Olympic Dream Isn't Touched

But everything else? Fair game evidently:
  • Mayor Richard Daley is considering increased taxes on downtown parking and tickets to ballgames and live shows and more red light cameras to catch traffic scofflaws as he tries to balance an out-of-whack city budget.
So what happens when people start taking public transit to games, taxis to downtown events and start obeying traffic laws? It's happening right now as we type - Chicagoans are altering their behavior to deny the City fees and fines.
  • Mayor Daley said Friday he will consolidate city departments that handle consumer issues, human services, economic development and business affairs to tighten the bureaucratic belt during Chicago’s worst budget crisis in a generation.

The consolidations will save $5 million. That’s barely a drop in the $420 million sea of red ink that’s forcing the mayor to lay off 1,080 city workers and eliminate thousands of vacancies.

Wow, 1% of the budget shortfall reduced by eliminating redundant bureaucracies! Daley has almost balanced the budget! Wait until the pink slips start hitting - we got a letter from someone who seems to know quite a bit of the inner workings of City government and they're talking about special security details being set up for the heads of Departments that are about to lay off a few hundred people.

We're sure Daley is looking at all the options for jettisoning dead weight, right?
  • The Chronicles of Pool Boy continue with news of a stupendous Chicago political miracle.

Commonwealth Edison said late Thursday that its investigation revealed that the matter of Dave "Pool Boy" Ochal and the Generator X fiasco has been resolved to its satisfaction. There was no clout involved. It was all a series of rather amazing coincidences.

    Things just happen sometimes.
Especially if you run a small cog attached to the Machine.

O.T. City is a joke so here is one.

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, 'What is Politics?'
Dad says, 'Well son, let me try to explain it this way:
I am the head of the family , so call me The President.
Your mother is the administrator of the money, so! we call her the Government.
We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you
the People.
The nanny, we will consider her the Working Class.
And your baby brother, we will call him the Future.
Now think about that and see if it makes sense.
S o the little boy! Goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So the little boy goes to his parents' room and finds his mother asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back t o bed.
The next morning, the little boy says to his father, 'Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now.' The father says, 'Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.
The little boy replies,
The President is screwing the Working Class while the Government is sound asleep.
The People are being ignored and the
Future is in deep shit.

Isn't it so sad the mayor destroyed Meigs Field just before he could have sold it for big corporate bucks, to plug the hole in the budget. I guess he knows what's best for the city, because he's always looking out for our best interests. I, for one, will continue to vote the party line. "All Hail Dick...All Hail Dick...."

All that the Lunatic Shortshanks does is set one trap after another to try to catch honest taxpayers, to squeeze every penny he can out of them while the usual Deadbeats pay little or nothing. We the Taxpayers, are technically HIS boss, not the other way around. This city is like a fishing pond, and the smelly little Catfish Shortshanks has the rod, reel, bait and net, and is actually catching the fishermen, instead of the other way around.

I'm looking at the FOP endorsements in the latest newsletter and I'm perplexed. Mike Madigan's childish bickering with the Governor caused none of our legislation to pass this year (that includes legislation for disabled POs but, the FOP never tries very hard there anyway) yet the FOP endorses him. Greg Bella writes a column about how the State's Attorney's office discriminates against the police yet the FOP endorses Anita Alvarez, a member of that office, for State's Attorney. Dick Durbin compares our troops to Nazis and the FOP endorses him. If any FOP member who served in uniform endorsed him they have now sold out all of their self respect. Is there even one testicle in that organization?

Stuttering prick could still do it but I think he makes more on the City's take of concerts and rentals to corporations for private events.

And the Lt. out there at the Park District would howl at the loss of OT if the events and concerts dried up.

He was slated for dumping immediately after the July 3/Taste of Chicago fiasco. His replacement was named and it was all set.

Then the bad tempered bow legged cockeyed little Lt. made his million dollar phone call and what do you know, he is still out there safeguarding and liaising with the Park District. And raking in the dough.

Seems like Daley has finally told J-Fed to be careful to what he says to the reporters.

Still, Weis downplayed recent reports that the department is short hundreds of officers due to city budget constraints, saying that there were still enough officers to patrol Chicago streets.

"Even with the vacancies we have right now, about 350, that is slightly under a 2.5 percent vacancy rate," Weis said. "For most organizations, if you're at 97 1/2 percent strength, you're in pretty good shape."

"We have more than enough officers to combat crime in the city," Weis said.

There's all this talk about the unexpected budget shortfall. It seems that whomever is the person in charge of the budget should be the one jettisoned. Why? Because year after year when our contract comes up for negotiation, the budget is declared bankrupt. Obviously the city needs another financial director. This is shoddy work.

Top cop: Officers can't stop all violence
October 10, 2008 at 10:30 PM | Comments (0)
Appearing tonight at a roll call for police officers across the street from where 17-year-old Kiyanna Salter was killed on a CTA bus Sunday night, Supt. Jody Weis said the incident would have been difficult to prevent.
Standing on the corner of 71st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue in the flickering spotlight of an overhead police helicopter, Weis thanked about 75 Grand Crossing District officers for their hard work patrolling the area where Salter was killed.

But in comments to reporters after the roll call, Weis said that the Police Department did not have enough officers to protect every CTA bus and train from violence.

"Those [crimes] are almost impossible to stop unless you have an officer or two on every bus," Weis said. "And we don't have the resources to do that."

Why don't cpd dump 1/2 of gold badges as they are not worth the big wasted salaries, how about the husband wife teams, amking 300K combined! why does j-fed has 50% less responsibility and still get the same salary? Why does the mayor have a fleet of new cars hidden in the garage on 37th and normal?

Why not combune the city clerks and revenue dept, they duplicate the same jobs, why does the city clerks office have an "investigative" unit that just writes tickets at big salaries? more bullshit!

Why not have 20 aldermen? I call 311 for service and it gets done why do we even need any? Why commanders another waste? why all the free take home cars in many units? come on mayor! What about fire dept., work what 80 days a year if that, but same pay another waste!

How can the mayor and his machine NOT be sent to be prison!

Lets talk fiscal responsibilty...leasing Midway International Airport for a sum of 2.5 billion dollars over 99 years!

I was curious as to what Midway brought the city yearly as far as revenue and found this....

"Midway Airport is important to the regional economy because it provides $2.8bn of annual personal income and nearly 50,000 jobs in the local area"

This was after "WE" sponsered:

"Order year 1997
Project Type Airport
expansion Location Chicago
Estimated Investment $722m
Completion 2004 Sponsor City of Chicago Aviation Department Financing J P Morgan"

Thats right $722 million dollars in city bonds.

So, let me get this straight....we as tax payers have recently put $722 million dollars into expanding and improving Miday airport. Midway brings in $2.8 billion dollars annually... which over 99 years would equal around $277 BILLION dollars.

Sooooooooooo....we are giving up $277 Billion plus the $770 million already invested for a puny $2.5 Billion dollars, which comes out to roughly $25 million dollars each year from the next 99 years.

You just have to love Daley and Chicago politics!

Not to mention I garauntee that not a penny of that money sees our pension funds...which was his entire premise for the lease in the first place!

Remember to VOTE NO for changing the IL constitution or we WONT have a pension!

It is impossible. The ONLY way you can get funds out of there, other than resigning, retiring or dying, is to suffer a sudden and unexpected financial catastrophe. Credit card bills or bills of any kind do not count, no matter how severe. they will tell you to see a bankruptcy attorney.

An example of a circumstance that might lead them to consider a request for funds: a catastrophic illness that exhausts all your health insurance, a catastrophe that leaves you disabled and unable to earn.

Credit card bills will not do it. Mortgage will not do it, foreclosure will not do it. Call them up and they will tell you. The criteria are "sudden, unforeseen and/or catastrophic."

From old retired guy

Google " orange county 457 plan"
From what I can gather from that news report, the county was using the money for investments instead of pouring it into the accounts. The investments went bad. Generally, the police , fire and municipal employees stand to lose 10 to 20 percent of their money.
How long does the city keep the money before turning it over to Pebsco ( nationwide). It is a good question to ask.
The money turns over to the participant when they retire ( like me);

old retired guy

You should be very concerned about the pension and deferred comp. The pension questions should be answered by the reps ( and they are not)

So the FOP is endorsing Dick Durbin? I might be wrong on this, but I thought I heard that he wouldn't write a letter on Mette's behalf when he was asked to. If that's true, then I've said enough. And as far as backing Danny Davis for alderman??? WTF? An FOP that backs ANY west side alderman is not an FOP that has our best interest in mind. All these west side glorified gang-bangers with a title do is bitch about the police and then demand security for their "family BBQ's" and "graduation parties". I know none of these revelations are startling, but I just had to vent.

10/11/2008 02:35:00 AM

That ain't the half of it. They only endorsed those three because they are going to win, not because they stand for anything we might like or agree with. Think that's a joke, how about the Pension Fund endorsement of Steve Robbins? He's a fool. Then you have the disgruntled former FOP upstairs guy Caparelli. He's still a board member, so why is Mr. Lazy running against FOP-backed Robbins? Screw the FOP. Vote Shields. I did. We need some new blood.

Here is the cheapest way to solve the shortage. Hire back the police to work their day off at time and a half, because it is cheaper to ay time and a half than it is to hire no employees. Why? Because we are already insured and have all our benefits so the City still saves, at time and a half 50 percent. It is very simple, the problem, manpower shortages, the solution read the above.

Olympics bring revenue?

Shift of wealth. They raise taxes from those that can ill afford it. Real estate for the middle class and sales tax for everyone. These taxes are used for the Olympics. The revenue from the Olympics are then shared by the city , businesses and financial institutions. What does that do for those that paid for them?

10/11/2008 07:14:00 PM

But it fits so well. And it is not 19th Century at all, not even close.

You need to brush up on your English history there young'un. It is an adaptation of the term Longshanks, aka King Edward I of England (1239 – 1307) who was 6 feet 2 inches, very tall for the time, hence Longshanks. The current Mayor of Chicago is rather diminutive of stature, hence the popular sobriquet Shortshanks.

That would make it so late 13th-early 14th century. Do your research.

What would you prefer? Stuttering prick? Mayor Mumbles?

I kind of like "Convicted felon and former Mayor Richard M Daley"

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^You mean discipline as in PHYSICAL DISCIPLINE because there is no other type of discipline there!
The ego's of some of the instructors during bridge week was beyond belief! Taking their frustrations out on recruits is uncalled for.
And if the administration thinks that the critiques tell that the recruits liked it = well your wrong!
The recruits/PPO's, 8-1 class, all got together and decided to write good things so that the recruits that haven't gone through it will SUFFER AS THEY DID.
FYI - Maybe when you implement a new program into the curriculum, the supervisors and instructors should go through it first to see if it will work and it is not going to be a death sentence for some recruit!
Who on this job works for four straight days 10 hour days with switching early and late start times? Who on this job does not speak? Who on this job works out and gets 5 minutes to shower? Some of this was so out of line, who on this jobs runs for an hour straight? Who on this job after clearing a room has the offenders go back in that room and hide again? Who on this job when they cannot complete the above or is the slowest one to complete the above gets diciplined by doing more PT?
The new standard at the Academy is:
PUSH HARD AND WATCH THEM BREAK! Show no weakness, only the best survive.
If injured, tough love.

The Olympics have never been in Madrid. That city is on the short list for the 2016 Games.

Last (and only time) time they were in Spain was Barcelona in '92.

2016 will mark 20 years since the last Summer games were in the US (Atlanta)

The US games have the largest TV ratings, therefore the biggest money to be paid to the IOC.

The Games are coming here, get used to that fact.

They won't go to Madrid as London has the games in 2012 and the IOC won't put them on the same continent twice in 4 years.

They won't go to Tokyo for pretty much the same reason with the Games just ending in China.

Rio is a shithole outside of the tourist areas and doesn't have the infrastructure either now or in the future to handle something of Olympic magnatude.

We are going to get them, McDonald's is threatening the IOC with a sponsorship pullout if Chicago doesn't get the games.

Money Talks.
