Mike Mette Update
From Mike's Dad:
- Last week Mike was cleared to work by the doctor but when he was working his incision started to blister so he went to the infirmary and they told him not to work. This week they put him back out to work and again the blistering started and he went to the infirmary. This time the same nurse who misdiagnosed his appendicitis refused to treat him and told he had to go back to work. When he complained to her about that and his appendix treatment she told him appendixes burst all the time. A guard intervened and took him off work but then they punished him with two days room confinement with no privileges.
The EXACT SAME nurse who almost killed Mike by not recognizing the signs of appendicitis and telling him he had a stomach ache is now sending Mike back to work with what could possibly be an infected surgical wound. We don't know what passes for medical knowledge in Iowa, but we'd bet that the hogs raised for slaughter on Iowa pig farms get better treatment than a copper railroaded by an ignorant judge and a malpracticing nurse. What the fuck?

I am sure that Iowa has some variant of the John Howard Society. It is hightime that they become involved in the prison abuse that Mike is receiving. This will cause the Iowa DOC some problems and could bring national media attention.

Apparently, some of those hogs come to be employed as 'nurses' in the Iowa prison system.
In the name of saving money and increasing efficiency, Iowa outsources medical care in it's prisons. These healthcare companies don't make money by listening to every little complaint. A lawsuit filed in the state of Iowa against the Iowa Department of Corrections would seem to be the obvious solution.
He ought to have at least one lawyer working for him in Iowa, what the fuck is that lawyer doing? Mike deserves decent medical care, if he isn't getting it the courts need to get involved through a lawsuit.

i'm a nurse. No surgical wound that is healed properly blisters. Those are pockets of infection opening up. The wound needs to be opened back up and cleaned out. prisons are known to have mrsa and other had to cure infections that can cause non-healing wounds on a healthy person let alone someone whose immune is under attack or recovering from surgery. his parents need to contact a lawyer who needs to start talking to these people in terms of money. His parents need to make complaints of malpractice in the regulation board of iowa. At least they will start to investigate her.

This is a scope of practice issue as well as abusive behavior. The issue will then be referred to one of five investigators who can then be personally contacted.
Someone (Mike or his family) needs to report her to the state licensing authority. Get her nursing license yanked TODAY.

He is just another convict, as far as the prison system, every prison system, is concerned.
Tried, convicted and sentenced.
Serving his sentence under the same conditions as every other person who's been tried, convicted and sentenced.
There is an attitude, embraced by some, that those who have been tried, convicted and sentenced to a term of imprisonment deserve to be punished by experiencing some things IN ADDITION TO the punishment to which they've been sentenced, that punishment being incarceration for the term of their imprisonment, and that the sentence to a term of imprisonment is not the TOTAL punishment that they deserve to experience.
This is the result of that attitude.
There are also some who place their faith, in justice being served, IN the justice system, apparently keeping that faith EXCEPT when it hits too close to home.
This is also the result of that attitude.

Someone tell Mike to file a grievance with the prison authorities, i.e., the Warden or other supervisor such as the Bureau of Prisons if he gets no satisfaction from the Warden. I expect that the nurse doesn't believe him because she's been lied to by so many for so long. OTOH, Mike's surgery was at least a couple of months ago, I have to wonder why he's still having trouble. Those things usually heal up a lot more quickly.

Just because we try to live our lives according to a moral compass, doesn't mean our neighboring states will embrace us anytime soon.
IMHO, there are two things that are at play in the case of Mike Mette:
a) Hatred for Chicago and anyone thought to be tainted by its proximity; and
b) A certain level of unwitting disbelief when we underestimate the ability for other locales to possess unlevel playing fields [read corrupt]that work to our detriment.
As Chicagoans, we are perceived by non-Chicagoans as having the ability to make ungodly sums of money, when in reality everything tends to cost more to support our politicians in the trappings they have become accustomed to.
We temporarily leave Chicago for places like Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan & Iowa because perhaps this economic engine lacks the beauty offered elsewhere and potentially offers a respite away from that which we abhor in our so-called 'City in a Garden' today.
Together, our money & desire to secure a "get-away place" free from all that we loathe in Chicago enables us to buy into desirable communities elsewhere. However, there is no way that the "townies" elsewhere will ever let us afford acceptance therein, for that is their domain and is simply not for sale.
Then, just like the decent, ethnic non-gangbanger who inadvertently slips up in some suburb, there will always be some local authorities that cannot subdue their hatred for "the outsider" long enough to ever be objective. In most cases they call us "FIBs." (F#ckin' Illinois Bastards)
"Do as we say, not as we do" becomes the law of THIS get-away land. (The truth is, they do wish we'd get away...to somewhere else.)

The family needs to get a lawyer (or another one, or more than two more) and ask for an injuction ordering that Mike receive medical treatment outside of the jail.
If they don't get an injunction in state court, they can go to federal court.
There are plenty of police here to contribute to the legal fight, so no legal action should be considered a waste of money.

First of all, has the petition been submitted, if not, someone please repost for more signatures.
#2 if there is a fund established that we can contribute to, again, please repost. Hopefully, it will garner enough to continue his legal battle and set aside enough so he get his bearings once he comes home.
#3 the suggestion for national exposure such as O'Reilly sounds really promising especially if a copy of the petition can be given to him.

She was allegedly breaking up a fight between he and his 15 year old brother when she "accidentally" stabbed him with an ice pick she happened to be holding at the time. BULLSHIT! She either stabbed him on purpose for beating on his brother or the 15 year old stabbed him. Second, you must be retarded to believe in the infallibility of any system of justice, even our jury system. Injustice, in this case, started with the county state's attorney not only approving the indictment, but vigorously prosecuting it, leading to the bullshit of a trial, unjust conviction and absurd sentence imposed.
And that was all before the shit that's happened to Mike after beginning his period of incarceration.

I worked in 018 when the son Patrick Daley was brought in there under arrest for theft. He was escorted out with no arrest. It was reported as "after investigation the business declined to press charges." My fucking ass. They wanted to keep their liquor license.

I continue to pray for Mike’s return to health and his release from jail.
That being said, what SCC wants to forget is this whole shit storm started with Mette thinking he was in Chicago, and could avoid punishment by flashing his badge.
When this failed to work, Mette gave the Iowa cops a series of improbable bullshit stories regarding the incident, again under the Chicago cop impression that the Iowa cops would believe anything he told them out of professional courtesy.
Had Mette's younger brother gone to UIC and this mess happened in Chicago, Mette would be out of jail by now.
The victim in question is a complete fuck-up and elicits little sympathy, but from court documents it sounds like the "one punch" theory is Mette's and not the court's - the decision speaks of the victim having numerous defensive wounds.
This case is disturbing not only because the outcome was unjust (it was, primarily due to the Iowa Legislature's decision to impose a disproportionate minimum sentence on batteries of this nature), but because Chicagoans and especially the Chicago police appear to be so shocked that there's a whole big country out there where cops don't have a free pass when it comes to getting drunk and beating the crap out of the citizenry, but instead have to take the consequences.
The one punch defense is a hell of a lot more than a theory.
Jacob Gothard, the real perp in this case, had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit, a whopping 0.28. He was so falling down drunk, my grandmother could have knocked him over with one punch.

Alcohol intoxication destroys the brains's ability to multi-task.
Jacob Gothard was completely focused on attacking Officer Mette. Gothard and his hulking friend pursued Officer Mette for several blocks, striking him THREE times.
Unfortunately for Gothard, alcohol intoxication also makes you an off- balance idiot.
Officer Mette threw one punch out of necessity to defend himself. Gothard then keeled over under the weight of his own drunken stupidity.
Don't forget that Gothard was more than ordinarily drunk. His blood alcohol level was 0.28. He was a raging psychotic drunk.

It would be interesting SCC to learn if some of these posts are coming from isp addresses located in Dubuque County.
Some of the anti-Mike Mette posts that I've seen here and elsewhere have been so vitriolic towards Mike, while at the same time so dismissive of Gothard's culpability, that I've got to think they're being put out there by Gothard family members.
I seem to remember one such poster in particular calling himself "john the goatherder", and it occurs to me that the "goatherder" part of that handle just might be a corruption of the family name Gothard.
Can't you bust these people by tracking their isp's?
