Addressing an Asshole - Again

We ask the readers to bear with us but we have to point out a complete asshole and slap them around publicly. This is also one of the times we warned where we would be speaking of a comment that would never see the light of day, but still needed to be addressed. In this case, the commentator makes inappropriate references to a vice presidential candidate after making this statement in the "Outgunned Still" post:
  • SCC, Stop being so damned dramatic. I don't believe a CPD copper has ever been gunned down at long range by an assault rifle.
Well asshat, we don't know about killed outright, but...
  • this year we posted a picture of a CPD squad car that had been turned into Swiss cheese by a man with a rifle;
  • this summer alone, we can recall at least two murders with rifles and countless crime scenes with rifle brass;
  • two years ago, Gang Intel along with a SWAT element confronted three gunmen on the way to a hit who were armed with AK type weapons. A gun battle on Augusta left two of the offenders dead;
  • in the 1990's, two officers from the 010 District were wounded by rifle fire. One caught a rifle round through the hand - he was off for a while. The other was a sergeant ambushed at 21st & Rockwell and he lost most of the meat on his left arm and never worked another day on this job;
  • a rifle bullet shattered on the chain link fence in a Rockwell Garden breezeway one night - that's the only reason a PO kept his arm instead of losing it.
And that's just off the top of our head. You either aren't the police or are some two-year wonder with no police background.

You don't have to be killed by a rifle to have your life or your career irrevocably changed by it. And to have officers jump through hoops in order to carry the tools for the job at hand is just plain dumb. Adrenaline rushes and heavy breathing are going to be a part of any weapon discharge incident. The "barrel movement factor" spouted by Monique is going to be present whether you have a pistol, rifle or shotgun. At least a long gun can be steadied easier against a wall, car hood or prone shooting position.

To expect officers to confront a rifle-wielding-individual or protect citizens from someone armed with a rifle while only armed with pistols is ridiculous to the point of stupidity - which, come to think of it, seems to be a job requirement for the exempt staff.

Here's 2 Chicago police officers killed by rifle fire in 1 incident. This is from the officer down page.

"Incident Details
Cause of Death: Gunfire
Date of Incident: Friday, July 17, 1970
Weapon Used: Rifle
Suspect Info: 100-199 years in prison
Patrolman Anthony N. Rizzato and Sergeant James Severin and were shot and killed by gang members while patrolling community housing for an all-volunteer "Walk and Talk" project. As the officers proceeded across the Cabrini-Green baseball field, the assailants opened fire from an apartment window. The purpose of the shooting was to seal a pact between two rival gangs. Both officers were mortally wounded in the attack.
Three adults and one juvenile were later apprehended and charged with murder. The two shooters were sentenced to 100-199 years in prison for two counts of murder. These killers have parole review every three years."

Who doesn't think there are more rifles/guns on the street now then there was then?

Go ahead and try to say this was over 30 years ago. See if you can say that to their families.

SCC here are three killed by rifle/sniper fire.

Cause of Death: Gunfire
Date of Incident: Monday, May 19, 1975
Weapon Used: Rifle; .22 caliber rifle
Suspect Info: Paroled in 1986

Officer Joseph P. Cali was shot and killed by a sniper while writing a parking ticket.

At 9:30 p.m., Officer Cali, was in the process of writing a citation on a 1966 Chevrolet for being illegally parked at a bus stop when he was suddenly struck in the head by a bullet. Officer Cali was shot by a sniper from a window at the public housing project building located on West Lake Street.

Officer Cali was transported to Cook County Hospital. He never regained consciousness and passed away the following day.

The juvenile shooter had been in an argument with another neighborhood boy earlier in the evening and was waiting for the boy to make another pass on his bicycle. Before the boy made another pass the officers arrived and began to write the citation. The killer then told his cousins he was going to shoot an officer and fired the round which struck Officer Cali.

Officer Joseph Cali was a veteran of department for a little more than two years and had served the Army in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife and a 3 year-old and 1 year-old daughter. Officer Cali’s services were held at St. Juliana’s Church on Chicago’s Northwest side and interment was at St. Joseph's Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois.

Officer Cali's killer was sentenced to 20-25 years in prison. He was paroled in 1986 after serving less than half of his sentence.

Maybe somebody can help me out with another one I remember.

The officer was 3rd man on the car. Sniper's rifle round goes through trunk, through the back seat and strikes the officer. The officer was shot through the liver and although he was given 100's of pints of blood, he died. I think early 1980's? I remember the other police officers with him, drove full speed to the hospital and ended up kicking in the E.R. entrance doors in because they were locked.

Does anybody remember this shooting?

we have all heard, you don't bring a knife to a gun fight. Why bring a gun to a gun fight if a rifle is available? Use of Force Doct. never has a "toe to toe" scenario. You are expected to "one up" the offender.
A rifle has a longer barrel,obviously. Barrel length equates to accuracy. If I'm huffin' and puffin' I'd be better off with a long gun than a short one.

I remember working the Abla Homes on New Years Eve one year and we posted up in one of the high rises. We would conduct protective pat down searches on suspicious individuals attempting to go up into the building and recovered a coat pocket full of 7.62 AK rounds off a Mutt. We never did recover a weapon, but gee golly, I wonder what he had in mind with those rounds?

i don't know why everyone is getting upset by this. we all know by now that the majority of citizens can't stand us and don't give a shit whatsoever if/when we get killed. whether white, black, hispanic, asian, man, or woman most hate the police. obviously this guy is not a cop and if he is, he is a complete dumbshit. why get all worked up? we all know we are not getting rifles. chicago could have a shootout just like the L.A. bank robbery on live television where millions of people watch and we still will not get rifles. geez, we can't even carry shotguns! do you know why? because the life of a cop is expendable. the mayor and rev's would much rather us get killed than make sure we are properly equipped. we will NEVER carry rifles or shotguns so as to not intimidate the citizenry. we live in a liberal city with liberal citizens and liberal politicians who all hate guns and would much rather see us catch one in the grape than defend ourselves. it's cheaper to bury a cop than to pay out on a lawsuit. that's the way our politcians look at things. if one of us gets killed by a rifle do we get to sue the city? NO. if one of us is forced to kill one of these fine honor students and future investment bankers with a rifle no matter how justified it was can his family sue the city? YES, and they WILL sue the city. that's all that matters to daley. the best thing we can do for ourselves and eachother is to be as proficient with our pistols as humanly possible. go to the range on a regular basis and practice.

I was a teenager back in 1969 and grew up in the 4th District on Commercial Avenue, a few blocks away from where this went down. I remember hearing that this guy was firing a rifle at people who were passing by on 95th Street.

From Crimefile News...
At 9521 South Exchange Avenue on April 14, 1969, there was a horrific bloodbath that resulted in the deaths of Detective Jerome A. Stubig and Sergeant James R. Schaffer. Additionally six other officers and two civilians suffered serious hand grenade shrapnel and gunshot wounds.

It began when a 43 year-old, mentally disturbed former Marine, labeled as a “Mad Bomber”, Frank J. Kulak, barricaded himself in his home. Kulak began sniping at his neighbors who called police. The first two officers responding knocked on Kulak’s door and were met by fatal gunfire and tossed hand grenades.

The entire gun battle and siege lasted six hours. Jim Rochford responded, climbed over the bloody bodies of his comrades, Schaffer and Stubig, to make voice contact with Kulak. Using incredible calm, courage and negotiation skills, an unarmed Rochford took Kulak into custody ending the carnage.

Along with some deadly booby traps set at Kulak’s front door, police seized 52 unexploded manufactured bombs, hand grenades, and various paraphernalia for the manufacture of explosives including gunpowder, pipes, cylinders, tape, and military-type fuses. Also seized were two carbine rifles, two shotguns and two pistols.

Kulak never faced criminal charges for his crimes. He was declared incompetent by a court and sent off to the Chester Mental Hospital at Menard for treatment.

Sorry boys the majority of the shootings you guys are talking about happened a long time ago. Way before cellphones, hair gel, and elliptical machines. For those who don't quite understand, we are police officers not soldiers not mercenaries nor an occupying army. I live and work in the Sixth District.

In New Orleans the army general who took over during Katrina had to order feds, and state and locals to sling their weapons. I can remember being at a huge project operation getting started at the old 35th and Normal Narcotics/HBT barn when Commander Robert L. Guthrie told the FEDS to sling their rifles and make sure they stayed with a real police officer so they wouldn't get hurt while in the Robert Taylor homes. I didn't see any coppers carrying heavy weapons that day. Only FEDS cause they was too scared to enter the projects.

I have seen enough coppers try to shoot semi-autos and having a hard time. I don't need some guy who is fat and out of shape getting an M-4taken away from him by some Wilson brother wannabe during a traffic stop. Lets leave the rifles to HBT/SWAT. They have the training and skills to deploy heavy weapons. Half the time if you got some game and common sense you can defuse most situations the real police encounter every night. If you think citizens disrespect us now wait to some unarmed 14 year old kid is accidently shot by a untrained obese four eyed copper toting a Colt M-4 or an FN.

I have been the police since July 1986 (86-4A) and I have done fine with the same model 686 Smith and Wesson that I purchased after coming on the job. That with my snubbie has protected me as I protected citizens of our great city. If you want to make a difference and get some experience doing all kinds of case reports and diffusing dangerous situations come down to Gresham and we will show you how to be the real police. WE are not the M1 or M2 POLICE. IN Gresham we are the blue blooded real POLICE. If you want to make TACT somewhere come to six and get trained up real good and have a good time while doing it. But you have to leave your rifle and tree bark camo at home. If you need a bunch of toys to do your job join a suburban PD.

We've had 4 M4's recovered on the west side so far in the last two months that have the shortened 11 inch barrel. Very easy to conceal under a hoodie. Have to guess there's a lot more out there. We need the carbines out there now BEFORE one of us becomes a victim. But this department only reacts it is never proactive about officer safety. We need the shitheads to see a bunch of the regular street cops humping M4's around so they understand that we can and will match the firepower they have. Maybe make them think twice about opening up on us. Once again I'd like to give a hearty fuck you to Charlie Williams, the asshole who told me that we on the patrol level do not need rifles because we "have specialized units who have them." I hope you rot in hell for the damage you've done to working PO's. Yeah and they will get there in time to guard the crime scene after the bodies of PO's are removed. How can we afford to put GPS is every vehicle, but we can't put a $60 gun mount in a car? I'm afraid to say that we'll have to attend another police funeral before the department starts moving on this. No more affirmative action merit promotions! This department is leaderless enough.

We would also like for you to keep in mind about all the crime scenes that officers arrive on to find a person has been shot with a long rifle. Bullet casings are everywhere, bodies parts blown off and properties are shredded. This is one of the most violent scenes that is so often repeated somewhere in this SHITTY.
