Media Catches Up
When the latest class of Chicago Police recruits showed up to fill out the final paperwork before their training was to start last month, they got some surprising news.
They could go home, they were told. Class was canceled until further notice.
"Why are we going this far and suddenly they say, 'We can't give you a reason. We will call you. We're sorry this happened'?'' complained one recruit, who asked that his name not be printed.
On Wednesday, city officials confirmed the training class for some 50 recruits was postponed from Feb. 19 to May 19.
This story appeared in the comment section over a month ago. Various writers noted that with no recruits in the pipeline, retirements were going to outstrip hirings (again) and the acute manpower shortage that necessitates downing more and more beat cars is only going to get worse.
We don't believe for a second that they're going to be eliminating desk jobs anytime soon.

wow, if anyone buys the departments reasoning behind this one they must really be assholes. I feel for the guys and girls that quit other jobs to come and take this. They have felt what its like to be screwed by the city before even receiving ONE paycheck. Good Luck to them and their families, especially the ones with kids at home to support or tuition to pay. tough to do after you just quit a job. THE THE HIGHER UPS IN THIS DEPT AND CITY GOVERNMENT ARE ASSHOLES!!!!!!!

And the worst part of all of this? is the fact that there's monies budgeted for 13,000 + Policemen.

I just received my FOP newsletter to see a FULL PAGE (Page 10)devoted to an arbitration hearing concerning a grievance by a bunch of DOGASS desk personnel from the 006th District complaining about doing an interdepartmental MAIL RUN. Yes, that's right. While thousands of officers are answering calls every day these asshole desk do-nothings filed a grievance because they had to get in a squad car and deliver or pickup a bag of mail. Am I the only one who perceives this as a slap in the face to the all those officers who are out on the street doing their jobs with a minimum of back up cars? I'd like to know what it cost our union for this bullshit arbitration hearing, which they lost. If I were the commander I would put everyone of those who filed that grievance back in a beat car for a dose of reality. They should replace all desk personnel with civilians. WTF!!!

This comment isn't about their guilt or innocence.
It's about the sad state of affairs in our society today.

I read the Tribune article on line. Then I began reading some of the comments left by readers.
It is SAD, but we are so HATED as a group today. I think we are seen as lower than car salesman by the public.
Overwhelmingly, out of several hundred comments left, 80-90% were of the "all cops are crooks, or assholes, and should be in prison" variety!

It clearly states on the letter that by passing all of the tests it does not gurantee you will be hired. They should not have quit until they were totally sure they had the gig.

True story my Marine Corps buddy from upstate New York moved here I told him come to CPD I like it alright and the pay is a lot better than NYPD. He had to move here with all his stuff in his car, get an apartment in Chicago with a week's notice, took the final POWER test passed it no problem and was told he would be in the academy February 19. Then he was told sorry, no class its delayed indefinitely. He wasn't even told it would be in May he was told nothing. Now he has no job and $900 a month in rent, bought a city sticker, all that shit. If his savings run out he might have to bail on his lease I told him he could stay with me and my wife cuz the guy is just fucked I feel terrible for him.

Give it a break.....in a perfect world it would be 50 cops spread through 22 districts, divided by 3 watches. How much of a work load will they relieve from anybody. Maybe if you take less personals, the rest of the shift wouldn't feel overworked.

Voulgaris is a great guy no matter what you think about TRU. Sure he probably has some clout somewhere, and is known to be a ladies man, but he is a good cop, with a good resume. He is always at work (more than most commanders I'm sure) and he is really a nice guy. I think this shows that J-Fed is an arrogant smug little egomaniac who is out to show everybody that he runs this department no matter who he steps on. Voulgaris was the wrong guy to mess with. There are plenty of useless "affirmative action" bosses in the upper echelon that need to be demoted. I hade hoped that J-Fed would have brought much needed change to improve the department, but it looks like he is going to just push morale to an all time low and hammer anybody for any little mistake. Here's the thing.
There are two types of natural criminal acts, basically those acts which cause physical harm to others and those acts which deprive others of their property.
As in, Thou Shalt Not Kill & Thou Shalt Not Steal.
Whatever number of various means employed, these are the only two basic types of crime.
People, in general, if they are honest, understand the need for laws, and law enforcement officers, prohibiting all criminal acts that either cause another physical harm or deprive another of their rightful property.
Every law being enforced by law enforcement officers must pass the test, in the minds of the honest 'masses', of being a version of violating these two basic natural criminal acts.
Every law that does not pass this test, does not concern protecting the citizen from either being physically harmed or of having their property taken from them, is seen as being unfair, unjust, dishonest and despicable.
Picture the scale of justice, with the laws most honest people consider to be relevant to these two types of natural law on one side of the scale and the remaining laws on the other side.
With the knowledge possessed by those employed in law enforcement, determine which side of this scale contains more laws, which side of this scale contains more laws being enforced, and which side of this scale is responsible for whatever negative attitudes the general public may have for those who enforce same.
All that police officers have to do, to ensure the majority of the publics' support, is to enforce only those laws relevant to protecting the citizens from being physically harmed and/or having their rightful property taken from them.
The specific laws to be enforced, or not enforced, will be determined by each individual officer's definition of the appropriate use of 'discretion'.

I was at the Police/Fire comm. meeting today too and overheard the former CFD union boss asking, no, begging the Fleet commissioners to give fuel to our canteen volunteers so they can keep their vans running. These are the guys giving us coffee and etc.. I know one of them is even one of us. Can you believe this shit from this crooked truck for hire city people? And when Laurino brought up the S/T article he said it also happened to a group of CFD recruits who now have a lawsuit. They never did get the job. Nice going Richy.

1001a.m., you obviously don't understand the contract or bid positions (the desk is a BID position, filled by seniority). The grievance was not about the mail run, but about the commander interpreting a directive by the ads as his whim to use the people with the most seniority rather than his personal pets in his administrative staff. Once you understand seniority/contract rights, you will understand that grievance was placed because once you let the employer violate such agreements, you set a precedent allowing the employer to continue. The desk personnel you are berating are all people who did not work inside until they got there on a BID. That grievance was filed because that happens to be a commander who continuously does whatever he wants, regardless of contract issues.Read the article again, he was given a play by the arbitrator and he turned right around and did it his own way, again, even though he has a bloated administrative staff. Learn how to read between the lines. Maybe when you get some time on, and get a spot by seniority, not by kissing up, you will also understand that a cmdr. (even though he really wants to put his own picks in a spot) he can't touch certain spots.

Wrong, they aren't Chicago Police. You see we have these people called inspectors who's job it is to write us up. You see they go through our parking lots and look for such things like that.
So I think you have it wrong. Of everything, our vehicle licenses are squared away.

I've pulled a couple of these people over with these expired commemorative plates (the two month plates). Have seen these plates with the legit state sticker put on them. Turned out the drivers of these vehicles aren't the police but gang bangers. They put these plates on there cars so the real police thinks they are ythe police also. Also, these plates cannot be run through LEADS. It's a good PC ticket for impropered display of plates.

It clearly states on the letter that by passing all of the tests it does not gurantee you will be hired. They should not have quit until they were totally sure they had the gig.

WRONG! You are not allowed to have another job while in the Academy. Therefore, if you were told to report to the Academy to start your first day of training,you should have quit your previous job.
No matter what anybody thinks, Jody won't be around for any longer than his 3 year contract. There's one reason why most Chicago Top Cops are promoted from the ranks - this isn't a job you can do effectively if you're not familiar with it. Jody thinks he can do the job AND learn it at the same time. Won't work; it never has. Feds come from an entirely different world and what works there doesn't work in a municipality. In the Army when you got a green second lieutenant who was an asshole you always tried to get him to walk point because he wouldn't last long. Well, the midget and his crooks got Jody walking point. He's a green dope who thinks his feeb years make him smarter than most. But I predict that by the time his three years are up he'll be so confused he won't know whether to haul ass, kick ass, or kiss ass.

What the hell is going on in Edison Park? I've worked in 016 for years and I have never seen it get so bad with the thugs? Stopped one and he said he lived in Cabrini but building was knocked down. You are forced not to give previous job any notice until you start academy. I would not even trust a acceptance letter from city until the first day. Even then they might cancel the class. Of course, there is a hiring freeze so who cares. Maybe new recruits in sept. In the meantime, instructors out on the street. Boredom is a killer.
Off Topic, What the fuck is up with that 011th district midnight gang team? They're all a bunch of hair gel wearing asshole two year wonders. I was assigned in the 10th district a couple of weeks back and overheard the only fat and bald one talking about how great and how much of a know it all he was. And to top it off he said this while trash talking his own guys saying how much better than them he was. How he could be the SGT in charge. And that woman should not even be on the job. What class. How about a class in civility. You may have endured the FBI Academy in Quantico and no one here is taking that away from you. But you did not endure The CPD Academy. Maybe in that eliteist mind of yours your showing off to your other FBI- friends (sure) THAT YOU ARE A 4 STAR GENERAL wearing the uniform of the Chicago Police Department. all you have done is made a poser and pretender of yourself. O.W. Wilson came along the same way you did. He made changes that affected the entire department they way you are. But one thing was for sure, O.W. WILSON never pretended to be a Chicago Police Officer. He was the Suerintendant, the boss, the head honcho, the rule maker and the rule enforcer, he wasn't a poser or a pretender. The simple thought is that he was respected for being the Administrator of this department. He helped to develope this department in a more positive and professional department. O.W. WILSON was respected. All you will do is "piss off" the men and women of this department by making a clown of yourself. Uniform does not make a police officer. How does JF and Abbate, who wore the uniform show respect for those who died? Many goofs in uniform. Instead, he is making necessary changes to clean up the horrible mess from last administration. Uniform does not make us and this, again is a complete nonissue. O.W. Wilson was not the police in any manner and was a college professor. J-FED was the police. Really, get a life and let this argument rest.
