Evanston Cop Wounded

  • An Evanston police officer on the street three days was shot during a confrontation today with a convicted felon, who also was shot, sending both men to hospitals with injuries, authorities said.
  • Police were not saying who fired which shots during the morning domestic violence call on the city's west side. In a news release, police described the scene as "highly volatile" and said police took "appropriate measures of self defense."
  • The rookie officer, whom police would not name, was shot in the arm, Cmdr. Tom Guenther said. A training officer also was at the scene working with the new officer, Guenther said.
Baptism by fire. Hopefully, a full recovery and a nice quiet career after this.

Good guys, one, bad guy, no points. AND channel seven called him the 'offender', for a change. Double points for the good guys!

Get better soon, officer. You're not a rookie anymore.

Offhand, I'd say the rookie did good! Bad guy appears to have been
"lit up" pretty good! Take care, young officer, your days won't usually be that bad, especially in Evanston!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the officer involved. The majority of your days won't be like this one. Training, experience and common sense will get you through the rest.

I'm glad the new kid is going to be okay. Police shootings are very traumatic. My shooting occured when I was a PPO and I had a terrible "afterburn". Thank goodness the department provided counseling to help me deal with it.

Good luck to the young fella up in Evanston.

And of course the news had the poor lads family on saying it was the poleeces fault. "They din't needs to go there with theys guns." Unfucking believable!!! I suppose the officer shot himself in the arm with his dept. issued drop gun? Good job officer, enjoy a speedy recovery.

The rookie has already made the hardest decision any cop will have to make with only three days on the street. Looks like Evanston has a keeper.

I am very glad and relieved that the officer will be ok. See how channel 7 reports the next officer involved shooting with us when an officer is hit also, there will be no such reporting by the media. The same thing happened the day of the Bank Robbery related shooting in Licolnwood, media reported fairly. Later that day, 017th District sgt involved in shooting in 020 after a chase involving carjacking and you would swear "we" put the gun to the offenders's head when he did the carjacking earlier.... Sorry about the rant, but as stated earlier, VERY relieved that the Evanston officer is going to be OK, NICE JOB OFFICE.

Good job! Glad you're OK - things go bad in a split second. And I'm glad the J.O. got plugged, too bad he's still breathing, though... Yeah, far more of your days will be spent taking care of low-key easy jobs, this day was the exception. You did the right thing, you get to go home to your family - thank God!

All officers did a great job. This guy was a real piece of shit. The only thing I can't understand is why a deputy chief who came on scene ordered the handcuffs to be removed from the offender. Shot or not he was still a bad guy who just tried to kill the police. WTF, wake up.

SCC, I just got a wonderful reply from Christine Flowers who wrote regarding the murder of Philly PD Officer Patrick McDonald...

Thank you so much for writing. I apologize for the delay in responding, but I received over 400 emails to this piece, some from your wonderful colleagues in Chicago, and wanted to make sure that I wrote to each of you personally. It is with a very heavy heart that I learn of Officer Taylor's murder, (I received a link to the story from another Chicago officer) and I will add him to the prayers I am already praying for Patrick McDonald. You have such a difficult job, and so many of us who sit behind desks and go about our lives without a care for our own safety never take the time to express thanks. The least we can do is refuse to play the race or poverty card to excuse our own weaknesses. I was disgusted when I heard my fellow Philadelphians make excuses for the inexcusable, for a worthless man like Daniel Giddings whose final act extinguished a life of service and courage. Pat McDonald was, like your brother Nate, an exceptional human being, one we couldn't afford to lose. I hope that you know how much I, and so many other people, appreciate what police officers do for us.

God bless and keep you,

Christine

God bless this E-town copper!

Hey, anonymous at 6:44am, by saying "especially in Evanston" do you mean that the job's easy there? Evanston isn't Winnetka. There's significant shit going on there. Best wishes to the rookie EPD officer. Here's hoping that all your future days are better.

Good job to the 3 DAY veteran officer..now some advice..try like hell to get your 75% duty related disability. Take it and never look back. This job sucks, I think you just found that out the hard way!

It's not the great job it once was.

Signed:

A mid-career veteran officer.

Follow up:
The "rookie" is doing fine. The OFFENDER, looks like he will pull through. He will be back in business soon with his street pharmacy. He went for a gun on the floor and was shot when all three coppers and him struggled for it. Copper shot him before he was able to level it off. She did a great job and we are all very proud of her!

Evanston has a little to much "West Side" in it for a "north shore" suburb.

Just goes to show what a liberal housing policy gets ya!
