Lesson Not Learned

October is a funny month. You can go from warm days that rival the summer months to night time frost warnings. Tomorrow looks to be one of those days that might, again, throw a wrench in the Chicago Marathon:
  • The Bank of America Chicago Marathon plans to add five more aid stations and a lot more water and water-soaked sponges along the race route this year to avoid a repeat of the heat-induced debacle that shut down last year's marathon, organizers said today.

    With temperatures expected to approach or exceed 80 degrees, race organizers said they plan to add more supplies at more stations, bananas and power gels for quick energy boosts and additional misting locations.

We hope we're wrong. We hope every contingency has been addressed. But we still wonder why:
  • they don't move this thing to the last week of October when the chances for milder weather are better;
  • they don't start at 0600 hours to beat the heat;
  • they don't institute a qualifying time like Boston and New York do to keep the worst amateurs from coming here and killing themselves.
Any of those things could reduce the chances of a fatality or hospitalization by magnitudes.

SCC,

If we are concerned about heat, why don't we keep it scheduled for the same weekend, but let it happen after sundown?

Midnight Fun Run

The course:

It can begin at Humboldt Park (North & California)

South to Chicago Avenue, West to Central, South to Roosevelt, East to Douglas Blvd, South to Cermak, East to Ashland, South to Garfield Blvd, dogleg onto Bishop, South to 63rd, East to Halsted, South to 71st, East to South Chicago, South on South Chicago to 93rd, East on 93rd...We can let it finish up somewhere in Alphabet City. (Avenues L or M should suffice.)

Each runner must have a C-note openly displayed on a transparent pouch around their neck.

you can't institute qualifying times if you want to have one of the worlds largest starting fields. boston is prestigeous, but it doesn't come close to ranking in size to chicago. more runners = more $$$.

new york does not have qualifying times- that race is run by a lottery. anyone can get in.

i agree, move the race back to later in the month. i know they like to do it on columbus day weekend (easier for out of towners to come in over a 3 day weekend). or start that thing earlier in the day.

I just have to say, there was a clown going around in 003 around 73 or 74 and Langley. Tons of sightings of him but no one could find him. Quite a few cars looking for him... Is this the same clown that they were looking for in 007 and 011?

Why the fuck are clowns some freaky?!

What Chicago needs to do is lower the race cap from the current 45,000. The Milwaukee Marathon was run last year on the same day as Chicago but didn't have the melt down we had here because it's a much smaller marathon.

The NY Marathon (like Chicago) only has qualifying times for the seeded starts. NY entry is otherwise by lottery (except for some charity runners and members of the NY Road Runners Club).

Chicago could do the same to limit our field, but the race got too greedy (race fee was $110 last year). La Salle Bank (the previous sponsor) used to brag privately that they actually made a profit off the marathon.

I ran the Chicago marathon about 10 years ago when they used to have it at the end of the month. At Chinatown it started to blizzard. But I'd rather be cold than in the hospital with heat stroke.

Was out there today, a girl coming in at about 3 hours (fast!) took a header right in front of me. Was about to jump over the fence since there were NO MEDICAL personnel to be seen. She kept struggling to get up...3 strangers behind her picked her up and helped her the last 50 yards to the finish line---which means they lowered their own times.......BLESS THEM, WHOEVER THEY WERE!!!

Yes, as Skinny has said, this brings the city BIG money and we all know, Daley likes money. However, not having qualifing times is a good thing. Why would anyone want to professionalize this? If a runner doesn't think they can make it, they should stop. LOL. But yes, follow the money, as the Thin Man... I mean, give me the money.

Weather has been a fluke 2 years in a row, the date is fine.

Getting volunteers is tough enough without a 0400 start for them.

Guess what you have to run to qualify for Boston? That right, a marathon (3:10 for a 30 year old male). Everyone has to run a first one somewhere.

The roughly 4.5 million in race fees does not even pay for half of the event. B of A and Nike cover the rest. The City fills hotels and restaurants at an otherwise quiet weekend.

But most importantly, great OT working around nice people for a change. I'll take it every year.

This was open to everyone. I think it should only be open to P.O.'s that work the street. No inside people. If you don't want to/or can't work the streets regularly then you shouldn't be able to work it to make O.T. But that's my opinion and we all know opinions are like assholes......

Did you read the 139 page marathon order? It read like right out of TARA training. Now that all of the supervisors are NIMS trained and all that happy stuff, there will be no question as to which incident commander or director or officer, or whatever the $$*& they're called is in charge.
