Morale Up or Down?

From the comments:
  • Morale is at an all time low and all these changes are making it a lot worse.
Morale has been low, no argument there. Changes making it worse though? We don't know about that. It's provided more entertainment than we've had in a decade at the very least. The only ones suffering are those who have been attached by the hip or lip to various political animals for the duration of their careers. They're the ones scared to go back to Patrol, frightened of the streets, glorified secretaries with guns who never were or never tried to be the police.

As for the changes, we think the same way about the Department that we feel about politics - change isn't all bad. A shake up of the status quo can be good in the long run. This Department has been too hidebound and too ossified for too long. It wasn't in a rut, it was in a trench, and a damn deep trench at that.

The only trouble is how deep the calcification goes. We have a layer of merit and political hacks that runs pretty deep and this scraping J-Fed is doing might not be deep enough to effect real and lasting change.

Morale is just a tad higher since Jody started. Just my thought. I like that he is throwing different ideas out there even if there is no possibility of them i.e. 12 hour days and mandatory fitness. It shows he is willing to change or at least think outside the box and that is what he need in our leader.

All I need for morale to go through the roof is a new work schedule. 6 and 2 needs to changed immediately.

Tobias is just hoping to be be back on the streets. Maybe he'll learn what it's like to be a PO. At least he'll keep his job for another day.
Or not?

Morale is low because some of these bosses are heartless bastards like O'Keefe. His own staff can't stand him because he treats them like shit.
I don't think he got memo on how bosses should be the example for how someone is to be treated. The way he belittles and treats people is absolutely uncalled for. I waiting for him to beat up a female bartender.

To all the goofs who are stating that the LT & SGT's test are coming down...WRONG. CITY HALL controls the testing and hiring process not the CPD. It costs money to give a test...the CITY sent home recruits last month because THEY HAVE NO MONEY TO PAY FOR TRAINING & PAYING THEM!!! The city is being shaken by the ammount of money it has to pay out for snow removal due the harsh winter. So shut up about tests being taken down, and try studying next time ;3 years from now.......

Disinformation? Which rumor? Most of it was correct - Volgaris, O'Donnell, Caluris, Egan, Kolman, Carroll, Chiczewski, Rosebrock. All those were spot-on.

Remember, we're the only Department that ran a "Rumor Central" hotline for years. Rumors have been around longer than us...and evidently a LOT longer than you.

It all depends if the Command changes has an effect on you or not.

I hope J-Fed gets rid of and makes more Commander changes here in HQ.

Another useless ass Commander that needs to go is that Commnader Jonathon Lewin another "Phil Cline hack"!

What a 'Nitwit"!

He has the personality of a buffoon!

He has no people skills or management skills whatsoever!

He has his own social agenda to promote and if your NOT part of the click then you don't stand a chance of getting a promotion nomination by him!

His Detective, Sergeants and Lt.'s nominations are based on friendships and favors, rather the bonafide credentials!

Hey J-fed check out his last few Merit nominations and call him on the carpet about them and then compare that to other folks Resumes in the units he oversees! This being said, it does NOT matter how hard you work to make a success within these Units, it is how well you blow him!

He is by far the most unfair boss, I have seen yet down here and takes credit without giving credit to the hard workers in his Units, who makes his ass look good!

So Morale under Units 125, 133, 134 175, 376, is in the toliet because of this goof!

Hey J-fed get rid of this "Phil Cline Hack"!

We have the Mayor with more control over the Dept. than ever. Some dumps good for the Dept., some bad. But he don't have a clue what he is doing and it will start to show. These FBI guys wearing the uniform, makes me sick and most of other real police I talk to. This thing with the new recruits being delayed untill May is a travesty, and also means more shortages on the street. How come so far only 2 minority exempts have been demoted. Shields, Brown, Doty, Williams and Green are still here and may be promoted. They tout this 12 hour day as the cure for morale. 12 hours in Englewood? 12 hours in Harrison? 12 hours in lots of places. What about that 3rd day after you just finished 8 and have 4 more to go. (10 hour days are the way to go).

Grau, Vulgarous, Risley, should not have been treated the way they were treated. These FBI guys think driving around on the West side on Friday night makes them the POLICE and gives them wisdom and experience of a real cop. NOT.

Not my morale is just as low as before, and going down.

376 morale is in the toilet because it's 376. what he hell is there that would put you in a good mood. Coppers on the brink of losing the job? pregnant women? medical roll?
Exclude 376 from the morale meter.

Morale used to be great. no one wanted to leave, we loved the job. Now it blows. Look at the Capts and Lts. they are a MAIN reason for morale being good or bad. If you have a good captain or Lt that could make or break a watch. Look at 025 days. It was a great watch, now Fagiano single-handedly destroyed it. It shows you that if the captain is a loser with no self respect, he will utilize the only power he has in life to make work miserable.
Anyone above the rank of commander eally has no effect on the rank and file unless they start fucking with your unit bosses, then it trickles down. Kinda like reaganomics for morale.

Anyone who has been around for any amount of time is somewhat disappointed in the manner the demotions are being handled. We all understand any boss has the right to name their own team. Complain as we might this is still their prerogative. The rub comes from the manner its being done. Word has it these folks are called in and given the bad news. No discussion as to the decision’ rationale, no opportunity to refute any mis-information – just a “Wham Bam Thank You Mam” and out the door. These folks – no matter what you may think of them – deserved better. Each of them has devoted years of service to the Department. I’m sure each of them had a relationship with someone whose star is in the Honored Star Case. Like it or not each of them did their duty.

Don’t know this to be a fact but a 35th Street source told me Commander William O’Donnell walked into the Superintendent’s Office with a big smile on his face - extended his hand and said “nice to finally meet you, did you have something on your mind?” Way to go Bill. After he was summarily dismissed I heard that Jim Carroll extended his hand to everyone as he left the 5th floor in truly a classy manner. Say what you will about him, in my book he was always a gentleman. And no I never worked for any of the victims of this Palace Coup.

As far as the theory that only Cline appointees are being singled out. Remember, Rosebrock has been exempt for I believe 7 to 8 years -appointed by Hillard. NOTE: another source tells me that Rosebrock’s numbers at 019 were better than the former Commanders of 010 and 011. I guess older – overweight – bald – white guys - need not apply, no matter how competent and capable. Don’t fit the mandated Mayoral demographics. Same for O’Donnell - was Hillard’s Administrative Assistant before being sent to 018. Rumor has it both had offended Peterson in some manner.

Once again I must put the disclaimer of this being non-verifed information. However, the sources have been 100 % accurate in the past.

Morale is non-existent! It is really interesting to me that po's can get stripped over 2 muts that are looking at dollar signs and beef and have a total of 36 arrests, but a sexual harassment type beef of an exempt gets over-looked and he gets promoted.

A quick morale question for the new boss- how come a meritless CR# from IAD takes 2 weeks from start to threatening with time, while department awards like life saving awards are over 30 months in arrears. Our unit had 2 guys never get their little "ATTA-BOY" ribbons for a job well done. One retired and the other [RIP Mac] caught cancer and died horrably. Come on Boss, suit-up, shake a couple of working POs hands and take a picture with them holding their kid. You might just make a couple of people feel OK about doing the job again.
Don't be like Charlie Williams was, who wouldn't talk to a PO walking by in a hallway.

All this talk about morale, work schedule, cameras, computers, fitness, blah blah blah

WE DONT HAVE A CONTRACT

Our current benefit package is terrible, for anyone with a family its even worse

Why dont we start discussing relevant topics, the reason we all work is to make money, are there any proposals that could possibly help us survive financially.

Our health and dental insurance really needs to be improved, I know that CPD has one of the youngest personnel and a lot of these topics arent important to them right now, but we are losing more and more in benefits.

All this smoke and mirrors about fitness and changing the work week is meaningless. The city throws some bone our way, we jump all over it but miss the real meat that they leave on the table.

Lets put more pressure on the FOP at the meetings, lets get our real needs met and forget about all this other fluff, we all knew how the system worked when we signed up.

Here’s my two cents worth for what they’re worth…

Someone is leading Weis in these decisions, and while I don’t know who it is, this person is a direct link to the mayor and is at Headquarters in a trusted advisory role to Weis. The mayor has wanted to get rid of a whole bunch of people he was forced to get promotions for and finally found a way to do it without pissing off his financial backers that he owed favors. He appoints the new guy, an outsider with an I don’t owe nobody nothin’ attitude so when his backers call beefing he can just say there’s nothing he could do about it.

Weis is a pawn in the mayor’s game of chess that has been led to believe he’s either a bishop or king. In typical Daley fashion he has this puppet doing exactly what he wants without the puppet even knowing the strings are attached.

Weis’ plan is divide and conquer, and everyone of us are falling right into it. Each move he makes or possible idea (12 hr shift, fitness standards) brings more and more reaction both for and against, building an even bigger wall between take your pick, hair gel police and dinosaurs, headquarters’ personnel and beat cops, the real police and people in units or slower districts, the list goes on.

And what’s the end goal of all of this? Daley will have just cause to get rid of Weis when the stats keep rising, morale keeps tanking, and all of his minions are in place. Once he gets rid of Weis, wonder boy Huberman will be appointed because of his vast experience running the CTA and knowledge of the police department and won’t have to make any command changes because the puppet already took care of everything.

Huberman will then make the same empty promises he made while at OEMC that never came to fruition, and we’ll all be in lock step because we’ll be so relieved Weis is gone. I give all of this about a two year window. Thank God I’ll be KMA by that time, because there is no way I will ever work under Huberman.

Don't worry.....can't afford to get them in the cars anyway....can't even afford fucking computers....and if you can get a computer what is the likelyhood that it works properly. radio batteries cant hold a charge of more than 2 hours....starts chirping right away. They would rather spend money on bullshit like light up beat tags, swipers and that Oh so important station paint job for when J-FED comes to visit.

Another reason we can't afford shit is because the city is so quick to settle lawsuits that are winnable because they say it is "cost effective". BULLSHIT....still paying city attorneys whether in court or not. People know this and are suing like crazy....they see the city as "Deep Pocket Chicago" and are going after us.....and for such unprovable bullshit.....stressing our P/O's and their families.

We give the city billions if not trillions of dollars every year with tickets we write....save your parkers, anov's, movers, BA books for a year and tally it up.....then multiply that by 8,790 (because that's really how many we have out there....not that mysterious 10,500 or so) then divide by 2 (gotta count for dismissed tickets) that is a WHOPPING number.......covers way more than my PISS ASS salary.

I'm so poor I can't even afford to pay attention.......I wish the UNION would realize that we can ask for more than 6% over 3 years......Go for 20% or more, shit how about 50% and battle it out....

All you fucking crybabies who bitch about J-Fed wearing the uniform need to get a fucking life.

He got certified as a peace officer in Illinois, so he can wear the uniform like any other outsider hired as a chief. He only wears it for ceremonial purposes anyway, so it's OK with me.

The back stabbing and hateful comments on this blog are worse than the shit you'd hear from a 7th grader. Grow up!

He'll make changes just as any boss does. The important things are to keep your noses clean, do your job the best you can and back each other up.....then go home to your families.

Quit worrying about petty bullshit.

What morale? At first I wasn't bothered by this Fed wearing the uniform but when I see this goof at an anti gun rally with Daley and see him now wearing the field uniform, a leather jacket I must admit this guy is a complete jag off. First he promotes Shields and now wears several versions of our uniform so what is this asshole gonna do about morale? Not a thing he is first and foremost a Fed which means he never was, will be or has been the police. On a side note will somebody tell Duncan to worry about the CPS grades and drop out rate and not worry about gun control which is something he obviously knows nothing about. Hey wait until St. Jude by then the Fed will have given himself some awards so he can have a chest full of ribbons on the uniform he never earned.

You need to understand the city of Chicago doesn't want you to be the police . They want you to be a post active police officer. going after "bad Guys " causes law suits which the liberals give money to the "bad guys " and YOU lose your job! I've got almost 20 years on this job and agree with what this p.o stated. Remember, being a "WORKING" police is great but when you lose your job,it means nothing!! People like the "dog" and myself will always back you up! We just learned it isn't worth losing your job and family to a bunch of liberals who hate us anyways.

If I run for mayor will you support me? If I run for alderman still will you support. We need an army of workers committed to changing our City’s government. We need you to run for office along with others, we need term limits, we need to change on how our elected officials receive campaign contributions, how areas of this City are Zoned, licenses and permits are issued, fairness in the work place not just City workers but all those who labor in this City, we need methods of securing that our hard earned tax dollars are not being stolen by corporate friends of the current administration. We need change, we need a political platform to run on. We have three years to begin our challenge and eight to effectively achieve our goal. Once we put the legal measures in place, we may return to our normal lives. Do it for the sake of our child, our City and their future. Once we parish from this earth we will never have this chance again.
This is our 911 call and we need YOU to make an act of self sacrifice. Let justice, patience and commitment be our foundation. Run for election. Support those who do. Every ward and mayor. We can celebrate during the Olympics to those politically defeated. Indictments will follow all those who are in office. Run for county office, judgeships, and governor. We can win!

I agree with someone from tru who said they were trained by officers with 1 or 2 years on. That is true across the board, and it isn't their fault.

It started in 1986 with mass hiring of 200 per month. Kids had to partner up with kids. 10 years later hillard starting making these kids commanders, and clien only made it worse. I always said that was the beginning of the depts downfall.

My last count was 16 open spots. The Distircts are already short Lieutenants. Ok, you take the Lieutenants, when are you going to promote more. Ok, you promote more, why don't you encompass that number when you do this Sergeant promotion so we won't be back to the drawing board once this is said and done? It doensn't take a Rocket Scientist, just a P.O. from 008 to point out the obvious.

The thrill is always to see if you can get a new battery before you get banged or redlined, or if the inspector can sneek around and follow you for some gradeschool BS infraction (35 min. lunch), 20 min. personal.

Plus my boss always tells me, if you don't like it. quit. He sure knows how to boost morale while he watches TV in his office, while the desk crew are afraid to tell him what's going on (the radio), or ask why he has to see his girlfriend every night for 3 hours.

Demoting a slew of bosses will not bring morale up. Going to visit a few coppers and talking about all the changes you will make does not either.

Giving us a descent raise, giving us the option of the extended tour, making mid level bosses lives less stressful so they can stop stressing us out, giving us equipment that actually works, and considering the fact that when we cannot get time off for family events, to take our kids places, go pick up report cards etc., that fact bothers our kids too. So when you see a coppers kid fucking up, think back to this job, how they treat us, how little we are allowed to conrol our own lives, how miserable the things are we see everyday and then we go home, look at our wives and kids and when they say, how was your day, you say I saw 3 people shot, 1 raped, 1 child abused, a drunken W/C bitch at us and I policed the most depressing area in the city. How was yours?

By the way honey, since gas prices are so high and we can't afford to live in a descent neighborhood and I got 1.5% raise, we will have to take the kids out of private school, sell one of the cars and if I get a third part time job, we can keep the house! Thanks Mayor for putting the money where we really needed it!

CPD, why don't you bitch about that fact!

Training new recruits is crucial for the future of this department. Yet, the FTO program is in shambles. No leader and bosses who treat FTO's very poorly. In other departments, a FTO is treated with respect. Here, very poorly. Bring in new leadership for FTo's and offer support in districts for FTO's. As a FTO, more training for us would be nice.

Been on the job for 17 years and have seen many changes. The morale on this job is at an all time low. I have marched in St Jude parade every year except one due to death in family. I will always respect this day since I knew and worked with a few of the officers who have died in the line of duty. This year however my plan is to visit the memorial with my family on the day before and pay my respects. I REFUSE to march or salute this new boss. I am a working stiff who is not out of shape and used to love this job. After seeing the front page of the Sun Times, it pretty much made it a no brainer to boycott the march.

Please consider the same and visit the memorial some other time to pay your respects and send a message of no confidence to Jody.

Mass hirings DID start in 1986. The academy was in full capacity and they were putting recruits through like a bad case of diarrhea. Background investigations were not very thorough and there were more than a few bad apples that were hired, then fired, or indicted and went to jail. I think "Pacman" and his crew were part of the 86 mass hirings.

Speaking as someone with a matter of days left on the job, If I was changing my staff, I wouldn't have even let them walk back to their desks without one of MY people supervising their every move. Dirty tricks have occured in the past by departing personnel. The Chicago Board of Trade has had off-duty CPD for years, that are summoned before an employee gets the axe. They accompany him to retrieve personal property, give him/her final pay, court order to stay ???? feet from bldg, escort to transportation be it car, train, etc all the way to there means of transport away from downtown. Then they are assigned to that office til the the office manager feels comfortable. Some offices have permanent CPDs.

Please consider the same and visit the memorial some other time to pay your respects and send a message of no confidence to Jody.

By all means visit the memorial, however do not give anymore money to the memorial fund, this fund as been a cash cow for Phil Cline and company. He refuses to account for millions of dollars. Cline's people have been on the phone soliciting funds only to pay himself and others big bucks. All this is being done on the backs of dead police officers. This fund need to be investigated. Shame on you Phil Cline.

"DISAPPOINTED IN THE MANNER demotions are being handled" What police agency are you from? J-Fed is letting people go the same way all incoming Supts. let people go. Quick and painless. He doesn't need to give a reason. That's the way the game is played. Jimmy Carroll has always ass-kissed the big shots so it's no surprise he glad handed everyone on the way out. That line about being sure every one of them had a relationship with someone who's star was in the honored Star Case was cheap shot. Sympathy anyone?
