More Cameras, but...

  • After an epidemic of school shootings and a bloody weekend for Chicago Public Schools students, Mayor Daley on Thursday unveiled plans to bolster school security by linking 4,500 school cameras to police districts, squad cars and the 911 emergency center.

Chicago's existing surveillance network includes more than 10,000 public and private cameras. Adding school cameras will boost that number by 45 percent, creating an integrated camera network that Police Supt. Jody Weis said has "evolved into a national model."

The $418,000 upgrade is being financed by federal Department of Homeland Security funds. It follows the shooting at Northern Illinois University and a weekend that saw four CPS students shot and killed and five others wounded in separate shootings.

Great. More cameras watching potential trouble spots. The only problem? No cops:
  • Frustrated aldermen Thursday demanded to know why the latest class of Chicago Police recruits were sent home before beginning their five months of training, contrary to Mayor Daley's promise to put 75 more officers on the street this year.

"I can't imagine the mayor's intention would be that the new officers not be on the street until, what, December?" said Ald. Marge Laurino (39th).

Seventy-five more officers? There are something like two classes in the Academy right now, not even one hundred recruits. Those that got sent home aren't going to be hired until May and who knows how many aren't going to show up after taking it in the ass from the City. Anyone want to guess how many retirements we're going to see this year? We average between four and six hundred. So we're looking at a net loss of a few hundred to say the least.

Red light tickets are expected to rise with the installation of 200 new cameras. We wouldn't be surprised to see the number of homicides climb at the same rate due to falling manpower numbers.

the departments throwing money everywhere to get these damn car cameras, school and pod cams up and running and yet i've operated a year without a damn pdt in my car. instead of attacking these monster million dollar projects maybe weis should secure equipment, get the new gun programs up and running for his troops first then worry about all the bells and whistles to boast to the papers and cater to the reverends about.

It doesn't mean a thing, if you saw the Sun Times headline Saturday morning. There was another student shot and killed with cameras and police around. The department responded by saying they possibly had a person of interest as a result of seeing them on one of the cameras. I say, who cares, so the cameras are to identify a person after the crime? This is a joke, when are the citizens of Chicago going to stand up to our mayor and ths new sup. and demand action. It seems to me the new guy is too concerned about our weight and incompetence than he is about kids dying, why doesn't this make the headline!! I would like to see the Sun Times have J-Fed on the front page answering questions about how he plans to combat the violence and not talk about how he is a bodybuilder and his wife a personal trainer. Hell if I had no kids made a ton of money and could work out and eat healthy all the time it would be great. He needs to realize we all have families, most of us work a second job just to be able to afford our homes and send our kids to a decent school since our public schools are a joke. He is so far removed from what the life of a police officer is, until he goes to work at midnight comes home and takes his kids to school, then goes to his 12.00 an hour side job until time to pick the kids up he will never feel for us or understand what it is like. And after all of this maybe you can lay down and get four or five hours of sleep before you can do it all over again.

One recruit group in the academy. The last recruit group that came in for training was at the end of October. So for the last 5 months, none have been hired to even make up for retirements.

5 MONTHS with NO NEW OFFICERS and they wonder why police service sucks and officers are stressed out. Figure it out People!

After watching robocop, Daley has granted a city contract to the producer of the movie. Plans are under way to use money saved by the canceling of recruit classes to fund the new physically fit versions of Robocops. Also a city contract has been granted to Saudi Arabia. Money will be invested using pension funds to furnish the oil needed for the project.

If they would expell these kids that cause this mayhem in our Public Schools intead of letting them run amok we would not have all these problems. Also I heard the incident that involved the choir boys at Crane was over grade point averages.

J fed has to keep bringing heated topics that put the policeman in bad light, that's all he knows how to do, he doesn't understand day to day operations, as a fed they had months to make their cases sometimes we have hours(48).
He is doing a fine job at keeping the p/o's fighting each other with his bullshit issues. Remember people its contract time, the city and j fed throw these bullshit issues at you and come contract negotiations your are willing to give up certain rights so some of these bullshit ideas dont come to fruition.
did you not see the article where fop pres. donahue said there is no way the fop would support mandatory fitness? well if the city decides to bring it to the table, we'll have to give something up to get rid of it or trust the arbitrator.
Come on people wake up, stop supporting Jfed with your bickering and start supporting your fellow p/os who have earned the right to wear the uniform!

I can understand why J-Fraud wants coppers in the guy. they would look better, just like FBI agents. You have to admit that most FBI agenst look in shape. Youu also have to admit that maybe less than 5% of them has ever made an arrest or ever will.

Just curious, how many ACTUAL arrests has J-fraud made? I dont mean like the usual FBI arrest where the local police do the actual arrest and then FBI takes credit in the papers.

In separate interracial homicides, a pair of lovely coeds from Georgia were shot and killed near the campuses of the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and Auburn University, Alabama.

In both cases, a camera photographed the separate murderers.

Just like in Robocop, privatize the police dept. Put out bids for a Company to run it and disolve the CPD.
I think Daley Jr. would be the perfect choice after he leaves the army with all that experience.

N0. It was over a "Buck Fifty". If you don't know what that is, it is a baseball hat with an authentic working timepiece in the front crown and sells for $150. That was what it was over. So drink your forty, wear your buck fifty and have some respect for the young man.
