife. Eating at fast food joints all the time along with eating if you can 30 minute meals??? (restaurant) How the hell can you eat right after observing a body or two that has been laying around for 5 days??? I can go on and on the Public doesn't get it.

3/08/2008 01:14:00 AM

Great idea and a good perk. If I owned a fitness center having a stream of cops in and out all day might make other customers feel a lot safer.

Probably cut down on the steroid trafficking also (c'mon, we all know it goes on).

This job has put many of us in bad health. How can you require someone to pass a fitness test that has been injured because of this JOB. Wearing 10 pounds of weight on your upper body (vest, gun belt etc) doesn't help the back, knees or ankles. Sitting in a squad car 8 hours a day with seats that don't have back support doesn't help the back and will not help with the sit & reach. Chasing after some schmuck and injuring an arm or shoulder will not help with a bench press. Injuring a ankle, knee or back will not help with a mile and 1/2 run. This Dept is what f*ed many of us up and you want to "require" fitness tests???? Gimme A Break!

Recently the Superintendent was interviewed on Channel 11’s “Chicago Tonight” program. The interviewer asked him if he intended to establish some sort of physical fitness requirements. His response was a categorical “NO.” He said he’d like officers to establish their own regiment towards a healthy lifestyle. Oh well.

I'm glad to see that he's pushing mandatory pyhysical fitness. It's about time. I've been an advocate of this for years. Some of us look disgusting - 20 lbs. of potatoes in a 5 lb sack, thats what some people look like.

**Fuck off Idiot. Did you ever think that SOME PO's can't work out much due to past injuries or health reasons??? Keep doing what you're doing Have At It. Don't dictate what YOU think someone else should do. We are not all in the same boat as you. And I am not some fat ass. I do work out but I'm not going to lecture everyone else about what they should do. There are legitimate reasons why people cannot work out the way they should.

Dear Jody,
You have no clue what it is to be a cop. You are a Daley puppet who is steadily throwing the last hint of morale in the garbage. First, take bosses, shake their hand and stab them in the back with the other. Bosses who were the police and gave a crap about us. Next push a 12 hour day. That would be perfect. Work 12 hours, go to court for anywhere from 3 -6 hours. Then go home and 3-4 hours and star over again. But don't forget we have to work out and be healthy, so now we only get 2-3 hours sleep. But if you can stay awake, you will be healthy. You will just collapse and go on the medical from exhaustion or stress.
Jody because you wear a uniform, you have no clue what it is like to be a cop. Unless you start from the bottom and do the work we do from start to finish, you will never understand. You go to roll calls and hear the issues, but do you listen. Work midnights or afternoons with us for a couple of months, go to court with us and then to our second job. Then you might have a handle on things. Plus you can see first hand the fine vehicles we drive, that are garbage cans with 100,000 plus miles, the radios that go dead after a couple hours and the PDT's that are slower than a commodore 64, if they work at all. It's easy to sit in your office and make decisions without a clue. Try walking in our shoes and then come up with your brilliant ideas.

I stop at the Academy to eat lunch sometimes. The "vendeteria" was re-done and all the vending machines are filled with chips & fat foods. It would have cost $ to actually make it a "cafeteria" where healthy food could be served and po's could eat without being bothered by the public. It's all about the Money!

It's interesting to me this emphasis on fitness. I think some sort of fitness program would be good, especially if they give us time to work out while on duty like they give the Fed's and in L.A. However, what about an emphasis on training. I can't remember the last time I went back for real in-service training like street stops, officr servival, etc. I went once where I went in a simulator and got ping pong balls shot at me, it was fun and good training. I went to the one where there is like a movie too and it is a shoot don't shoot senario, it was good too. How bout training for the mind and safety.

Rumor has it J-FIT is going to have all the supervisors report to our lunch locations to ensure that we are eating healthy food. If not the bosses are to SPAR us. Also, a order will be coming out that will list that we cannot eat at certain locations due to it serving unhealthy food (Jimmy's Hot dogs, etc)
3/08/2008 05:09:00 AM

One half hour for lunch - where do you go that you can get in and out? Thats right buck-o, some place fast food like. If we had an extra 15 minutes of city time added, I might be able to eat my salad/soup, without having to take it back to the car. And take it to the car you will... Recently [again] hear a 8600 unit ask my status, the zone replied that I still had 6 minutes and 43 seconds on my lunch. Stress? Not from doing the job, but from having Asswipe inspector/stalker units. Maybe its because my partner is a well build female type... Inspector - Shes Gay, tough and a good copper, nothing here for you leave us the Fuc. alone.
Speaking of being left alone and stress.. Your'e inhaling lunch and here arriving the goof at your booth to talk... I'm going to make a sign, if you have been shot[today], stabbed [within the hour], the resturant is being held up or a kid out front got hit by a car - YES, TELL US NOW.
However... If you want to talk about the new super, an article you read in the Scumtimes, a parking/traffic ticket you got last week or why your old lady/man left you - LEAVE THE AREA NOW, we don't want/need to hear it. Catch us in 6 minutes and 43seconds, when ass wipe 86xx will be looking us over by our squad.

They Back peddled on what the standards should be when they realized their clouted, do nothing sgts couldn't pass the test. When a few still couldn't pass the lower standards they gave them a secret test that nobody else observed. Guess what, A Miracle Happened, They Passed! Two packs a day and they passed! The first thing Jody should understand is that he is not in charge of our personal lives! If you want to workout fine, if you don't fine! He makes 315k a year and is care free. Most P.O.'s have a different set of issues. He is on a health and stop drinking kick. I'M ALL FOR ENDING DUI'S, but I'm an ADULT and if I want to drink in a bar I will! I'M not going to drive drunk but I will drink if I choose to! CPD has much deeper issues, most of us don't get along. Boss vs. P.O., Unit vs. Dist, Vets vs. Slick sleeves, and the ever present White vs Black. This guy should work on uniting the Dept and lifting morale. In the event he continues pushing stupid shit like attempting to control the men and women of the CPD. Morale will hit an all time low and it will be a long, hot bloody summer! This summers double feature will be "Welcome to the murder capitol" and "How stupid is Jody?!"

Holy “Crooked Learning Curve” Batman!!!

Is this were experience, organizational knowledge, and political suave disappear?

Does experience have any relevance in leading an organization?

Ever ask why we need unions? Now...more then ever! Inform your unions reps of what is happening in your unit and let your fellow officers know by posting it on SCC!

For those of you who have a spot you want to protect. Guess what? If you can’t run a couple miles in a few minutes you just got fucked! Is working tact/gang or a special unit that important to you? Ask yourself if you get a couple of excessive force beefs within five years and the new Bureau of Professional Standards wants a suspension? Do you have a family to support, a mortgage to pay and all those dam credits cards?

The exempts selected to assist J-fed are political babies loyal to the Daley machine. They too must walk the balance beam since they’re obviously are not trusted members of the inner circle and yet they got to produce. Guess what? J-fed’s contract is only three years? Da Mayor ain’t going to live forever. Ask yourself is working a 60-70 hours a week, the Blackberry going off every minute, and the rank-n-file having even less than a little respect for you worth it? How about when three years from now you walk into a NEW Superintendent’s office only to get dumped just like the bosses you are witnessing now?

I can wait this one out for three years, can’t you?

FYI to all. Health is an issue with the hrs we work and the shit we eat. we get 30 min lunches, not exactly a lot of time to eat great. But if u try to control your eating habits, even without a lot of time to work out u will greatly improve your health and probably notice the belt size dropping. Try eating a GRILLED chicken sandwich, eliminate the fries and onion rings and try a salad. Hey I know the healthy shit doesnt taste as great but fact is you WILL feel a lot better. Maybe bring a protein bar to work and eat it in the car or some fruit to snack on instead of the shit candy or chips isle at 7-11. Believe me, if u make these minor changes, you will notice the difference even WITHOUT working out much. I do understand that its not easy to get to a gym a lot. Try working midnights 6 days a week, have kids at home with a wife that works days. That means u have kids all morning after getting home from work and on no sleep. Then the older kids get home from school and have after school sports or activities that you WANT to get to, rather than be at a gym. J FED is in a fantasy world if he thinks its easy. Well I guess if I made 350k a yr, had a wife that was a personal trainer and NO KIDS then maybe it would be easy!!!!!

Well, I was wrong! This new guy is NOT qualified to be the head administrator of this job. He has taken all his play policemen out of the plastic bag and is playing with them like the junior "G Man" that he is. For 300,000.00 + a year, any moron can reshuffle the deck and make it look like he is doing something. We need to start caring about the beat copper, they are the ones that pay in the end. The organization of Booze, Allen, Hamilton did a multi-million study of the Chicago police department and recommended that Gang Crimes be disbanded. Then they went to New Orleans and recommended that they make a unit like it (again millions of dollars). We adopt "caps" and spend millions of dollars on it. All we did there is invite the fox into the hen house. caps allows every felon/gangbanger to know the ends and outs of our job, as in what we need for a warrant and probable cause. We let civilians work in records and our internal offices. Beat meetings, where they actually stand up and scream at the coppers, right or wrong if you say anything back your going to do time. We need the high school graduate and the college graduate, but we need them working towards the same goal, not thinking that one is better than the other. Both have things that they are better at. Don't look at the new boss in "awe" because he is former f.b.i. better to look at him as "aw shit"! This guy wouldn't know a bad guy if he were to bite him on the ass. Lets run a seat belt mission or an outdoor roll call, that will reduce murders in the city. Anybody with the power to change this, won't, because they don't want to be called out for it, even though they know its bullshit. Don't chase its a property crime, don't shoot you might not hit him in the front, don't beat the guys ass that just spit in your face, you will ruin our image. You have done the job for over 200 years, lets try and do it with your hands tied. We need new gun laws? Why don't we try something new and enforce the laws that we have! (a new concept) How about we try NOT writing tickets and see if that has any effect on crime. Probably not but watch them scream. Cut off the flow of money and your going to get attention. Thats it I'm done, now I'm going to open a brand new bottle of Dewars.

These "Uber-Police" proposals of fitness is quite scary in that what about the policeman who has 20 years on, is a war veteran suffering from asthma, a family to support …. Yeah sure he's a good cop on the street but now he needs to prove himself at track …. I'm trying to picture this, getting SPAR'ed for this, a little more stress as he wonders how to support his own, or perhaps even collapsing dead after the run … what a lawsuit! ….. Yes fitness is good….. this is starting to sound like County (but on the inside) …..oh and is Reverend Meeks now the police spokesman? What happened to Camden or Bond (the "other Italian gal")? He's on every police news story I've seen so far.

Jody is rapidly losing his credibility with the press. If they had any respect for him they wouldn't be quoting Bella's comment: "J-Fed."

You are right to be pissed that Jody went out and got a CPD uniform and is wearing it around town. But he reminds me of the fakers who wear Silver Stars and Medals of Honor and who never served a day in a combat zone! So Jody is just disgracing himself.

Jody is a TV junkie. He's trying to make himself look good in his CPD costume and by crowing about being as thin as a New York model. Yeah, there's nothing wrong with staying in shape and a lot of people do work out but as you know it's an everyday struggle.

So I say this - let's try to stick together. There are a lot of vicious rumors and back-stabbing on this blog by CPD of other CPD. Yeah, you're letting out your frustrations. But let's not take it out on each other.

You know that copper in the Sun-Times picture? I'd rather have that big slice of blue backing me on a violent domestic than a primping little know-it-all ex-Fed CPD Wannabe in a rented suit!

3/08/2008 01:47:00 PM

Gee, thanks for the great advice. Let's see, my daughter's high school is 4 miles from my house and my two boy's go to a school 2 1/2 miles away. I guess if I don't have a late arrest I could get home by 7:30 AM and we could start out on the hike. Hmmm, if I work it right I could get back home just in time to start out again to pick them up. Nah, maybe I'll just let them go to school with the gangbangers and future dropouts at the schools within walking distance of my house. I mean, hey, I gotta run around the block...Wow...you got exactly 5 more years than I do...and you know so much, too...wow...

Dear Jody,
You have no clue what it is to be a cop.

3/08/2008 09:52:00 AM

DUDE YOUR HILARIOUS....I LOVE IT YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH....HEY LETS GO GET A BEER SOME TIME! YOUR FUNNY AS HELL. AND OF COURSE WE WON'T DRIVE HOME.

Okay, hon. Thanks for your input. Now will you please go find a nice little nurse blog and stay off this one? Yes, there are complainers here, but many of them have legitimate grievances. Like most nurses, you think you know everything, but you suffer from the Curse of Presumed Knowledge - and you don't know much about this job. (Yes, you heard right. Just because your man is CPD doesn't make you an expert.) The reason he makes more than you is because his job is the hardest to get but the easiest to lose. If YOU lose your job today, you can run right down the street to the next hospital and they will hire you starting tomorrow. The economy sucks, but the big nursing shortage is job security. Not so for a cop. It takes 2+ years to get hired. Thanks for appreciating us...

It is true that the job leads to bad eating which leads to weight gain which leads to high blood pressure and blockage of arteries which leads to higher medical, etc....
If you are serious about the well-being then listen to what Bella said and give us the avenue to combat it.
On the flip side if you are serious about our well-being , get the PO's that should be back on the street -back out there and not sitting on their tails in limbo due to some shit-bags beef that is not justified other than over-zealous shitty investiagtions conducted by Kirbys warriors that have so many holes they look like targets from the range.

You can write off a gym membership on your taxes as work related. Been on this job for 15 yrs. still wear same size uniform and in my 40's. Cut out the fast food. You will be surprised at how you can control your weight.
3/08/2008 09:19:00 AM
--------------------
This has beeen brought up before regarding telephones. Remember that only the amount of work related expenses, actually employee business expenses, which exceeds 2 percent of Adjusted Gross Income can be deducted. If you earn 75,000 dollars, only the amount exceeding 1500 would be deductible. And I would have my doubts about voluntary gym membership qualifying. That would be a bit of a stretch. No pun intended.

Quit whining about fitness standards! I am pretty sure it will be grandfathered in, so that all the people who can't spare two or three hours a week to work out won't be affected. But obesity in the United States is rampant right now. Our children are less healthy than we are, because when we were kids we didn't sit around and play virtual games -- we actually went out and made up our own games. Imagine that. Now the unhealthy American lifestyle is driving medical costs through the roof. We have an extremely stressful job. I think the proposed body fat measurement is a bit off the wall, but minimum fitness standards should be mandatory. And you don't have to be Shawne Merriman -- just get a little exercise. Don't let your resentment of the Superintendent's proposal keep you from feeling great about yourself. You will be amazed at what kind of results you get with just a little work. And exercise is cheaper than a shrink.

OFF TOPIC, Anyone watch the news and see J FED with Daley and the reverends at the church calling for yet another end to gun violence? Well he was in uniform and even appeared to be in a CPD leather! I thought he was only wearing the uniform for promotions, graduations, etc. Why is he allowed to wear a uniform? Maybe we should let the custodians that clean the stations get leathers now too? i mean they work in a police facility so we might as well let them dress the part right? Oh another rumor about the guy being named DC of 022! He is a member of the "church" at 95th and ashland and he is supported by the ghetto "reverends". He is being put there by Daley as a request from the fine reverends. Check it out, I know what im talking about. So to all of you who whine about the Irish that had clout and lots of boss positions, remember that as much as you hate the Irish, this department was great to work in 20 yrs ago, when the irish held authority positions. Remember the "good ole days?" I guess maybe you rather it the way it is today, with the so called "reverends" in charge. OKAY,
So the new Supt. likes workingout. He gets off on looking in the mirror and saying "yea baby, that's what I'm talking about".
He has plenty of time to do so, with no children.

Well, I get a thrill out of being my kids coachm going to their band concerts. I enjoy attending my children's academic competitions.
I do enjoy workingout, when I have the time.

I chose to raise a family. I receive the best currency of all, the love of my children.

I don't need money from the city to workout.

I do it for myself, of course I will not trun down the money.

If we get a Gay Supt. is he going to encourage us all to go Bisexual. "Give it a try"

Anyway. While I enjoying my kids sports, NOT WORKING OUT, I'll still get paid twice a month.

Now go do your push up Weis.

why shouldn't our officers be allowed to work out during their work schedule? nobody complains when our city is having financial problems & hikes taxes through the roof, yet our Mayor has THREE DRIVERS shuttling him around. What about other city workers/leaders that have other perks such as personal body guards, tickets to Wrigley, Black Hawks, cars that we pay for, and so on. How about a department nutritionist/dietitian available to us for free or at a severely reduced rate. How about the same for personal trainers. I've tried paying for the services of both and went broke in the process. I know it's a wet dream but I think that would help us all. How about his wife offer some classes and training to PO's at the academy for free. Just as the range is open for practice we should be able to go to the academy for physical training classes and refreshers on control tactics.

Don't forget that runtfuck with 4 fake stars most definitely takes a part of his PAID WORK DAY to go fuck off with his lifestyle choice in the 35th street gym. If this cocksucker can piss away tax dollars getting his little workout in during work hours, we should get no less, in fact, it's more necessary for street cops to get it than some civilian shithead who thinks he's a real cop who basically points and tell's someone else to work.

So what's wrong with being shape?

They're not asking you to run a mile in 3 minutes. You can make every excuse in the world, but 1 hour three days a week (is really all it takes) it's not going to kill you, it's going to do the exact opposite.

For those with a pessimist attitude, get off ur ass! Leaders lead, followers follow, babies cry.

If the proposal was more money in your bank account would you complain then?

As always, you have to look at the bigger picture, no matter how much crap is splattered on it.

Do any of you people out there know how bad it is for you to work out; then ,say ,go back on patrol?
Your body needs several hours to recover. If you work in fast district, your going to catch many diseases(strep, resp. infections)
touching these street mopes when your immune system is weak! Patrol
is hard work, and wears the body down over the years, thats why nobody w/clout does it.....

Fitness Standards would be a great thing for all of us. But instead of offering us at least 1 hour 4 days of our 6 day work week. They put one of us on the cover of the paper so every one can laugh and go the cheap way out. With suggestions of offering a little more cash bonus. Jody you are a real jerk to allow the press to continue this CPD bashing. If we are a para military organization that is going to hold it's employees to a higher standard of health. Then there is no reason why it's management is not allocating time during the work week to it's employees to keep up with it's standards. Can Jody name one organization that gives it's workers a responsibility that could lead to their release and no time during the work day to address it??? It takes a half an hour to 45 min a day plus the 15 min commute to the gym 3 to 4 days a week to keep up a descent physical health. So lets just say 3.5 hrs a week times 50 weeks (you took two weeks off). That's 1525hrs a year and their thank you is a couple hundred dollars. Which cost the city more giving us a couple of hours during the work week or paying a couple of hundred once a year. We all know the city knows that? If your going to point the finger at us and threaten employment then back it up with a fair deal or go home. All these comments about x amount of shit in a x amount bag. That is exactly what the city is doing with this problem until they either drop the issue or offer e real solution. Again I would love to have a fitness standard but you have to be out of your mind if you think your going to hold my job in front of me and not give me any work time or gym membership/facility to keep in shape. If this is the new way of doing things why should there be P.T. in the academy. Just give the power test and fight tactics test and go back to the class room. This may sound silly to all the do it for your health people, but my time is my time. That is the city's attitude and should be ours. We all know there is no future in "the company man" attitude with the city. That mentality is a one way road you give an the city takes. For me that's whats it's about giving the city what they give me. I enjoy going to the gym on my free time because I want to.

I thought it was interesting, the amount and emotional level of the responses to J-Fed's fitness ideas...first, I thought Bella's responses were passionate, but over the top (and I wonder, as an aside, why FOP hasn't been as passionate on other issues, like the pension, manpower, other contractual matters); 2) the guy (Weis) seems like he's trying to change the mindset when it comes to physical fitness; why beat the guy up about it before anyone has a chance to discuss the issues?; 3) it seems like he's (Weis)floating the issue, with a long lead time (a year in advance), and acknowledging that any changes would be grandfathered in (new hires first, "maybe" other standards applied to existing employees; 4) why not use this idea as a springboard to other ideas, such as 20 years and out, or...5) some may interpret Bella's comment as an excuse that working 6/2, shiftwork, with spouses, children and day care, court, second jobs, etc., etc., means...it's okay to get fat, be unhealthy, with a cholesterol of 900....will the FOP contribute to that inscription on your headstone?....It's YOUR life, YOUR body, you do what you want, you are responsible....

Actually "Jimmy's Red Hots" (Jimmy

3/08/2008 09:55:00 AM

BACK IN THE DAY THE ACADEMY HAD A KITCHEN WITH PEOPLE WHO COOKED MANY DIFFERENT FOODS , SOME HEALTHY
FISH, SALADS, SOUPS, CHICKEN , SOME NOT, BUT I THOUGHT THE FOOD WAS GOOD. BUT LIKE YOU SAID IT COSTS MONEY SO IT WAS ELIMINATED
SO NOW YOU CAN EAT CANDY BARS AFTER WORKING OUT IN THE NEW ACADEMY GYM , WHAT A BUNCH OF TOOLS!

3/08/2008 04:47:00 AM

You should advocate how a "AHOLE" as big as you can get a hat band around your hat. This is nothing but smoke!!! He can try and get something started with the newly hire.....but those who are already on this job are untouchable.....you can't fire them, force them on medical and keep paying them for months and months....don't think so. Funny how all of these self proclaim proto type cops like to believe that they are some sort of template for the all American cop.
I guess next, you'll want to stretch everybody so they can be.. 6'0 tall, follow by bleaching or dying everybody to have the same color...You like taking care of yourself GOOD do that and mind your own business, what other do is their business, their lives and their choices....not to be made by a dip shit like you

SWAT has come around 10 fold compared to what it was in the HBT days

Danny, you never would say that to Fred to his face...

Also would like to say that Serb ,though dry and whacked out of his mind, was a guy who was frikin dedicated to getting us the best stuff possible from gov funds. What he did behind the scenes deserved to be rocognized. The 09/11 stuff was his dedication as was the WMD's Though he would have died to be an operator LT.. I still must commend him for his work. Hope he does get his spot back because out of all the LT's there he deserves to be there the most.

Retired SWAT now SGT in a shithole whith a shithole boss and bitching P.O's

Danny, you were a court Jester to WG. You talked shit about JS every chance you got a chance. Hoping to get back there and take his place now? Retired SWAT get over yourself and start getting ready for a physical because you never passed the one Fred gave.

3/08/2008 05:57:00 AM

Ease off the poor guy, it's hard to live on 300 grand a year in Chicago with all the fucking taxes we pay. He is very qualified to wear the uniform. He watches every cop show on TV and learned everythibg about the job we do. What better training could he have. Excuse me now I'm going to have another greasy cheeseburger and a beer. Dear Jody,
You have no clue what it is to be a cop.

3/08/2008 09:52:00 AM

DUDE YOUR HILARIOUS....I LOVE IT YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH....HEY LETS GO GET A BEER SOME TIME! YOUR FUNNY AS HELL. AND OF COURSE WE WON'T DRIVE HOME.

3/08/2008 03:08:00 PM

Just telling the truth. I'd take Phil over this guy aby day of the week. By the way when we go out it can only be one beer. Don't want us to get into trouble. I'll bring an extra 55 gallon drum for you to drink that one beer.

He is and was a decent, hardworking, caring son, husband, father and police officer. He just didn't look the part of the fitness buff and never would make a recruiting poster.

I would rather have him working in my sector than some of these young wonderkids who lift weights, look good and are never there to back up their brothers in blue.

Fitness standards don't make a good policeman any more than the education requirement makes better recruits.

Both my parents worked, and yes, we also ate fast food when Mom didn't have time to cook. But "the neighborhood's not safe" and "I don't have time for exercise" are poor excuses for letting the health of oneself or one's children deteriorate. Stringent measures aren't necessary, but it seems as if just a little discipline will go a long way in dealing with the obesity crisis in this country. Please consider the above remarks as a general opinion of our country today.

I also saw our new First Deputy giving news conferences on a few major incidents. WOW!!!, I hear he is a nice guy and a real copper but DAM he should take a speech class and not look so nervous in front of the cameras. He is in the same ball park as Dana in giving interviews. I guess the only important thing is that he is the one the Reverends chose to be the second in command so we have just deal with it.

3/08/2008 03:44:00 PM

Haha. I saw that news conference myself and thought the same thing, but then I remembered how easy it is to get tongue tied when someone sticks a microphone and a bunch of cameras in your face. I retired from ISP as a supervisor and had a useless boss (a Lieutenant). One time I was with my guys at the scene of a shooting, helping secure the scene, gathering up witnesses and searching for evidence. I notice my boss talking to a reporter (Anita Padilla) for a few minutes and assume that he is giving her an interview, which is what he is supposed to do as the ranking officer on scene. No such luck. The guy calls me on the radio and tells me to come by his location, introduces me to Ms. Padilla, and tells me that I am giving an interview to the media. I did it reluctantly, and while I normally am a pretty smooth talker, I think I sounded like a tongue tied idiot that day. I will never second guess someone who has difficulty speaking on camera.
