We Told You So

And so did every responsible economist. If you tax it, people are bound to shop around for the better bargain:
  • Revenues from Chicago's new bottled water tax are continuing to trickle in -- at less than half of city projections -- despite claims that consumption would rise during warm-weather months.

City Hall predicted a summer surge after the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the first month of collections from the nickel-a-container tax had fallen far short of the city's projections.

Instead, the problem has gotten worse, exacerbating a budget crunch that has already prompted Mayor Daley to order $20 million in mid-year spending cuts and warn of a second round of cuts.

At the current rate of collection, the bottled water tax will garner less than 46% of the projected total in Daley's fantasy budget numbers. That means more service cuts and more raised taxes. And not only does the City lose out on the bottled water tax, they lose out on any other revenue that might have been generated on that shopping trip. We're thinking that the revenue shortfall is going to be quite a bit broader than just the bottled water portion.

Reminds me of the nickle and dime tax per gallon of gas in the city that sent every bordering gas station out of business in the 80's. Instead of getting some tax revenue from all of the vendors, you wont be getting any revenue from all of the vendors you stupid fucks...

Piss off the people with bullshit taxes and they won't give you their business. Piss of the cops with the contract and they won't give you ticket revenue. Hmm.

Do what I do. Buy as much as you possibly can outside the City of Shitcago. Better yet, buy as much as you can outside Crook County. DuPage and Lake counties really aren't that far away to make the trip worth the effort. Believe me, you will get a warm fuzzy feeling all over when you spend your money outside Shitcago and Crook Conties thereby denieing the corrupt politicians here your tax dollars.

This tax is so unfair....5 cents a bottle? They should have just added a 1-3% sales tax and I think people would have ignored it. Some retailers show you the extra tax on the receipt (costco) so you look at a the extra 1.75 per case and just get angry. Most people are not aware that you pay an extra 3% for: "soda water, carbonated water, colas, drinks containing less than 50 percent natural fruit or vegetable juice, and nonalcoholic beer" So that is 12.25% sales tax to buy a coke or gatorade. After July 1st its going to be 13.25%. Some retailers don't show that extra 3%, walgreens does.
BE GREEN AND VOTE FOR THE MACHINE.....you will have less money which is good for the environment.

Dear SCC, you know most of us live as close to the border of the city as possible. It's easy enough to stop at your suburban grocery store to get your bottled water stockpile. Then you just happen to do the rest of your shopping there as well, cutting down on the Mayor's take of sales tax revenue.

What I need to know (and soon) is what decent grocery stores are there just over the county line, so I can start shopping there before Toddler's sales tax goes up?

Does anyone here know any decent grocery stores on the other side of the Tristate Tollway off the Stevenson? I'm a southwestsider and don't want to have to go to Indiana or the northside.

Maybe you could start a new post where people could post the best suburban supermarkets not too far from the county line?

Thanks

I always shop in the suburbs and I'm a city employee!

Everything is so dam expensive in Chicago, I have to do what is best for me and my family and not the City or Crook county!

Luckily, I live close to an expressway for a quick getaway!

Hell, I don't even go downtown to do anything anymore! You get charged for everything now! I remember back in the day when parking at the boat harbors and parks were free, Museums were free now you get dinged for anything!

Why bother going downtown!

The end result of Daley having the urgent need to rape the taxpayers for pork contracts with his buddies while using the excuse "it's all for the good of the city" and it's Olympic bid, of which no one except hotel owners, resaurant owners and other downtown store owners even give a shit about since a vast MINORITY of the city's population will not benefit one iota from the presence of more walking RD numbers for a few weeks

How about increasing revenue by writing the idiots with shaking, rattling, booming, hood' cars that can be heard a mile away?

These assholes should be ticketed repeatedly and have their cars impounded, especially at night.

By the way, I think that the CPD is getting a bad rap because of a small minority of rogue officers.

If the city is looking for revenue from vendors, how about the unlicensed push-cart honking food vendors??

License fee

Sanitation inspection fee

Merchant license

Business license

Sales tax

Must be 10,000 of those things out there and the city just looks the other way. And then they are taxing the legit people.

Approx 20 percent of the price of gas is taxes. Since gas prices are up the gas revenue is up. What is the State, County and City doing with these "Windfall" profits. When the gas companies make more money the DemoRATS are all over them. When the government makes more money for the same reason the DemoRATS have nothing to say.

Well dahhhhh.

Talk about voodoo economics...

I cross the border for almost everything I buy. I, at most, spend less then 1% of my income in stores in Chicago. From the N.W. side it takes me 20mins. to get to DuPage county. I also internet shop, which is 0% tax.

It's the principal of the thing.

This is just the beginning...the real estate boom that poured unprecedented amounts of cash into the city coffers is dead and shows no sign of resuscitating any time soon! The stock and bond markets are tanking, and the recession is just kicking off. The city will be taking in a lot less revenue in the near and into the unforeseeable future.

I really hate this city, they screw the working class everyday, just to support all the crap programs to the "underprivileged".

Cigarettes in Chicago $75.00 a carton Lake County $32.50

Gas is 30 cents a gallon cheaper. Sales tax is 6.5 on everything, even on a car. Imagine the savings if you could find a relative that lives outside the county that will let you register the car at their house.

City stickers in chicago only an extra 72.50 each....

what a f***ing joke.
