Fired for Sit Ups?

From the comments sections:
  • Probably in the fall. Hiring freeze on. Make sure you have the correct fat percentage. learn to do sit ups in perfect format. otherwise they fire recruits for missing one sit up. Fingers must be interlocked. Very important to be a police officer with correct sit ups and form. Firing recruits for anything. 3 fired this week.
We know PPO's are "at-will" employees with no protections. We also know that with the new regime, physical fitness is being emphasized much more so than in years past. Is this a firing after repeated attempts to pass the physical requirements? Or a knee jerk reaction to attempt to correct a minor problem with a hammer?

That whole academy is a / has been a joke for years. its about time they held the recruits to the same standards as every other law enforcement agency in the state. if you can't do the minimum standards coming on, you dont deserve the job period.
its a step towards professionalism and its about time. its not fair to the rest of the people that put in the work to just pass the few degenerates.

What's up with this? This is on the front page of the Chicago Sun Times metro section (website) and it links you to the CPD Clearpath system:

Personally,
I think they should have a link to SCC for real news.

They are given 3 chances to pass. If he was fired, he failed 3 times. There is some dispute to the fingers. Chicago says you have to have your fingers interlocked. State standard states hands behind head. Kid you are talking about did them all but one wasn't counted because his fingers came apart. Same with female recruit last week. I imagine that more will be fired for their body fat before too long.
It would be different if someone couldn't come close to the standard, but ONE SIT UP. Really dumb.

Makes one wonder if a part of the mayor's real agenda, besides the financial enrichment elements, is that he's 100% in favor of the 'thinning the herd' phenomenon.

Maybe that's the way that he's 'all about the children'.

I waited 17 months from the first test to getting hired......that is plenty of time to get into physical shape to pass a simple power test. I do not feel sorry for this person. This type of exercise requires no special equipment. The gym instruction is a joke and there is not enough time alloted for PT. The new gym is very helpful compared to the lousy gym they had before. Holy s[h]it me Batman!!!

Mayor Daley and his fifty thieves. Daley likes to control the police Academy and Tobias like Shavers before him are his gate keepers, so to speak.

The sit ups situation is for real. It's strange so many military personnel, in great shape, fail to do the Chicago sit up vs. military trained sit ups. The idiots at the Academy must think they got some special sit up routine that they use to prevent someone from getting in or are they trying to racially balance every classroom and the Department?

Yet, another dirty little secret exposed in the Department.

A class action lawsuit is just waiting to happen. Just the applicants don't even know they are getting fucked with. Again, easy to prove. Just look at the records and do the math.

The answer to why Tobias was not demoted or suspended and continues to maintain his exempt position; not taking any responsibility for the Special Operations Section corruption scandals for which he commanded as an ADS; he signed off on all those C.R.'s, never questioned his commanders or supervisors regarding the pattern of complaints or requesting a confidential investigation into
these suspicious actions of these rogue officers?

If Tobias leaves you can be sure Daley will appoint another. J-fed will not make this choice.

EVERY police officer has a story like yours- thats the problem. it starts at the academy and with who we hire... they should make it harder, and fire more people. Other places don't pass you unless you pass 100%.( not just get close...)and guess what the FTO program is legit too people fail that as well. just cause you pass the academy does not qualify you to be a street officer...

Get rid of the education requirement. It is the most stupid entry requirement ever.

The department is failing to avail itself of hard working-able bodied young men and women who for some reason (perhaps economic) did not or could not go to college.

The new minimum requirements should be the ability to write and read English and be physically fit for the activity encountered by a police officer.

A fuckin' degree could be earned later if they aspire to be promoted.

With that said, they should get rid of the recruits who can't cut it....it is the very minimum standard and we all know that some recruits pride themselves on doing the very minimum.

I do think that once a they become PPO's they shouldn't be dumped the second they mess up, everybody has messed up at one time...(short of breaking the law of course).

If that is who I think it is, she is working afternoons at Pottawattamie Park in 024. (just in case there are any civilians reading this and they want to go visit her)

Don't think the English has improved at all. Probably should be cleaning hotel rooms....

But, we all know how she passed the academy: She is somebody's somebody. Maybe J-Fed could look into that...yeah, right.

If a recruit did the required number of sit-ups and was fired because his/her fingers slipped apart during one sit-up, obviously had no clout. Or someone in the academy is goofy--both equally likely.

While recruits are "at-will" employees, they still do have some rights under Federal, State and case labor law. Like there has to be some reasonableness.

Well to be completely fair, have you guys SEEN what's getting churned out by the academy? In the last few weeks i have run into a few ppo's that not only are completely clueless but there is no way they are qualified to be a p.o. You have a "spanish rapper" in 018 who thinks that he is going to "make it" and be discovered because he works there. A ppo from 010 that i ran into recently who was off duty and acted more ghetto than the hood rats walking around and another from 017 who is just plain old stoooopid! I think if they got rid of the 60 hrs and instead of hiring frustrated college students who onl take this job because burger king won't hire them they should look more towards the military vets who have a sense of nobility and honor. We were trained properly and (for the most part) know how to conduct ourselves properly and behave like adults. This department took a downturn 6 - 7 years ago with who they deemed worthy to do this job and it has been downhill from there. The department has become a bunch of whiney little children who feel that they are owed somethin and WALK INTO A WATCH COMMANDERS OFFICE DEMANDING THINGS! To this day i would never do that and i have more than payed my dues. The reason for this is respect for the chain of command, whether they deserve it or not, and the oaath i took over a decade ago to conduct myself as a professional.
The city and department are doomed unless they wise up because eventually all the good po's will either retire or leave and they will be left with these boy/men who care more about their hair than the citizens they swore to protect. I love this city but it is doomed.

And what will JFed and the midget do regarding disparate impact?

Thomas v. City of Evanston (1985)
In this case, a class suit was brought by several women under Title VII who were unable to pass the physical agility test required of police applicants in Evanston, Illinois. The police department claimed that the test was devised "from a `job analysis' of the work done by police officers in various Illinois cities" (Hale & Menniti, 1993, p. 181). Few women were able to pass it, however, and the court concluded that "`too often tests which on the surface appear objective and scientific turn out to be based on ingrained stereotypes and speculative assumptions about what is `necessary' to do the job'" (Hale & Menniti, 1993, p. 182).

These "recruits" took their intial test over two years ago. We all know the hiring process doesn't move that quickly. If they really wanted to be the police, don't you think they could have prepared? I believe you get tthree attempts at the POWER test, if I had failed even one part, I would have busted my ass to make sure I passed, without a doubt. This should be a reminder that today's recruits don't come on to be the police, they come on for the intangables (SIC) (ie. tuition re-inbursement and such). Think back to when you were a recruit, weren't you a little embarassed for your classmates that remained in sweats, while everyone else maintained the status quo? It's is obvious that these "kids" hearts were not in it.

How about being fired for failing to list all police jobs you applied for prior to Chicago? My son, with 10 years prior police experience on the street, inadvertantly left off 2 after he ran out of room on the employment app for Chicago. Completes the Academy has an ex girlfriend put in a bogus complaint, which he was cleared but IAD comes up with lying on the Employment application. Strip him of police powers and say he's a liability to the City. Guess they forgot about the burning building he ran into to evacuate or the Tech 9 he took off the street, wasn't a liability then. City waits 45 days and then fires him. Heres whats heart breaking for my family. His brother gave his life in the line of duty for Chicago. All those high ranking officers who said if theres anything I can do, call me. Or the Aldermen who said call me, well I did, no one helped and most never returned my calls. Now I have one son who died for the City and the other the City discraced. Thank You Chicago PD. Although there are state requirements to be hired, specifically the power test, there are no state requirements for physical standards for certification. There are state standards for academics and range, and these must be passed in order to be certified. The Training Division has had physical requirements for a long time, but you will almost never see anyone fired for not completing them because they have been arbitratily set by the gym personnel. The city has never been able to defend them successfully. That is why you have seen people not complete the run or fail to get over the wall, or miss some of the rest, and still wind up being certified. All those threats that many of you remember were really empty. None of that stuff was ever validated. I spite of what they would have had you believe, a lot of the physical training was pretty much bogus. Anything required by the state is easily defensible. Unless things have changed drastically, I suspect that anyone fired in this latest apparent fiasco will also eventually get legal advice and be rehired.

...............

SCC, don't post this just so you know who the above is talking about it is Bob Gordon, Brother of Micheal Gordon who died in the line of duty. Bob had some problems with the the mother of his child. She even told him BEFORE he was hired on Chicago that she was going to screw him. Bob had worked for Cicero Pd and Broadview PD prior to Chicago and left both on good terms. He let his investigator know about the problem during the hiring process and was told not to worry about it. He made it through the Academy and onto the street. During this time his ex made many complaints about him including saying he was dirty at his last PDs. These were investigated and all found to be false. So what did the Dept Do? They went over his initial App to Chicago PD and found he did not put down 2 places that he had tested prior to Chicago. Keep in mind Bob is in his 30s and took many different PDS exams over the years. They then said he falsified his App and now he is fired. As the above poster, who I assume is a parent said, when Mike Died everybody said if you need us call. Well Bob made some calls and he was turned away. On second thought go ahead and post this. Everyone should know this story. This job is getting worse. Even if you are right the Dept will not back you up but find a reason to fire you.

I was a sgt in academy years ago and retired. A former marine, I understand the necessity of fitness and discipline. CPD should drop college requirement. Return to military veterans and blue collar workers. Emphasis must be physical fitness, discipline, look good, and ability to fire a weapon. Townsend use to say; give them a gun, stick and star. Ability to think and reason can be learned later. We had a tough, disciplined academy under a former military person and HRI's were all military. Most had relationships with female recruits. Shavers was pure clout and allowed ethics to slide down the drain. Tobias actually has remained ethical depsite his past reputation. Today, they have decent LTS and sgts but the staff remains questionable. For every worker there is a clout instructor. They cannot acquire working PO's so now the focus is on physical fitness not classroom. Academy removing Harold Washington role players, which I worked for years. No role players, no scenarios. What is left? Physical fitness, discipline, firearms. Now if they hire recruits?

Just heard from a reliable source that the kid who failed the sit up portion of the POWER test did anywhere from 45-50 sit-ups durring his time (I think its still 1 min). The kid was on 36 the whole time and the Gym instructor would not count the rest because of fingers not being completley locked behind the head (yes, completley locked, not interlocked at tips of fingers like he was doing).

What make you a policeman?

It isn't being a muscle heade goof.

It isn't being a computer geek with a thumb drive hanging around your neck.

It isn't kissing your clouts ass.

It isn't having a job with an ID hanging around your neck at 35th St.

It isn't sandbaging some poor sap so you can be a tac man.

Being a real policeman is doing the right thing, using common sense and not having your head in your ass.

Obviously these kids did the sit ups to get into the academy a few week prior to the start date. You think the counters were really watching the fingers of everyone during all those power tests during the screening? Now all of a sudden they have to be perfect? The academy does a great job messing up your body from the first day of welcome to the gym. Heck, from the first day of verbal judo and gym: no warm up, no cool down. Then it takes the body 2 weeks to recover. The body fat? I saw guys that passed the power test with flying colors that had to worry about body fat. Passes the physical requirements, but is too fat according to the "standards"? Heck, as long as he could save my life if needed, he could be whatever size.

the issue isnt that the recruits didnt do the situps, they did the amount they were supposed to, but the instructor didnt count a few cause of the finger thing. i heard it was the case for both. the gym instructors dont seem to give a shit either, they act like you can go to them, but when you do, they act like you are bothering them

Finally we have some standards. Hey SCC what do you think mimimum standards mean? Are they simply recommendations? Should we pass them if they fail a written test by just 1 question? If that is the answer then why test.

Go get an abdominizor!

Get rid of the education requirement. It is the most stupid entry requirement ever.

The new minimum requirements should be the ability to write and read English and be physically fit for the activity encountered by a police officer.

A fuckin' degree could be earned later if they aspire to be promoted.

6/20/2008 12:28:00 PM

Thank God people like you are not in charge. The standards in this department should be raised, not lowered. People who won't pursue a degree always have some kind of chip on their shoulder for those who worked hard to get one. Explain yourself if you can, because if you think people who have degrees are the source of the troubles in CPD, then a toolbox like you is part of the problem, not the solution.

This about failing recruits that DID IN FACT DO THE REQUIRED situps but an instructor who sat quite a distance away says that their fingers were not interlocked the entire time.
This is about giving a sit up exam wherein there is a control tactics class being held and the testee cannot hear the sit up count.
This is about an instructor who regularlly disqualifies people because their fingers were not completely interlocked at all times during the sit up exam.
This is about an instructor who would take away someone's livelyhood because of one sit up SHE DEEMED was not good enough!
A $43,000 a year job that one instructor can decided you get to stay or your out because of not properly interlocked fingers!
No where does the state training board say the fingers need to be interlocked - only that the hands need to be on the head!
The academy added the interlocked fingers to their recruit manual.
And one - only one instructor deceides if those fingers are interlocked properly. YOUR JOB FUTURE LYES IN HER HANDS!

As for R. Gordon -
A 36 yr old PPO who probably had 20jobs before getting hired by CPD.

A man whose brother gave his life for the City of Shitcago.

A man who gets fired because he did not list all the jobs he APPLIED FOR (NOT WORKED), APPLIED FOR = gets fired by the CPD for lying on his CPD job application!

The Mayor of this city and all its administrators should be ashamed and rot in hell.

I hope that all of these people never have any relatives or children that make honest mistakes in their lives.

We should all get behind this!

Officials support Carrasquillo's efforts By Charles ThomasCHICAGO (WLS) -- A man who killed a patrolman in 1976 has applied for parole, pitting officers against officials in his quest for freedom.
Ronnie Carrasquillo was sentenced to between 200 and 600 years in prison for killing Patrolman Terrence Loftus in 1976. Loftus was trying to break up a gang fight on the city's North Side when he was shot to death.
"To release him would send a terrible message to Chicago police officers and their families that the sacrifice that Officer Loftus made in that October day in 1976 has been forgotten," said Philip Cline, former CPD superintendent.
In past parole attempts, Carrasquillo said he did not know Loftus was a policeman and said he fired his gun in the air. To counter the claim, the State's Attorney resurrected a yellowed pile of evidence from 30 years ago.
Story continues belowAdvertisement"His bullet enters his face here and lodges right here. That's going to be significant. The evidence defies Carrasquillo's statement," said Gina Savini, assistant Cook County State's Attorney.
U.S. Congressman Luis Gutierrez is one of a half dozen elected Latino officials who support Carasquillo's parole effort. In a statement, Gutierrez writes that Carrasquillo "...is ready to make a positive contribution to our community and to mentor our young people to stay away from gangs and violence".
Other elected officials who today confirmed their support for Carrasquillo's bid are State Senator William Delgado and Cook County Commissioner Roberto Maldonado.
However, Chicago police say that Carrasquillo--whose street name was "Mad Dog"--is still the leader of the Logan Square-based Imperial Gangsters.
"'Mad Dog' Carrasquillo is a gang hero who typifies all the evil and hell that gangs bring our community," said John Schmidt, Chicago Police Department.
The Imperial Gangsters remain a scourge in Logan Square. Two of their members were arrested last year after Schanna Gayden, 11, was shot to death at a playground. The young girl is a victim of gang crossfire between the Imperial Gangsters and rivals Spanish Cobras, police said.
"For Ronnie Carrasquillo, who is still a member of the Imperial Gangsters, to get back on the street only 30 years after he shot Officer Loftus in cold blood, would be a terrible, terrible message," said Cline.
Carrasquillo will be interviewed by the Prison Review Board on July 10th before the board renders its final decision.

Just a few days, later, under better conditions, I legitimately passed the run , with time to spare! You guys needs to be reasonable when you blast some PPO for failing to do one sit up! That could have been any of you, any of us, who quit another job and suddenly you're fired for one sit-up? Some of you act like once you are hired, the rest of your life is put on hold, well that's not the case. How many people have to deal with family situations, specifically sick family members, even children and have to try to keep it together to get through everything. I find it amazing that some of you talk out of both sides of your mouth....you want everyone to stick together and back each other up, yet at the same time you think it's great that they fired a ppo for one sit up because that means that they somehow will fail at being a street cop. How absurd and that mindset is exactly what is helping to destroy the morale in this department, along with Daley & J-Fed! By the way, I'm a female and I'm leaner, meaner and after 12 years on the job, can out run most of the lean males who were in the academy with me because most of them can't pull their pants up past the overhang and haven't been able to see their feet in years!

I went through the ISP recruit academy after being hired by suburban dept. back in '88. Up at 0600 for a two mile run. Had to be back in your barracks to shower, change and be at parade rest in front of the cafeteria at 0700. After breakfast, you went back to your barracks to make your bed military style. During your first hour of class, the supervisors, which were P.O.s from different dept.s, did bed inspections and if yours was not made properly, it was torn apart and you had to make it over during your first break. I could go on but after graduating, you had a sense of self pride from the discipline. Then in '91 I was hired by CPD and I couldn't believe how lax the academy was. Oh sure, they gave you the big speech and the yelling and screaming in the gym but nothing was really done to the dogs. And of course there were the recruits who couldn't come close to passing any of the required courses, i.e. power test, range, during the 24 weeks but miraculously passed it on the last day early in the morning. Then years later, when I heard there was not more running outside in inclimate weather and recruits could not be yelled at, I just shook my head. I just think that there is something to be said for a disciplined academy. Not to sound hypocritical, I think the situp thing is a joke. Again, sorry for the rant.

Something that hasn't been discussed here. Gordon's ex seems to be a bit of a problem. Maybe she's made a lot of calls, filed a few beefs. With the climate how it is today with CRs and log#s, the City probably took the prudent path...they had grounds to fire him, get him off the payroll, and keep his ex from having to call IPRA with any more baseless BS that someone would have to go out and investigate. It's happened before with other PPOs. They have asshole exes (some that were the Police before the PPO was hired), cross complaints start flying, and just before the PPO is off probation, the City fires them. Not pretty, not pleasant, but as a manager I can understand why these decisions happen. Who needs 20+ years of nonsense being filed, all because of a bitter breakup?

Holy Never a bad question? Batman!!!

In response to...

"do u think there may be underlying issues with the recruits other than just the one sit up? such as some of the instructors feel these ppo's may be a liability and this is a legit way to get rid of them?"

NO! An instructor's feelings are NOT to be considered. Unless an instructor has personal knowledge supported with creditable documentation. Prepare a to-from indicating specifically why you think someone shouldn't be the police and submit it through the chain of command. No one person should determine the fate of anyone's career. Would you like to leave your fate in the hands of someone who decided you couldn't do the job? They do this shit in China.

The instructors at the Academy should first support any recruit having problems by mentoring them. If the recruit cannot be mentored by one instructor then try another.

More than one FTO should closely observe the performance and behavior of the recruit and report it officially through the chain. One's personal feelings aren't enough and police officers can be wrong.

Holy Standardized Me Batman!!!

Yes, I agree we must have standards! I not talking about standards. I am talking about physically fit military trained personnel who can do and exceed the prescribed set of sit ups but the testing instructor does not demonstrating or ensure the candidate understands exactly how they will be tested.

Military sit ups are done differently. If the testing instructor sees any candidate not performing the sit up properly testing should be stopped and the candidate corrected and then continue testing.

These Academy instructors are placed in positions and the ADS are there to ensure that Da Mayor's policies are fulfilled and we know this mayor is legit.

Mr. Gordon, I had to read your comment twice. After nearly 30 o.t.j. I thought I seen it all.

The exempt' that signned off on this have no soul. The puke bastards will rot in hell. You lost a son to this job and not one person' help's your kid !

This is too sick even for this fucked up city and it's P.D.

"Chicago...the city that fuck's good people"

Be well Mr. Gordon.

Mr. Gordon as a long time CPD officer I also see how bad your son was treated! They are on a witch hunt to hurt any and all officers for any reason! This dept has gone to shit due to gross mismanagement and clouted whores! How about a lawsuit??

There are those in the Department that did stay close to us and to those men and women, most of whom are the street cops, thankyou for all your support.

I graduated the ISP academy last year. We had people failing the sit-ups by 3 or 4, but instead of firing them the academy put in more time with them. I heard CPD gets 3 chances to pass but the tests are a week apart wherre they really don't get a legit chance to improve and settle down. For ISP we would have them do extra work outs every day and them test them a month later. GOOD LUCK to all and STAY SAFE.

And let's not forget the criminal background checks of any new-hires. Certain misdemeanor offenses are allowed and do not affect the hiring. Having someone with a criminal offense on their record is ok, as long as they can pass a fitness test.

We are wasteing tax payers money to fire recriuts over sit- ups. The department says we need more people on the job but lets fire people over stupid sit-ups This is a easy problem to fix don't just fire them.

Shouldn't PO Gordons investigator be fired as well if he/she did not do his backround check correctly?

Wasn't all this supposed to be taken care of before the academy?

Again, Tobias turns his back on his fellow PO's to protect himself.

We put alot of time and money into these recruits and we are just going to fire them over 1 sit up come on. As long as they can shoot, run after the bad guys do paper work and have common sense to do right and wrong

I also graduated from the ISP academy last year and we didn't fire no one for sit up they worked with us so we could pass the requirements. 1 of the ISP officers that kept failing and finally passed is an excellent cop now. sit-ups do not prove anything about being a cop.

WRONG!
There are standards . all you have to do is pass them once, how hard is that? this country is getting to be to soft all around...

6/21/2008 12:41:00 AM

Standards change depending on the exempts. New standard is fat percentage. Recruits hired knowing they cannot pass a new standard that was announced this year. Try video taping the last power test to remove any questions? Have a white shirt monitor the 3rd power test?

CPD isnt worth the time or energy trying to get on the job. You take the test wait 2-3 years then hurry hurry hurry got to take a power test. Pass that then wait some more. Then get your background and piss test. Pass that then wait wait wait some more. Then hurry hurry hurry for your psych eval. Pass that then wait wait wait some more. Then you get your investigator and you wait wait some more. Then you get told when you can start the academy so you get your stuff in order, buy your equipment, quit your job, and get mentally ready for 6 months worth of hoops you have to jump in the academy.
So now all juiced up and excited about starting your new career and you report to the academy on the day you were told you were gonna start. They tell you sorry but you cant start the academy today come back in about 2-3 months when we have the money to train you. To bad so sad.
So to the Chicago Police Department not the officers doing the job: Go F%CK yourself. You are starving for officers but your hiring process is archaic and wastes peoples time. You cannot screw with peoples lives like that and expect them to just take it. I hope the homicide rate goes through the roof and chicago ends up in riots. Chicago sucks anyways and at least now I dont have to work for that jag mayor or tool weis.
I just got hired as a federal leo in less than 7 months with better pay and benefits. Good luck dealing with that crazy backwards city officers. Be safe and take care. And remember be nice to the sh*thead gangbangers and reverends so you dont get jammed up...

Listen all you fitness gurus. Yes, you should be in shape, but hear this. How about this in the academy! Have a brain and learn how to write a proper case report. I cringe 75% of the time I receive one of your G.O.C.R. Spelling, punctuation, capitalization, etc.etc.etc. If there is a box above the narrative and you filled it out, you do not have to repeat it in the narrative. One more thing! If someone gives you a license plate number and you run the plate to see who it is. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT PERSON IS THE OFFENDER!!! What I am getting at is to kill the offender on paper. You're gonna do it many more times then with your muscles.

6/21/2008 11:43:00 AM

Case reports, reading and writing has low priority. Physical fitness and body fat percentage has priority. Quality of recruits will drop over time but they will be in shape.

The people with the chip on their shoulders are the ones with the degree. All you hear about it their degree. Who cares. Of course you will say I am only posting this because I have no degree. Well I am not even an officer and I can tell a mile away which officers have a degree. Just talk to anyone more than once and they will tell you ALL ABOUT their degree. Is that what defines a person? A degree? Don't get me wrong but is that how shallow you are that one of the most important traits you see in a person is whether or not someone has a degree or not? How sad, how sad that other things like loyalty,a good heart and respect do not come before one of your preset standards of what makes a good person. I guarantee you have very few friends and that you are a great officer, all one has to do is ask YOU and you will be the first to tell us how great you are. Sad that the most important part of you is a degree and not family,a loving spouse, peace, happiness. How lonely it must be in your world. Go get a masters - in LIFE. When a gang banger points a gun in your face I hope you can block the bullet with that diploma , if not use your ego that will certainly work.

Only a small percentage of the facts were given on this story....the young man who failed the sit-ups WAS given 3 chances....BY THREE DIFFERENT INSTRUCTORS. Each of the instructors had different requirements!!!! Locked fingers behind head are the only ones counted, locked fingers behind head not counted, stupid shit... Sure doesn't seem fair to me. This young man DID train, Mr. Geek, and did prepare for this power test, as you suggested he may not have! The previous post is correct, he performed numerous sit-ups MORE than were required, only to find out upon completion that the instructor didn't count several of them..... Apparently you are reading it wrong. The author in no fashion is besmirching the loss of his son Michael.
Mr.Gordon's post was in regards to his son that was recently fired. Mike Mette& Bill Coozi are two Officers that come to mind who were egregiously maligned.
He was silent in these two incidents & it appears that the outrage over being maligned by the Dept.was only brought to light when it struck home.
This could be interpreted as being disingenuous?
The Double Standard is always a dangerous path to travel...

This is the most pettiest thing I have ever heard of. One sit up is definetly going to make the difference in catching criminals. Mayor Daley and Jody Weiss you should be so proud of your city! Crime rate is soaring and there are not enough police officers to respond to calls. People are being shot and killed daily, robbed, raped and so on. But yeah absolutely that one sit up makes a world of difference in catching criminals. Every day the crime rate increases. You can not turn on the tv with out having a top story on crime. Chicago used to be a city where I felt safe. Now I am scared shitless to be in public because you never know when your going to be caught in the middle of cross fire. There are much bigger things that need to be focused on here than sit ups. Sad to say but I am embarrased to say I am from Chicago! Get your act together and make our streets safer!!!!!!

Bravo , you are doing what you get paid for. Let me guess you brag about a degree too if you have one. People who say people who don't have a degree have a chip on their shoulder are wrong. Perhaps that is being mistaken for a feeling of being deceived. Deceived that when they got on the job 10 years ago they had a chance for promotion WITHOUT a degree. Those officers should of been grandfathered in. The ones with the chip on their shoulder are the ones WITH the degree. I don't need to go on though-just look at the cold hard facts:

After they started requiring degrees, is when this dept started changing for the worst. You have women and men coming out of the academy who claim they know more about the streets they hae never worked in than a 20 year officer. All of the BS that is going on now is being implemented with people with degrees. Before it may have been bad with the old ways that people are trying to get rid of, however it was a decent POLICE job. Now you guys have turned into unlicensed lawyers with guns. All of that because of people who want to put their degree to good use with silly ideas. Sure, officers should always try to go forward in their career so where are all of the training classes for patrol? In the suburbs there are ALWAYS training classes for patrol . Here in SHITCAGO only the special people get to go to training or people in specialized units. When push comes to shove on the street though I guarantee it is usually a no degree officer handling things. Why is it that people with degrees always have to make sure people know it? Is that the best trait they have? I am sick of hearing "I have a masters." Well I have 4 masters: 3 kids and a husband giving me orders all day. By the way , is that really your picture or something else you hide behind?

Jeannie
