Shots Fired
No one hit, cops ok, gun recovered and once again, no comments by IPRA or Monique:
- Chicago police officers fired shots at a 15-year-old boy who allegedly started to point a gun at them during a chase Wednesday morning on the West Side, but no one was hit, police said.
The incident occurred about 10 a.m. near 23rd Street and Millard Avenue, police said. The teen was suspected of selling drugs and was running from officers when he raised the gun toward them and they opened fire, police said.
The boy was not hit and did not fire back. He was arrested on the scene, and his gun was recovered. Charges were pending.
We had our doubts that putting the gag on the Orange One or Monique was going to pay dividends, but we'll admit to being wrong in a big way. This not releasing any info to the media is a huge plus for police shootings because anyone the media actually finds to comment seems like a freaking insane alien with no counterpoint from the Department, so nothing gets aired. It's a nice break from Camden's canned speech, which Monique couldn't deliver even if Camden used her as a ventriloquist dummy.

SCC, for your sake, I hope you are never involved in a shooting. I know you are the smartest copper out there, but if, God forbid it happens, you'll be glad to see a friendly face covering your ass with a "canned speech."
Think about Mr./Mrs./your life partner when it becomes apparent from the news that you may be involved in a shooting and the comfort an official statement, other than "It is currently under investigation" brings. Having been on the scene for a number of police involved shootings, I can affirm how many coppers look for that sense of comfort that they did their job. And a public statement from Camden, or even Bond, offers that sense of relief. Even the most seasoned coppers begin to second guess themselves after a shooting and they need he affirmation of having followed procedure and doing what had to be done.
The IPRA, or whatever cute moniker they are using, will continue to issue benign statements about investigation. Until it's a heater and a Right Reverend is shot, or a Rev's son is shot; then the mealy mouthed, "It's under investigation" will seem like the Department--and rightly so--is hanging the copper out to dry. And then, if you think anyone will look like an assclown, it won't be the "insane" people the news is interviewing, but those who are saying "No comment".
In typical Stuttering Prick fashion, this will work until there is a difficult shooting, i.e. no weapon immediately recovered, or toy gun waved around, and a hue and cry develops. Rozenzwick (SP?) will look like so many does in the forest when Rev. Jakes is screaming "POLICE MURDER" at her and the best she can offer is "the matter is under investigation".
I hope you feel the same sense of comfort in "NO COMMENT" if it's you at that point. Maybe then Daley's son/nephew/garbage man's kid who is acting as Dept. spokesperson will forget the canned "the officer was in fear for his/her safety" and let the assembled media know that "the officer involved is currently being fitted for a prison uniform, as we think he murdered this young gang, I mean honor student."
Ain't gonna give up our nines to nobody. Our brothers gots to start usin' machetes, chainsaws, cinder blocks, baseball bats, tire irons, nooses, our fists and feet to T-C-B. We need more diversity in our murder weapons.

Gee, thanks for the kind thoughts, but the "canned speech" wasn't working. All it did was feed the reverend's and citizen's fire because they could march out there and call the police liars and murderers and racists and all sorts of garbage.
Zero info means Zero points to rebut and zero coverage for the rev's and the fine citizens protesting altar boys being shot.
And if you're looking for comfort from Pat or Monique, you're looking in the wrong spot. You ought to be looking to your partner, your co-workers, the Detectives, your Sgt, Lt, W/C and the ADS. Those are the people who are going to at the Round Table making sure that what you say is what justified your actions at the time.

we should have "coho lips" tell the media what is really going to happen to the mutt who commited the crime. NOTHING. a few months from now he will get super secret probation and be right back out to do some more slinging. he will go to the funhouse on 1100 s hamilton for a few months and magically be rahabilitated. a fifteen year old working a jab holding a rocket-- no big deal-- happens everyday here.
sorry, scc, but zero info from the familiar face means the media will go to regular cops to get the story, and if cops on the street are afraid to talk, then who is left? that's right, whoever is there and whoever says something.
did you notice the story you copied and pasted [i believe it was the trib's] had no attribution whatsoever? that means they didn't get those details from the bondage or ipra.
and as far as the familiar face giving ammunition to the revs. and nuts on the street, i hope you understand that the dreaded media just wants Something -- a quote, a fact, anything -- and when camden was out there, whether it was 2 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning, he satisfied that need and everyone went away relatively happy [especially if the neighborhood wasn't so nice and they just wanted to get the hell out of there and back downtown].
Your department has been lucky so far that the kids involved in these recent police-involved shootings were nobodies -- but wait until some kid who is the nephew or second or third cousin of some storefront rev. or treasurer of the block club gets involved in one of these incidents, and all your 'media relations' people say is 'there was a shot fired...at this location...there was also an injured 15 year old...police were there" etc., man, you'll go nuts with all the people claiming the police did the wrong thing and their boy was turning his life around, etc.
See, SCC, the media really don't hate the police. They just want to fill space and time. And the people you never deal with blow these things up so that [in their minds] people will buy that day's paper or watch that night's newscast. You might think sometimes they are piling on when a cop is involved in something negative, but that's not cop hate driving them, it's just the mindless gangbang mentality of the media (you think the media hates drew peterson, for instance? hell, they LOVE him -- but that doesn't mean they won't make him mud and treat him like a circus monkey) There are other things involved, too -- a lot of the TV people here are only here for a couple years until they move on to the next market, and they have no investment in the community; the newspaper people, there's a few vets, but many , depending on who they work for, are either fresh out of school or have only lived in this area for a few years, and almost all under 40 have never spent time just hanging out at a police station, have never bothered to talk to cops unless there was information an editor told them they needed.
Don't get me wrong -- there are a-holes in the media (you can tell, some of them post here and pretend to be cops, saying 'really, tell me more about that thing' ) some don't like the police, some try to defend the cops, most are just cynical and assume the worst no matter who the subject of a story is. But people can turn around sometimes (witness the possible transformation of mary mitchell), but their opinion of the police force isn't helped by your bosses stopping the official flow of information.
Why wasn't the city notified about a CPS student armed with a gun? How about the news reporting the number of students caught with guns?

I appreciate the fact that coppers need some public support from the department, but they aren't going to get it and even if they did it wouldn't mean much.
This job is not about doing the right thing anymore. It's no longer about courage and honor and service.
It's about getting sued.
That includes police shootings, arrests, domestics, and just about every other thing a policeman does.
If the department's silence somehow squashes a media frenzy of false allegations and bogus witness statements, then we should be all for it.
The public doesn't support us anymore and they won't until they feel that the next time they go to work some thug is going to stick a gun in their face and tell them to hand it over. Then, this criminal-is-a-victim-media-drama will come to an end and a dead gangbanger with a copper's bullet in his head will be considered a blessing for society.
Until that day comes, let the department keep its mouth shut.
So when the kid w/the gun says " I didnt understand that pointing a gun at the Police was dangerous or ilegal." Will Jr get found not guilty?
While I always respected the Orange One, his canned speech had the effect of making people think he was lying. A simple "we do not comment on ongoing investigations" is always better than giving details and trying to justify police actions at a time when tempers are up and the public is just looking for a reason to throw the officer to the wolves.
As far as the media going to the cop on the street for comments....The cop on the street is not permitted to make a comment !!
After reading the 14 posted comments all I can say is glad CPDis o.k.--Screw the kid, keep the officers safe--thank God they are with all the little a-holes ouit there.

If you say to junior something on the order of "Stop in the name of the law, I command peace and I order you to drop your weapon immediately or I will be forced to escalate my level of force used to effect this arrest" junior can truthfully say he had no idea what you were talking about.
However, if you say "drop your shit mother fucker or I'll cap your ass" why then you might be speaking junior's language.
Of course my use of the vernacular might be slightly dated, what with me being a fucking graybeard home boy and all.

This is so true. How far as a nation have we fallen? I think we have hit the bottom, or are very near it. I hope so, because when you're at the bottom there's only one to go, and that's up. God was with this young fool when the bullets were unleashed. When all this is sorted out in the courts, one wuld hope that someone would point out to this wayward youth that this incident was definitely his "wake up" call.
