A Real Apology?
Retired Sgt. John Northen told us to keep an eye out for this. He's been hammering the crap out of Channel 7 for broadcasting the following via letters, phone calls, etc. You know, the stuff FOP ought to be doing for us:
- "It's not really a good neighborhood anyway. People shoot. So after the [earlier] shooting , I was expecting something to happen," said Reginald Finley, who also lives in the area. "You got little kids out here packing for the police. The police, they kill you as fast as a little kid would. They abuse and do us wrong. So, people pack guns for the police."
Friday, this appeared as the last comment in the 17 June post titled "Another Shooting."

We have no way of verifying that this came from Channel 7 unless they authenticate it with Sgt. Northen. But if it's legit, it's a small victory for the men and women of the CPD during this period of beating on the police for doing their jobs in the face of increased violence.

arrests stats for the month of june and to the days date. were are down 2,509 for the month of june only. i got these stats from i-clear and by address of arrest and they are compared to last year's 2007 stats.

I'm travelling on vacation. While I check SCC and eMail, I happily have no use for a cell phone.
Ms. Hundley has my eMail address. I also sent an eMail to Channel 7 president and general manager Emily Barr, Ms. Hundley, Ms. Fisher and reporter Charles Thomas, I have yet to hear from anyone at WLS-TV.
Ergo, I can neither confirm nor deny the authenticity of the apology at this time. Without a direct eMail reply to me (or SCC), I remain skeptical.

Several CPD bosses called ABCnews also and voiced their opinions about airing that crap last weekend. Glad Northen did too, but it was probably the effect of numerous calls that did the trick.

He believes that the Republicans will attack him because he is black.

John was truely a "blue shirt" Sgt. who never forgot the little guy. As someone who worked across the hall from him in Area 6 (RIP) when John had a case he was like a dog with a bone. Yeah I know he has idiosyncrasies but name someone who has none. If we had a dozen Johns the politicians would literally shitting in their pants.

What if we elected a retiree like Sgt. John Northern as FOP President? What if we elected unjustly fired PO's? What if we elected a Gold Star Family member like the Gordon family?
I understand that the FOP bylaws forbid said but having someone in there with teeth would be more than worth it. We could change the bylaws.
It is time for officers to attend FOP meetings and begin organizing for change. It is your union and it will only change if you get off of your ass and take a stand,otherwise quit whining like lil bitches.

Comments like that should not be censored. His comments shed some light on the community's perception of the police and the respect for the rule of law. He expressed the typical view of a "Socially Disorganized" community that lacks any connections or links to the larger community and its instituions. It is the hallmark of a broken neighborhood. It has absolutley nothing to do with being a liberal or conservative. Those are just labels. Mainstream society (except when we get an occasional parker or speeder) look to the police for protection and support. Certain marginal communities look at the police as an oppressive force.
The other day, I was an in-court lawyer for the Chicago Bar Association and was court appointed to represent a 17 year old charged with PSMV. Ultimately, Grandmother and mother didn't want me to represent their angel because I refused to believe their story that the kid was kidnapped off the street and tossed into the stolen car by one of you guys. It was unbeliveable..."the policesses" they noted, "put the kid in the car and put it on him." I guess I couldn't hold a straight face.
