St. Baldricks Event

We don't know why this is just coming to our attention. It would seem that an event like this really ought to generate a bit more interest. From the comments:
  • SCC, I have a favor. I know how many coppers read this blog, me being one of probably thousands. This coming Friday march 14th at the Chicago Police Academy, they will be shaving heads as part of the st baldricks day event. All donated money for this event goes to research for childhood cancer. God forbid any of us have a child that gets cancer, or has cancer currently, i know it must mean a lot to these families to know so many people are raising money on their behalf. Last year according to their website, 18,000 people across the USA shaved their heads collecting 12.8 million dollars for this cancer research. I have registered for the event at www.stbaldricks.org and they will have many professional barbers and hair people at the academy on Friday shaving heads from 0600 until 1700 giving ALL of us an opportunity to get there. this is the first year I have signed up but i hope to do this every year in the future. Too many people are worried about shaving their head for any amount of time but these poor kids lose their hair while battling a life threatening illness and have to be so strong to get through it, I believe its the least we can do. The fire department raised $84,000 for their event last week and so far the CPD has raised $34,000. Lots of us talk shit about firemen on here, some jokingly some not so much, but lets use this as an opportunity to beat them for a great cause. Hey lets not forget, our hair can grow back and many of these children may not be so fortunate. Its a small sacrifice for a GREAT cause. We have been looked on negatively in the press in many ways but we all know that when it comes to children and elderly we always have a soft spot in our hearts. At least go to the website and see what its all about. We post for signatures for Mette, which was great and I signed, but this too is a cause that we should push for a few days and see how much we can in fact raise. Lots of negatives are posted here, lets see if we can go a few days and raise some money for these kids. I am donating $150.00, some my own and some from a few sponsors. I got started late but if even if 2000 more coppers sign up and can give $100 each, that's 200k raised for something I hope and pray not 1 of us ever has to go through! And lets challenge the new superintendent to do the same along with his command staff. If you want good press, now is the time to get it!

If you are by Area 2 on Friday, March 14th the 5th District will be having a Saint Baldrick's Day shave off, BBQ, and celebration for everyone involved in this worthy cause starting at 1600 hours.

Stop by and show support for these kids who have cancer and who have to deal with so much. These kids never complain and they always have a huge smile on their face when they get visitors, or see police officers.

Lend a hand, give a few bucks, whatever - just do something. You just might feel better about yourself.

Again, you are all welcome to stop by and support the event. Bring your kids too - it will be a great day!!

SCC, et al…

I did try to bring this to your attention back in January and it was buried in a comment thread for some reason. Oddly enough when I made that initial post, it was posted immediately rather than pending review, which is probably how it didn’t get a little more attention back then, although several people contacted me based on that post and many more saw the posters that were sent to every district and unit and have heard about it from those who did sign up and are seeking pledges.

As the person responsible for organizing I should have been more persistent with this site, however I was also concerned with the fact that since this is the first year CPD is getting involved I didn’t want it to get so large that any success was overshadowed by it being so large that it was not controllable and people wouldn’t get involved ever again. I also didn’t get the official department approval until after the first of the year, but next year will be much larger and planning and announcements will begin earlier.

There are currently 134 people signed up to be shavees, a dozen or so volunteers, and eight barbers for the main event at the Academy and for that I am extremely grateful. Next year these numbers will grow incredibly.

Knowing that the word is going to spread like crazy as the brave men and women who did sign up this year return to work bald, or sans their long hair, the people working with me on organizing this and I have already determined that we will be back next year and that we will actually set it up to have locations in each area to make it easier on participants. That of course means we will need more volunteers and barbers so mark your calendars now for how you can help out starting around November or December for planning and letting your hair grow.

All that being said, thank you in advance to all who have been or are going to be participants either as shavees, volunteers, barbers, or contributors. This truly is a wonderful cause and I hope the successes of this year grow and continue for years to come.

Until we find a cure,

Here's an event that public officials (police officers) will be involved in for a true act of compassion for those who may or have become ill with cancer. (DON'T EXPECT THE MEDIA TO BE THERE TO SHOW THE PUBLIC OUR SOFTER AND HUMAN SIDE).

To any of my fellow officers who ever have said "God made policement so firemen can hereos too" please put your money were your mouth is.

You can donate online, it is SAFE, and it is easy to do. I just did it this morning. Type it Chicago Police Department in the search and you will see teams from 5, from 9, and other areas.

Great cause and I know if we all could just give $10 an Officer we would beat the CFD.

Did anyone else catch the news that Cook County is throwing out the drug charges against the Cicero police commander that tru arrested if he completes drug school?

I am SURE Cicero PD will then conduct a fair investigation and he will be demoted and/or fired (wink wink).

If he would have been CPD, he'd have been fired and charged with some sort of felony.

What a joke.

this truly would be a great event for the department to be more involved in. it was kept very quiet and unfortunately we are being made aware of it very late. That being said, there is still time to doante whatever it is you can afford. SCC, great job providing the link, making it real easy and giving us no room for excuses. But it would be great to see shaved heads in every roll call throughout the city this weekend. I know coppers have a soft side and this would be a great way to show it in large numbers citywide!!!!!!!!! Be even better to see JFED and the rest of his bosses sitting and having their heads shaved, lets see what kind of men you REALLY are, step up to the plate boys!!!! Its a GREAT cause

While CHA officials say the agency does not intend to impose such limits right away, they would not rule out implementing them in the future.

We kind of got a late start due to certain things beyond our control. But we are going to pull this off one way or the other. As you can see by the above post there is an event happening at Area 2 and the Main event will be at the Academy. The Pipes and Drums will be there around noon. As well as some possible news coverage. Also, you can still sign up to have your head shaved right there at the event. So if you think it is too late, it most definitely is not. Feel free to stop by either or both events. Make a donation, lose some hair and do something very meaningful for some kids that have it a lot worse off than most of us.

Instead they are working under people who have no street smarts, do not know how to deal with people, do not show respect to them, and have no idea how to police. Veterans have policed all over this world and have had "A" class training, yet they are told what to do by people with clout and a 2 yr college degree, and "some of them (meaning bosses)have spent limited or no time on the streets of Chicago, so they have no idea of how to be a working police officer."

About time you cops got on board. The CFD has you guys beat for several years in a row.

Patrick Elwood is going to be at Brother Rice high school tomorrow. If you went to Rice and want to donate-click www.StBaldricks.org, find the Brother Rice event or pick a Rice student and donate under their name online. The Crusaders are trying to beat out all the other schools for the second year.

If you went to Mt. Carmel or St. Rita we don't need any commentary, ok? (s). After all, this is a good cause and a family event. Thanks in advance.

I am the one that made the comment. The reason being; not knowing CPD had any affiliation with this organization and having lost a family member to childhood cancer, I made a large donation to CFD's team and also solicited other donations on their behalf. I would have rather done it for the home team. Sorry to have offended those who are doing all the hard work. It all goes to the same place anyway I suppose.

SCC –

I am hoping that you will allow me the space to extend some thanks to ALL who helped make our Saint Baldrick’s Day Shave Off held today in the 5th District a success.

We had eleven valiant officers who shaved their heads, one mascot (my three year old son) and the two sons of our beautician, Mary Kay, who also stepped up to the plate and shaved their heads too. We had some walk ups who came a little too late to be shaved, and for that I apologize, but they still stayed and had some fun. We will be sure to go longer for next year’s event that is for certain. Overall, it was a great event filled with laughter, fun, children playing and the camaraderie that you would expect at a police function - with a hell of a lot of ball busting as one might expect as well.

I do not know how the thread changed from the purpose of Saint Baldrick’s Day to the immature comments about hair styles, braids or mullets, but all I saw at our event was Chicago Police Officers, COPS, all having a good time. Maybe it is because we work in 5, maybe we do not know any better, but we ALL helped out, and we ALL had a good time. We helped to raise over $5,000.00 dollars for what everyone involved in thought was a very worthy cause. Again, I do not understand the comments about not liking the Saint Baldrick’s organization, but I am sorry somebody was/is unhappy with them. I believe that the money we raised will someday help find a cure for cancer, but then again, I am an optimist. I already lost my mom, a brother and a sister to the disease so there is really nothing negative that I would say about any organization trying to help stop cancer, and especially children with cancer.

I know there were some bumps along the way after reading the various posts and I am sure these things will work themselves out by next year. While I have never met him in person I would like to also thank SGT Bill O’Reily, the CPD point man for the Saint Baldrick’s event. SGT O’Reily helped me out a ton with some questions I had, and I know he is motivated to have an even better event next year. In fact, I will be back next year – God willing – to help organize the event for all of Area 2. We would like to get more officers to shave their heads, more bosses, and maybe even the Superintendent too. I have a bet with some people that if he does shave his head he will look like the banjo playing kid from Deliverance. I do not know what the final totals are as of yet but I am sure that ALL the CPD did a tremendous job.

For all that contributed, I say THANK YOU!

When you find out, if you could post them, it would be nice to have a benchmark to beat for next year. And you're welcome.

Hey 01:43

While I will concede we did not beat the CFD overall total, although there are still checks and cash to be added in, take a look at the per-person total and I think CFD will be shaking in their boots for next year.

There were also several blue shirts who signed up at events outside of the CPD event before we started organizing, so if we had them in the mix, the outcome may have been different.

Enjoy your victory this year, and consider yourself notified,

FYI on the HS totals for south side. Rice $36,000 raised, Rita $15,000 raised, Mt Carmel $5,000 raised! Again the crusaders show who truly is the top south side HS. Oh and CFD 88k CPD 55k. A great job in the last week by coppers but still way short of where we should be. Hopefully next year a few more open their wallets and donate!

Thanks. Fox had a pediatric oncologist with one of her patients at Rice. She said she was nervous but did a pretty good job at explaining where the money goes and what their goals are. She shaved her head too. Man, now that's a calling. Must be heartbreaking for her sometimes.

To Bill Murphy, I don't know you but I will give my $$ and time to CPD next year. I am already working on trying to get some surprise shavers lined up. Kudos to you!

As of this writing CPD is at just about $68,000.00, about $20,000.00 behind CFD but they had almost 400 shavees to our 160 so person to person, we smoked them! The web site doesn't show the cash and checks that were collected that day, those have to be entered after being double checked by the St. Baldrick's people.

It's not too late to overtake the CFD, if anyone wishes to still donate this year, go to the website http://www.stbaldricks.org/events/event_info.html?EventKey=2008|898 and if you want to give to someone in particular click on event participants to find them. Or give it to one of the suddenly bald people you see at work and they'll get it entered for you! Check out the site for some great photos from the Academy event as well, and we’ll try to update with new pictures every couple of days.

Next year we will start seeking volunteers in the late fall and will be even more organized, so start thinking about letting your hair grow come November or December.

I can’t say thank you enough to everyone who helped out this year, the volunteers, barbers, and shavees were all spectacular.

We did get some positive press coverage for our event. The Friday before St. Patrick’s Day is always the busiest for St. Baldrick’s so news crews were all over the city but Channel 2 did a great piece to talk about Baby Reece and Channel 9 did a piece as well which gave us some great national exposure. I didn’t get to watch CLTV but they had sent a crew as well, and there were some newspaper photographers, but I haven’t looked through those yet. The Beverly Review is probably going to have an article as well this week for any of you that get that paper.

Thanks again to all and as only a Cub fan can say, “Wait ‘til Next Year!”
