PO Francis Fund

We promised the people running the Richard Francis Memorial fund we'd put this address up again on a higher traffic day.
  • The Richard M. Francis Benefit Fund has been set up and anyone interested in donating can send their donations to
    The Chicago Patrolmen's Credit Union
    5310 N. Harlem Avenue
    Chicago Il, 60656
As we understand it, this money will go directly to the Francis family instead of intermediaries. Many would rather contribute that way for their own reasons. Make it happen ladies and gentlemen.

Donations are being taken at all our Credit Union locations. Not just Harlem FYI.
I just made a donation at the Washington St location this afternoon.

I don't get it SCC, are you saying skip the police (aka cline self employment service) and give the money directly thereby eliminating any "handling" fees?

Thankfully it is rare that a police officer is killed. Why wouldn't your union set up an automatic payroll deduction of ten dollars per officer killed in the line of duty? Ten thousand cops would equal $100,000 for the family.

Payday tomorrow, drop off some money, I will.

It could have been me or you and our families would be facing a hard time.

For those that don't know, here are the benefits for a widow from Illinois and the Federal Government, not including whatever life insurance an officer has. This does not replace the loved one killed in the line or performance of duty, but officers should know:

Illinois $263,000
Government: $303,000
Memorial: $10,000
100 Club of Cook Cty: $50,000
Whatever was donated at the wake and funeral and after $?
Free Medical Insurance from the City for the widow
Pension for the widow

Widow should seek a financial advisor and invest wisely

I'm glad someone pointed out how much our death is worth. It's like the card service commercial: going to your kids first baseball game, watching them graduate grammer school, high school, college. Giving away your daughter at her wedding: PRICELESS. Rick can't do the last one. Yet, as you point out the widow is going to make out like a bandit and should seek the advice of a financial planner. What kind of a insufferable prick are you? Is this the way you make yourself feel better at night? Well, Debbie and her two daughters will pocket a cool mill, why do I have to give? All this money will hopefully help them out finacially, but it doesn't bring a loved one back...

We give and don't give a shit if she blows it all in Vegas, you know why? Some will give just because he was the police. Some will do it, to ease the pain they feel, others because they couldn't get there in time to help Rick when he needed it. Why do I? A little bit of all the above, and more importantly, that could have been me....

Stay safe one and all, and watch out for one another.

If there are any Catholics left, join your local Knights of Columbus where you can get life insurance incredibly cheap. I believe if you are killed the Knight pay for your children's education including 8 semesters of any Catholic University

If we're keeping a tally here, let's remember what college will cost, what care for a special needs daughter will cost, what mortgage payoffs cost and what a giant, unfillable hole when your beloved dad and/or husband is murdered costs...

I hope we throw together enough money so his wife can quit work and be close to her kids. Life is too short. My check will be in the mail tonight.

I agree Mike, who cares what the family needs it for.
I gave because I worry about her, her girls and my own husband.

Emphasize: Killed in the line of duty or performance of duty!

Why was P.O. Francis still working with 27 years, waiting for his paltry pension of 75% only after 29+ years & keeping health benefits for his family. The monies listed above is only 'glitter' compared to the loss of this lovely man.

List the benefits for widows where the officer dies of cancer, stroke, heart attack (all job related, but not in the eyes of the city).

Why did Hilliard bend over backwards for 1st deputy sup Thomas (may he rest in peace)who died of a heart attack to receive benefits in the performance of his duty; BECAUSE the benefits suck for widow/dependents. Most of the money goes back to the pension fund when an officer dies.

Since 1st Deputy Sup Thomas has set a precedent, any officer who dies of heart attack, stroke, etc.; such families should sue the city to get benefits likewise.

Officer Francis' family should be supported because in the wake of such heartbreak, grief, etc.; the family should at least have the confidence & support from our police family that the spirit of their loved one is still looking out for them.
