Officer Succumbs to Wounds
- A Chicago police officer who was shot 11 times in what was called "an ambush" on a Saturday night almost exactly 14 years ago, died early Saturday.
Michael Robbins, then 43, was shot at least 11 times when he and his partner were hit with a volley of bullets in a South Side alley about 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 1994.
Robbins died early Saturday, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He had been on medical disability from the police department since the shooting.
Both Robbins and his partner, 35-year-old Talmitch Jackson, who was shot four times, were wearing bulletproof vests, which saved their lives. Robbins was originally taken to Cook County Hospital in critical condition.
The shooter is currently serving a 120-year sentence, so don't expect much of an effort to retry it as a death penalty case, which is too bad. Officer Robbins should receive consideration for a full Honors Funeral and a serious look at Line of Duty benefits following a full review by a qualified Coroner.

He was a good guy. He tried to help all disabled officers.
THIS IS A STRONG CASE FOR BEING BURIED WITH FULL HONORS.............ANYTHING ELSE WOULD BE AN INSULT TO US ALL
RIP Officer! He deserves a full honors funeral, if not it would be just another slap in the face to the working police!
God Bless you Officer and his family. PLEASE BACK EACH OTHER UP BECAUSE WE ARE ALL WE HAVE.
I agree with you 100% SCC, considering the cause of the death are from the injuries he sustained (even 14 yrs ago), I could not see how one could argue.... It is the same concept if he never woke from a coma.
The shooter caused permanent disfigurement that lead to his death... He should pay.
God Bless You my Brother Officer. May the Lord accept You into Heaven.

Such a shame. Knew Mike when he first came on the job. . . remember the shooting. No one expected either of them to live but they did and Mike contributed a lot to our understanding of the trauma of being shot and nearly killed on this job. He didn't just take his disability check and go away, he remained a policeman to the end through service to the department and to the community.

RIP Brother!
May God bless Mike Robbins. Condolences to his family.
If the Office of the Cook Co. Medical Examiner comes up with an ultimate cause of death other than HOMICIDE, the family should retain the services of forensics experts such as Henry Lee, Michael Baden and Cyril Wecht.
Fourteen minutes or fourteen years, put Mike's star up on the wall.
Yes he should. Mike was a real gentleman and was proud to be part of the CPD. He worked so hard to assure benefits to those injured in the line of duty. He will be missed.
Give it to him he deserves it ALL!! Every benefit thats there for our heros.
Don't forget that the exempts at taht time said the bullets did not penetrate the vests. They lied, the bullets DID penetrate the vests.
Also if the CCSO was ANY good, the shooters would be retried for murder, they do it for any other citizen.
Full honors, in the line of duty benefits, nothing less.
Full honors are due! Rest in peace, brother. God be with you and your family.
This is a must. Full Honors Funeral.Retire his star. Full family benefits. All earned in blood.
I agree completely with SCC.
If the death is directly or indirectly related to his injuries, I believe he is Fully entitled to a FULL HONORS FUNERAL. It is the right thing to do, regardless of the time frame.
I met Mike prior to getting on the job and he truly was a real gentleman.
Will he get his name on the wall? After all they will put a retired guys name on, a scuba drivers name on it, and a sgt. who had a brain anurizum.
This is a no-doubt-about-it line of duty death, deserving a full honors funeral.
Stars have been honored for officers that died in vehicle crashes and training accidents.
He suffered wounds in direct police action and he succumbed to those injuries. The time is irrelevant.
Deepest sympathies for his friends and family.
its seems only fair that if he indeed died from wounds suffered in the line of duty that he should get the requisite benefits.
but, i don't know how the system works. he may have gotten what he was entitled to financially.
a police funeral with all the accouterments does seem in order in any case.
RIP Brother
What a sad day. He was my vice president of the Disabled Chicago Police Officers Association for a time. I sure hope he is given full honors and considered in the line of duty benefits. Rest in Peace, Mike. I will miss you.
The wounds from sept 1994 killed the officer he was just strong enough to fight for 14 more years with his friends and family god bless him. This is line of duty with out a doubt.
RIP Mike
..."qualified Coroner"... No such a fucking thing in CROOK COUNTY.
Anybody every wonder why we have a Medical Examiner with ALL hack employees, where every other county in Illinois has a real Coroner?
Take your time, come up with a snappy answer, all you media polito-whores out there
A superb officer whom I learned a great deal from. This is horrible news. RIP.
Baden plays both sides of the street. He goes along with whoover pays him more. Lee is still messed up from Phil Specter case. He lied then also. Please find a more reputable coroner if that is necessart. Officer RIP.
I'm not a cop. CFD and I would like to send my condolences to all of his friends co-workers and most of all his family on your loss. ANd he does deserve a FULL HONORS service and his star to be retired to the wall.
God Bless him. He definitely deserves a full honors burial and appropriate benefits for his family.
rip my brother. I remember that terrible nite, when tom mc sharry found you both struggling to live. i remember your Commitment Mike when years later on disability you came to court on one of your cases, because you wanted old boy in the joint. You were the real deal what the CPD was once and never will be again as long as we are led by an outsider.
RIP
God bless the family of Officer Robbins. He was a good man and an excellent police officer.
Hopefully he is at peace with the Lord.
Mike was good people!
RIP, it was good to know you.

I worked with Mike back at Gang Crimes South. Later I ran into him at a number of anti-gun conferences. Mike you made coming to work fun.... we will all miss you. God Bless...
May God greet him on the stairs...
God Bless Michael Robbins, his family, and his friends.
He was one of the "street cops" that some posters on this blog demean on a daily basis and from what I've read more man than any of them.
ECS
I recall hearing about this shooting when it occurred. God bless him and his family. Rest in peace.
Rest in Peace Mike. You are a textbook example of the Bravest and the Best! We [your CPD Family] are ALL extremely proud of you, and Always will be.
Old CPD, ex-Tact-revolver cop.
May every day that "Madball" stays alive be more miserable than the last.RIP brother.
I was in the Academny only 1 month 94-5 when this happened. I thought yeah all these stories were being told to scare us. I figured oh well that's the 3rd Dist. so what. About 5 months later I was sent to 3 as a PPO. Great officers and had a lot of fun. I remembered P.O. Robbins coming around years later and how he was treated, admired and respected. Those feelings have long gone away. But today I pray for his family and I am glad they had him around for all these years. MADBALL, I hope you rot in the IDOC and do all those 120 yrs.
This absolutely be a line of duty death....14 seconds, minutes, hours or years....who cares, do the right thing.Had this officer not been shot 11 times he would not have had the volume of medical problems, RIP Brother although delayed you made the ultimate sacrafice.... Remember we still have others that this can apply to, Mullen and Airhart to name two...
You are darned right its a line of duty death! God bless Mike. Full honors Weiss & Daley. Anything less is an absolute disgrace and affront to every citizen and policeman everywhere. Do not expect them to do the right thing however. I will bet ODMP will consider it LOD as will most normal people. I don't want to sound macabre but everytime I read about something like this delayed death from duty related injuries I always wonder about a certain nothside cop who is now in a wheel chair and ventilator for life for the city. God bless Jim and his family. We think of him often and his sacrifice for all of us to keep us safe for assholes who think it ok to fire guns randomly at passing L trains. All the people at risk with that lunatic and thanks to the CPD, no citizens injured. This citizen holds him in our prayers often and hope he and family are doing as best as they can. Is he?
When it was time to step to the plate Jackson sat on the bench - and I mean during the investigation. You all forget - ask the Area two guys - unfortunately George Karl is no longer with us - he knows!
Mike was a good friend and a great guy....big loss
Dave Snethen
God Bless This Officer...
If he does not get a full honors funeral it would be just another reflection on how bad the mayor and j-fed are! Man up boss full honors nothing less!!
I know this
1st Deputy John Thomas who died at home got an honors funeral.
And Mrs Thomas got the duty death pension
There should be no question that Mike is entitled to the honors funeral and if he was married, his wife to the full line of duty death pension
Rest easy brother.

Mike was responsible for me getting on the job and for me working in the 003rd District. He took me under his wing and taught me alot. I've always looked up to him. He always had a kind word, and he was simply hillarious. Well Mike, I'm still locking these fools up just like you told me to do. I will always try my best to make you proud. I am very proud to have known you. We'll meet each other again one day, and harass each other as always. You will always be a hero to me. Please rest in peace Mike. God bless you.

But you forget Thomas was the boss! RIP John! But with that said Mike should definitely get the full honors funeral anything less would be unacceptable!

would there be any point? the shooter is in jail and is probably never getting out. this screwed up state won't off him, so adding another prison sentence doesn't change anything.
just keep an eye out and if the guy ever comes up for parole, make sure you voice your opinions.
RIP

Because they never know when they'll need the coroner's office to lie for them.
Fourteen minutes or fourteen years, put Mike's star up on the wall.

Agreed
You have to be kidding me on this one, this officer deserves nothing less than a full honors funeral for his service and his sacrifice to the city.
He paid more than his dues now the city can pay theirs.
This officer could be anyone of us at anytime.
The least that we can do is insure that he is properly sent off.
I was a PPO fresh out of the academy and doing my field training in the 003dist on beat 314with my FTO Ed Braxton. We were among the first cars on scene.Needless to say it was the first "officer down" call I had ever been on.It's something I'll never forget. The concern and prayers for those officers that later turned into outrage as we turned 003 upside down looking for the shooter. I remember coppers from as far away as 011 coming to help with the search.I finally got to truly meet and talk with him over a year afterward. He was truly THE REAL POLICE.If he was angry or bitter about what happened he didn't let it show. The word of advice he gave me was "vigilance." officer saftey first and foremost. My prayers and condolences to his family.
Rest In Peace office... His tour is over and our Heavenly Father called him home to embrace him and tell him in that still, quiet voice... well done my good and faithful servant, well done.

You obviously were not around when Cook County had a Coroner system.
Full honors are due! Rest in peace, brother. God be with you and your family.
We all agree. If the city can give full honors to John Thomas who died at home from a heart attack. Then this Real policeman had better receive honors.
This was sent to me via email from a friend of Mike's and past secretary of DCPOA. "I received a phone call the night they found him and was told at that time it appeared he had died in his sleep. I found out the next day that he had been dead for almost a week before he was found. I am still waiting for further information. I hope the relatives they located give him a proper funeral and burial."
FOP has published info on funeral arrangements for Mike Robbins. Doesn't sound like an honors funeral to me. . . Perhaps officers should show up in dress uniform for an impromto honors funeral.
