Guardian Angels doing their part to earn Chicago Police pensions:

Oh wait, they're volunteers. It's not like they're connected and clouted, pretending to have earned a police pension by jumping five promotional ranks overnight, moving to OEMC, becoming the mayor's chief-of-staff and then pushing buses and pulling trains, then claiming it all falls under the "security" heading so they ought to get more of our dwindling pension money.

Underwood had it right - the Guardian Angels have done more security on the CTA than Huberman has done his entire career.

Curtis Sliwa is a great patriot and conservative.

Curtis Sliwa: The Accomplishments of a Guardian Angel

Native New Yorker Curtis Sliwa is probably best known for founding the Guardian Angels, a non-profit activist group dedicated to protecting citizens from violence and crime. But he is more than just the founder of the controversial organization. He is also a conservative radio talk show host. But at one time he was neither. He was the night manager of a local McDonalds. So, how did he get to hosting a radio show from managing a fast food joint?

Back in the 1970's, the city of New York was known as the crime capital of the United States. And it wasn't getting any better with the City's budgetary cutbacks on policing programs. Curtis Sliwa took his all-volunteer garbage pick-up crew of teenagers (most of who worked for him at McDonalds) and formed the "Magnificent 13," which would later become the Guardian Angels. Ed Koch, then mayor of New York City, originally opposed the group because of its seeming vigilante nature (the organization encouraged and trained their members to make citizen's arrests). But over the years, as controversy over their roles as citizen protectors has died down, the organization has grown to include chapters in 11 countries and over 100 cities.

Members of the Guardian Angels are all volunteers. A member cannot have a recent or a serious criminal record, nor can they be a member of a gang or hate group. They are trained in first aid, CPR, law, conflict resolution, and various forms of martial arts. When patrolling, Guardian Angels always do so in pairs.

SCC Please please read this article the Department of Defense wrote about Ron Huberman. His goal "was to cut the Chicago Police Departments bottom third". This just shows what a goof Huberman really is. You will be amazed!

WARNING! You will die on that 3rd rail or a train will run you over. CFD can and will drop chains on the track after CTA shuts it DOWM. CTA may think its shut off and the chains will kill the system temporarily if that 3rd rail is live. CTA may not shut off both lanes because they are fools. I have chased idiots on the tracks before, never again its not worth my life. If these protocalls are not met then let the tough white shirt go.

Also the Angles have BALLS but they are putting themselves in REAL harms way. Hand to Hand combat they are probably bad asses but that 15 year old 110 pound kid will shoot and kill these giant angles. "Sorry no disrespect, just the truth "

Don't worry they won't sue your cowardly ass.

Why do they have to be idiots?

Maybe they are just as sick of the criminal element in this city as you are!

I knew some of these guy's 20 years ago, they seemed like okay guys.

Listen to Curtis Sliwa (Guardian Angel founder) who is a New York talk show host. The guy is very principled & makes sense on just about every topic.

This guy would make a better Superintendent of Police or Mayor in this town then the current two clowns!

Now quit being a hater!

Here is the Huberman article on his goal of cutting a third of the Police Department.
Hi-Tech Cop Moves Up

I'm not expecting a box of candy or anything. Or even a thank you note. It's just coincidence, of course, that a month after I profiled Ron Huberman – the ex-cop behind many of Chicago's high-tech crime fighting efforts – he gets appointed as Mayor Richard Daley's new chief of staff.

Huberman was brought in last Wednesday, "the same day that a central figure in a City Hall contracting scam was sentenced in federal court," the Chicago Tribune reports. "Huberman said that 'first and foremost' among Daley's marching orders is to 'help restore taxpayers' confidence in the integrity of city government.'"

Later Wednesday, Daley introduced Huberman to more than three dozen city department heads at a meeting where, to "stunned silence," the mayor "read them the riot act," according to a city official who was present.

Daley told them that Huberman "is going to look at your department and your performance; if you have a problem with that, you are out,'" the official recounted.

In his previous jobs in the police and emergency management departments, Huberman also looked for ways to shove the least productive through the door. CLEAR, Chicago's massive police database project, started out as a tool for fighting crime. Huberman wanted to turn it into pink-slip machine, according to Northwestern University professor Susan Hartnett, a longtime CPD watcher. By tracking cops' arrests and their hours, Huberman hoped to "get rid" of the Chicago police's "bottom third" -- the officers for whom "there's nothing you can do," she observes.

Huberman put it to me more judiciously, saying, "We want to save officers -- ID them when they're falling off the right course early in their career."

CLEAR's personnel suite won't be done for months, maybe years. The system may not even get built at all, without Huberman actively promoting it.

If there's a knock on Huberman, it's that when he's pushing his projects, he gets too caught up in the hype. "He sometimes sort of believes the future is the present," one colleague says.

Anyway, here's a bit more about Huberman -- parts of last month's Wired story that didn't make it into the final draft:

Huberman doesn't want to be here, peering in on perps from 15,000 feet away, staring at the shimmering video wall and the PC monitor banks. "Too clinical," Huberman says. He'd rather be out in the streets, where he spent four years as a beat cop and a gang specialist in Rogers Park. Huberman fell in love with police work, "the pleasure of locking up the bad guy – the justice of it all," from "day one" at the academy. (The fact that his Israeli-immigrant parents were mugged when he was six years old wasn't that much of an inspiration, he insists.)

On the beat, he was known as an eager over-achiever. When he discovered a double homicide, he did more than the frontline cop's duty to fill out the initial paperwork, and make the customary rounds; Huberman found the lead suspect's mom, and persuaded her to convince her son to turn himself in.

Even now, working seven-day weeks as the head of the city's Office of Emergency Management, Huberman still likes to go out on patrol, just for fun, once a month, with his old partner, Sgt. Greg Hoffman – an 11-year veteran who keeps a revolver on his hip and a can of chili in his desk drawer...

Ron Huberman has long been a believer in the transformative power of security, in "using the police department not just for law enforcement, but to promote social change," as University of Chicago professor Pastora Cafferty puts it. Back when he was a beat cop, Huberman studied under her, getting dual masters degrees in social work and management, while riding a squad car at night.

During a stint with a Washington law enforcement think tank in the late 90's, Huberman went home to his native Israel, and helped train West Bank cops. "For there to be peace, Palestinians had to learn to police themselves," he says.

For peace to break out on Chicago's streets, law-abiding citizens had to be given a sense that the cops had their backs – even when there wasn't a Crown Vic on the corner. That meant developing a system, like CLEAR, that could help the police figure out who the real crooks were. That meant putting silent, bulletproof sentries with flashing cobalt lights up on telephone poles, to let the bad guys know they weren't welcome any more. "This is about restoring a sense of order, about taking streets from the gangbangers," Huberman says.

SCC - You aren't just whistling Dixie when you talk about our dwindling pension. $400M in mortgage backed securities right down the drain. Markets in a spasm. But don't worry. Daley friends and family will get paid as usual.

On the issue of pensions, you guys should have seen that bee-otch Crapparelli get punked out when he tried to do a roll call in 023. He doesn't like it when officers ask about that $2,000.00 extra a month he gets for nothing AFTER being kicked out of FLOP for not showing up to work for years. We didn't even get to the cell phone he still has for free on our dime. His friends over at FLOP are all concerned about poor lazy Crapparelli's income but can't bother to negotiate us a contract. We're fucked now. Book it.

If you're actually a police officer you're one g-d damn tool.

You give good cops a bad name.

I commend these civilians who are willing to put there life in harms way without the benefit of fire power. It takes some real balls to do that.

Any cop that's got an axe to grind over that has short dick syndrome.
